#Overprotective Ozai!

I haven’t watched it in a while but Zuko and Toph actually should’ve had the life-changing field trip because I really needed her to find out that his biggest problem is a father that demanded his children be the best benders around and kind of envy that, and then I needed him to find out that her biggest problem is parents that believed her to be helpless and wanted to love and protect her anyway and just totally flip out.
#I always felt bad for them. If I found out that my 12-year-old (blind or not) was living a dangerous double life I would also lose my mind#We didn’t really get to see them at their best#They kind of had the “okay you’re grounded FOREVER” moment that a lot of parents would have under those circumstances#and then she hit the road before the knowledge could sink in#I mean I’m sure she had reason to think that they’d still be overprotective if they knew how self-sufficient she was#but that theory was never actually tested#It doesn’t bug me the show’s about dumb kids acting like dumb kids so of course she takes it for granted they’ll never get her and runs off#with people who do#but then you have a whole adult audience watching it and acting like they’re as bad as Ozai pardon me what#Anyway. Missed opportunity! HUGE

Dark Platonic! Fire Nation Royal Family x Non-bender Reader

Part 2
With Ozai:
At first he didn't accept the fact that you, his youngest child, is a non-bender, and ignored your existence.
That was until he noticed how his older brother, Iroh, spends time with you, Ozai got extremely jealous.
And decided to spend time with you, only to realize that you are his favorite child, and felt like an actual father.
Yes, you can't firebend nor do you even have the ability to protect yourself.
But why would you need to protect yourself when your father is going to be the Phoenix king of the fire nation?
Ozai will burn down the world for you.
"You, my sweet child, will grow up in the presence of a very powerful father"
With Ursa:
When Ursa found out that you couldn't bend, she became overprotective of you to the point of paranoia.
Since childhood, she refused to allow you to play with anyone except Zuko.
One time, one of her handmaidens scolded you harshly for playing outside without your mother's permission which resulted in you bursting into tears.
The next day, that handmaiden was fired and Ursa made sure that she gets no other jobs.
While thinking of escaping, she thought to take you with her.
However, Ozai has forbidden that from happening.
"When you find out the truth, promise to come find me"
With Azulon
While still alive, he made sure you had the best education and guards.
Azulon also made sure to have you believe that the fire nation is without mistakes or faults.
He tried manipulating you into believing that just your loyalty to your people is enough duty.
However, you are kind, too kind.
Yet, he Azulon didn't hate you for it even if he considered a weak trait to have in the royal family.
He also still has the flower crown you made him stored away safely so it doesn't rot.
It is rumored that the last word he muttered was your name.
With Iroh
Uncle Iroh isn't really as possessive as the other characters, but he focuses on advising you from time to time.
You enjoy drinking tea with him and gossiping about everything.
Even though, Ozai has forbidden him from speaking with you, you would sneak behind your father's back to drink tea with him.
After the loss of his son in the war, Lu Ten, Iroh felt depressed.
Yet you managed to comfort him with your cheerfulness and playful attitude.
It reminded him of his son.
"The best quality in a princess is her kindness, something which your sister clearly lacks"
With Zuko
Zuko thought you would be like Azula but you have proven him wrong.
You are kind, gentle, and nurturing just like your and his mother.
That's why Zuko always found himself by your side, being your playmate...being your protecter.
His mother told him that it's his duty to protect you from danger considering that he is your older brother.
Even though Azula has never hurt you, but Zuko was always wary of her, especially after his mother disappeared.
When Ozai challenged him to an Agni Kai, you were the first to cry out and plead with him to let Zuko off, but Ozai felt jealous of your relationship with Zuko and was determined to teach his son a lesson.
However when your brother got banished, Zuko took you with him in secret not wanting you to be left with Azula.
"I know the journey will take long but once I restore my honor we can return home together"
With Azula
Azula was extremely jealous when you were born, thinking that you will take all the attention from her.
But she realized that you deserve all the attention.
You didn't treat her like a monster, you weren't scared of her.
Instead you showed her love and called her 'big sister'
You would cling to her as a toddler, whenever there was lightning, you would secretly sneak to her room and sleep beside her.
"How can you be scared of lightning, we control it, silly"
Mai and Ty Lee saw how Azula softens whenever you are around.
And when Azula discovered that you have left with Zuko, she destroyed everything in her way and burned a few servants.
"She's mine, and only MINE"

