that’s p much it in a nutshell tbh. it’s a combo of pippa being selfish and terrified of being alone ( she’s not a whole person without ned ), and knowing that ned is so good and deserves life when he’s never really had the chance to live one and that the world is a better place with him in it. and at first she can ignore the feeling --- she doesn’t really know what it is, and so many things are uncomfortable in life --- but as time goes on, she knows. she knows, and she doesn’t care, bc at the end of the day no matter how much she genuinely wants to do good, she’ll put ned and herself first, and if their interests don’t align w the Right Thing then pippa is going to change what the Right Thing is so that they do. ( nobody who was supposed to care abt her and what she wanted out of life did, ned is the only person who’s ever given that any mind, and so of course pippa’s going to save him, of course she’s going to stand up for herself, bc nobody else will. ) 

and she travels so much that she doesn’t really feel a part of the universe? not in a tangible way; she’s not got a home or a place that is really hers, there’s no world that she can really lay claim to, except for at ned’s side. that’s all she has.

pippa in her mag.icians verse is a natural-born time magician who’s also a traveller, so she can travel in time as well as between worlds. she can also sense timeline loops and stuff like the wrongness of penny-23 in timeline 40. she’s still from the early 19th century, and her father is someone very high up in the order. pippa discovered her abilities when she just disappeared from a conversation about a betrothal, and found herself several miles away from home, and she was probably trained by magician governesses/tutors ( but only to a limited degree bc a woman? do anything w magic except use it to keep a household running? unthinkable; she kinda had to become a hedge witch to learn anything useful ). 

so anyway, she time travels which is how she ends up meeting The Gang ( probably via bumping into penny several times but in the wrong order ), and she discovers new worlds by wandering the neitherlands and looking at all the fountains. she loves fillory and probably hides there for a while after ned dies before trying to find out where he’s ended up. she’s probably wanted by the order in her own time bc her father has that kind of power, but time travel isn’t exactly a common discipline so it keeps her safe enough.

she’s not easy to work with ( unless ur ned ), but she’s extremely intelligent, fierce, genuinely wants to do good even if she does it in her own chaotic fuck-the-rules way, and like...time travel could be really useful for The Gang but good luck convincing her not to just zap off for the info on her own w/o a passenger.
