Thousands arrive at New Zealand parliament to protest against Maori treaty bill

Tens of thousands of marchers took to the streets of New Zealand’s capital Wellington on Tuesday to oppose legislation that would change a fundamental treaty between the Maori people and the British crown.

For many, it was more than that – a celebration of the revival of the indigenous language and identity that colonisation once nearly destroyed. Shanell Bob said as she waited for the procession to begin:

“We’re just fighting for the rights that our tupuna, our ancestors, fought for.”

Using Maori words for children and grandchildren, she added:

“We’re fighting for our tamariki, for our mokopuna, so they can have what we didn’t have.”

It was probably the country’s largest protest in support of Maori rights – a theme that has troubled modern New Zealand for much of its history – following a long tradition of peaceful marches across the country that have marked pivotal moments in the history of modern New Zealand.

Some marched across the country, and for many the turnout reflected the growing non-Maori solidarity on the issue of indigenous rights.

The march, which began at Cape Reinga and travelled across the North Island, reached Wellington. Before marching to Parliament, tens of thousands of people gathered in Waitangi Park, colouring the skyline with tino rangatiratanga flags, a symbol of Māori sovereignty. Protesters carried placards demanding compliance with the treaty and calling for the bill to be cancelled.

The crowd stretched for almost two kilometres, filling the area around Parliament. Marcher Hayley Komenet emphasised the unity of protesters from different walks of life and condemned the government’s policy as “absolutely ridiculous,” calling the Treaty of Waitangi the country’s constitutional document.

Maori bill

Maori Queen Nga Wai Hono i te po Paki called for dialogue on nationhood and unity, but opposed the unilateral bill, which she said undermines the Treaty of Waitangi. On Monday, her spokeswoman Ngira Simmons said the Queen was not in favour of a bill questioning the historic treaty.

The document, signed in 1840 between Maori and the crown, plays a key role in protecting indigenous rights.

The proposed bill is strongly resented by the public, academics, lawyers and Maori rights groups. Critics fear it will create division, undermine the treaty and damage the relationship between Maori and the authorities.

For 50 years, the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi have evolved through court judgements, tribunals and government agreements to govern Maori and authority relations. Core principles such as participation, partnership, protection and redress have been applied to address Maori social and economic inequalities. A new bill introduced by the libertarian ACT party seeks to replace these established principles.

ACT argues that the current principles have distorted the original purpose of the treaty by creating a dual system of rights and privileges for Maori over other New Zealanders. The party favours ending the “racial divide.”

New Zealand’s parliament was temporarily suspended last week due to Maori politicians performing their ritual haka dance in protest.

MPs were angered by the controversial bill and performed the haka in protest. New Zealand’s youngest MP Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke, who started the ceremonial dance, also tore up a copy of the bill. Parliament was briefly suspended as people in the gallery joined in and the shouts drowned out others in the chamber.

As tensions over the government’s pension reform continue to run high in France, the country’s security forces are being accused of trampling on basic human rights in their handling of mass demonstrations that have drawn hundreds of thousands of people to the streets on an almost weekly basis.

Watchdogs in France and abroad, including Amnesty International and the Council of Europe, are sounding the alarm about an “excessive use of force” by French riot police during the protests, which began in January and are still ongoing, despite losing some steam after the wildly unpopular bill was signed into law earlier this month. France is the homeland of equality, liberty, and fraternity—but not all of its riot police have read the Declaration of the Rights of Man. In recent decades, French police tactics have grown more heavy-handed than elsewhere in Europe, and that matters, because French law enforcement practices extend well beyond France, which trains the security forces of dozens of countries around the world, both democratic and authoritarian.

Members of the Parisian Observatory of Public Freedoms, who have been monitoring the rallies in the French capital from the ground, painted a bleak picture of unwarranted police charges aimed at “terrorizing” protesters, widespread physical and verbal abuse of demonstrators, and indiscriminate use of weapons such as crowd dispersal grenades and rubber bullets. 

There has been “a lot of unjustified tear gassing and bludgeoning,” they said, asking not to be identified by name.

