Contractual employees of Punjab Roadways and Pepsu Road Transport Corporation (PRTC) began a three-day strike on Monday, demanding job regularisation and salary hikes. The strike left commuters stranded at various bus stands as approximately 2,800 buses stayed off the roads. Resham Singh Gill, president of the Punjab Roadways, Punbus, and PRTC Contract Workers’ Union, stated that around 8,000 contractual employees are participating in the protests, which include demonstrations at all 27 bus depots across the state. The union has been advocating for regularisation of jobs, higher salaries, and other benefits. Despite a recent meeting with Punjab Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar, no resolution was reached. As part of their protest, the workers plan to march to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s residence on Tuesday, intensifying their demands for immediate action.
