My recap/review of På Holmen - Episode 1
I invite everyone to discuss the first episode with me, either here, or on facebook in Ylvis- a group.
Tumblr media
Here's my chronological recap/review of the first episode of 'Ylvis På Holmen med Calle og Magnus'
Episode 1
Why the mixed up chair cushions??
Will every host challenge another person for singing a verse of the intro song?
Bård and Calle were consistent with the intro clothes, Vegard and Magnus weren’t
Song font Arial  Rounded Bold. Really guys?!? What happened to music video subtitles Helvetica?
Vegard and Bård are still the most enthusiatic singers of the group- Vegard still uses his slightly awkward wave
Bård rightfully doubting his brother‘s generosity with the drink, and drinking most of it anyway
Also Bård knowing Vegard will not only make them drink something disgusting but will find a way to incorporate a joke based on the name (they love their rhyming humour)
Bård instantly getting back into hosting mode and asking if the audience knows what’s going on
The ‘growing up in Africa’ question is the perfect call out to every repetitive intertview they ever did
And the fact that Bård actually starts to answer that question in a way tells me they gave up on denying people those questions
The interview with Maria Mena isn’t a bad skit but I fear the joke will wear out quickly when they repeat the concept in following episodes- But there is also quite a serious approach to it in my opinion: People being curious about a celebrity’s life but then again also the stigma some celebrities have to endure when living through something traumatic and that people rather try to drown out such news, like the train noise drowns out her answer in that interview
The Ravioli making segment felt pretty weak, but some things might be funnier on paper- But Bård assisting Gino and giving him the rolling pin without even being asked for it was sweet and considerate
Preparing dinner for a date with mini-excavators was probably funnier for them to film than for us to watch. Despite destroying things in an overly ridiculous fun way, this doesn’t come near the asthetic and concept that was Payback.
Them dissing comedian talent shows and then learning that Magnus applied for one and didn’t even make it on TV, is golden.
Latterkongen’s best moments are not the contestants and their jokes but jury panel laughing.
Reference to the wardrobe that leads to Narnia?
The jester-like outfit is half the battle.
The accordion bit is something I loved for personal reasons. But to me it felt a bit forced to sell the audience that Magnus was part of that group back then as well. That joke was lost on me.
Magnus calling Vegard ‚Bård‘. I thought we were past that.
'Garden‘ is a good segment as a concept but the editing of it was not to my liking. Some rules were presented in the middle of the segment so they started one challenge and then it was suddenly interrupted by an explanation how the next weeks will progress with several tasks. Another challenge starts without going back to the first one. This whole thing would be more enjoyable for me if it showed some editing consistency, but overall could be one of the better segments due to the variety of contestents.
I am a fan of their outfits though. Reminds me of 'Hyss i Småland'
Also loved Bård asking what the prize is.
They don’t fool me. They try the ravioli and wave goodbye and in the next cut Magnus and Bård changed seats. The brothers still stick together in the end I guess.

My recap/review of På Holmen - Episode 3
Ylvis are back for more, this time with Magnus in charge. And like before I invite everyone to discuss the third episode with me, either here, or on facebook in Ylvis- a group.
Tumblr media
Here’s my chronological recap/review of the third episode of ‘Ylvis På Holmen med Calle og Magnus’
Episode 3
Magnus doing a good job at teasing what’s coming in his episode
the lengths they went for with shooting the boat intro is very much appreaciated
they could’ve gone the easy way and just film all arriving in one boat but they reshot it several times, gotta love perfectionists (hence the adding slurping sound for Calle eating ice cream?)
look whose entering a Chris Evans Knives Out look-alike contest with the beige knitted sweater combo. This look might replace my previous favourite beige look of his which was on the Tørnquist show
Is Calle wearing Bård’s pants from episode 2? Is Bård wearing Vegard’s pants from episode 2??