Zuko
• Zuko is such a good boyfriend!!!
• Or atleast, he tries to be.
• Communication doesn’t come easy to him, but he’ll try his hardest for you!
• He’s really insecure, and gets afraid you’re going to up and leave.
(just like his momma 😛)
• So constant reassurance is needed.
• He’s not a big fan of PDA, but when you’re alone he’s all over you.
• He loves spooning 🤭
• He has trouble sleeping, but having you in his arms really puts him at ease.
• You’re the only person he lets touch his scar.
• And if you compliment it, he gets so flustered.
• Like his face will become beet red
• He also loves seeing you bond with his uncle!
• He’s glad that his two favorite people get along.
• Zuko can get jealous easily.
• Like if he sees some random guy flirting with you, he’ll grab your hand and just glare at the guy.
• Huffing and puffing the whole time
• He’s just the cutest ever, and it doesn’t hurt that he’s also the fire lord
• “Uncle invited us over for tea.”

Sokka
• When I say this boy is whipped for you, I mean WHIPPED.
• He’s genuinely just a big puppy dog, and he’ll do anything for you.
• He’s the biggest dork and is constantly trying to find ways to impress you.
• “Hey, (Y/N)! Look at this- AH!”
• Of course it backfires most of the time, but it’s the thought that counts.
• He will stick to you like glue
• He’s always holding your hand, or hugging you, or linking your arm with his.
• He is not shy or embarrassed about how he feels about you.
• Everyone will know!
• He can be a bit overprotective.
• He tries not to be, but sometimes he just gets so worried. Especially if you were with him before taking down Ozai.
• He’s lost so many people, so he feels like he needs to protect you.
• Obviously he doesn’t, but sometimes his over protectiveness gets the better of him.
• He loves hanging out with you and his friends, seeing you all together just makes him so happy.
• But he also loves alone time with you!!!
• Remember the scene where Sokka was waiting for Suki in their tent?
(Sokka the last backbender)
• That’s all I’m saying about that
• Anyways!
• He loves complimenting you! And he loves when you compliment him!!
• He beams like a child if you say anything even remotely nice to him.
• I’m in love with this man.
• “You’re not gonna leave me to be the moon, right?”

One thing I love about tlok is how it cleary shows parental figures as real, human people who struggle and make mistakes, despite loving their children. I think a lot of media, especially for younger people has a tendency to polarise parent characters, characterising them as either ubiquitously good and caring, or malicious and abusive.
This was one of my biggest, if not only gripes with atla. The parents in that show were presented as very black and white. Ozai was an horrible father, who burned his son and used his daughter. Iroh is an always loving and supportive fatherly figure. Kya the og died for her daughter and we only hear good things about her. The most nuance had are in Ursa, Hakoda and the Beifongs. But even then, Ursa and Hakoda's 'parenting fails' are presented as out of their control, due to an abusive marriage or war respectively. And the Beifongs are mainly swept off to the side, being the least relevant to the story.
I understand why this was done, and I don't think its a bad choice entirely, especially with Hakoda and Ozai being somewhat foils of each other. But it's still feels like a bit of a boring brick wall in what usually is a very finely detailed storyline.
But tlok gives us a show of characters failing as parents, not out of malice like Ozai, but because parenting is hard.
I actually adore the choice to make Aang and Toph 'flawed parents'. They both cared for their children, but had a lot ot things in their lives that made it difficult to fully act on it. Aang was busy and dealing with the weight of the world and Toph had never been subjected to healthy parenting, therefore she struggled to adjust to it.
Tonraq and Tenzin also struggle to parent properly, their struggle coming from their daughters' respective growth. This is a common struggle many parents have as their kids grow up and it's nice to see it represented in a way that isn't just a parent wiping their tear with the old 'my lil girls all grown up and destroying things'. There's often resistance, there's butting heads, but that doesn't mean there is malice, or a lack of care and love.
Suyin is probably the most controversial mother/motherly figure in the show and that's why I love her so much. I've already yammered on about how Suyin's motherhood makes her so polarising in the fandom. But the long and short of it is that she combines both previously mentioned 'flaw types' and they feed into each other. She, like Toph, struggles due to having a poor parental figure, and she tries to compensate and cope through her family and Zaofu. This leads to her being overprotective and a bit controlling with her children. She responds emotionally when threatened or upsetm

