My Son's Story (pt. 1)
DISCLAIMER: I Know it's a bit of a long read, but it's important. Please read. I promise it isn't boring. Thank you!
Hi Everyone,
Intro
This is my first real attempt at Tumblr. Please contact me if anything I post violates a rule or is not considered appropriate. Anything I post, I truly mean no harm nor offense to anyone. But I need to write daily again to regain my gift and share it with the world. I have been working on my version of the "great American novel" for years. As a child, I was well on my way to becoming a successful author, but people had other ideas for my career path - and to put it bluntly - my contribution to society. Writer's block set in and then what was second nature to me - creative writing, became a lost skill. Or maybe a distant memory. Writers know that half the struggle as an artist is the dilemma of our own aspiration towards perfection. But nothing is perfect. It is a social construct and the antithesis of true beauty.
The Ultimate Birthday Gift
So, that said, let's talk about my son. He's three - he's actually turning four in December. He was born on my birthday and has been the greatest gift that I have ever received. I won't pretend that he is perfect or even generally compliant with my directions. But he's loving. He's empathetic. He's brilliant. He's beautiful. And most of all, he is the sweetest person I have ever met.
I am going to go slightly off-topic for a bit; just to paint the full picture. I don't want to ramble and I am definitely a believer that a short and to the point message is almost always far superior to a long and complicated message. But bear with me because this snippet of the backstory is essential. And my son's story is important.
Appalachia
We live in Pittsburgh, part of the Appalachian Mountain Range. There is no other way to say it than the unadulterated, ugly truth of it - Pittsburgh is racist. Very racist. Beyond that, there is a general lack of common courtesy to outsiders, customers of businesses, other patrons in stores, etc. And the rudeness, is actually pretty much unrelated to the racism. It sounds strange and surely, minorities who are on the receiving end of it would certainly assume that racism was the reason why they said "excuse me," "thank you," etc. and about half the time are ignored like they're a ghost. But don't get it twisted - there are many times the aforementioned behaviors by many Pittsburghers IS induced by racism AND a lack of common courtesy and manners. You see, their deep-seated tribalism is indoctrinated into many Pittsburghers so completely from a young age that they know no different. It would be difficult for them to understand this article and I'd bet anyone ten bucks that if enough PIttsburghers read this post - they will attack my analysis of Pittsburghese culture as though the post itself is a blitz on the entire city.
Brown or White?
I am latin and there aren't many latins in Pittsburgh. But when we moved to Pittsburgh when I was in seventh grade, people knew my last name. Summer had just passed and I do get brown. I can get brown very quickly in the right type of sun and I get brown eventually in the sun that exists in cloudy and northern Pittsburgh. In seventh grade, some boys decided it would be funny to call me "estupido," and up until two years ago, I avoided sun exposure that would reveal my "brownness" like the plague.
Subversive, Subconscious, and Secret Racism
So, not long after I started that strategy, I was treated as white. (Side note: latins can be any race; but it seems that societal constructs are seeking to change this long accepted designation and categorize latins as some in between, brown race and not an ethnicity. To be honest, I am ok with that and now proud to be latin.)
The reality of being treated white in Pittsburgh for many years was that I learned what white people actually said when they were only with other whites. The most common thing that was said was one white person mumbling to other white people that someone was a "dumb n******" or a "dumb monkey." I've heard white adults refer to children who were black as "n***lets." But it was always this crocodile smiling through their teeth behavior. They'd never dare say it to a black person. Instead, they'd just indirectly discriminate against them.
I do have to mention that by no means do all Pittsburghers behave this way. It's just too many of them. I don't know the percentage, but if I had to guess I'd say - 50% plus.
Yes, Racism Happens All The Time Even if You Don't See it Happen
Many white people will tell you that racism is gone because they don't ever observe it and Obama was president - a black president. Therefore, everything is now over. I can admit that I have experienced my share of discrimination when my skin darkens. But I had no clue how bad it was for black people out here until my son became the recipient of the ugliness of it all. To me, racists are by definition ignorant cowards; so it makes sense they'd pick on a small boy whose only family is his mother.
Evil Always Starts Slowly
If one reviews history, every evil dictator or regime began slowly chipping away human rights. By the time the citizens realized the dire state of their country, it was too late. Their freedoms were already taken away and mechanisms to fight back had also been methodically erased.