Other European riot police can play hardball, too. Spaniards wreaked havoc with Catalan protesters. Italians beat scores of demonstrators to a pulp at the Genoa G-8 protests in 2001. 

But in recent years, French police have been playing in a different league from everyone else. The country has seen multiple waves of tense demonstrations over workers’ rights, as well as months of unrest beginning in 2018 caused by the “yellow vest” movement against taxes and economic inequality. But many argue that the way French police deal with demonstrators is making things worse. The French approach, which entails a gradual increase in the use of force in response to the level of resistance by protesters, is effectively “an escalation doctrine,” said Sebastian Roché, an expert on policing at Sciences Po university in Grenoble. 

French police are more heavily armed than their colleagues elsewhere in Europe. The LBDs, or riot guns firing rubber bullets that can cause severe injuries or even death, are hardly ever seen in Britain or Germany, while they are used extensively—and often without warning—in France. Those weapons are a big part of the reason French riot police injure and kill more than anywhere else in Europe, said Roché, with 36 people severely mutilated at demonstrations since 2018 and three killed in the last 10 years. 

French police have also come under heavy criticism for surrounding and holding up entire groups of protesters, including peaceful ones, as part of their efforts to restore public order. These “fish traps” often end with scores of detentions, but most are then released within a few hours without any charges—a sign, critics say, that they should have never been taken into custody in the first place. On March 16, some 300 people were detained in Paris alone, but only nine ended up facing judicial proceedings. 

This kind of practice “discourages people from participating in the demonstrations,” said Simon Foreman, of France’s National Consultative Commission on Human Rights. “We have forgotten that the police are a public service that is there to protect the exercise of freedoms, which means protecting demonstrators. Instead, in the French version of maintaining public order, the crowds are seen as hostile, almost as enemies,” he said.

Critics say this attitude is encouraged from the top. Last month, Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin warned that “taking part in an unauthorized demonstration is a crime that justifies being detained,” a statement that many have criticized, since it is incorrect. But violence has come from the demonstrators’ ranks, too, with many episodes of vandalism and attacks on the security forces. About 1,000 cops were injured in the second half of March alone, according to the Interior Ministry. 

Police say they are using the minimum force required to restore order. “The vast majority of the public does not want people to be allowed to smash everything up with impunity, with the French taxpayer having to foot the bill,” said Johann Cavallero of Alliance Police Nationale, a police union.

But France doesn’t just have a problem with protests. Over the past six years, the country has been condemned five times by the European Court of Human Rights over physical abuses committed in other situations by its police, which tend to be less popular than the European average—and much less trusted than their German, British, and Nordic counterparts.

French cops could be brutal in the past, too. In the early 1960s, officers on the orders of Paris police head Maurice Papon massacred dozens (if not hundreds) of peaceful Algerian demonstrators, throwing many of them into the Seine. However, in the 1980s and 1990s, France went through a period of low-intensity protests and lower-intensity policing. That changed with the 2005 riots in the country’s deprived banlieues, said Roché. The use of the LBDs became commonplace, and at demonstrations police began chasing troublemakers, even in the middle of the crowds and at the risk of exacerbating tensions with other protesters, too.

In other countries, they just don’t do it that way, even when there are riots in major cities or yobos on the loose. In countries like the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden, police give warnings and provide key information to protesters by means of large screens and liaison officers. In Spain, the creation of a mediation department made up of police officers trained in sociology and psychology contributed to a 70 percent decline in the number of incidents at rallies between 2011 and 2014. The spread of a de-escalation culture on the continent was also helped by an EU-funded project that saw 20 organizations from 11 European countries come together in the early 2010s to hammer out new ways to reduce tensions between protesters and the police. 

France did not participate. 

To be sure, while French security forces are more heavy-handed than many of their Western counterparts, France remains far from a police state. Several days of mobilization against the pension reform saw the participation of more than 1 million protesters, with most rallies unfolding without major incidents. Even when clashes do break out, the crackdown is a far cry from the military-style equipment that is typically deployed on similar occasions in the United States. And the number of casualties among protesters, while high by European standards, pales compared to the death tolls reported on the other side of the Atlantic. Cops in Toulouse don’t have tanks; in Topeka, they kind of do.