But all of them, Aang, Toph, Tenzin, Tonraq and Suyin still love their children very much. Still care for them and still try, despite their difficulties. And I think that's something I love about tlok.
#chat have we heard of this very cool new thing called nuance#fictional characters aren't even allowed to be interesting anymore what a world we live in#this is why the atla netflif adaptation was so shitty in terms of characterisation guys#rip to unalaq and yakone who are banished to the shitty dad dimension.#though yakone also had some nuance due to having been essentially crippled#avatar#legend of korra#tlok#the legend of korra#avatar the legend of korra#atlok#lok#suyin beifong#tonraq#tenzin#aang#pro aang#aanglove#toph#toph beifong

ATLA Tiny Person AU
Lore:
A rare birth disorder that causes server dwarfism.
Dense bones.
Grows only to 5 to 6 inches.
Cannot live completely independent because of their size and lack of accommodations. Specialized doll houses are often made/ordered by caretakers that have electricity and running water.
Parvum-humanus, Latin for small humanoid is the official term.
It has been around for centuries but just now being studied like other neurodiversity spectrums.
In ancient days, it was rarer or less reported. People were abandoned at birth, believing to be changelings, or sold to the circus. There’s a good chance there’s a subgroup of survivors living out in the wild with their own communities hidden from human society.
In present days, they become brief celebrities, some more famous than others depending on marketing skills, and can make a living through online work or staring in movies (like playing fairies or scifi stuff.) Some become advocates for Parvum-humanus rights.
Fire Family:
Version 1
Zuko and Azula were twins. They were the first identical twins recorded to have Parvum-humanus. Ursa was not aware she was pregnant with twins because it was so faint on the ultra-sound. She and the doctors believed she was giving birth to a pre-mature stillborn despite carrying to full term. Imagine their surprise when not one but two tiny babies the size of fingertips came out.
Ozai was not pleased.
He did not want the attention of being father of two medical “anomalies”. This lead to many behind the scene fights with Ursa but due to public pressure, they don’t divorce.
Zuko and Azula have each other to rely on. They share a special bond both from being twins and tiny people.
Financially, life is good because of their fame and family’s business. But Ozai and Azulon completely ignores them out of shame. They still have Ursa of course, who is very overprotective, and Iroh and Lu Ten. Eventually Mai and Ty Lee who they befriend at school.
Version 2
Zuko is the only one with Parvum-humanus. The fame is short lived, since he is not a twin in this version.
Ozai was not physically abusive but was neglectful and emotionally abusive. He forbidden Zuko from leaving the dollhouse and showered all his attention on Azula. Zuko had overheard him many times saying he doesn’t have a son.
Azula used to play with him thanks to Ursa’s encouragement. She was a little rough, but thankfully Zuko’s much stronger than he looks and the kids still have fun together.
Ursa and Ozai do end up divorcing with Ozai’s neglect and ablism towards his son being the final straw. Zuko and Azula were 8 and 6 by the time of the divorce. They get joint custody over Azula but the courts barely acknowledged Zuko because raising a child with Parvum-humanus is not that “costly”.
Zuko blamed himself for the divorce, despite Ursa’s efforts to comfort him. Ursa was even more overprotective and Iroh had to ease her back often. He conviced Ursa to let Zuko attend public school so he could be around other kids again.
It’s tough at first. He’s not outright bullied; it’s more of the passive-aggressive talk behind your back type. But eventually he befriends the gaang and all is well.
Version 3
No spirit shenanigans this time. Zuko was born with a rare condition where the fetus develops but doesn't grow much in size. Most of the royal family did not know Zuko existed, believing he died at birth. Ozai was highly displeased and had nothing to do with him.
Azula and Zuko were close when they were younger and often played together. Zuko's pretty tough despite his size and could handle Azula's games which Ursa made sure didn't get out of hand. Azula eventually pulled away due to Ozai's insistence that she was too old to play with toys.
Thankfully, Ursa always stuck by Zuko's side. After she's banished for poisoning Azulon who ordered Azula's death, she took Zuko with her. But unfortunately, they were not out of danger yet. Ozai sent assassins after them to tie up the loose strings. Ursa and Zuko are separated and Zuko is forced to fend for himself while vowing to avenge his mother.

