In Dekalb's vibrant 90's scene,

A crew of 20, wild and carefree

303 Campusview, our hangout spot,

Diversions, where shows were humid and hot.

Kegs and Eggs, a morning delight,

NIU's Homecoming game, a disappointing sight.

9pm Pizzas from Pag's, a food coma fate,

Beer Nuggets, the exclusive snack, can't wait.

Cornfest and Parents' Weekend, college pride,

Memories etched, forever inside.

Storming the Tower, a daredevil's thrill,

Kishwaukee River's waters, beware, where the waters still..

The Twombly house burned down one fiery night.

Greeks they clashed, restaurants ablaze, in a bitter fight.

BBQ Jerry's flavors,

Crazy Lisa's grin, bible in hand,

Scott Pasture's laughter, keystone in a can..

Around the Clock Coffee, Junction's fries delight.

Shawn Beck, the teaser, Frat boys they fight.

Miles Gillott, a friend, forever in our hearts,

A bond so strong, though some have fallen apart.

Otto's and Stanley's, beer pong, and cheer,

Pounding drinks, making memories, year after year,

We walked everywhere, with little to no dough,

Drinking, smoking, chiefing, our spirits aglow.

Though some are lost, and others we hold tight,

Our Dekalb crew, forever shining bright.

In the 90's haze, our youth, our prime,

A time capsule, of memories, sublime.

How did we met?

A LITTLE HISTORY:

Jhunie has never had any girlfriend since birth. Charrie has never been into another relationship after her first failed relationship.

And everything changes until…

Charrie gave her best friend a Square-shaped Photo Frame, Pen Holder with Music when you rotate it.

She bought Yellow Color for herself; and Blue for her bestfriend, Cathy. :)

Charrie placed pictures of her and Cathy on each of the four frames.

Cathy brought this gift to the office and place it on her desk.

Cathy is Jhunie’s officemate.

Jhunie first saw Charrie here.

Charrie shared her version of the story:

I have no plans yet of finding someone in my life despite my 26 years of age.

I have been single for some years now and i don’t mind being single for few years more.

Its a choice that I made.

There are instances where I can already be with someone but i still chose not to.

I had some suitors, but i always choose to just be friends with them and remain single.

My reason?

I find it hard to trust men again.

But I know and believe that God will still give me a reason to be happy.

True enough, I was enjoying my work, busy fulfilling my dreams, and just having fun as single.

Although I admit that whenever my best friend, Cathy, shares stories about Jhunie,

it gives me a reason to smile and feel appreciated.

“But I do not want to think about it that much because i don’t want to expect anything.”

“I am happy now being single, and i feel that since I have surpassed the stage of moving on and finding my new self, i dont want to be in that stage again where i’ll have love problems and be in pain.”

so after 3 months of sharing stories about Jhunie -

he finally asked for my number from Cathy.

But two (2) months have already gone by, and yet I still have not received a single text.

Unfortunately, Cathy was out of the country and so, i do not have a way to know.

It was after two (2) months, when i knew that he LOST my number.

Please do not laugh.hehehe okay, you may, cause im laughing too while writing this.hehehe

So after Five (looong) months…

He finally sent his FIRST text. 

He introduced himself to me in his text.

And he added that all he wanted is a new friend. That’s all.

And so, i said, it is better that way.

On my part - i made it clear that I do not want an “Eye Ball” or to meet, unless it is already at least three months.

He said, it is better that way too, since he does not want an “Eye Ball” either. (Wow!hehe Imagine the rules?hehe)

at first, i was not into entertaining him.

but God did His works.

He gave me signs - which i want to keep private (but some of my friends knows this)

I experienced situations which allowed me to give attention to jhunie and notice him.

Its like an eye-opener…

it felt like God is putting a spotlight on him.

and telling me, “LOOK AT THIS GUY”

and so, i tried.

but i still have doubts.

i still did not believe that he could be that somebody in my life.

as i begin to know him thru text, these were some of the things that were going through my mind - “he is just kind because we are starting to be friends. but he will just be like anyone else. he will soon hurt me and give me pain. i know. thats how it is. thats how love is”

i did not believe the things that he’s telling me.

i was not convince at all.

i felt - that this were all just his best food forward.

that its impossible to find a good man at this point.

and then, i felt embarrassed. why?

because after few events in my life, i was able to confirm that i was wrong, and he was right.

he is real. he is true.

and i know that it was God who showed me ways to know.

i felt so bad.

i got mad at myself for being the person that i was.

for not believing in him and not trying to trust.

i knew he did not deserve all this.

he deserves a clean plate.

i feel sad for him, and for myself.

and It was after three (3) months of texting

that i finally gave in and decided to meet him.

my mindset on this meeting was simply - to gain a new friend. thats it.

maybe God wants me to be friends with him because he needs my help in something.

