Sadhvi Rithambara, a right-wing Hindu figure known for her hate speeches and genocidal slogans against Muslims, is among the winners of the Padma Awards, one of the highest civilian honors in the country.
Rithambara is the founder-chairperson of Durga Vahini, the women’s wing of the Hindu militant group Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP).
She is one of the 19 recipients of the Padma Bhushan this year.
Rithambara gained prominence among Hindu nationalists with the VHP in the late 1980s through the Jan Jagran Abhiyan and in the 1990s during the run-up to the Babri Masjid demolition. She was later named an accused in the Liberhan Commission report but was acquitted by a CBI court in 2020.
Between 1989 and 1992, Rithambara delivered multiple public speeches calling for war against Muslims. Cassettes of her genocidal rhetoric were widely circulated and played at temples and public gatherings across India.
In her speeches, she equated Muslims to lemon in milk and compared them to flies, alleging they were mass-breeding to outnumber Hindus.
She was also a star campaigner for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 1989 and 1991 Lok Sabha elections, as well as in several state legislative elections.
Rithambara was present during the Babri Masjid demolition, cheering the crowd while standing atop the mosque’s terrace. Three days later, she was arrested for inciting communal tensions.

Remembering #YashChopra, the legendary filmmaker, on his 12th death anniversary (21/10/12).
Yash Raj Chopra (27 September 1932 – 21 October 2012) was a distinguished Indian film director and producer in Hindi cinema. He was the visionary founder and chairman of the film production and distribution powerhouse Yash Raj Films. His illustrious career earned him numerous accolades, including 6 National Film Awards and 8 Filmfare Awards, marking him as one of the paramount filmmakers in Hindi cinema, especially revered for his romantic narratives with compelling female protagonists. His remarkable contributions to the film industry were recognized by the Government of India with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2001 and the Padma Bhushan in 2005. Further, in 2006, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts gave him a lifetime membership, a first for an Indian.
Chopra's cinematic journey commenced as an assistant director to I. S. Johar and his elder brother, B.R. Chopra. He debuted as a director with Dhool Ka Phool in 1959, a melodrama exploring illegitimacy, followed by the social drama Dharmputra (1961). His directorial finesse gained prominence with the critically and commercially acclaimed family drama Waqt (1965), which introduced the trend of ensemble casts in Bollywood. In 1970, he launched his own production entity, Yash Raj Films, with its maiden venture being Daag: A Poem of Love (1973), a melodrama delving into polygamy, which garnered success. His winning streak continued through the seventies with iconic films like the action-thriller Deewaar (1975), which catapulted Amitabh Bachchan to stardom; the musical romantic drama Kabhi Kabhie (1976), and the ensemble family drama Trishul (1978). Chopra crafted two of his magnum opuses with Sridevi: the romantic musical Chandni (1989), which played a pivotal role in veering Bollywood away from violent themes towards romantic musicals, and Lamhe (1991), an intergenerational romantic drama, which, despite underperforming domestically, enjoyed overseas success.
Following the critically lacking Parampara (1993), he helmed the musical psychological thriller Darr (1993), marking the onset of his collaborative journey with Shahrukh Khan. This partnership flourished with romantic hits like Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), Veer-Zaara (2004), and Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012). Although he announced his retirement in 2012, his dedication saw him working until his demise during the production of Jab Tak Hai Jaan due to dengue fever. Yash Raj Chopra's directorial legacy, embodied in his extensive work, cements his position as one of Bollywood's timeless directors.