Magnus seems more at ease already although being the host. Maybe because this time he has control? I would guess that he might not be able to read the rest as well as they do each other which makes all the spontaneous impro parts harder for him I supppose. I am already pleaseantly surprised
I might not have liked that he replaced the verse singing for the summer tree poem but I am glad he went with what he most likely felt more comfortable with
I could write so much about Bård just casually sitting in his chair and looking way too good but I’ll restrain myself from doing that in this recap
the question about the difference between Magnus and the other three was so vague that I didn’t know if the outcome would be funny. I was wrong, it was
Magnus naming the one thing that at least Ylvis pretty much avoids at all costs (irony alert)
Calle’s face looking like he’s questioning his own fee when hearing how much they get
‘Hva er prisen’ reminds me of ‘The Price Is Right’ and could’ve been a real funny segment. But sadly (entertainment-wise) it seems that a norwegian celebrity isn’t as removed from the normal people as in other countries
but the whole skit was still enjoyable enough to watch because they are too competitive to not make it fun
can someone please explain to me why Bård says ‘Chicago’ when him and Calle have the same amount? Is that another sort of loan word colloquial term like ‘Texas’ that Norwegians use?
Bård saying that he tries to raise his children poor. In a way I believe him. I think him to be the strictest parents out of all three.
the best thing about Latterkongen for me is still the jury losing it rather than the contestants competing for the title
if Ylvis would update their merchandise shop it should include that royal plastic sausage that gets used a lot
the fact that the puppet is called Calle is very irritating
that poor person who had to clean the ice cream machine after making those lunch flavours.
I enjoyed that guessing segment very much. It also meant another competitive live situation which are always the best
also I was curious myself as to how those ice cream flavours would taste, even knowing what’s in it
Bård being impatient with Vegard is funny in a way, since he probably knows that otherwise he starts to get into explaining mode. He already did that a bit at the beginning of tasting his flavour of ice cream. Vegard can’t help himself but giving extra commentary to everything.
Bård doing little victory dances. He’s a five year old in a 38 year old man’s body.
and right after biting into a lemon to lose the taste of the ice cream.
I didn’t get that gospel poem thing Magnus did but since it was only a tiny part of the whole episode, it didn’t really dampen the mood too much
I loved that Magnus brought up the Ellen interview
I would have loved to hear a statement but I guess that’s not funny enough for that fomat
but the bit that Magnus did with them because of it was pure genius and I would’ve have predicted a whole other outcome
the psychologist interview at Concorde. Thank you Magnus for once again giving us an inside look to the office space
shout out to the camera man for giving me a beautiful shot of Bård’s backside hair
I get that the way they have worked together or that long and that interview being taken at their office that the rational side in them is bigger than the emotional one
I agree with Bård, I would’ve though him to score highest as well (you’re still my favourite though) and the bit with Magnus in question to be punished in the previous episode made me believe that even more
Bård being surprised by his own result and immediately trying to excuse it with a ‘cake-sending’reply. Looks like he wants to keep the little shit title more than he cares to admit
Vegard’s remark about cheating the test was really good. Kudos for that.
I wonder if Bård’s rain dance stems from his time in Africa
Aleksander not understanding what the farm instructor says is very relatable to all foreign language learning fans
I don’t think I ever imagined the words birds and brothel to be in one sentence, but they did have a point
what’s with Calle always hurting himself while cutting things. First at the race car challenge and now here. He is a health risk for sure
Bård slightly questioning how masculine he appears when sewing something while Aleksander is sawing without his shirt on has to be one of the funniest revelations on that whole Garden segment
Bård being worried about having a stiff one in his back and Svein comforting him that this won’t be before morning. They really don’t have any filters when talking and it‘s half the fun of that whole Garden thing
the hen is called Kinder! Kinder!! She laid KINDER Eggs!!! How did I miss that joke the first time around?!
and suddenly all turned into sour losers and are throwing the pieces into the fire
I want to know who threw the bucket
the ending of that episode with the aftermatch talk is something we saw in a similar way on IKMY but it was fun either way
the boys clearly rather portraying another persona than themselves
I didn’t have any expectations for this episode but I was truly pleasantly surprised by the ideas that Magnus had for his time hosting

My recap/review of På Holmen - Episode 2
I am a bit late with this one but once again, I invite everyone to discuss the second episode with me, either here, or on facebook in Ylvis- a group.