Sora Outfits Along her Character Arc
I'm hyperfixating on my dnd character tonight so here's some Sora costume outfit breakdown rambles: for context, this character comes from an Avatar The Last Airbender themed campaign that takes after the end of the 100 year war. However the war doesn't end cleanly after the fire lord's defeat. The Gaang spends five years putting out fires, recalling troops from all over the world, and squashing loyalists that keep fighting after Ozai and Azula's capture. Eventually, a 17 year old Aang establishes Republic City to welcome benders from all the nations, to teach them bending, and to establish a new method of diplomacy.
Our game began with four young students arriving to the city for the opening festival, who then uncover a deeper conspiracy that threatens to undermine the balance of the world. Sora, Suliyos, Seraphine, Han, and eventually Cab have to work together with the Gaang to discover the true enemy before their world is plunged into another bloody conflict.
Beginning of campaign: Republic City Air Nomad Uniform
When Sora first arrives in RC, she's been hiding her airbending for her whole life, growing up in Omashu with an overprotective earthbending mother and sister, never knowing her father. She's hopeful for a fresh start, and eager to meet other air nomads, but she comes to the city just claiming air nomad heritage, hiding her powers, and pretending to be a non-bender for her own safety.
Traveling Clothes: Earth Kingdom Civilian
During the opening festival at RC, the city was attacked by terrorists from a shadowy group called the "eye" which included members from all the nations. They sabotaged the city with fireworks and bombs, tried to blame the attacks on the fire nation, and restart the war. Sora and her friends helped discover and thwart these attacks, and she started establishing a connection to a spirit, though she didn't understand what was happening, and her paranoia grew. Their relationship with the Gaang strained under the stress, especially once they found out that the Eye was kidnapping Airbenders. Aang couldn't leave republic city in such dire circumstances, and our group had crossed one too many lines (including Suliyos learning to bloodbend) so we left RC to get some space and follow the lead. This brought us through the Earth Kingdom, and to a boat called the Juggernaut which would take us across the North Sea to reach Ba Sing Se.
NWT Arc: Water Tribe Furs gifted by Suliyos
En Route to Ba Sing Se we discovered one of the members of the Eye on our ship. He was a powerful bloodbender and had a sinister connection to the spirit world, but he was also a member the NWT royalty. By killing him in self defense, we also had to take a detour to the NWT to return his body, deal with the politics, discover the evil spirits corrupting the leaders of the NWT, banish the spirits, and restore the true leaders to the throne. That leader being Suliyos, one of our party members, who discovered he was the nephew of the chief, and next in line after Yue's sacrifice. Sora established her own connection with her spirit Shishi, and with a supportive crew and team, explored her airbending. These clothes were a gift as thanks for her aid. Her hair and eyes also started turning blue due to her spirit connection.
Onward to Ba Sing Se: back to the traveling clothes
One of the members of the ship's crew was Boma, an airbender, and a distant relative of Sora's. When he discovered she was family, he gave her armor and skydancer's anklets which gave her proficiency in airbending skills like acrobatics. It's been several months of travel now, so her hair's gotten longer. We also passed the ice trials, so she's wearing the mark of the wise (I think?) here. It's not a permanent tattoo though.
Ba Sing Se: Undercover Mode
So many things happened once we reached Ba Sing Se. We discovered the evil spirit - Father Glowworm - had kidnapped Hei-Bei, caused a famine, the Dai Li was creating living terra cotta warriors to impersonate members of the white lotus, they managed to kill a dragon, we managed to bring it back, Sora's spirit got kind-of-killed, it's been a wild ride. In any case, we're wanted all over the earth kingdom and the iconic outfit from before wasn't doing her any favors so she got a change of clothes.
Freeing the Airbenders!!!! Family Drama!!! AAA
The Dai Li had captured the airbenders to use as their own specialized army against the fire nation, and subdued/hypnotized them with the evil spirits. When we broke open everything in BSS, we also 1) rescued Sora's family from an assasination attempt in Omashu, and 2) freed the airbenders! Her dad wasn't with them, but she discovered, he had been sending home airbender regalia all this time, and her mother had hidden it away from her, to keep her from pursuing airbending to keep her safe. Now she's wearing it proudly to lead the newly freed nation, and to go rescue her father from the fire nation.
But her mother still hates her life decisions, Aang is worried the airbenders are losing their culture, and the airbenders resent Aang for the differences that led to them getting captured in the first place. Sora needs to forge her own path, and show the world what it means to be an airbender, both in practice, and in spirit, fearlessly, and so that others might do the same.
We still have a lot of loose ends to tie up, and there will be at least one more costume iteration for her, when we go to the fire nation to handle Ozai and Azula escaping and the other spiritual problems with the dragons there. But I'm so excited about Sora and her arc so far, seeing the transition from the first airbender outfit to the final one is so satisfying and I'm so attached to her story, even if only 4 people will ever understand how much it means to me...