i honestly dont want to expect anything. especially that i dont know him yet, and i dont know what will happen after.

but the day i met jhunie - it was happiness :)

a diiferent kind.

its a friendly group date but - somehow, its different.

as i am observing him and looking at him…

i felt the person that i am texting and the person who is infront of me is the same. he is true to his words - hindi siya bolero.

physically - he looks very simple, which is what i really want. simple and presentable. :)

but what i really like about him is the way he carries himself. his humble, shy, hindi mayabang, and most importantly - he looks studious. :)

i love intelligent-looking men. i dont know why. i find it attractive when men wears eyeglasses and looks very studious. 

plus, singkit. i really like that. :)

so jhunie physically has things that i love - studious looking (wearing eyeglasses) and being singkit, plus quiet type.

so... pwede!!!hehehe

anyway, while i was looking at him, i realized that i want to take care of this guy. (hehehe)

that night, he was so quiet and looks so tired, and so i felt that if we became friends, i will help him with his daily life.

because maybe, my mission is to be friends with him so that someone will help him cope up with his busy and workaholic attitude.

i keep repeating on my mind that i am not expecting anything on this date. my mindset was just to meet him and gain a new friend.

but honestly, the way he sat down on that couch while we are having our coffee, i felt that i wanted to give him a warm hug to ease his tiredness.

may pagnanasa na?hehe

anyway, i dont know. but thats what ive felt at that time, and i just want to open it now.hehe

i wanted to be the friend that he might need.

a friend from far away (since we live in the province) and a friend thats outside his work and usual group.

at the end of the night, on the way home…

i was smiling, cause it was a good night.

and i knew that jhunie was different from the others.

And in my heart I felt that…

“IF it is Jhunie, its worth the try again, its worth the pain again.”

and then, somehow, i started to see him the way i think God wanted me to see him.

for me, its not so hard to fall in love with someone like jhunie.

he is genuinely kind.

i saw his innocence.

and i saw the fragile part in him.

i saw him this time, not in a friendship level.

im beginning to see him in a romantic side.

i ate all the words i said.

he is really someone with a good heart.

he is genuine.

he is really somebody else.

jhunie slowly gave color into my life.

im beginning to sing love songs again, in a different tune.hehe

he made my heart smile again...

and replaced all the pain and doubts with

honesty and genuine love.

and with him - i slowly learn to trust again.

Since then, my weekends are always spent with him.

And as i get close to him more, i saw what God is trying to show me.

“That sometimes, it only takes a true good man to make you see things the right way. “

As time goes…

I was changing - my views, perspective, feelings and beliefs.

I felt changed and renewed.

Jhunie unintentionally influenced me with his genuine personality.

And slowly, i fall…

Going to mass every Sunday was our usual activity.

Enjoying the weekend and each other’s company.

And after a year, everything was a history.

We became officially boyfriend/girlfriend.

“So if ever you’ll come to a point of loosing hope on love..

Dreams still come true.”

When Jhunie and Charrie started building their relationship,

Cathy decided to give her Blue Pen Holder to Jhunie.

She said that it has already served its purpose

and should be given to the person who deserves it more.

after 2yrs simula nung nagkapandemic, ngayon na lang ulit ngpabakasyon..gusto ko din umuwi pero ang dami ko pang bayarin, gusto ko munang matapos ang utang ko sa office, utang namin sa lupa at mkpag ipon naman ako kahit konti..namimiss ko na sila pero mas kelangan ko munang manatili at magtiis pa ng ilang bwan para makasama sila..Lord, bigyan mo pa ako ng lakas para kayanin ko pa ang mga darating na araw na mangyayari sakin. di ko kaya pag mag isa lang ako, kelangan ko po kayo..alam ko hindi madali, pero alam kong kaya ko at kasama ko kayo..wala po akong ibang hiling kundi maging maayos yung buhay namin ng pamilya ko, maging masaya at wala silang mga sakit..wala naman po akong ibang hiling kundi maging ok lang sila...makaya din nila yung hirap at hindi naman lahat talaga madali, nahohomesick na po ako minsan Lord, pero salamat kasi hindi niu pdin ako pinapabayaan mag isa. Lord, tulungan niu po akong maging isang mabuti at mabaet na tao..tulungan niu po akong malaman kung ano yung purpose ko sa buhay, gusto ko pong madami pa akong matutunan sa buhay...kung pano pa lumawak yung mindset ko, at tulungan niu po akong makayanan lahat ng pagsubok na ibibigay niu para sakin. Tulungan niu po akong maging deserving sa mga bagay na ibibigay niu para sakin. Salamat Lord sa lahat at hindi niu ako hinahayaan na mag isa. 😊

FYI Para sa mga nagkapimples while using any brand of Skin Care Products. Yung lumalabas pong pimples ay tinatawag na "Demodex". Ito ay ang skin bug na nagtatago sa ilalim ng ating balat. Hair & Makeup: by Ms. Pong Niu and George Aliben

  Ms. Pong Niu - did my make up.