Tumblr media
Here’s my chronological recap/review of the second episode of ‘Ylvis På Holmen med Calle og Magnus’
Episode 2
Do I have to believe Bård that he is drinking white wine when we know that they tried to sell us Pepsi Maxx as red wine on the boat intro?
Dad jokester moves when talking about the fighter
Gotta love a fake showbiz smile, he does it so well
The intro really does give me a summer feeling; and also the idea of these four guys being part of a bad reality-show-like sitcom
I love the enthusiam with which especially Vegard and Bård sing the Holmen song
Calle being put on the spot with impro songs is fun to watch since one never knows how good or bad he is at it at that exact moment. The national anthem impro is a surprise I expected rather from Vegard than Bård; shows how much they share a brain after all
And genius to send Magnus and Calle really away directly at the beginning. I would imagine that Vegard is used to a lot of things when it comes to working with Bård, but that he really sends them away and the guys not knowing why, must have thrown everyone out of their game for a second.
Bård’s intro about Vegard is done so hilariously serious apart from the ‚charming seniors‘ joke which is very likely true as well though
And Bård will never let him live for singing in that Spirit movie
Confused Vegard is always cute
This whole beginning of the interview is taking a piss at all interviews where people ask them about their brotherly relationship.
I repeat: Confused Vegard is always cute
The irony of Bård knowing his brother so well that he knows how to get him with a comical bit that is all about him
Good for Vegard that Norway thinks he is funny but my favourite adjective on the board had to be „treffsikker“. I still laugh at the promo clip where he has to throw at the cans
The statistics were fascinating; but the concept of Vegard without Bård does sound weirder to me than Bård without Vegard. We saw them individually as guests on Brille before but I think together they’re still at their best
Vegard being proud of the fact that more men want to have sex with him than women, reminded me of a certain Senkveld interview moment.
The whole show seemingly being about Vegard is such a great joke in itself and actually shows whose names still pull in viewers and are the main title of the show
The grocery shopping bit was so fun to watch. Not only because of Vegard cluelessly wandering around the shop but also very much because of his brother finding great delight in his big brother’s struggles. The brothers challenging each other is often the greatest thing to watch. Sometimes more than a task itself.
The fact that Vegard had strapped a gopro camera to his chest but none of that footage was used, shows they know what we want to see. Not only the task itself but the struggle and the reaction of his brother towards the struggle
Vegard always in explaining mode and trying to identify what he is holding in his hands, trying but not always succeeding
Bård’s joke challenge must have been gruesome for the three, maybe worst for Vegard and Calle who are probably more used to not only write but already brainstorm as a team. But Magnus did have a point with his oven remark. Magnus seemed also the most relaxed at taking this task which I didn’t expect. He was actually entertaining a non-present audience while the other two looked and acted more panicky.
There’s still the wax seal stamp on Vegard’s envelope which tells us his envelope got closed last
The brick background to imitate an open mic night pub setting is a nice touch
Vegard’s joke of course had a nerd factor to it. Did I find it funny? No.
Greven av grønt reminds me of ‘Oppgave med straff’ from o-fag times
It’s fun that the questions actually teach the audience some info
Bård being struck to the ground and calling for Mama was kinda sweet, in a very painful way
Knowing how much Vegard got affected by that kick and the whole aftermath of it makes it harder to watch, despite Bård’s glee
Teasing Magnus that he might be punished for winning that game was hilarious to watch.
If anything showed that they might have worked long with Magnus but that the other three are longer friends, then it was this bit.
Bård giving etymology for the word ‘hematoma’ gave me o-fag ‘ibux’ flashbacks
Emil Meek actually answering Magnus’ impro question wasn’t the plan but Bård being a seasoned host, knew how to not only change to the original plan but how to do it elegantly
As a fan it disturbed me that Emil Meek had to put on Bård’s costume to sing Vegard’s part
Side note: I am fascinated by the lighting changes throughout the show
The dentasticks in the glasses were a nice touch when serving the meal
I still don’t understand how they edit that Garden segment.
