Now I really do hope it's at least two more years before we buy a battery-electric car
Last week, we won a weird old-car-ownership lottery by having the hybrid battery of our Toyota Prius fail–after about 17 and a half years and just over 126,000 miles. That more than doubled the eight years covered by Toyota’s warranty and comfortably exceeded the warranty’s alternate minimum of 100,000 miles, a threshold we crossed in February of 2018. Back when we bought this then-cutting-edge…

Getting rid of a 2012 Prius via /r/cars
Getting rid of a 2012 Prius
I've got a 2012 Prius with 200k miles on it and it just came up with the dreaded P0A80 code meaning the hybrid battery has a problem. I have it in a shop right now for diagnostics to make sure it's not a cheap fix, but it's most likely going to be a $3200 repair. That combined with a rear bumper cover that's a $600 repair means this car has probably reached the end of the road.
I just checked Craigslist and I put the value if both problems were fixed around $4500. So the residual value of the car is about $700. I'm not entirely opposed to getting it repaired, but I kinda hate the car anyways and it seems silly dumping 85% of it's value into repairs. It currently runs so I can drive it to wherever it needs to get sold.
So what's the best way to get money for this car? Sell it to a junkyard? Just list it on Craigslist as-is? Is there anything I should be doing so that some unscrupulous person doesn't buy it, swap the one battery cell and then try to resell it?
The state is California if there are registration/transfer concerns.
