[ad_1] Satwik-Chirag at India Open 2025 (PC: Gargi Raut) After seven days of action at the India Open 2025 in New Delhi, the country’s shuttlers have travelled to Indonesia in order to partake in the Masters in Jakarta. The Indian contingent had somewhat of a disappointing tournament in Delhi as no Indian shuttler, except the pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, made it past the quarter-finals. The men’s doubles pair also eventually lost out to Malaysia’s Goh-Izzuddin in the semi-finals. Whereas PV Sindhu and Kiran George crashed out in the quarters. On a positive note, the Indian contingent has had a bright start to their tournament in Jakarta. On Day 1, the Sat-Chi duo was yet again the highlight of the day. Satwik-Chirag dominated the proceedings against the Chinese Taipei pair of Chen Z.R and Lin Y.C – 21-16, 21-15 – to go through to the round of 16. Women’s doubles pair of Ashwini Ponnappa-Tanisha Crasto, who faced a second round exit in the India Open, started things off on a strong note at the Indonesia Masters as they won against Thailand’s Ornich Jongsathapornparn and Sukitta Suwachai by a comprehensive 21-6, 21-14. In the Women’s singles category, Isharani Baruah faced a first-round exit as she lost in a hard-fought match against Indonesia’s Chiara Marvella Handoyo 21-18, 22-20. Meanwhile, Tanya Hemanth had a positive start to her campaign as she clinched a victory after losing the first game against Chinese Taipei’s Tung C T 16-21, 21-17, 21-15. Ayush Shetty, Indian men’s singles shuttler, advanced to the second round of the tournament after beating compatriot and Indian badminton veteran Shrikanth Kidambi in a dominating fashion, 21-7, 21-15. Day 2 of the Indonesia Masters promises more action-packed matches as PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen and Priyanshu Rajawat take the court for their round of 32 matches. PV Sindhu will look forward to solidifying her comeback after a long injury layoff and a positive show at the India Open. On the other hand, Lakshya will look to regain the form he had displayed at the Olympics and work on his consistency. New Delhi, Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu progressed to the quarterfinals, while Kiran George delivered a gritty performance under pressure to keep the home flag flying in men's singles at the India Open badminton tournament here on Thursday. HT Image Title contenders Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, who had won the 2022 edition, recovered from an opening game reversal to beat Japan's Kenya Mitsuhashi and Hiroki Okamura 20-22 21-14 21-16 to inch closer to the crown. "I think they were quite good in their flat exchanges. As I said, we can speed up controlling easy errors which we shouldn't have. I think we were cruising quite comfortably in the first game, but happy that we could. However tired the game was, we still managed to beat," Chirag said. Sindhu cruised past Japan's world No. 46 Manami Suizu with a 21-15 21-13 win, while Kiran pulled off a stunning recovery, saving six game points to outlast Alex Lanier 22-20 21-13 to enter his maiden quarterfinals of a super 750 event at the KD Jadhav Indoor Hall here. Sindhu, a former world champion, will now face Paris Olympics bronze medallist Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, while Kiran will take on left-handed Chinese shuttler Hong Yang Weng in the next round. In other results, mixed doubles pair of Tanisha Crasto and Dhruv Kapila went down to eighth seed Hiroki Midorikawa and Natsu Saito 18-21 17-21. Women's doubles combination of Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha, Rutuparna Panda and Swetaparna Panda and mixed doubles pair of Ashith Surya and Amrutha Pramuthesh also were knocked out in the second round. Cool Kiran shows grit ============= Kiran's match against Alex started with the Frenchman leading 6-1 before a series of unforced errors allowed the Indian to claw back. Despite Alex using his smashes effectively, Kiran hung in and managed to close the gap. Alex led by three points at the interval, but Kiran showed remarkable mental resilience. Down 14-20, Kiran saved six game points, launching an eight-point burst to seal the opening game as Alex repeatedly missed the lines. In the second game, Kiran led 14-11 after a fierce battle. Alex's smashes went wide and long, while Kiran capitalised on every opportunity. Alex lost both challenges as Kiran surged to a 19-13 lead, and a couple of net errors sealed the match for the Indian. "I was just taking it one point at a time, not thinking about the lead. I think that helped me secure the first set. I was just being patient," Kiran