Hi cutie pie (: What type of yandere you think Zuko (ATLA) is?
Cause I can see him being a chill yandere, letting you have your space/your things/ your friends
But I also can see him being possessive/obsessive, not letting you go out unless he’s there, not letting you have any friends besides the gang, etc. But especially him wanting to protect you, I mean, there are people out there who hates him, right? And people who hates the Fire Nation for what they did, even if it wasn’t Zuko’s fault (at least not all of it) so, him having a soft spot for you… there are people who would want to take advantage of that and hurt you/kidnap you to get him
But idk, what you think? Also, I saw your last answer, take the time you need, don’t stress yourself<3
Hello anon! Thank you for the kind words :) I hope you have a wonderful day!
Warnings: Yandere themes
I think Zuko would be a mix of both chill and overprotective.
After the war, and going off the idea that you've fallen for him naturally, it would be a mixed bag of tendencies that Zuko faces.
On one hand, he grew up with Ozai as his father. The man was heavily abusive. Considering the amount of horrible things he did to not only Zuko but to his wife and Azula, I think Zuko would have a lot of issues with the idea of controlling or hurting you in any fashion. He loathes the idea of being anything like his father.
So for the most part, Zuko is very chill. His tendencies would lean more towards obsessive and protective rather than possessive or anything really controlling.
He never wants you to feel like his mother did. He hates the idea of you fearing him, or thinking you must bow to him at any point. Zuko wants you to know that he adores you and will never harm you at any point. If you have an issue, he listens and takes it into consideration. Your word and advice go above his friends and advisors.
But Zuko does have his moments where he becomes particularly overprotective.
He tries letting you have friends. Anyone from your past is welcome and your loved ones are given special treatment as soon as he meets them.
But he is wary of newcomers. The only ones he truly trusts are the gang and your blood family. Anyone else is treated warmly, sure, but have eyes on them at all times.
Zuko lets you have a free roam of the castle. It is your home now too, after all. But you always have one or two guards following you. He needs to make sure you're safe. You're royalty now.
Zuko has made enemies over the years. People hate him because of what his father did, and frankly, he doesn't blame them. He's doing everything in his power to fix it.
But he draws the line when it harms you.
Zuko really does try to give you some freedom. He's terrified of becoming like his father, and he never wants to push you away because of what he feels.
Yet he knows the risks of truly letting you have freedom. I have no doubt that there would have been an attempt on your life, solely because people know how much you mean to Zuko.
And after that, you always have protection around you. Zuko tries to be there for you most of the time because there is no one he trusts more than himself, but he can't be there all the time. He is the new Firelord, who is trying to pick up the pieces of a broken nation. He's rather busy.
Sometimes, Aang is there under the guise of hanging out. While he does love hanging out with you, he won't tell you that Zuko practically begged every one of the gang to keep an eye on you.
With Avatar duties, though, Aang often has to leave you in the hands of someone else. Sometimes it's Toph or Suki, or even Sokka or Katara.
Most of the time, though, you're surrounded by Fire Nation guards who have been extensively trained and vetted. Zuko is very picky about those who guard you. One step out of line, one mistake, if he has even a bit of suspicion that that can't or won't do their job right, they're gone.
Zuko wants you to feel safe and free with him. You do have the ability to roam around, make a few friends, and speak to him as you please.
It's more so in the background of your life that he tends to get overprotective. You always have guards watching you, protecting you while you relax or walk around. Your new friends are looked into to make sure they aren't assassins in disguise.
Zuko does have a big old soft spot for you; he just can't stand the thought of someone else taking that spot away.

