Tokyo Rose: 1969 Honda CB750 drag bike restored by Karl Ardo (@zerobalancer) and Josh Winderman (@thedayolds) for @bornfreeshow 13. Found after hanging in a NJ barn for 40 years, the Tokyo Rose was originally built by the late, great Todd Schuster — a master fabricator who gained national recognition in the early days of AMA Superbike racing with Butler & Smith BMW and American Honda, building race bikes for the likes of Reg Pridmore, Freddie Spencer, and other legends. Says long-time friend Skip Vezzetti: “Todd was more than a mechanic or fabricator; he was an artist. You can’t speak about or think of Todd without smiling. He’ll be missed by all his friends.” When Karl and Josh realized whose drag bike they had, they set out to restore it to its former glory, working from old magazine features and photos provided courtesy of Todd’s nephew, Reggie. “This was not our build, this was saving a piece of drag racing history.” The donor engine is from a 1976 CB750F, utilizing the original cylinders from Todd’s bike with new 900cc sleeves and 10.5-1 pistons. The ’76 head was modified to handle a Web high-performance racing cam, electronic ignition, and pair of Weber 45 carbs with a trick aluminum manifold. The Tokyo Rose weighs 330 pounds and makes 115 horsepower — Karl says it’s a thrill to ride: “I’ve owned a 700 hp ’32 Ford, so I’m ok with speed, and this bike is Scary Fast!!!” BF-13 Photos: Tony Colombini of @blacktopmagazine. Daily Golden Era Touring Car Learnings from @lesfilsdegruppen. 🏁 In 1993, the Japanese Touring Car Championship was in a deep crisis. The top two classes had been monopolized by two extremely dominant cars: the BMW M3 and the Nissan Skyline GTR. The only real competition between manufacturers was in the baby class, under 1600cc. Group A was evidently not the way forward. In 1990 the British had faced the same problem, and so introduced a 2 litre formula somewhat based in Group A regs. The experiment proved extremely successful, and the FIA quickly adopted these regulations as their own. So the Japanese Automobile Federation chose those regulations, now known as Class II, to run their domestic touring car championship from 1994 onwards. This of course meant that some Japanese manufacturers didn't have access to pre existing Class II cars, as did BMW or Alfa Romeo for example. So the old Group A cars were needed to provide a base to start with the development of the new ones. Honda had been successfully campaigning their various generations of Civics in Group A, and so it was obvious that the latest EG chassis should be able to race there. However, new size and door count minimums meant that only the Civic Ferio saloon was eligible. It proved relatively uncompetitive, never really being a contender for the championship. A new school of thought was needed, and a new car had to be built, to abandon the old Group A reasoning in favour of something more extreme. The 2.0 litre engine used was based on a stroked Integra B18C, which didn't really help top end power or high-revving abilities, and was ditched in favour of a short-stroke H22A Prelude based design. Trouble was, it didn't really fit into the Civic! Enter the Domani pictured here. The Domani was an upmarket version of the Civic, and was known in Europe as the Civic 5 door, and as the Rover 400! Apparently the car had a bigger engine compartment and so it was studied as a replacement for the Ferio. Note the 1995-style aero on the car! Ultimately Ron Tauranac from Reynard fame was brought in as a consultant and ended up designing the JTCC Accord, which was different to the European one. The #HondaCivic has had almost as many regenerations as Doctor Who and the first one is quite distant now - but it’s the car that put Honda on the global map. The company was already famous for Motorcycles when it began building cars in 1963 (the TN360 truck and S500 roadster) and it rose quickly. By 1969 it was building 200K cars a year. But before the Civic only one of them - the unsuccessful 1300/145 - had been a mainstream car. The lessons learned from that painful experience shaped the creation of Honda’s next cars - the Z, Life, and Civic. When the Civic arrived in July of 1972, it combined all of Honda’s experience into a package that played well outside of Japan. The 1300 had been Soichiro Honda’s intended flagship - a 1.3L family car aimed at the big sellers - Nissan’s Bluebird and the Toyota Corona. Honda was a brilliant engineer, but insisted this ambitious project be air-cooled and use all manner of complex engineering solutions (like a dry-sump oil system) that made it expensive to build and service. He overruled his engineers on many choices, and the 1300 ended up a pricey marketplace dud. For the next car, he trusted the recommendations of his top deputies, like R&D man Hideo Sugiura. Everything about the original Civic was an extension of Honda’s experiences with the N360/N600, just on a larger scale. By American standards it was modest - just 1,169-cc and only available as a 2-door, either a handy hatch or a 2-door sedan with the same 140” (355cm) long shell. Like the N and Z before it, the Civic’s strength was economy - 40mpg, but Honda’s engineers also gave it an excellent suspension and a sporty feel for something so basic, and it was generally very well made. The engine was punched up to 1,237-cc in 1973 and a 1,488-cc “CVCC” (“Compound Vortex Controlled Combustion”) version appeared for ‘75. It used a specially chambered head design with a tiny extra inlet valve and the plug housed in a subchamber, allowing the Civic to meet emissions regs without a catalytic converter. The first Civic was a hit within months - the first year of the Civic saw U.S. Honda sales nearly double - to 38,000. Driving headcanon