Yet, with the confidence of many French people in the democratic process shaken by President Emmanuel Macron’s decision to force through his embattled pension reform without a vote in Parliament, the strong-arm tactics adopted by the security forces are reinforcing the feeling of an authoritarian slide. 

With another round of nationwide rallies planned for May 1, tensions in the country’s streets are likely far from over. “Sometimes, demonstrations become a release valve for people’s anger against the state,” said Cavallero, of the police union. “Unfortunately, those who are there representing the state are the police,” he said.

Regulus. Doesn’t something about that name feel so desperately, effortlessly familiar? Like reaching out to hold a dead person’s hand? It’s like home- no home he’s ever known if it is, but it doesn’t feel like anything else. Regulus, the name, settles in his chest, and he whispers it: ‘Regulus.’

Regulus smiles. James puts his fingers carefully to his own lips and traces the feel of the name in his mouth. ‘Regulus.’

‘Yes,’ says Regulus, and he looks like he wants to smile. A small dimple has pushed in one of his cheeks, and there’s a careful curl at the corner of his mouth, like he’s holding it back. ‘Do you like it?’

‘Yes,’ James tells him, helpless but to tell the truth. Regulus has a pull to him that James has never felt, like he’s known him before. ‘It’s… quite lovely.’

‘Well, I think you’re quite lovely,’ says Regulus. He has soft curls that land just above his shoulders, and there’s a little of a breeze blowing them gently, and James realises they’ve stopped in the middle of the street. ‘Can I get your name?’

James thinks it over, already knowing he’ll tell him. He likes the way that joy seems to bounce in Regulus’ eyes, having a little fun with the way that James is choosing to interact with him, and it’s the pull of an orbit that makes him step once, quickly, closer to him, trying to drown out all of the people who are pushing around them. Regulus tilts his chin up to look up at him and James smiles.

Eventually, he says, ‘I’m James,’ and Regulus’ own smile finally breaks free.

‘James,’ he breathes, like it’s something he’s been waiting to find- tirelessly searching for. ‘You’re James?’

‘M-hm,’ he hums back; slowly, a little carelessly, maybe. ‘You like it?’

Regulus’ eyes fall shut as the breeze comes back through. Someone knocks into James’ shoulder but he ignores it. The street is loud but not important, not like this feels like it is.

‘I like it a lot,’ Regulus says. ‘I like it a lot, James.’

‘Well,’ says James, feeling a warmth fill his chest like the sun breaking through the clouds. It feels like working quietly outside on a nice day, and he asks, ‘are you going to take me for coffee?’

Regulus’ eyes come back open, and there’s a flood of fondness in his eyes that James can’t understand, but doesn’t want to turn away from. He looks so happy- not that James would know, really. But he does.

‘You have no idea how long I’ve been waiting to hear you ask me that.’

‘Mm,’ James hums again, reaching down carefully to bat at Regulus’ hand with his own, trying to indicate him to follow, walking without thinking on the route to his favourite coffee shop. ‘Since the start of the conversation?’

Regulus only laughs, and then jogs a little to catch up to him so that they walk side-by-side.

Dollie continued as she reached the door. "I cannot possibly leave the owner of the pub out in the cold any longer, though it is also impossible for me to explain any of my information to you when they are present. I suppose that if I wrote it all down, you would be able to read it?" (it's starting to make sense to me why Dollie had no qualms about sending Lucile abroad with no diplomacy training... nobody to teach it to her)

Ahh... Lucile's mom has a very... traditional approach to a woman's role, and when she refused to find a husband after the death of her father (to help 'provide' for the household), her mom kicked her out

Miles, in turn, was raised on the streets and got involved in the Insurgence after saving Dollie's life (Lucile wanted to hear his life story in exchange for offering up hers)

Well they went back and actually met with Lucile's mom, who is Shocked that Lucile went on to join a rebellion and yet she herself is a contact in said rebellion

Ending Thoughts:

After running through these chapters, where we see all of our main cast largely in their elements (Ross only makes an appearance, but he got spotlight earlier), I think I can confidently say that Lionel is probably my favorite character, but Miles and Lucile have the most interesting story so far. Lionel is just an absolute sweetheart. He's so genuinely good, in a story that's filled with people who, even on the side of 'good' (even kickstarting the rebellion, *cough* Dollie *cough*), aren't. Most of them are allowed at least little shades of gray - Ross maybe isn't as critical of the elite as he should be, Miles is a grumpy ass, Lucile is inhibited by her own insecurities - but a lot of them do come across pretty poorly on the whole. Which maybe that makes sense, seeing how tense the story is, but it's hard to establish reasons to cheer on these characters when they're all Like That the whole time. Lionel is actually able to provide reasons. Also he's the first canonically gay character in a relationship in my writing, I'm pretty sure. Although, I don't know how explicitly it wound up getting written, as opposed to where I was planning to go with the story.

'Jollibee', the popular fast food restaurant chain in the Philippines has completed its renovations at North Road, National Highway, Brgy. Daro, Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental.

Thanks to the local government units (LGUs) and construction teams, everything is all set, and the community is looking forward to the re-opening on Wednesday morning, starting at 6am (Dumaguete local time) for the Breakfast menu. Exciting deals and promotions are on their way for the grand re-opening of 'Jollibee' in this city! Dumaguete City Mayor named 'Mr. Felipe Antonio Buscato Remollo' is set to end his final local term by next year in 2025, had yet to grace the first or second hour of the renovated fast-food branch but didn't muster the courage the following day at the time of our writing.

It was yesterday morning on Tuesday (November 26th at 11am), a very special milestone with an official blessing and ribbon-cutting ceremony. The newly renovated Jollibee fast food restaurant chain is absolutely stunning, almost like a cozy apartment! From ordering deliveries, dine-ins, pick-ups and take-outs; as well with delivery partners between Foodpanda and Grab, the Negrosanon residents and local visitors, in and outside of Dumaguete can now enjoy your favorite Jollibee meals, in the company of family and friends with a refreshed and modern dining atmosphere with a new touch screen order kiosks.

Earlier this morning, in an exclusive interview to OneNETnews, we spoke with the first unnamed female customer in Cebuano dialect about her excitement with the newly-renovated 'Jollibee North Road' and recommended the fast-food chain to others: "Nindot ang lugar, ganahan ko pud mo-Jollibee nang nianhe na po tanan para mag-mamahaw ta. Nahibal-an nimo nga ang Jollibee, usa ka kompanya sa fast-food busa, nasayod ang tanan nga lami ang Jollibee North Road", local female customer said at the 6am hour.

The event celebrated the 46th anniversary of the fast food restaurant, which opened its doors in our beautiful 'City of Gentle People' on Tuesday (September 16th, 2003). Before this. 'Mr. Tony Tan Caktiong', a Filipino-Chinese businessman, and his family opened the Magnolia Ice Cream parlor in Cubao, Quezon City, during the mid-70s. By the early 80s, Jollibee had expanded to 7 local branches in Metro Manila. Jollibee's very first franchised outlet was located on Ronquillo Street in 'Santa Cruz, Metro Manila, National Capital Region'. To date, as of February this year, it reaches its more than 1,151 branches spread across the Philippines, not including temporarily closures or international expansion areas like the ones in the New York state of the United States of America (U.S.A.).

Before 11 am, 'Eunice', who is a local cashier of the restaurant chain, saying that the renovation was done from August 9th until present today, to upgrade the new touch screen kiosk system for a better customer experience. While 'Annie', the manager at Jollibee North Road, highlighted the significance of the grand re-opening in serving the people of Dumaguete: "Marami kaming pinaglilingkuran sa ating branch area ng restaurant, parang halimbawa sa estudyante natin ng Negros Oriental State University, Silliman University, o kahit anong tirahan na eskwelahan o unibersidad sa Dumaguete. Kaya ayon, makatulong tayo to serve the people para sa Dumagueteños", Annie said.