Rukmini Devi Arundale
Rukmini Devi Arundale, born on February 29, 1904, in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, served as a catalyst in revitalising the traditional Indian dance form of Bharatanatyam and establishing its prominence. Born into a Brahmin family with deep connections to the Theosophical Society, Rukmini was exposed to humanist ideals from an early age. Her marriage to George Arundale, a theosophist and educator, further fuelled her interest in theosophy and dance. While travelling with her husband and Annie Besant, Rukmini learned of Western ballet and began studying ballet at the suggestion of the famous ballerina Anna Pavlova. Pavlova also encouraged her to explore classical Indian dance forms, which allowed Rukmini to pursue Bharatanatyam To challenge the norms and re-establish the artistic integrity of the dance, Rukmini undertook formal education at the Bharatnatyam master Pandanalur Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai. In 1935, at the age of 31, Rukmini made her debut in Bharatanatyam, defying societal expectations and setting a precedent for upper-class women to participate in the dance form. Witnessing the transformative power of Bharatanatyam, she established the International Academy of the Arts in Adyar in 1936, later renamed Kalakshetra. Through Kalakshetra, Rukmini aimed to teach and popularise Bharatanatyam through this institution, saying that she felt she had been "ushered into a new world of rhythmic beauty and meaning." Rukmini Devi Arundale's contributions extended beyond dance. In 1934, she founded educational institutions that blended theosophy and traditional Hindu values. Her vision for Kalakshetra went beyond preserving Bharatanatyam; it became a hub for various Indian traditions and the propagation of theosophical ideals. Her efforts earned her accolades, including the Padma Bhushan in 1956 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1967. As an animal lover, she chaired the Animal Welfare Board and played a key role in passing the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act in 1952. In the same year, she made history as the first ever woman in Indian history to be nominated as the Rajya Sabha member In 1977, she declined the offer to become the President of India from Prime Minister Morarji Desai post the death of President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed. In a 2013 speech at Kalakshetra, President Pranab Mukherjee delivered the first Rukmini Devi Memorial Lecture, emphasising on the significance she has had on the revival of classical dance and her commitment to the cultural renaissance of India.

Tribute to Versatile Actor Anant Nag 855.
Tribute to Versatile Actor AnantNag.855
Today, I remember another iconic personality from the South Indian Film Industry, the talented actor **Anant Nag**. He began his career as a theater artist and later transitioned into films. If I'm not mistaken, it was the stalwart director **Shyam Benegal** who introduced him to the film world through the Hindi film **Ankur** (1974), which gave him a solid start in his acting journey. Following this, Anant Nag found his footing in Kannada cinema and quickly became a major figure in the industry. Over his illustrious career spanning nearly five decades, he has acted in a wide range of films across Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, Hindi, and Marathi cinema. Anant Nag was not just a celebrated actor but also dabbled in politics during his younger days, making significant contributions in his own way. He has been honored with several awards, most notably as a Best Actor, a testament to his exceptional skill in bringing depth and nuance to his roles. I have had the pleasure of watching his films for more than three and a half decades, and I have always admired his performances. Whether portraying soft-spoken characters or playing more intense roles, Anant Nag’s versatility is evident in every role he undertakes. His humble and smiling persona has made him a beloved figure in the film industry, appreciated by fans and peers alike. Though he has an extensive body of work, I have personally watched several of his standout films, including *Nodi Swamy Navirodu Hige*, *Ramapurada Ravana*, *Olavebaduku*, *Accident*, *Hosa Neru*, *Kurukshetra*, *Rana Dheera*, *Shanthinivasa*, *Abhimanyu*, *Ganeshana Maduve*, *Gouri Ganesa*, *Rajakeya*, *Kathambari*, *India vs England*, and many others that I may not be able to recall at the moment. Anant Nag has worked with all the top actors, directors, cinematographers, and music directors, leaving a lasting mark in every collaboration. His contribution to both theater and cinema, especially in Kannada films, has been exceptional. He was honored with the **Lifetime Achievement Award**, and more recently, he was conferred with the prestigious **Padma Bhushan** for his outstanding contributions to the Sandalwood film industry. This tribute is just a small acknowledgment of Anant Nag's remarkable career. I hope I've done justice to his legacy, though if any error is found in my recollections, please feel free to overlook it. I am truly happy to celebrate and honor this legendary actor today.
