DAILY SCRIPTURE READINGS (DSR) 📚 Group, Wed June 19th, 2024 ... Wednesday of the Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time, Year B
Reading 1
____________
2 Kgs 2:1, 6-14
When the LORD was about to take Elijah up to heaven in a whirlwind,
he and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal.
Elijah said to Elisha, “Please stay here;
the LORD has sent me on to the Jordan.”
“As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live,
I will not leave you,” Elisha replied.
And so the two went on together.
Fifty of the guild prophets followed and
when the two stopped at the Jordan,
they stood facing them at a distance.
Elijah took his mantle, rolled it up
and struck the water, which divided,
and both crossed over on dry ground.
When they had crossed over, Elijah said to Elisha,
“Ask for whatever I may do for you, before I am taken from you.”
Elisha answered, “May I receive a double portion of your spirit.”
“You have asked something that is not easy,” Elijah replied.
“Still, if you see me taken up from you,
your wish will be granted; otherwise not.”
As they walked on conversing,
a flaming chariot and flaming horses came between them,
and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind.
When Elisha saw it happen he cried out,
“My father! my father! Israel’s chariots and drivers!”
But when he could no longer see him,
Elisha gripped his own garment and tore it in two.
Then he picked up Elijah’s mantle that had fallen from him,
and went back and stood at the bank of the Jordan.
Wielding the mantle that had fallen from Elijah,
Elisha struck the water in his turn and said,
“Where is the LORD, the God of Elijah?”
When Elisha struck the water it divided and he crossed over.
Responsorial Psalm

Ps 31:20, 21, 24
R. (25) Let your hearts take comfort, all who hope in the Lord.
How great is the goodness, O LORD,
which you have in store for those who fear you,
And which, toward those who take refuge in you,
you show in the sight of the children of men.
R. Let your hearts take comfort, all who hope in the Lord.
You hide them in the shelter of your presence
from the plottings of men;
You screen them within your abode
from the strife of tongues.
R. Let your hearts take comfort, all who hope in the Lord.
Love the LORD, all you his faithful ones!
The LORD keeps those who are constant,
but more than requites those who act proudly.
R. Let your hearts take comfort, all who hope in the Lord.

Jn 14:23
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Whoever loves me will keep my word,
and my Father will love him
and we will come to him.

Gospel
_____________
Mt 6:1-6, 16-18
Jesus said to his disciples:
"Take care not to perform righteous deeds
in order that people may see them;
otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father.
When you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you,
as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets
to win the praise of others.
Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.
But when you give alms,
do not let your left hand know what your right is doing,
so that your almsgiving may be secret.
And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.
"When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites,
who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners
so that others may see them.
Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.
But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door,
and pray to your Father in secret.
And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.
"When you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites.
They neglect their appearance,
so that they may appear to others to be fasting.
Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.
But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,
so that you may not appear to others to be fasting,
except to your Father who is hidden.
And your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you."

FOCUS AND LITURGY OF THE WORD
There is so much for me to think about and consider in today’s gospel reading. I can think of many gospel stories that speak directly to me, but this one may be at the top of the list. How I wish it wasn’t true. In preparation for writing this reflection, I have reread Matthew’s Gospel many times, and each time, I think of a different instance when I have performed good deeds, prayed, and sacrificed for all the wrong reasons. Writing this reflection has been an exercise in humility, which is exactly why I am grateful for this opportunity.
Many years ago, I came across the saying, “How you do anything is how you do everything.” I have grown to love and appreciate this pearl of wisdom the older I get because it continues to teach me about how my actions and intentions come together. Many times throughout my adult life, I have volunteered at my church, our kid’s school, local non-profit organizations, or my workplace to help out with various activities. And I would like to think I did so for all the right reasons – because they needed an extra hand. But, if I’m honest, there were times I did so because it would earn favor with my pastor, the principal, or my co-workers and boss. Why?
The same goes for praying. On many Sundays, I love to stand outside the church after mass to talk with people. I love to say hello to my friends, but I also think a part of me wants to feel good about them knowing I went to church, too. Or how about that work project that I spent so much time completing? Did I act more tired than I really was from all the late nights just so others would think I was a hard worker and sacrificed my time and sleep for the greater good of the company? Yes, most certainly I did. Why?
Why have there been times when my actions and intentions were not aligned? It doesn’t seem hard to answer my own question…my ego loves the attention. Getting praise from my peers for helping out, going to church, or putting in the extra effort on a project seems to be some sort of fuel for my actions. But after reflecting on it for a good long time, that reward, compared to the reward when my intentions are in the right alignment, doesn’t even compare. I think this is what Jesus means when he says, “Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.” Yes, it is a reward, but not THE reward…”And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.” The quick “feel good” that my ego receives somehow always fades quickly and is never enough. But, the reward I receive from doing good things, praying, or sacrificing without the fanfare when my intentions are rightly aligned is always enough and has a kind of staying power and depth that my ego rewards just cannot match.
I think I am starting to understand the kind of “payment” that comes from our Father that Jesus is talking about. It’s subtle, quiet, and peaceful but also full of some kind of endless energy that is difficult to describe. And it makes me want more! “How you do anything is how you do everything!” Such wisdom. It’s time to align my anything and everything with right intention