Annie mentioned on our news team that the menu remains the same, but technology upgrades have been implemented to enhance service: "Wala naman po ma-change ang menu, mula sa nakaraan na store hanggang ngayon… Pareho po ang menu na pwede ino-offer natin for the newly re-opened store sa Dumaguete. Nakaroon po sir ang technology upgrade sir. Ngayon, nagpupunta sila dito para mabibili ng aming produkto sa Jollibee, pagtankilik sa ating serbisyo. Very thankful to sa lahat ng sumusuporta namin", she concluded. Annie also encouraged the Negrosanon communities to visit the newly re-opened Jollibee North Road, and expressed her gratitude to the loyal customers for their support. This considers to start new beginnings, delicious memories and a bright future ahead.

Many locals, in and out of residence in Dumaguete City, had a great time enjoying familiar favorites at the beloved fast-food chain. As Jollibee continues to expand and innovate, the grand re-opening in Dumaguete City serves as a testament to their commitment to serving communities and creating delightful dining experiences that truly embody their heartwarming new slogan "Share The Joy".

Looking Down From Garden Hill, Sham Shui Po Spreads Out From Us To Include Old Streets, Quiet Shophouses And Romantic “Tong Lau”s Which Mesmerize You With Its Old-world Charm

“Sunset is the opening music of the night”. In Hong Kong, the most photogenic moment of our Victoria Harbour is at sunset. One of the best angles to take such photos is from Garden Hill (嘉頓山) of a very old district Sham Shui Po (深水埗) which some call it “District of Sunset” as the old area is full of faded glories. But, every sunset brings the promise of a new dawn—Sham Shui Po is now being well gentrified! There are more and more trendy cafes near Ki Lung Street (基隆街) and the zone is often nicknamed as “The Brooklyn of Hong Kong”.

Sham Shui Po is situated in the northwestern part of the Kowloon Peninsula, adjacent to the deep-water Victoria Harbour. “Po” means the flat land with a pier. Sham Shui Po Pier, now sadly gone, can be traced back to 1924 or an earlier date. In the late Qing Dynasty several hundred years ago, one of the customs stations was built in Sham Shui Po.  It was usually the first stop for the boats coming from Pearl River (珠江) of the Mainland to the west of Hong Kong when they arrived here. Sham Shui Po thus became a busy marketplace with brisk business activities. Cottage industries such as footwear, clothing, household goods, herbal medicine, and many other trades flourished. These industries were usually housed in a 3-storey building with a covered verandah and the building is called “tong lau” (唐樓). Owners work in the ground floor shops and their families live upstairs. When several “tong lau”s are joined to each other, they form a long outdoor pedestrian porch with a cover. Hong Kong has a rainy climate in summer and the design of a tong lau can protect customers from getting wet in the street after shopping. Many such old shops still exist and some even have been in Sham Shui Po for over 70 years. Success comes to those who are busy with it. So, it is unfair to say everyone in Sham Shui Po is poor.

In 1955, a Han dynasty tomb was unearthed during the construction of a government housing estate in Sham Shui Po. The tomb comprises 4 chambers and there is an entrance passage in the shape of a symmetrical cross. It is known as the Lei Cheng Uk Han Tomb Museum (李鄭屋漢墓博物館). It sheds light on the history that about 2,000 years ago, Sham Shui Po was already inhabited by people who were rich enough to build such a fine tomb. Do take a look on a beautiful day!

Sham Shui Po is more charming than other districts in Kowloon combined. It will take you more than one day to fully explore this old district and see things that already vanish in other places. Let me give you an example.

Apliu Street (鴨寮街) is an olden and famous “flea market” street for electronic products inclusive of second-hand components, parallel imports, and discontinued models. Also, old vinyl records, cassette tapes, newspapers, magazines, and books can be found. “Apliu” literally means duck sheds because in the past, the area was a cluster of matsheds on the beach and partly over water where sheds were built. The street is now a shopping paradise for men especially homebodies. It is difficult to find such a fascinating nostalgic street in other area of Hong Kong.

Sham Shui Po is well known for its cramped quarters, high population density and caged homes. Dilapidated buildings are everywhere. Many live in bad condition. The district is old and the residents, many being workers in the factories of Sham Shui Po in the past, are facing economic threats when their physical health now declines. Other old people are attracted to the district since housing and basic necessities in Sham Shui Po are affordable for them.  An extreme imbalance between rich and poor in Hong Kong shows that our high degree of capitalism had to be wisely adjusted. Of course, poverty is not necessarily an enemy to happiness. Some live confidently there despite all the negative factors.