said after the match. "This win feels good, but I'm focused on my next match. It's a huge confidence booster. Going into tomorrow's match will help a lot. It's just hard work, I'm playing patiently. That's what I think changed my game. Today, I didn't have anything to lose, so I gave my all." Sindhu vs Suizu ========== Sindhu made a strong start, leading 11-6 at the break. Although Suizu briefly narrowed the gap to 11-13 and 13-14, Sindhu was always a step ahead, with the Japanese player unable to cope with the Indian's powerful smashes. Sindhu continued to hit deep returns and used precise drops to trouble Suizu. Soon, she was 20-14 up and sealed the game when the Japanese hit the net. After the change of sides, Sindhu raced to a 5-0 lead. The second game was all about the Indian as she found cross court winners at will, quickly establishing a dominant 11-2 lead at the interval, and it became clear that Suizu had no answers. "After a break, what I liked about my game today was my movement and my attacks were working well. Moving forward, I need to be ready for anything because matches will get harder," said Sindhu. Two-time Olympic medallist Viktor Axelsen beat Singapore's Jia Heng Jason 21-11 21- 14 to also reach the quarterfinal, while former world champion Loh Kean Yew outwitted sixth seeded Japanese Kodai Naraoka 21-12 24-22 in another match. Last edition's runners-up Lee Cheuk Yiu of Hong Kong had to save a match point in the decider against Toma Junior Popov before winning the one hour 16 minutes clash 14-21 21-18 22-20 to advance to the quarterfinals. In women's singles, top seed and Olympic champion An Se-young streamrolled Thailand's Ratchanok Intanon 21-15 21-8 to also progress to the last eight. Challenges by the gender stereotypes: Female perception in Indian culture
In the vast tapestry of Indian society, with its riches in traditions and cultural diversity, women always have had a central role. However, they were also enclosed in tough gender stereotypes that, for centuries, dictated their roles, behaviors, and opportunities. Today, as India strides forward into progress, women from different parts of the country constantly challenge these stereotypes, rewrite narratives, and stand their ground in this modern world.
Indian society, just like most others, was patriarchal. Women had the status of nothing more than custodians and housewives, heavily restricted to the realm of the domestic sphere. Men were held to be breadwinners and decision-makers. These roles were further fortified through cultural and religious practice and the common sense and mores of the time.
Old perceptions have such leftovers as "Girls shouldn't play sports," "Engineering is for boys," or "Women are not natural leaders." Such stereotypes restrict women's choices and deny the society their potential.
Indian women, from the boardroom to Bollywood, from villages in rural India to urban landscapes, break their myriad stereotypes in every possible dimension.
Leadership: Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw of biotech, Indira Nooyi of global business, and political leaders like Mamata Banerjee and Sushma Swaraj prove that leadership has no gender discrimination.
Sports: Women icons like Mary Kom and PV Sindhu have broken the notion that sport is a manly domain and inspired millions of young girls to think big.
Science and Technology: Women scientists like Tessy Thomas, popularly known as the "Missile Woman of India," have opened up avenues for a number of others in areas that otherwise were a man's preserve.
Change: Even rural women are bringing about change. Whether leading panchayats as sarpanchs or running self-help groups as entrepreneurs, they are breaking conventions and changing their worlds.
Role of Education: Education is a very effective tool to break all stereotypes. The "Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao" campaign, which gives importance to girls' education and attacks the biases of society against them, focuses on creating level playing fields for both genders.
Public awareness and media participation in such issues also are substantial for changing societal perception. Films like Dangal and Chak De! India bring out the power of the female fraternity as they have equal opportunities, bringing about a shift in the public opinion.
Such transition towards a more gender equal society involves not just women going out of their stereotypical roles but the whole of society understanding and breaking the shackles. The more women challenge and redefine their roles, the more they empower themselves and lay down a firm ground for a new, more inclusive, and progressive India.