SAINT OF THE DAY
Saint Romuald
(c. 950 – June 19, 1027)
Saint Romuald’s Story
In the midst of a wasted youth, Romuald watched his father kill a relative in a duel over property. In horror he fled to a monastery near Ravenna. After three years, some of the monks found him to be uncomfortably holy and eased him out.
Romuald spent the next 30 years going about Italy, founding monasteries and hermitages. He longed to give his life to Christ in martyrdom, and got the pope’s permission to preach the gospel in Hungary. But he was struck with illness as soon as he arrived, and the illness recurred as often as he tried to proceed.
During another period of his life, Romuald suffered great spiritual dryness. One day as he was praying Psalm 31 (“I will give you understanding and I will instruct you”), he was given an extraordinary light and spirit which never left him.
At the next monastery where he stayed, Romuald was accused of a scandalous crime by a young nobleman he had rebuked for a dissolute life. Amazingly, his fellow monks believed the accusation. He was given a severe penance, forbidden from offering Mass, and excommunicated—an unjust sentence that he endured in silence for six months.
The most famous of the monasteries Romuald founded was that of the Camaldoli in Tuscany. Here began the Order of the Camaldolese Benedictines, uniting the monastic and eremitical lives. In later life Romuald’s own father became a monk, wavered, and was kept faithful by the encouragement of his son.
Reflection
__________
Christ is a gentle leader, but he calls us to total holiness. Now and then, men and women are raised up to challenge us by the absoluteness of their dedication, the vigor of their spirit, the depth of their conversion. The fact that we cannot duplicate their lives does not change the call to us to be totally open to God in our own particular circumstances.

• The Holy Bible is real news, Biblical prophecies are today's news headlines!•  Keep a repentant and sincere heart.
• Seek the Lord while He may be found. (Isaiah 55:6-7)• Salvation through Jesus Christ is for all people. Jesus Christ loves and died for ALL ethnicities. He does not esteem one ethnic group over another. The Lord looks at the heart, not the outward appearance... · "... For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." -1 Samuel 16:7 · "For there is no respect of persons with God." -Romans 2:11
• I believe Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6)
• I do not rely on preachers and teachers to spoon-feed me Biblical scripture; I study the Holy Bible/Biblical Scripture for myself ("Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." -2 Timothy 2:15). What I've studied and stored in my heart is continuously with me.
• Although I do not depend on or expect ‘preachers and teachers’ to spoon-feed me God’s Word, I am grateful for and respect Holy Ghost-filled and knowledgeable Christian leaders (e.g. pastors, ministers, teachers, etc.) Specifically: David Wilkerson, Emery Moss, George William Bogle Sr., G. Craige Lewis, George Bogle, Derek Prince, R.D. Henton, Charles Lawson, Dr. Kent Hovind, Amir Tsarfati, Jack Van Impe, Jacob Prasch, John Haller, etc.
• You need to understand why and what you believe. (*It is ok to ask sincere questions.)
• Modern-day ‘Pharisees’ do exist. Pharisees are religious judgmental hypocritical individuals; They are NOT real Christians! Too many fake so-called 'Christians' pretend to love the Lord and people but their actions and the way they live their lives are contrary to what they say they believe.
• Going to church doesn’t automatically make someone a Christian. There are many snakes and wolves that attend church services.
• Seeking Jesus Christ should always be a personal choice.
• Do NOT be lukewarm. (Revelation 3:15-16)
Tumblr media
As long as you are alive you have a chance to repent and seek Jesus. He is the ONLY (and eternal) hope in this lost and dying world. Jesus loves us and wants us all to be right with Him.
Tumblr media
PS.: There is an agenda bigger than being 💉ed or un💉. It is about CONTROL! No matter what political leaders, media or 'influencers' say, freedom of choice is important (those who think otherwise aren't intelligent!).
Life as we know it will never be the same. 'Normal' is never coming back (and it has nothing to do with a pandemic.) The 2020 pandemic was used as a springboard to bring forth a NWO (as described in Biblical scripture).
If you know, you know. If you don't know, I hope you wake up to what is truly occurring.