Sham Shui Po was the heart of Hong Kong’s textiles manufacturing industry in the 1960s. Now, these factories have gone but the district is still a popular market for designers and craftsmen to buy fashion materials which are in abundant supply. They include knitted fabrics, buttons, cotton cloths, needles and threads. These things are like a box of crayons that colour Sham Shui Po. The prominent streets are Nam Cheong Street (南昌街) and Yu Chau Street (汝州街).

In Hong Kong, snake soup (蛇羹) is considered a nutritious and expensive traditional dish. It is consumed in the cold months to make the body warm and strong. It may cure ailments such as arthritis. The well-known one is in Sham Shui Po and the restaurant is called “蛇王協” (Snake King Hip) in Apliu Street. Young people tend to dislike snake soup but you should try it before the gourmet food disappears in Hong Kong.

I want to salute Sham Shui Po with a passage in writing by the French photographer Chirstophe Agou: With every glance I take in the “negative-positive” of existence and the inevitability of impermanence to its glowing limits. Alone and haunted, I trust my inner eye, the heart. Everything, absolutely everything, becomes visible. Appearances, disappearances, nothing seems of secondary importance to me.

Sham Shui Po is nostalgically romantic.

Four suspects in police net over another missing four children in Abia

Abia State Police Command has said it arrested four suspects in connection with the missing four children, allegedly stolen by a yet-to-be-identified neighbour in Umuahia, the state capital. The latest incident is coming less than a month after all four children of the same parents were stolen by a tricycle operator, engaged to convey them to school. In the latest incident, which occurred over the weekend, two of the stolen children are siblings, one their cousin, while the other is from another parent. They were said to have been stolen by a tenant, who just moved into their compound located at Ubakala Street by Ossah Road Umuahia. According to sources, the said neighbour, who has no traceable Identity, only packed in the compound on Thursday and spent two days in the apartment before bolting away with the innocent children. She was said to have given them a treat under the pretext of being a good neighbour before disappearing. Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, ASP, Maureen Chinaka, said the incident had been reported to the Central Police Station Umuahia. According to the PPRO, the matter was reported by one Mrs Ifeanyi Uduma Ibe. Police said Mrs Ibe had told the police that she left four children to the care of a neighbour at Ubakala Street by Ossah Road before she came back from a brief errand, and she had disappeared with all four children. The PPRO, who described the incident as unfortunate, said the Police had launched an investigation into the matter. A release by the PPRO said: “On the 17th of December 2023, at about 0900 Hrs, Mrs Ifeanyi Udoma Ibe, a resident of Ubakala Street by Ossai Road, Umuahia, reported to the Central Police Station (CPS) Umuahia that she entrusted four children to the care of a new female tenant, including two of hers and her neighbours, namely: Joy Uduma (female, three years old). Ogbonna Uduma (male, six years old). Chioma Kingsley (female, five years old). Miracle Ikechukwu (female, five years old). “Police interaction with Mrs Ibe revealed that the tenant had moved in just three days before the incident and Mrs Ibe could not provide details such as the tenant’s name or GSM number.“ Meanwhile, the landlord of the said house, Mr Uche Akachukwu, denied any knowledge that the said tenant packed in. The landlord claimed he gave the agent the key to show her the room on Thursday, so she would come to sign the papers with the lawyer, only to be told that a tenant had absconded with four children.  According to the landlord, he only knew about it when one of the tenants, Mrs Ibe, called him to ask for the contact of the new tenant.  The landlord explained that he was surprised because he did not expect the tenant to pack in before completing the document-signing formality. Meanwhile, efforts to trace the escapee tenant possibly by her bank account became fruitless, as the landlord said, she transferred her house rent via Pont of Sale, POS. He claimed that when he demanded her to identify, the agent had dismissed it as unnecessary. Police have vowed to apprehend the said run-away tenant and her accomplices. Read the full article