[ad_1] Satwik and Chirag in the frame. (PC: BAI) The Indira Gandhi Stadium in Delhi was filled to the brim as excitement soared for the quarter-finals of India Open 2025. Little did the fans know that they were in for a rollercoaster ride as two out of three Indian quarter-finalists crashed out of the tournament. The fan favourite duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty were the only highlights of the day as they won in style against the Korean pair of Yong Jin and Kang Min Hyuk. Satwik-Chirag bring their A-game It was once again the duo of Sat-Chi that made the day worthwhile for the fans. They won 21-10, 21-17 against South Korea’s Yong Jin and Kang Min Hyuk in a dominating affair that left no room for the Korean duo to make an entry into the game. Year after year, at the India Open, fans queue in to watch the ‘Brothers of Destruction’ in action and they do not fail to impress. “Right from the get-go, we went all guns blazing and that’s what we wanted to do. We knew if we were slow, they would capitalise on it. We never wanted them to get back into the game, happy that we could take the win,” Chirag said about his strategy. “Manu [Attri] and Sumeeth [Reddy] have been working with us since the Olympics. It’s always good to have seniors, they were our opponents before so they know our game. It’s really nice to have someone local, it becomes much easier when the communication is in a local language,” answered Satwik after he was asked about the duo’s bond with the coaches. PV Sindhu loses out on semi-final berth Former Champion PV Sindhu failed to capitalise on a second game win after a neck-and-neck battle with World No. 5 Gregoria Tunjung. After the Round of 16 match win, Sindhu had emphasised on her upcoming battle with Tunjung and admitted that “it won’t be an easy one”. The 29-year-old had already been struggling with injuries and was aiming for a comeback after being sidelined for six months following the Paris Olympics. After losing the first game, Sindhu made a comeback but some brilliant stroke-play from Tunjung changed the tide of the game. Sindhu lost out on a semi-final berth after a close 21-9, 19-21, 21-17 defeat. “I played a long match and it is sad that I lost in the third game after fighting so hard. The game is such that I have to come back stronger. I’ll have to be much more consistent. It was 17-all in the third game, it was anybody’s game. I should have made her move, there were long rallies, we have to fight for every point,” Sindhu reflected on her loss. “Lots of positives from the tournament, for me to improve these are the matches I need to learn from and come back stronger.” Meanwhile, Kiran George who made it to the quater-finals after pulling off an upset against World No. 17 Frenchman Alex Lenier, lost to China’s Weng Hong Yang 21-13, 21-19. The 24-year-old failed to replicate the same result as his last game. But there’s much to look forward to for the young shuttler, especially considering how far he made in the tournament as someone who was a last-minute entry from the reserve list. On the weekend, the home crowd will have only one Indian team to watch out for as Satwik and Chirag will play third seeded Sze Fei Goh and Nur Izzuddin of Indonesia in the semi-finals. Jan 07, 2025 09:19 PM IST Paris Olympic champions Viktor Axelsen and An Se Young headline the Yonex-Sunrise India Open, featuring top Indian players from Jan 14-19 in Delhi. New Delhi: Paris Olympic champions Viktor Axelsen of Denmark and Korea’s An Se Young will be among the star attractions at the Yonex-Sunrise India Open that kicks off in the Capital’s Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium next week. The January 14-19 tournament will also have a strong Indian presence with double Olympic medallist PV Sindhu, 2022 champion Lakshya Sen, and former world No.1 pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty competing in the BWF Super 750 competition. Denmark's Viktor Axelsen, the Paris Olympic champion, will feature in the India Open in New Delhi next week. (AFP) The tournament, which was elevated to its current status in 2023, is part of the BWF World Tour and offers participants a prize pool of $950,000 along with 11,000 points for the champions. The flagship event for the Badminton Association of India will have a record Indian participation. The hosts are set to field 21 shuttlers across men’s singles (3), women’s singles (4), men’s doubles (2), women’s doubles (8) and mixed doubles (4). In the last two editions, India had 14 entries each. The 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games men’s doubles gold medallists Satwik-Chirag reaching the final and Asian Games bronze medallist HS Prannoy made it to the singles last four stages in 2024. Only two players from the top-20 ranked men’s singles players will be missing while the women’s singles draw will have 14 of the top-20 players competing. With many top players in doubles retiring after the Paris Olympics or changing partners, the paired events are expected to come up with a few surprises. From an Indian perspective, it will be interesting to see how Satwik and Chirag bounce back after the latter’s injury and the Paris Olympics heartbreak after being eliminated in the quarters. The men’s doubles field is led by China’s Paris Olympics silver medal-winning combination of Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang along with Paris bronze medallists Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik of Malaysia, Danish combination of Kim Astrup and Anders Rasmussen and Indonesia’s Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto.