Matureness and fullness of Christian life; gifts of the Spirit.
Many Christians are living far below the fullness of God's plan for their lives. God has much in store for us, if we can grow to matureness in our faith, and receive the fullness of the gifts of the Spirit which God has for us. If we spend enough time every day studying the Bible and praying, and asking God to reveal to us what He wants us to do and be, we can grow to a fullness of knowledge and wisdom in the Lord Jesus Christ. We must pray and ask our Father for the fullness of his knowledge, wisdom and gifts of the Holy Spirit. He will reveal and give as He chooses and at what He knows is the right time. But we must keep on spending time with Him and keep on asking. God has exciting and important plans for our lives - beyond what we can imagine. The Holy Spirit will guide us in everything.
If you are part of an assembly (church): The offices and the gifts of the Spirit are used in a way that Christians can minister to each other whatever is needed. If the gifts of the Spirit do not operate in your assembly, the whole assembly should pray for the gifts, and God will at the right time answer the prayers. Be aware that in these, the end times, the Holy Spirit can give various new gifts which are not mentioned in the Bible, also to children. God works in new ways in the end times.
Difficult times are coming, and the enemy is hard at work to destroy our faith and to push the Holy Spirit out of the assemblies (churches) and out of our lives. But we must stand firm in the Spirit, because without the gifts it is going to become extremely difficult for us to function and survive as Christian assemblies under the cunning and powerful onslaught of demons, false prophets and false teachers.
God runs the assembly (church) through the Holy Spirit. The offices are appointed by the Holy Spirit, and the gifts of the Spirit are given as the Spirit chooses.
Ps 16:11 [WEB] You will show me the path of life. In your presence is fullness of joy. In your right hand there are pleasures forever more.
John 1:16 [WEB] From his fullness we all received grace upon grace.
Eph 3:16-21 [WEB] that he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, that you may be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner person, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, to the end that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be strengthened to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and height and depth, and to know Christ’s love which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to him be the glory in the assembly and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.
Eph 4:11-13 WEB He gave some to be apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, shepherds [or, pastors] and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, to the work of serving, to the building up of the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a full grown man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ…
1Cor 12:28 [WEB] (offices and gifts of the Spirit) God has set some in the assembly: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracle workers, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, and various kinds of languages.
1Cor 12:7-11 [WEB] (gifts of the Spirit) But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the profit of all. For to one is given through the Spirit the word of wisdom, and to another the word of knowledge, according to the same Spirit; to another faith, by the same Spirit; and to another gifts of healings, by the same Spirit; and to another workings of miracles; and to another prophecy; and to another discerning of spirits; to another different kinds of languages; and to another the interpretation of languages. But the one and the same Spirit produces all of these, distributing to each one separately as he desires.