When my son was born - a boy who is half African (his father (if you want to call him that since he is basically not involved) is from Ghana); no issues arose for the first two and a half years. But then the indirect discrimination started. The same rules that applied for white children didn't apply to him. I could give so many examples. But let's just say, as a rambunctious boy, if my son mimicked a white boy's same rambunctious behavior, we were confronted and the white family was not confronted.
One day I made an appointment for my son's hair to get cut at Philip Pelusi. They made the appointment knowing that he was only two and a half. The receptionist let me know that the stylist was a "Grade A Stylist," so I would have to pay more. I was fine with paying more; cool. After the appointment was made, I mentioned to the receptionist that my son was mixed race. We ended the call and I began to get my son ready to leave. Within ten minutes, the salon called back and informed me that they didn't/wouldn't cut my son's "type of hair." I promptly returned the call and explained his hair was curly, that's all. They blatantly lied and told me that the stylist doesn't cut ANY curly hair. Right. So, if a white lady came in with curly hair she would be turned away? I doubt it. Either way, the stylist is "Grade A." She is also licensed to cut hair by the state. Shouldn't a requirement for state licensing require one to know how to cut all "types of hair"?; I saved the recording, by the way, and still have it.
As months progressed, little by little wherever my son and I went in "white areas," we felt hostile vibes. Other incidents occurred that couldn't be proven as racial discrimination, but I knew. Whites behaved as though my son didn't deserve to be around them.
Southern Hospitality
We traveled down south a few times in the past year. Yes, some of the south is very racist still to this day. But not where we drove. Suddenly people responded when we said "excuse me," "thank you," etc. No white families prevented my son from playing with their children. No one told me my son was a nuisance or put out that vibe.
The Lesser of Two Evils?
But we had to come back each time because we live here and I've been working my way out of the projects that I have lived in for four years. Shootings. Open drug use and sales. The smell of crack in the hallways. Infestations in other apartments that come our way no matter what we try. People peeing on the hallway floors. Yes, seriously. Young children being encouraged to bully and beat up other kids. Children stealing or attempting to steal my son's toys because their mothers buy them none. Gamgmembers as young as twelve.
So, I concluded: "yes, we will move, but until then, we only sleep in our apartment and we do not play at the projects' playground." I figured IF I saved a certain number of money since I have a car that I saved for and bought last year, we would make it in our new, chosen city (Tampa or Jacksonville).
But then the racism against my son in the "white playgrounds" became worse. One day he was playing with a five year old boy at an indoor playground. The mother had no issue with it. The father of the boy arrived half an hour in, promptly scooped the boy away from my son, and told his son that he had told him he was not to "play with n*****s." My son couldn't understand why he could no longer play with his new friend and kept calling to him, "friends again!" while sobbing because he thought he had upset the boy. I had to leave with my son because of it.
Another time, a ten-year-old boy taunted my son on an outdoor playground and called him a "dumb monkey." My son first attempted to yell, "I NOT DUMB MONKEY," a few times; but the boy persisted and even smirked in my direction. My son ran to me and asked me to make the boy stop. No parent in sight and again, I just had to leave with my son.
Enough is Enough
Finally, last month or so, my son and I were at our usual laundromat doing laundry. We had finished. My son skipped a few steps in front of me and tried to open the glass door but couldn't push the bar to open it because of his height. He placed (yes, placed..lightly) his foot on the door to try to give it a bit more of a nudge. I was a few seconds behind him so just pushed the door open and we went to our car to load our clean laundry into it. In retrospect, I saw an older white male go next door to the beer store right after we walked out of the laundromar. The beer store employee approached us as I loaded my laundry into my car and then intended to leave.
The beer store employee told me he was getting "reports that kids were kicking glass." He said kids. Plural. And what he said made me envision a bunch of grade school kids kicking around broken glass on the sidewalk or parking lot. I responded calmly that "I have one kid and he's been with me the whole time. He wasn't involved." The beer store employee wanted drama to transpire. It was obvious. He said in a threatening manner: "Just so you know, I have cameras." My son and I exchanged glances because we were confused. What kids? Kids were kicking glass. Where? What glass?