He drives like a FUCKING MANIAC. A Honda Jazz should not be hurtling down country lanes in Hertfordshire at 70 mph, in low lighting with a bit of mist. That is how he drives. This worries Mrs (or should I say, Lady) Bennet to such an extent that she insisted on teaching their daughters how to drive. She drives like a frightened granny, and spent the entire time telling her daughters to slow down when they were already going 10 below the speed limit, and bracing herself against the dashboard.

Reg learned how to drive in the ‘70s, where seatbelts weren’t really a thing, and speed limits were more suggestions than anything to be taken seriously, and it shows.

Nickname headcanon

There’s not much that you can do with a name like Reginald. He’s ‘Reg’ to the old squires down at the local pub or bowls club, but professionally, he’s Lord Bennet. Only his wife calls him Reggie, generally before giving him a peck on the lips.

Singing headcanon

He can sing along to all of the Red Army Choir’s greatest hits in flawless Russian. Whether this is the result of his ‘diplomacy’ work during the cold war (he was almost definitely a spy, but there’s no concrete evidence because the record was heavily redacted once the wall fell), or the fact that he’s just a bit of a commie, nobody knows. Every so often when he and Lady Bennet are at home, and all of their girls are elsewhere, he’ll put on a Sinatra record and dance in the sitting room with his wife as he croons the lyrics into her ear. She’ll blush. That’s where her daughters got their unfortunate propensity to blush at the slightest provocation.

Soft spot headcanon

His soft spot is his wife. You can’t stay married to someone that highly strung and fretful, through five daughters, if you’re not willing and able to let a hell of a lot slide. He was head over heels in love with her from the moment he saw her, she supported their young family when he was just some upstart young backbencher earning about a third of pittance, and he’s still head over heels in love with her now, even when she’s having conniptions about the fact that she thinks that Mary’s probably a lesbian and has told everyone except for her, and why wouldn’t her daughter trust her with something like that, oh her daughters hate her etc. etc. etc.

Favourite posession headcanon

For reasons which officially he isn’t allowed to talk about, Lord Bennet was in Berlin when the wall fell. He has a few pieces of wall about the size of a fist with bits of the painting visible. They’re displayed on a shelf in his study at home.

Favourite photograph headcanon

Him and his wife, holding baby Jane, in front of their house when they brought her home for the first time. They’re so young and happy, and Jane was the only baby who was ever well behaved enough to stay still for a photograph, so every other photo of them with a new daughter (because they took a photo every time they brought home a new one from the hospital) has a fussy blur in one of their arms rather than an immediately recognisable baby. He loves all of the photos, and they line the edge of his desk, but he has a soft spot for the one of little Janey.
