fun fact about me is that I played the entirety of aitsf and half of aini without using timies. for some reason it didn’t register in my brain that you had to press again to confirm them so I was essentially playing hardmode for no reason.

i wanted to type up some more thoughts about AI spoilers, with some 999 spoilers at the end

so, at the point that i started piecing together the parts of the mystery i’d figured out, i was hindered by one major misconception: that you can only swap minds once. this was largely due to pewter and chief’s warnings that the effects of exceeding the time limit in somnium were “irreversible”. if i wasn’t certain of that, i probably could’ve worked out saito’s method a lot sooner, following the pattern of the prime suspect turning up dead over and over. as it is, i didn’t even work it out until after completing “psyncin’ in the refrain” and even then, it took a few seconds of “wait, how is that even possible?”

one thing i keep thinking back to is how ota and mizuki’s routes both left so alive in iris’s body. my initial fridge horror about this part was imagining him realizing he was in the body of manaka’s baby, and spending his final days languishing in despair and regret before succumbing to brain cancer. well...that seems like the most realistic explanation, but uchikoshi-sensei proposed another outcome (jokingly, but maybe...).

apparently so!iris survives somehow (perhaps by somehow reacquiring control of his own funds to pay for the nanobot operation?) and becomes prime minister of japan. this is so weird and funny to imagine. i could see ota getting involved in the campaign, too.

also, it brings to mind the odd detail that saito chose to alternate between male and female victims in the new cyclops killings. i wonder what the significance of that is? was it something he enjoyed somehow? was he trying to make the experience even more horrible for the murder victims? each male victim would die in a woman’s body, and each female victim would die in a man’s...seems like some weird psychosexual shit going on there, iiiiiif that even makes sense for someone who logically couldn’t exactly have a sexuality.

as simple and shallow as saito and his motives are (no complex motives here, homeboy just loves murder and making date specifically suffer), his methods are fascinating, and it’s wild to think back over how many times one interacts with him in the game unknowingly. i definitely want to replay AI now that i know the truth, especially so i can trace saito’s steps through each route.

saito’s hormonal disorder harkens back to prosopagnosiac gentarou hongou, true antagonist of 999. they both not only lack a common human brain function, but one that facilitates bonding with others. but also...they coexist in their story with someone who has a similar problem, but does not commit evil acts because of it. in 999, snake/light can’t visually distinguish faces--he can’t see, period--but that didn’t turn him into a villain. in AI, i’d argue that aiba is a counterpart to saito; being an artificial intelligence, her “brain” doesn’t use oxytocin either (even though she’s filled with it) and she is absolutely capable of love. funny, isn’t it, that a blind man and a prosthetic eyeball would fill such a similar niche? as someone both disabled and learning about disability advocacy, i definitely approve of the aesop that someone’s disorder might be their reason for their cruel actions, but it isn’t an excuse.

very much digging the vibe of this somnium so far (the icepick indicating the correct key, for instance. i assume thats gonna be a repeated theme) but also oh my fucking god THERE ARE SO MANY DOORS... HOW AM I ALREADY THIS LOW ON TIME AFTER UNLOCKING ONE MENTAL LOCK. GIRL HELP

i will not be resorting to a walkthrough just yet though. im actually having fun and kinda wanna trial and error this even if it takes me multiple restarts :]

at least i can see this time, that'll make navigating easier. but also. uhh. get the strong feeling this might be one where i need to look up some solutions.