Again though, I calmly responded that my son wasn't involved and he should check his cameras. He told me he was calling the cops. So I got my three-year-old son in his car seat and set a time limit of ten minutes to wait. We weren't running when he didn't do anything. The cops of course showed up about a minute later. It's ridiculous because in our projects (different police department than the laundromat police department), there have been shootings where children were outside playing when several clips were emptied into crowds and the police station is a block away. I know people called and it took an hour for them to arrive on scene.
Long story short, the laundromat cops knew it was a bullshit call. The supposed "kicking glass" was because my son placed his foot on the door to try to open it when we were LEAVING. The police eventually informed us that was the alleged "kicking of glass." There was no kicking that happened. The door wasn't even dirtier, let alone damaged because my son tried to use his foot to open the door. Lightly, by the way.
Even though the police were kind to my son, for the next week, my usual gregarious child was terrified to go anywhere. He eventually told me it was because "the cops will chase me and take me to jail because I bad guy now."
He's over it now. Mostly.
But we still have to pick between the craziness of playing at our aforementioned projects or going to a "white playground" and risking my son being rejected. It's usually a 50/50 shot that he will be rejected. If he gets rejected, he gets very upset.
Again, these are problems we never faced on our travels down the southern eastern seaboard. We didn't get treated like this at the destinations or on the journey by car to and from the destinations.
I knew we were living in an extremely racist and rude area, but one day I found this. It's a map delineating the results of a study conducted by Google and others regarding the level of racism in different parts of the country.
Tumblr media
I already knew this much. But it's good to know I'm right that we are in the worst part of the U.S. for racism and the kindness we received traveling to those certain southern states was no illusion. And I did ask locals before I found this map if I was right that people are kinder to all colors in whichever given area.
Not the Worst Thing That Happened But the Last Straw
People talk a lot about Karens these days. This lady looked like she jumped right out of a Karen meme. My son was two feet away from her while we waited in line and she said as obnoxiously as possible: "Can you handle this? Please get him out of MY space." Yeah, I didn't let it go. At all. Her argument was that she said "please" so it's OK to make my son feel like a "this" and not a little boy. I held him while he sobbed. Long story short, I decided right then anywhere has to be better than this.
It isn't me just knowing people are being nasty to my son and I'm upset. He understands. He had an evaluation for something and he tested very well. He cried about each of these incidents. He just wants to make people smile and make friends.
So, next month we are going for it. I'm no where close to the aforementioned goal. I have some savings. We may end up in shelters at first after savings dry up in a few weeks. But we cannot survive up here. Nor can we advance here.
Side Note
I wrote this mostly to inform others of the status quo and reality of racism and the real effects it has on one tiny boy. And I know it will just get worse if we stay since it's this bad already.
But if you anyone knows of any resources to help us get on our feet in a month in Tampa or Jacksonville (Tampa is my first choice, but either one.) I have applied for housing, even though I didn't and don't want to go back to projects; but I'd take one down there over watching my son endure so much pain any day of the week.
Ok, so final part: I'm going to say upfront I feel extremely awkward with this paragraph because this isn't my way (years before my son was born I was homeless for a stint and never sat with a sign or a cup. Just couldn't do it), but for my son, I'm going to drop my cashtag here. Everyone is struggling and I know there are people with much worse problems. I appreciate anyone who has read this far and can help spread the reality of what I wrote about. That's the reason for the article; but if help is received at all because of it, we would be grateful but it's definitely a far second most important reason for the post. Here it goes, for my baby, in case it'll change his life and give us that better foot up, here it is: $RobyndeHood

Calling all NASCAR fans
A good archivist knows when it’s time to call on experts for assistance in identifying footage. All you #NASCAR fans who read this blog (??) please chime in.
We have some Kodachrome home movies shot some time between 1951 and 1954 depicting either one or two stock car races in the South. I’ve looked at a variety of racing websites, trying to find photos of this track/these tracks but just can’t tell. The outstanding features are a tall water tower, a round building, and the stands. Surely someone can i.d. the track by photo #1.
The race(s) included Herb Thomas in #92 the Fabulous Hudson Hornet, and Speedy Morelock driving #59; an Aycock Motor Co. of Forsyth, GA, car, painted by King Neon Sign Co. Other numbered cars are: #3 (a Studebaker?), #72 (dark blue and light blue), #8, #93, #22 (another Hornet), and #23. In what appears to be a different race, we have #157 from Hudson of Jacksonville, #59 Speedy Morelock again, #74, #281, and #42, Lee Petty of Greensboro, NC (father of Richard Petty).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another clue is that it was a rainy day at the clay track and these guys were driving with muddy windshields, though I assume there were a lot of races like that.