I loved that some got very into the actual design part of the recreation of the coat of arms and putting aside the fact that it’s made out of feces
I agree with the boys‘ anger about the golden bucket. I didn’t agree with Linda getting it and I also didn’t agree with Siri’s reasoning for it
But Bård could sometimes use a filter before speaking up, he’s relentless
Vegard taking Siri’s and Linda’s side surprised me, and more so that he sounds like he means it
Calle starting a women vs. men discussion and Vegard not wanting to get into it was another thing I didn’t see coming and I wonder how much of that got cut
Ever so often the Ylvis brothers disagree on a huge level and I have to admit it’s entertaining to watch
Vegard looking like the scottish Scrooge McDuck with that hat is adorable
And instantly followed by little shit brother Bård bonding with Aleksander over his wish that Vegard will lose every game
Bård losing the golf game must have hurt but I guess if he has to give the win to somebody, I would think he's glad that it’s Calle
At the end Bård forcing an impro song on Vegard and Vegard panicking and making it sound like an angry fake italian version of the Las Ketchup song. I know he can do better than that.
But all in all a very good second episode after a mixed start with the first episode.

My recap/review of På Holmen - Episode 4
Revenge of the Sidekick. Calle is the last one to steer the show and take command of his fellow mates. I invite everyone to discuss the fourth episode with me, either here, or on facebook in Ylvis- a group.
Here’s my chronological recap/review of the fourth episode of ‘Ylvis På Holmen med Calle og Magnus’
Tumblr media
Episode 4
I have to apologize to all Calle fans beforehand. I might have been a bit biased from the start since I never really could warm up to Calle’s humour and turns out I still don’t really get it. I tried my best to approach his show with an open mind, even more so since Magnus proved me wrong with his show, but I fear this recap might be a bit judgemental.
- Calle playing an instrument is an unexpected but good start
- ‘music related show’ doesn’t sound bad at all considering how music heavy Stories from Norway is and how good Ylvis are with music related stuff in general
- „let’s make a summer show, they said. It’ll be fun, they said. Let’s shoot it in late fall. Let’s wear the warmest and cosiest sweaters we have. Why not add a thick scarf.“ The dichotomy of all this is a joke already
- Calle randomly grabbing a microphone and starting to sing? Is this Calle’s minutt 2.0?
- was this an impro song challenge? Is it a known song? It looked like they checked cue cards. But Vegard’s short refusal was fun to watch
- Second instrument for Calle. He is really trying to showcase himself most in this, isn’t he. What started fun, is kinda irritating to me at this point already
- I am glad the other guys seem to enjoy it very much though, that is nice to watch.
- Bård saying out loud that Calle’s task was a shitty task to give, is so on brand for him. Tv? Audience? Doesn’t matter. If he disagrees he’ll say it.
- 5 minutes in and Calle get’s backlash from his own friends. Already very dividing episode, apparently not only for me as a viewer but also Bård as a ‚contestant‘
- Greven av grønt slowly turns into my favourite reoccuring segment
- I begrudgingly admit that the brothers’ glee over each other’s pain is very entertaining
- the fact that Bård and Vegard are often seen most laughing at stuff Calle does, isn’t always understandable for me but it’s joyful to watch since I don’t think a lot makes them laugh like that
- was Magnus choice a trick question? Is that Kålrot in that bowl but Kålrabi was the right answer? Was this a challenge like when you have to say the colour something is written in but not the colour that the letters say? I am confused. I can’t decide if Magnus was just a sore loser or if they made it extra difficult for him by switching answer and displayed item. And no, it’s not the same fo me.
- even after getting the punishment he still insists on it being the same. I know someone who probably did a google research after this, trying to prove his point. I feel a bit bad for him since it really looks like a trap he ran into.
- Calle having to laugh when he gets the cue cards for the characters is sweet. Even with a short written introduction the others can already make him laugh/smile.
- Vegard’s story mostly works with a dialect and his setup; the pun (if I understood it right) not too much. I would say that Vegard is an overthinking comedian, whereas Bård seems to be more on-the-spot. That’s why I think they complement each other so perfectly.