Its time to MOVE – God is near…
Joshua 1: 2-3
Get Ready to Move
God said to Joshua: ‘Moses my servant is dead. Now get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give [you]. I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses. Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the great river, the Euphrates to the Great Sea on the west. No one will be able to stand up against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you;
I will never leave you nor forsake you.
Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their forefathers to give them’ (vv. 2-6).
When his time came to lead, Joshua was ready. Until then, he faithfully served Moses and found fulfilment in the number-two slot. He didn’t push and he didn’t play politics; he just prepared himself. And when he was ready, God promoted him.
He went further than his mentor did. Moses’ leadership ended where the Promised Land began. Under Joshua’s leadership, Israel would move into it and become a great nation. Every day he had spent in the wilderness equipped him for this moment.
God told Joshua:
‘I will give you every place where you set your foot.’
Step out in faith and claim it. It’s yours, if you’re willing to walk towards it and take possession.
‘No one will be able to stand up against you all the days of your life’ (v. 5).
Will you face criticism?  Will you come under attack? Yes.
But every battle you fight is just an opportunity for God to show Himself strong on your behalf.
‘As I was with Moses, so I will be with you’ (v. 5).
If you’re anxious about the future, recall God’s faithfulness to you in the past.
At the end of his life Joshua wrote: ‘Now I am about to go the way of all the earth. You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the Lord your God gave you has failed. Every promise has been fulfilled.’ (Joshua 23:14).
Are you standing today at the crossroads of change, contemplating a new season and feeling anxious about it?
God never wastes experience.  Everything you’ve been through, including the things you didn’t understand, are preparation for what God has in store for you…
If you’ve ever packed up and moved to another house, you may remember saying, ‘This is the last time I’m moving!’
‘Be strong and very courageous’ (Joshua 1:7).
Why? Because Joshua’s enemies were going to attack him and his own people were going to make endless demands on him.
Where do you find courage?
‘The Lord is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid?’
You are held in the safety of God’s strong arms.  Nothing can get to you, without first coming through Him.
‘Have courage for the great sorrows of life, and patience for the small ones.  And when you have laboriously accomplished your daily task, go to sleep in peace. God is awake.’ ~Victor Hugo
‘I will never leave you nor forsake you’ (Joshua 1:5).

In my heart, I store up your words so I might not sin against you. — Ps 119:11
The Prayer: “Teach me Thy statutes” occurs eight times in this wonderful Psalm. It may be said to be its keynote. God’s statutes are the path of purity. If a young man will take heed to them, his way will be cleansed. The passage of the Word of God through the heart, like the running of clean water through a pipe, will purify it. Constant study of the Bible is the condition of soul health.
Consecration is closely associated with Bible study (Psa 119:10). Holiness is wholeness—that is, the whole-hearted devotion of a whole nature to God, the consecration of every power to His service. This leads us to lean hard on God and to seek His companionship and fellowship. Psalm 119:11 tells us of a good thing laid up in a good place and the result. Amid a London season and the stir and turmoil of a political crisis, William Wilberforce wrote in his diary: “Walked from Hyde Park Comer, repeating the 119th Psalm in great comfort”; John Ruskin said: “It is strange that of all the pieces of the Bible which my mother taught me, that which cost me most to learn, and which to my child’s mind was most repulsive the 119th Psalm, has now become, of all, the most precious to me in-its glorious passion for the law of God.”
The study of the Bible enables us to bear witness to God (Psa 119:13). An inspector on one of our railways once told me that he had a vision of God while studying his Bible and kneeling in prayer. From this, he went to his duties on the station platform. At one end of the train, a man offered him some whisky, but he was able to answer, “I have had a better drink than that,” and pointed him to the Water of Life (Jn 4:14; Rev 22:17). At the other end of the train, another man asked him for a Testament, the slang phrase for a pack of cards, and my friend was able to pass on to him a Pocket Testament! It is when the Word of God fills the heart that it overflows through the lips and actions, and it is what flows over from us that helps and blesses our fellow men and women. “‘Out of him shall flow rivers of living water.” Let us live in fellowship with God through His Word. This will light up our lives with gladness amid many sorrows. Wait not for Heaven, but here and now, daily, be joyful in heart and life (Psa 119:14-16).
Prayer
Open Thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of Thy law. Amen.

DAILY SCRIPTURE READINGS (DSR) 📚 Group, Thu May 23rd, 2024 ... Thursday of the Seventh Week in Ordinary Time, Year B
Reading 1
_________
Jas 5:1-6
Come now, you rich, weep and wail over your impending miseries.
Your wealth has rotted away, your clothes have become moth-eaten,
your gold and silver have corroded,
and that corrosion will be a testimony against you;
it will devour your flesh like a fire.
You have stored up treasure for the last days.
Behold, the wages you withheld from the workers
who harvested your fields are crying aloud;
and the cries of the harvesters
have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts.
You have lived on earth in luxury and pleasure;
you have fattened your hearts for the day of slaughter.
You have condemned;
you have murdered the righteous one;
he offers you no resistance.
Responsorial Psalm
_______________
Ps 49:14-15ab, 15cd-16, 17-18, 19-20
R. (Matthew 5:3) Blessed are the poor in spirit; the Kingdom of heaven is theirs!
This is the way of those whose trust is folly,
the end of those contented with their lot:
Like sheep they are herded into the nether world;
death is their shepherd and the upright rule over them.
R. Blessed are the poor in spirit; the Kingdom of heaven is theirs!
Quickly their form is consumed;
the nether world is their palace.
But God will redeem me
from the power of the nether world by receiving me.
R. Blessed are the poor in spirit; the Kingdom of heaven is theirs!
Fear not when a man grows rich,
when the wealth of his house becomes great,
For when he dies, he shall take none of it;
his wealth shall not follow him down.
R. Blessed are the poor in spirit; the Kingdom of heaven is theirs!
Though in his lifetime he counted himself blessed,
"They will praise you for doing well for yourself,"
He shall join the circle of his forebears
who shall never more see light.
R. Blessed are the poor in spirit; the Kingdom of heaven is theirs!
Alleluia