NASCAR finally making things right for Wendell Scott
Wendell Scott was never awarded his trophy for his only NASCAR win. Now, NASCAR will finally change that through his family.
Wendell Scott made history more than 57 years ago in December 1963 by becoming the first African American driver to win what was then called a NASCAR Grand National Series race.
Scott won at Speedway Park in Jacksonville, Florida, beating out Buck Backer for the checkered flag. However, the trophy for the race was given to Baker instead of Scott.
Now NASCAR will look to finally correct that error by awarding Scott’s family his race-winning trophy on the weekend of Coca Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona International Speedway at the end of August.
The driver/team owner of Scott Racing passed away in 1990 due to spinal cancer, and he was posthumously inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2015. Often referred to as the Jackie Robinson of NASCAR, Scott not only broke a barrier in the sport, but most importantly, he belonged, just like anyone else.
Throughout his career, the Danville, Virginia native posted 147 top 10 finishes, including 20 top five finishes, as well as a pole position start in addition to his lone victory. His best finish in the championship standings was a sixth place effort in 1966.
Now Scott’s family gets to honor his legacy and formally accept his trophy on his behalf.
While this is a momentous occasions, Scott’s legacy has been subject to tribute within the sport before as well — even beyond his Hall of Fame induction.
In 2014, David Ragan drove a tribute car that matched the #34 car Scott drove throughout his career — and won in. Most recently, 23XI driver Bubba Wallace ran a throwback paint scheme to Scott during the throwback race at Darlington Raceway in May.
Referred to as a driver who “did more with less than any driver that I’ve ever seen in the sport” by fellow Hall of Famer Ned Jarrett, Scott’s legacy of a racing pioneer will live on once again during the last race weekend of the 2021 regular season at Daytona International Speedway.

Tabitha’s Story
Tumblr media
Lisey’s Story is decidedly King’s most intimate novel to date. Dedicated to Tabitha, it reads like an inside look at their courtship and marriage, with magic and parallel universes thrown in, because why not? It doesn’t take a mathematician to put two and two together on this book.
The basic facts are this: Lisey’s husband Scott is an author (obviously). They live in Maine (double doy). And Scott has died an untimely death. King’s obviously still playing the “what if I had died” game with himself following the car accident, and for better or worse, we get the frustrating and beautiful Lisey’s Story out of it.
I adored King’s painting of ficto-tabitha as a pretty tough gal who harbors some serious sentiment about her husband’s death, but can still clean a dead cat out of her mailbox without crying and calling a man for help. Seriously, could you clean a dead cat out of your mailbox? I sure couldn’t. I can’t even kill the spider that lives in my bedroom. I assume it will die one night when it crawls into my open mouth while I sleep. This is gross, but true.
The moral of the story is that Lisey really knows how to take care of business, and boy does she have some business to take care of. Like so many other King novels, Lisey’s set to take on some real world baddies (in the form of a thug trying to kill and/or rape her) as well as some other world baddies, in the form of a parallel universe her husband could travel to. We’re back and forth (literally and figuratively) over the course of the novel, revealing repressed memories and current events side by side in a way that narratively makes sense, sometimes?
The overall narrative was really my only gripe with this book. The first 250 pages or so read like an inside joke that you don’t get.
Tumblr media
Everything comes together eventually and becomes a captivating race against the clock to save Lisey, her sister Amanda and Scott’s legacy, but it takes a looooooooong time to get there. After 250ish pages I couldn’t put this guy down, but who wants to spend 250 pages saying “huh?” to themselves? I guess me because I put my head down and plowed through.
This book redeemed King’s stretch of “women treated badly years”, at least in my eyes. We get a cohesive, strong female lead (although one could argue it’s as much Scott’s story as Lisey’s, and they wouldn’t be wrong), but we also get a husband that loves, adores and respects his wife. After so many men that knocked their ladies around, it was refreshing to see a healthy-ish marriage, and even more refreshing to know that at least some part of Lisey and Scott’s story is based on King and Tabitha’s own lives. Tabitha King is a national fucking treasure, and we all must love and respect her.