She was very professional, careful and keen on giving me a "fresh" look.

    George Aliben - did my hair, place my hairband and veil. :)

    Together - they gave me this look for my wedding day. :)

  They were both very helpful to us, especially before my Bridal walk.

I still remember how they helped me with my migraine just before I walked down the aisle.

They gave me medicine, water and the best medicine ever - laughter. :)

  I felt that Ms. Pong and George were rejoicing deep inside when i got better. They did what they have to do - retouch.

But they did more - they coached me and gave me directions on how should i project once the door opens.

    And it doesn't end there - they were giving us a breather (laughter) during our retouch before the program starts at the reception.

  So you see - they are more than a makeup artist and hairstylist to us.

Quest for my HMUA

Wow, it's been a month since my last update. I think we finally got our much needed break from the wedding preps. Not to mention our freelance stuff need some undivided attention.

And so, here's a little bit of kwento about our quest for my HMUA on the big day!

Option 1: Pong Niu

I inquired with a couple of makeup artists that were highly recommended in W@W and eventually picked Pong Niu from the list.

Aside from her portfolio, I saw some shots of James (our photographer) where she was the hmua. And I loved it. I'm not too much into natural look, as I want to have a dramatic makeup. No bare eyes and pink lips for me. :)

Fast forward to my trial with her, I must say, she's really hygienic when applying makeup. She makes sure that no part of her skin touches your face. How cool eh? Anyway, I told her I prefer airbrush makeup, but she told me that my skin doesn't really need it so we went with traditional instead.

She did a lot of prepping for my face. I believe she put on some matte-ifying creme on my face, which I really like. The makeup session was quite long. I observed that she's really meticulous with her work and that's really a plus.

Not only her, but her hairstylist that time (I forgot the name) was very attentive to my hair.

I loved both of their works, but, there are some parts that I really didn't like. First were the eyebrows. She used brown for my eyebrows and applied it too thick. It felt like I'm a drag queen. She used pink lipstick, which is not really my color. This is not a major issue since I wanted to try it anyway. Lastly, although my makeup is flawless, it felt really heavy on my face. I'm not really built into using heavy foundation stuff. Not to mention, I told her firsthand that I'm acidic, that my face gets darker overtime when using makeup, but unfortunately she wasn't able to compensate for that. When I got home, my dad didn't like how I look.

For the hair, I have no qualms about it. It was really good. The hairstylist was really into it, I can tell! And it really paid off. My hair was excellent.

     Unfortunately, I booked her right away, so I had to tell her a week after that I'll be using the DP for my prenup instead. :(

Verdict: Makeup has a chance, hairstyle is excellent!

Option 2: Cherry Pacheco

I forgot where did I saw her name, but I think she was highly recommended in GT. Her rates are quite high compared to Pong, but judging from her portfolio, her makeup with chinitas is good.

Fast forward to the trial, I loved the fact that she asked me a lot of questions first. Questions like, what brands do I use, what shades I'm inclined to and vice-versa, etc. It is really important to me that my HMUA understands what I would want to look on my big day. That's a big plus.

This time, I really want to try airbrush, so we did. And, guess what, I really loved it. It feels so light on the skin! Not only that but much faster too. I don't know if it's supposed to be that way but, the airbrushing itself was really short compared to the time I had with Pong and her conventional foundation.

I also told her I prefer redder shades for my lipstick. Either red orange or red pink. We opted for red pink since I told her that my bouquet will be in purple and pink. In the end, it suited me. Super duper love. No light pinks for the big day! Woot!

Unfortunately, her hairstylist was a bit lazy with my hair. I don't know if lazy is the right term but she just doesn't know what to do with my hair with all the pegs that I've showed her. She used too much hair spray for a half-updo. I know it isn't supposed to be that way. In fact, the time with Pong's hairstylist, he barely used any hair products, but it still looked neat and good.

     Verdict: Makeup good, hairstyle bad.

Option 3: Fanny Serrano

The daughters of my mom's close friend had their makeup done by Fanny Serrano. They all loved the work he did and they insisted that I should have a trial with him too.

His rates are definitely higher, but for some reason, his trial session is the cheapest among the three.

I do hope that he could do airbrush makeup too because as far as I know he only do traditional.

I'll be having a trial with him next weekend.

I must say, looking for HMUA supplier is the hardest as of now. It was always easy for me to shortlist and pick my supplier. I only meet with a supplier if I already have some plans on booking them. This is even true for my gown designer, I didn't meet anyone but her. But I guess you really can't avoid it with HMUA. I do like getting my hair and face done, but it is a bit tiring and not to mention expensive!