See 1 Thes 2:13
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Receive the word of God, not as the word of men,
but as it truly is, the word of God.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

________
Mk 9:41-50
Jesus said to his disciples:
"Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink
because you belong to Christ,
amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his reward.
"Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin,
it would be better for him if a great millstone
were put around his neck
and he were thrown into the sea.
If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off.
It is better for you to enter into life maimed
than with two hands to go into Gehenna,
into the unquenchable fire.
And if your foot causes you to sin, cut if off.
It is better for you to enter into life crippled
than with two feet to be thrown into Gehenna.
And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out.
Better for you to enter into the Kingdom of God with one eye
than with two eyes to be thrown into Gehenna,
where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.
"Everyone will be salted with fire.
Salt is good, but if salt becomes insipid,
with what will you restore its flavor?
Keep salt in yourselves and you will have peace with one another."
***
FOCUS AND LITURGY OF THE WORD
After reading today’s scripture passages, I made a mental list of things in my life that have enabled me to sin in big or small ways. I had an extensive list. I was ready to start making concrete plans to cut off all the things that I know cause me to sin; the things that separate me from God. Then I realized one thing; I had not added grief to the list. Yes… grief.
Grief and all its tentacles often leads to the sin of separating ourselves from God. Grief and our desire to seek refuge in that place, often leads to the sin of acting out of anger and fear. Grief prompts us to isolate ourselves from those who love us and find warmth in our sadness and loss. Grief leads us to the sin of holding on to the things that do not let us live; things that steal our breath of life.
I have been taught to lean into grief and show no resistance. I have been taught to allow myself to cry and vent as much as I want until I have had enough of grieving, and then get on with my life. However, grief, I have found, is like salt. Just enough grieving and we come out on the other end feeling much more spiritually flavorsome, but too much grieving, and our soul begins to corrode in small ways. If we are to cut off that which makes us sin, how do we cut off grief? If grieving too long dulls our spiritual salt that gives us our uniquely beautiful flavor, how do we let go? If grieving allows us to heal and move forward, at what point would I consider it to be fair to let it go?
Today’s gospel makes it seem so easy to just cut something off when it causes us to sin. But it isn’t easy, is it? Removing the things in our life that separate us from the unconditional love of God should be easy, and yet, we hold on to our vices, our hurts, our frustrations, our grudges, and our fears. I have not figured out why my first instinct is usually to hide in my grief rather than run to Jesus, who is the healer of wounded souls. But one thing I do know is that it takes courage to grieve well. It takes courage to let go of that which separates us from God. It takes courage to retain our spiritual flavor that allows us to live in peace with ourselves and others. It takes courage to allow ourselves to be poor in spirit by giving up all the things that prevent us from experiencing God’s love and peace in our lives. It takes courage to offer no resistance when the opportunity arises to let go.
Let's pray ...
Merciful and loving God, grant us the courage to let go of all that prevents us from completely loving God, self, and others. Amen.