Side note for a personal reflection - this book opens with lyrics from Ryan Adam’s When the Stars Go Blue. Ryan Adams burrowed his way into my heart 15 years ago, and was stuck there until last February when allegations unsurfaced that he was, indeed, a terrible human who belongs in a trash can. At the height of the #MeToo movement, feeling raw and vulnerable, processing my own past experiences, I threw my posters, albums and photos from his shows into the trash and was DONE. The day before I opened Lisey’s Story, almost a full year following the allegations, I was on my way home from a Target Run(tm), and just. started. sobbing. I couldn’t explain it. It came out of nowhere. So I pulled over, put on Jacksonville Skyline, and sat in my car and cried till I was done. It was cathartic and I felt better, but I really miss him. How can we ever come to terms with loving the art when the artist is a scumbag? I haven’t returned to him since that moment in the car, but seeing his name as I opened Lisey’s Story hit me like a bus. I have no conclusions, only more questions, but not even tangentially related to King so I’ll stop here).
A shorter than usual recap. Given the novel’s deeply personal nature, I feel yucky picking it apart any more than I have already. So ta ta.
7/10
First Line: To the public eye, the spouses of well-known writers are all but invisible, and no one knew it better than Lisey Landon.
Last Line: Then it was silent.
Adaptations:
Currently in development with Apple+ with Julianne Moore and Clive Owen in the titular roles. Baby Jesus, how many more streaming services am I going to have to pay for? I’my going to have to sign up for CBS All Access once The Stand hits.
Also currently bummed I can’t yet watch The Outsider on HBO. Too many books to read.

Rare Lightweight 1964 Plymouth Belvedere Still Hits the Track with Mucho Gusto
Like many of the local kids his age, George Edwards was a car crazy juvenile who was just itchin’ to get behind the wheel of his own potent ride. His dad was in the trucking business, and good ol’ pop saw fit to feed George’s passion for horsepower by buying the teenager his first ride at 14. Still too young to legally drive, George settled on turning wrenches on his “new” Model A, and waiting it out until the great state of Pennsylvania would finally let him get a driver’s license to call his own.
In the meantime, George obtained another ride, a ’48 Ford coupe, which he quickly turned into a stock car to race at the local circle track. Since he was still under age, he had to watch another guy drive his racer around the track while he manned the pits. But relief was just around the corner, as the young gun would soon turn 16, and with that celebrated day, his world would become a much happier place.
With license in hand, George hit the strip running. He realized that living life a quarter-mile at a time was what he wanted to do. So he built up a succession of hot rides, starting with a ’35 Ford sedan, which he raced C/Gas solely at his local track, the Pocono Drag Lodge, in nearby Bear Creek, Pennsylvania. Next in the garage was a stout ’33 Ford coupe, which he bought as an unfinished project. He turned it into a nasty C/A class car, which he raced till the fall of ’67.
A Yenko would soon follow, and became his weapon of choice out on the dragstrip. That car would see him through the next four years out on the quarter-mile, and it even accompanied himself and his new bride on their honeymoon, lighting up the rear tires at Cecil County Dragway along the way. Talk about a marriage made in hot rod heaven.
Light Reading George retired from racing in 1972 to keep on his family life and work. He tucked away his racers and held on to them over the years, to remind him of those great days that were now behind him. But something strange happened to him 30-odd years later. He started to get the itch to get back out on the quarter-mile again; and it was a persistent prickling that George knew that he just needed to scratch.
So in 2008, George decided it was time to go fast again. He had a few speed-demons in his collection, but he wanted something new, something different. He had always admired the super stock racers from the ’60s, and thought that might the direction to go in. “Every racer from the ’60s dreamt about owning or just racing one of those drag monsters, especially the factory lightweight ones,” says George.
It was a weekend at the Atlantic City Auto Auction that George’s life changed for the better, a case of “divine” driving intervention some would say. “I didn’t know this particular car would be there, but I guess it was just love at first site,” says George. The car that became the apple of his eye was certainly one of the finest, baddest, and most interesting of the drag wars of the mid ’60s, a ’64 426 Stage III Belvedere lightweight racer, proudly named The Reverend Mr. Black.