Katara is ‘motherly’ due to being pushed into that role when her mother had died, as there was nobody else to do it. She does not like being perceived as motherly and gets furious at Toph for calling her that. Let’s repeat it: She does not like being perceived as motherly and gets furious at Toph for calling her that. She shows her affection that way: being caring and making sure her friends and family are safe.
Zuko is not ‘fatherly’ in the slightest; he struggles with his anger and is not emotionally mature. In fact, he barely understands himself. A lot of people seem to think he’s fatherly due to scenes with Aang and the whole ‘get out of the bison’s mouth’ line. That’s really pushing it, don’t you think? A few scenes and suddenly he’s this father figure? I don’t think so. It is quite literally yelled at us that he never thinks things through: he’s irrational and short-tempered. If that’s fatherly to you, I might have to give you a hug or something. He literally struggled with father issues the entire show and would freak out if you called him fatherly due to not wanting to be anything like Ozai.
Sokka is ‘fatherly/brotherly/motherly/uncle-y’ or whatever the fuck (seriously, people can’t seem to decide what he is) because he had to provide for an entire tribe alone since there were no men to hunt with him. Because of his father’s departing words to him being ‘Being a man is knowing where you’re needed most, and that’s here, protecting your sister’ he takes it to heart and finds worth in making sure everyone he cares about is safe. He believes it his job to make sure the people around him are safe which is why he tries so hard to lead the group. (Well, that and his need to be great since he has an inferiority complex and tends to overcompensate.) He shows his affection by being overprotective to those he loves and trying to make them feel better with humor and such.
Katara doesn’t like being known as motherly and only is that way due to trauma and sexist gender roles in the SWT. Zuko isn’t fatherly, he literally struggles with father issues. Sokka is parental due to the pressuring role he was pushed into when all the men in the tribe left.
I could also be really wrong though. I haven’t rewatched ATLA in a hot minute, but I am planning to. This is just what I had gathered from the show and why Dadko, Momtara, and Dadka irk me. Two of these are due to intense trauma and being pushed into a high-responsibility role and the other one is just a literal stretch that ruins his complex characterization, and completely disregards his own issues with his father. I’ll probably get back to this if I rewatch ATLA and realize I remembered something wrong.

SECRET TUNNEL! SECRET TUNNEL! THROUGH THE MOUNTAINS! SECRET SECRET SECRET SECRET TUNNEL!
I’m really liking Iroh and Aang’s conversations, I feel like it’s building a groundwork for Aang to trust Iroh, and eventually Zuko in the future.
Bumi is exactly how I pictured him, big hat, crazy dude. I love that he recognizes Aang right away and doesn’t make him do those weird tests. He’s asking the real questions “how are you still alive? And more importantly why are you still a child?” He’s nutty but he loves his friend and you see that.
But then he acts like he starts to doubt Aang, fair enough given it’s been 100 years. When Aang accuses him of not caring he gets mad and starts tricking him, playing “games.” He’s bitter and feels betrayed but Aang is still his friend, he didn’t mean to abandon the world and Bumi knows that, he just needs to be mad about it too.
My problem is that Bumi is almost painted as a villain, he’s trying to show Aang just how horrible and difficult the war has been but he almost kills them both and his innocent people in the attempt. Bumi has lived through the war in a way Aang can’t understand, he probably lost countless loved ones and has been sitting with that pain and grief for a century. Aang’s return brings it all back, but Aang also helps him start to heal from it.
I’ve always had mixed feelings about Jet, in the original too. He’s extreme, trying to take out a whole town to kill a couple soldiers, attempting regicide so he can stop a few spies. He’s traumatized obviously, angry and scared. He’s still just a kid.
Zuko having to chose between capturing the avatar and rescuing his Uncle is a beautiful moment, you see him struggle to choose between what he thinks is his destiny and the last member of his family who showed him any kindness. Him picking Iroh and finding the lotus tile as a clue, really a callback to how much of a madman Zuko is when it comes to finding people/things. Man found the avatar, his uncle, Appa, his honor, his mom, etc.
Iroh having to face his past being confronted by an earth kingdom soldier who accuses him of having no humanity, knowing nothing of loss, when we know his backstory. In the flashback, I can’t tell if Ozai is genuinely trying to comfort his brother over the loss of his only son but doesn’t really know how. Versus Zuko who is clearly still an awkward turtle duck and grieving his cousin, but still comforting his Uncle.
LEAVES FROM THE VINE, FALLING SO SLOW I’m sobbing my eyes out. All the musical callbacks to the original show are making me so happy.
Oma and Shu being lesbians???? YES I LOVE IT!!! GIVE ME MORE!!!
I always thought the tunnels could be about more than just romantic love. I’m glad they didn’t have Aang in them with Sokka and Katara because it means they can showcase familial love and its value rather than romantic. They haven’t really been showing much of Aang’s crush on Katara so it doesn’t make sense in the story for him to be with her in the tunnels anyway. Instead we can see Katara call Sokka out on some of his worse tendencies like his overprotectiveness and watch their sibling relationship grow.
The badger moles are the sweetest giant angry earthbending babies ever and no one can change my mind.