SAINT OF THE DAY
Saint Gregory VII
(c. 1025 – May 25, 1085)
Saint Gregory VII’s Story
The 10th century and the first half of the 11th were dark days for the Church, partly because the papacy was the pawn of various Roman families. In 1049, things began to change when Pope Leo IX, a reformer, was elected. He brought a young monk named Hildebrand to Rome as his counselor and special representative on important missions. Hildebrand was to become Gregory VII.
Three evils plagued the Church then: simony–the buying and selling of sacred offices and things; the unlawful marriage of the clergy; and lay investiture—kings and nobles controlling the appointment of Church officials. To all of these Hildebrand directed his reformer’s attention, first as counselor to the popes and later as pope himself.
Gregory’s papal letters stress the role of the bishop of Rome as the vicar of Christ and the visible center of unity in the Church. He is well known for his long dispute with Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV over who should control the selection of bishops and abbots.
Gregory fiercely resisted any attack on the liberty of the Church. For this he suffered and finally died in exile. He said, “I have loved justice and hated iniquity; therefore, I die in exile.” Thirty years later the Church finally won its struggle against lay investiture. The liturgical feast of Saint Gregory VII is celebrated on May 25.
Reflection
__________
The Gregorian Reform, a milestone in the history of Christ’s Church, was named after this man who tried to extricate the papacy and the whole Church from undue control by civil rulers. Against an unhealthy Church nationalism in some areas, Gregory reasserted the unity of the whole Church based on Christ, and expressed in the bishop of Rome, the successor of Saint Peter.

St. Peter The Rock Part
Is St. Peter no more The Rock? Part One
We should not rewrite the Bible.
In Matthew 16:15, JESUS addressed all the 12 Apostles thus:
He said to them, But who do you [yourselves] say that I am?
In Matthew 16:16 only Peter responded divinely correctly thus:
Simon Peter replied, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.
How could he have known if he had not "burned the midnight oil". Thinking, meditating, and praying, asking GOD to tell him. And GOD hearken to him. The result is found in Matthew 16:17.
"Then Jesus answered him, Blessed (happy, fortunate, and to be envied) are you, Simon Bar-Jonah. For flesh and blood [men] have not revealed this to you, but My Father Who is in heaven."
Why didn't GOD reveal it to the remaining 11? Some may say, Yes, GOD chose him aforehand for that role. But I say with privileges come responsibilities. Sensing his role, an unseen Hand was propelling him along, and he released himself to be used.
(Compare Peter to Adam and Samson. The last two had privileges but faltered at the most important moments to show their responsibilities.)
And in Matthew 16:18 is the oft-misinterpreted Living Word of CHRIST:
"And I tell you, you are Peter [Greek, Petros–a large piece of rock], and on this rock [Greek, petra–a huge rock like Gibraltar] I will build My church, and the gates of Hades (the powers of the infernal region) shall not overpower it [or be strong to its detriment or hold out against it]."
HE was addressing Peter directly. Questions you should pose and answer are
1. Why did CHRIST use the name of Peter if HE was generalising?
2. Why the use of rock for Peter?
3. Could CHRIST have made a mistake in using rock for Peter?
4. Was CHRIST addressing Paul when he has not even come into reckoning? Was Paul martyred before Peter?
5. Was there a Church before Pentecost? And therefore meant specifically all the Body of CHRIST?
And Matthew 16:19 is even more glorious.
"I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind (declare to be improper and unlawful) on earth must be what is already bound in heaven; and whatever you loose (declare lawful) on earth must be what is already loosed in heaven." [Isa. 22:22.]
Take the time and read Proverbs 2:1-15 below.
"MY SON, if you will receive my words and treasure up my commandments within you,
"Making your ear attentive to skillful and godly Wisdom and inclining and directing your heart and mind to understanding [applying all your powers to the quest for it];
"Yes, if you cry out for insight and raise your voice for understanding,
"If you seek [Wisdom] as for silver and search for skillful and godly Wisdom as for hidden treasures,
"Then you will understand the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of [our omniscient] God. [Prov. 1:7.]
"For the Lord gives skillful and godly Wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.
"He hides away sound and godly Wisdom and stores it for the righteous (those who are upright and in right standing with Him); He is a shield to those who walk uprightly and in integrity,
"That He may guard the paths of justice; yes, He preserves the way of His saints. [I Sam. 2:9; Ps. 66:8, 9.]
"Then you will understand righteousness, justice, and fair dealing [in every area and relation]; yes, you will understand every good path.
"For skillful and godly Wisdom shall enter into your heart, and knowledge shall be pleasant to you.
"For skillful and godly Wisdom shall enter into your heart, and knowledge shall be pleasant to you.
"Discretion shall watch over you, understanding shall keep you,
"To deliver you from the way of evil and the evil men, from men who speak perverse things and are liars,
"Men who forsake the paths of uprightness to walk in the ways of darkness,
"Who rejoice to do evil and delight in the perverseness of evil,
"Who are crooked in their ways, wayward and devious in their paths."
(Proverbs 2:1-15, The Amplified Bible).