This particular Belvedere is certainly a rare ride, a factory race car specifically built by Chrysler to take on Ford and GM out on the country’s 1320s and do it in style. This was one of only 50 lightweight Belvederes built that year, and this one luckily survived the rigors of quarter-mile life, and did it with most of its original drivetrain intact. Only the original rear had been swapped out for an improved Dana 60, still stuffed with beefy 4.56 gears. The 12.5:1 compression, dual-carbureted Max Wedge was still there, and shifted by its original 727 transmission.
So, knowing this was the car he truly “needed” in his life, he sought out the owner and started the ball rolling. Turns out the title bearer wasn’t in the best of health, and really needed to see the car go to a new owner. So George hashed out a deal with him without the car crossing the block, and claimed her as his own. Before the first gavel fell, George already had the car packed away and ready to head to its new home. “Automobiles of this pedigree do not come around often, so I just had to buy it,” confesses George.
Mr Black’s Story The Ebony-skinned coupe had been raced since new, taking on the moniker “The Reverend Mr. Black” after the Kingston Trio song of the same name. Having other racer cars prior to this one, the original owner Howard Williamson dubbed it “III” as it succeeded two other Plymouths of the similar breed. It was purchased new at Powell Plymouth in Jacksonville, Florida. It was in the southeast where the car did most of its damage on the local dragstrips in its early years, preying on the meek Brand X rides that took him on. It won the SS/A class at the ’65 NASCAR Drag Racing Winternationals and even match raced against Richard Petty in Albany, Georgia, and beat “The King” to the finish line.
The car was decked out from the start the way any racer should. From birth, it possessed the 12.5:1 high-compression Super Stock 426-III powerplant, fed by a pair of Carter AFB carburetors on an aluminum cross-ram intake. A stout 727 TourqueFlite did the shifting via the Chrysler pushbutton system (the last year for those controls), and it fed a stout 8 ¾ rear out back stuffed with 4.56 gears. It was also decked out with other divine goodies from Mother Mopar, including a dual-breaker distributor, heavy-duty radiator, and rear located 90-amp battery.
With the purchase of the 12.5 compression engine, you also could order the Light Weight Package, which Mr. Williams did. That option consisted of an array of front-end panels built from aluminum. These included the hood with scoop, fenders, front bumper and supports, and radiator air shield, stone deflector, crossbar, and vertical support brace. Even the carpet was of a lightweight fabric to help shed a few more pounds.
These factory racers were just that, a complete package ready to hit the track with owner’s needing just to “tune and gas-up” to dominate the strip. But there were several modifications made to this lightweight from the start by Williamson. The 12-point rollcage was a must for safety precautions. Dodge van seats replaced the originals and continue with the lightweight racer theme. A set of headers was added to get rid of the spent gases.
All this godly-goodness led to some low e.t.’s and high trap speeds. Williamson held onto the car for a few years, and then passed it on to a small succession of owners, each of whom continued to bring Mr. Black to the track, and thrash any Brand X racer that dared line up against it. More mods were made to the car at this point, including the Dana 60 with Strangle axles out back, a floor shifter between the seats and mini-tubs out back. Skinny mags were added up front, and wide steelies were placed out back — shod in 32×14.5-15 slicks.
These Mopar lightweights continued their quarter-mile domination that its predecessor Plymouth and Dodge racers forged the years before it. The Reverend Mr. Black carried on over the years, taking on comers at tracks across the east. In the mid ’80s, the car was stripped down and the paint refreshed, with the painter recreating its complete graphics package. It then moved on to a small collection in New Jersey, where it sat for a few years, decommissioned from racing with less than 1,000 miles showing on the odometer. The last in line was the gentleman that George ended up purchasing the car from.
King George and the Reverend Once in Edward’s possession, the car got a few new add-ons to help out its time on the track. One key ingredient added by the new owner was a new powerplant. Worried that his thrashing might damage the Max Wedge, he built a new one up from period-correct parts. “I ran the car hard for two years and, as most drag racers, wanted to go faster and also I didn’t want to hurt the old bullet,” Edwards says.