Caring a lot about the Avatar seems to be a dragon thing, in this case it's platonic ('cause it's an Azutara series), but it's just intense. It's a spiritual connection of sorts, made better by the fact that two dragons managed to form a bond with the Avatar.
Mai and Ty Lee will show up, eventually. Azula was, like, eight when she left the palace. I think in this one it's Ursa who claims them, being a little older (barely older in dragon terms, actually). It's not uncommon for dragons to claim their kid's close friends. So basically Mai and Ty Lee are Azula's siblings here. However, they think Azula is dead so imagine their shock when they see her again.
She buries her trauma under the anger. But there's a reason why she hides and proceeds to spend years living in an abandoned ship, shifted into dragon form. Azula is kinda feral in the beginning, feeling safer somewhere where she doesn't have anything to lose.
Iroh comes along, yeah. He's a good influence in Fire Nation terms, protects Zuko but also doesn't try to make him a better person. (If I'm making Azula a good guy from the beginning, someone has to be worse than in canon to compensate for one less antagonist.)
And no, Zuko's not a dragon in this. Dragons are a matrilineal thing, there's only three 'known' family lines. Actually, both Ursa and Azula being able to shapeshift is a very rare thing (and Azula is the youngest dragon to shift since Kyoshi's early days).
Zuko's even more bitter in this version, with his vision of Ursa as a safe person tainted by Ozai – when he gets a little older, he realizes he doesn't care if she killed Azulon, if she tried to kill Ozai, his anger comes from her killing Azula. Because yes, they didn't have the best relationship ever, but it's still his little sister. At some point, unlike canon, he can see that she tried and that most of her actions were about helping him.
It's just really tragic. Stuck with Ozai, thinking the only people that genuinely loved him consisted of a murderer and a dead girl that will never be older than eight.
(The angst potential of later on, when he learns the blue dragon he has been trying to kill is Azula...)
- Ash 🔥🍌
Thanks for this, Ash!
Caring a lot about the Avatar seems to be a dragon thing, in this case it's platonic ('cause it's an Azutara series).
I know! but...will Katara live the same years as Azula? because Azula will live more than 400 years.
So basically Mai and Ty Lee are Azula's siblings here. However, they think Azula is dead so imagine their shock when they see her again.
Azula's sisters! It seems impossible to see them like this, but I will try to do my best!
I can already imagine Mai and Ty Lee watching Azula.
Azula just eating and jams eating mochis and then turns around and looks at Mai and Ty Lee, and bam! The mochis fall into his mouth, lol
and Azula is the youngest dragon to shift since Kyoshi's early days.
Azula always first. 😎
Stuck with Ozai, thinking the only people that genuinely loved him consisted of a murderer and a dead girl that will never be older than eight.
Poor Zuzu, I just hope Azula then carries him on her back as they fly through the air.
Zuzu deserves to be with her little sister, maybe he becomes very overprotective without caring that she is more powerful.
The angst potential of later on, when he learns the blue dragon he has been trying to kill is Azula...
Distress? I see a great comedy scene!
just imagine how Azule bites Zuko on the ass for trying to kill her and then scolds him while he's still a dragon and her brother doesn't understand her.
#Azula#Zuko#Ursa#Mai#Ty Lee#Gaang#Azutara#atla#avatar the last airbender#dragons au!#au dragons#Azula dragon#dragons#This is great chaos!