- Vegard still continuing in character steals some fire from Magnus even before he sat down. A bit unfortunate for the focus of the segment.
- Chicago announcing that he is easy to fool is something the audience should rather experience through his story. The fact that he mentions it twice before even starting the story is a bit too self-aware for someone who claims to be easily fooled.
- Magnus story could have been better if better told. Like I said, too much self-awareness
- Bård crashing the scene. What’s new. He uses the element of surprise for his entry
- Vegard did it again. His antics overshadowing Bård’s PMS,SMS joke. It begins to be annoying. Using blindness as the ongoing joke wasn’t that funny. Especially when it meant that it disrupts the other people’s performances.
- self-drawn TV Norge patch is a nice touch.
- Bård’s jokes before he even begins his story are already more fun for me than the other one’s stories.
- Bård’s actual story…… how did he pass the psychopath test?!  Good thing he has golf as an outlet. Yes, I know he made up a character but his story sounds like he was exposed to too much self-insert fanfiction.
- Interrupting them singing with a commercial break: just rude.
- introducing someone with the help of his shoe? Which is unrelated to why the guest is there? Misleading and irritating but that’s probably also the fun of it.
- Was Calle’s Streken imitation good? Yes. (Although it also reminded me a bit of the Pingu Sketch from Ylvis III.)
- but within less than 23 minutes of the show Calle made it several times about himself and not so much about challenging the others. I didn’t see that as much when the others where hosting and I personally prefer the previous hosts for that.
- maybe it’s the sidekick revenge
- Vegard not managing one simple word when starting his imitation and sounding like a stereotype caveman. At least he can laugh about his own failure
- every task Calle calls them in the same order: Vegard, Magnus, Bård. A bit repetitive. Switching it up would’ve done the episode some good
- the painting: Picasso meets Aladdin’s (very tired) Genie?
- I think we all know Vegard can do better than that, but a fair attempt
- Kudos to Magnus. Competing against Ylvis in a musical contest. And he did good.
- Thank you camera man for the close-up of Bård’s hand
- Sooo, half of the episode is dedicated to the three not being so good at imitations and then Bård’s performance is a revival of his Sondre imitation sketch just with another artist but similar antics?
- Sorry, Bård, you’re still my favourite but to me the winner of this competition was Magnus. In comparison to the others he delivered a fair imitation. Bård bent the rules and was then rewarded for it. If the challenge would’ve asked for another setup, I might have granted him the win but not this way.
- Slapstick Calle putting his performance first again with the thinking staredown. It went for too long.
- Garden commentary already starting wild with mentioning Aleksander and Bård had sex
- so many brilliant things to unravel
- Bård wanting to switch Vegard for Aleksander as a brother because he is less mansplaining nerdy
- Aleksander saying Bård is smarter than he thought, Bård embracing Aleksander’s lack of knowledge as a positive thing, the complimenting battle between those two was a highlight of this episode
- Vegard thinking about if he ever made a bird brothel before...this man is a delight. That he took a moment to question if he did before is testament to the fact how many weird things the brothers have already done in their life
- Bård’s right. Aleksander is excellent at cheering his teammates on
- No comment from me on Linda giving the bucket to Siri...but I am looking forward to one of the guys being in charge. So far I don’t see the point in those specially appointed people since they don’t seem to have any input or main role for the tasks. I see it only as a thing that exists to stir up drama.
- having tried to shoot with bow and arrow before, I can say that it was harder for me than it looks and I was impressed how good most of them were
- but either Magnus didn’t see Kongen Befaler or he ignored the tears task from that show because he should have known then that Siri will probably react much worse to it then Bård.
- this is the second time where Bård knowingly could’ve had an advantage; first at golf, and second because of not being affected by onions
- Mansplaining Vegard is at it again
- I loved the end joke with Bård but in a way they had both the right and wrong person for this. Right because he, most likely, is the last to stress about when it’s his turn. Wrong because he is probably too relaxed to care about how long it takes. My guess is that he might have fallen asleep before he even got suspicious.