The new powerplant is a stroker motor from Carolina Machine in Johnston, South Carolina.  It’s a 522ci beast based on a 440ci block that’s pushed the dyno to 640 hp at 5,500 and 690 lb-ft torque at 4,400 rpm. It uses a repop cross-ram intake (a Mopar Performance piece which differs slightly from the original) and OEM AFB carbs. It also has the original oil pan with the tie-rod cutout. “My goal was to have the car run a consistent mid 10s, and I’ve accomplished that. Anything more would be tough on the drum brakes,” Edwards admits. Other changes include a transbrake for take offs, a new torque converter to improve 60-foot times, and 4:10 gears to keep the rpm down through the traps.
Future Plans George is smitten with his Mopar ride, and it makes you wonder why he didn’t race more Pentastars back in the day. Having owned only Fords and Chevys over the years, he has now realized that he had missed something. “My one regret is that I only wish I could have owned the Reverend when it was new. It would have been very exciting driving it back then.”
Well, luckily George is making up for it now, hitting the local nostalgia drag races, and thrashing the competition whenever he gets the chance. The 50-plus-year-old ride shows no mercy to its rivals, and dishes out a fiery “sermon of speed” whenever it hits the 1320. Like the rear trunk panel says; “The Reverend Black is Back … and is he ever MAD.”

A Dozen Delightful Classics from the Concours d’Elegance of America
PLYMOUTH, Michigan – This year’s Concours d’Elegance of America held Sunday, July 29, like the 39 before it, was about style and design. Car owners don’t lift the hood for judges unless they so desire, which means that theoretically half the cars on the Inn at St. John’s lawn could have LS3s lurking under the hoods.
Fortunately, many of the owners do lift their cars’ hoods, and everything seems to be pretty original, from Brass Era four- and six-cylinder engines to a 1974 NSU Ro80’s Wankel rotary engine to the nine Nixon- and Ford-era funny cars to the General Motors Firebirds I, II, and III’s turbines.
Unfortunately, your humble reporter didn’t have the time or cloud capacity or even smartphone battery to cover all of these. In fact, the battery died before there was the chance to shoot even half the wonderfully over-chromed American cars from the Jet Age Fabulous ‘58s class.
But there was time and battery to shoot a dozen standouts, including selections from a special display of Porsche factory racecars celebrating the marque’s 70 years of building sports cars. These 11 Porsche Werkes Race Cars are said to be worth more than $60 million, total.
1. 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder by Reutter [Owner is the Brumos Collection, Jacksonville, Florida] “The beauty of the 550 is that it can be driven to the track, raced, and then driven home,” the notecard reads. Porsche hand-built three 550 Spyder prototypes in 1953, and updated the model in 1956 with a new space-frame chassis.
2. 1959 Porsche RSK 718 [Rick Grant, Moraine, Ohio] Like the modern Porsche 718 Cayman and Boxster, this short-wheelbase version of the 550A successor has a rear-midengine layout. Its 1.5-liter quad-cam engine makes 142 horsepower, a good number for the day especially when you consider the car weighs just 1,260 pounds. A fine example of pure sports car minimalism.
3. 1971 Porsche 917 KH Short Tail [Porsche Museum] Gijs van Lennep and Helmut Marko drove this car to victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, setting two track records that stood until 2010: Average speed of 222.3 kp/h (138 mph), and distance covered of 5,335.16 kilometers (3,315 miles).
4. 1959 Chevrolet CERV 1 Open Wheel Single Seat [Mark Reuss, Concours Enthusiast of the Year] Future chief engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov, with engineers Harold Krieger and Walt Zetye designed the first Chevrolet Experimental Racing Vehicle with a tube frame, independent rear suspension and rear engine configuration two years before Jack Brabham introduced his rear-engine Cooper Climax at the Indianapolis 500. CERV 1 was built to Indy car dimensions, but with an all-aluminum 353-hp 283 cubic-inch V-8, later replaced with a Hilborn fuel-injected 377 cubic-inch V-8, with which it set a 206.1 mph speed record at the Milford Proving Grounds’ five-mile oval in 1964.
5. 1959 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray Racer [GM] Designed by Peter Brock, Bill Mitchell and Larry Shinoda shortly after the Automobile Manufacturers Association banned manufacturer-sponsored racing, this car previewed the stunning C2 Corvette of 1963. It weighed about 2,200 pounds, nearly half a ton less than production Corvettes of the late ‘50s, and its 283 cubic-inch fuel-injected small block made 315 hp at 6,200 rpm.
6. 1929 Duesenberg J150 Roadster/Convertible by Derham [Veit Automotive Foundation, Monticello, Minnesota] This car, powered by a 265-hp 420 cubic-inch I-8, gives a rare view of a running chassis in the midst of restoration. The original Derham body was replaced in 1977 with a Derham body from a 1931 Lincoln, and the current owner is restoring it to original spec. The cost of this running chassis when it was built was $8,500.
7. 1939 Packard Super 8 Convertible Victoria by Darrin [Leon Flagg and Curtis Lamon, Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin] This is the second of six Super 8s with coachwork by Howard “Dutch” Darrin’s Sunset Boulevard studio. Most of these custom bodied cars rode on the less-expensive Packard 120 platform. Painted in Packard’s Havana beige paint color, this car has been restored with a Tenite “mica”-infused dash, faithfully recreating the original material, and with “genuine saddle-quality” leather.
  8. 1971 Plymouth Satellite Sebring Plus [David Huffman, Hadley, Pennsylvania] This was part of an “Alternative Muscle” display that included a factory supercharged 1964 Studebaker Lark Daytona hardtop, a 1964 Chevy Impala 409/four-speed station wagon, a low-spec Hemi-powered 1966 Dodge Coronet Sedan and a 1967 Buick Skylark GS 340 two-door hardtop. Though less popular, to these eyes the ’71 Satellite/Road Runner/GTX always looked better, more interesting with their voluptuous “fuselage” styling than their boxy predecessors. This one is powered by the big-block 383 cubic-inch V-8, with pistol-grip shifter four-speed manual, and painted In-Violet.
9. 1967 Gyro-X 2 Door by Troutman and Barnes [Lane Motor Museum, Nashville, Tennessee] A musical group named Barnes & Barnes once produced a pop single called “Fishheads.” This Gyro-X designed by Alex Tremulis of Tucker 48 fame, and gyroscope expert Thomas Summers is at least as wacky as that song. Tremulis and Summers felt this two-wheeler, using gyros for stability, would be more efficient than a traditional four-wheeled car. It is powered by an 80-hp Mini Cooper S four, and reportedly reached 125 mph in tests. The designers planned using stored kinetic energy to provide additional power for future models.
10. 1925 Bugatti Type 35A [David Duthu, Seabrook, Texas] A small, lightweight antidote to modern Bugattis, this T35 is an “A” denoting the detuned version of the Type 35’s 90-100 hp (at up to 6,000 rpm!) three-valve, 2.0-liter inline eight.
11. 1958 Rambler Ambassador 4 Door Hardtop Station Wagon [Peter H. Phillips, Leonard, Texas] Buick and Oldsmobile pioneered four-door hardtops in the 1955 model year, but Rambler was first with a four-door hardtop station wagon, beginning in 1956, long before rollover crush concerns. Engine is a 270-hp 327 cubic-inch OHV V-8. Just 294 of these were built for the ’58 model year, and Rambler’s four-door hardtop wagon was dropped after 1960.
12. 1963 Porsche 901 Prototype Coupe [Don and Diane Meluzio, York, Pennsylvania] We began with racing Porsches for the 70th anniversary, so why not finish with a production prototype? Said to be the only survivor among 13 Porsche 901 prototypes, this car has a number of features that were changed for production. The manual sunroof slides forward to open, while production models featured electrically operated, rearward sliding roof panels, and the instruments are in two dashboard pods, instead of the large central tachometer with four smaller pods flanking it. Counterbalance torsion springs hold up the front trunk lid and coil springs hold up the rear engine lid, instead of the production model’s gas struts, and the interior window sill moldings are made of balsa wood. This car was used to experiment with various heating/ventilating systems, which were sealed after testing with small aluminum plates.

What to Know Before Your Car is Painted?
You might think that your car doesn't need fresh paint if there are no obvious indications. In some cases, you might be correct, but your car needs new paint if you notice any symptoms of rusting, oxidation, or fading. Even though the rust is only a little spot and doesn't seem to matter, if it isn't managed properly and painted over, it can spread quickly. A paint job removes all corrosion, old paint, and oxidation before using new primer and paint. Born Again Painters LLC provides car painting services near Florida. Check if you need it. Call us today at 904-374-6939.