Hey @juniperhillpatient I’ve got another ask for ya
So today I was watching clips of the TVDU and came across this quote below.
Haley asked Klaus why he paints, and he answers thusly
“Painting is a metaphor for control. Every choice is mine, the canvas, the color. As a child I had neither a sense of the world nor my place in it, but art taught me that one’s vision could be achieved with sheer force of will. The same is true of life. Provided one refuses to let anything stand in one’s way.”
-Klaus Mikaelson
The quote reminds me of my own personal headcanon about “artist Azula”. Her life was dictated by others from all we’ve seen. Most especially by Ozai. Along with the other trappings and expectations of royalty. Lo and Li’s training of Azula, until she reaches perfection and having “not one hair out of place” come to mind especially.
Azula approached Fire bending with a single-minded determination. Worked at it, and controlled her own destiny. Being one of the most powerful fire benders alive by the time the series rolls out.
This discipline allowed Azula to attain her fabled blue flames. To control her own abilities, and exceed any expectations thrust on her.
Another example could be when Azula tried to balance being commander and friend both with Mai and Ty Lee. Believing that she was doing so adequately and was in control of the situation. Until the Boiling Rock and her friend’s betrayal (though understandable, Mai and Ty Lee actions still leave a bad taste in my mouth).
It also reminded me of your wizards of waverly place Au. Where Ty Lee called Azula and Katara an “art couple”. Or even in @theowritesfiction “Azula’s kitchen nightmare”. We’re Azula is a master chef, that turns food into art. Or Katara masters the art of talking to people.
Art is the payoff of good skill from countless hours of constant repetition. Not merely paint. Art (and thus a desire for control) can be found in anything. Like martial arts, a studied topic, oratory, or even writing. Your magnum opus in Happenstance is an example of masterful art.
Anyways, this just reminded me of my little headcanon about an “artist Azula”.
Do you any similar headcanons for Azula and/or Katara?
What do you think about Azula and her relationship to the nature of control? Or lack there of. In my view it can be both beneficial, but can also be exceedingly harmful as well. As shown by mental breakdown. Spurned on from being betrayed by her brother, than her friends, than abandoned and lowered in esteem by her father.
For an Azutara question, how do you think Katara could help Azula deal with her (potentially) toxic notions of control? Or vice versa, when Katara is being to controlling over certain things as well. Like say being overprotective of her loved one’s safety?
I’m sorry it’s taken me so long to answer this excellent & thoughtful ask! I think it’s because I keep wanting to have something meaningful to add but I really don’t I just enjoy your thoughts.
I don’t know if the Klaus quote above is ever what I was going for when I’ve written Azula as an artist before but reading it I could certainly see this being how Azula views art yes absolutely that makes so much sense.
I think Katara would be a totally different more chaotic type of artist. Water is the element of change & Katara is controlled but she’s also fluid & adaptable with her bending & I think that would come through in her art style.
Azula would be more focused on the technical element while Katara would be more focused on the process & less upset if her art changed from her original vision as she went.
Anyway I just love the character analysis & yeah I don’t really have anything else to add!

Dark Platonic! Fire Nation Royal Family x Non-bender Reader Part Two

Part 1
With Ozai
You never imagined returning back to the fire nation, it felt so foreign for you.
But your father was there to receive you with open arms.
Ozai felt pure happiness to have you back home, his favorite child is back under his care.
Yet, you grew up into a young lady who came to realize that Ozai is not kind, but rather manipulative and evil.
Yet like any girl, you missed your father, being in his presence gave you a secure feeling.
You missed how he spoils you, how you get whatever you want with just one signal.
However you don't miss his creepy possessive attitude.
"I will burn the whole world down for you, my sweet child"
With Azula
Azula lied to her father about Zuko killing the avatar all just to have you return home.
Once you are back home, she is overjoyed and tries to spend as much as time with you.
However, when you go to spend vacation on Ember Island, she makes sure to terrorize anyone who comes to speak to you.
When she felt that you and Ty Lee became friends, she made sure to jab at her friend with harsh words.
Sometimes Azula take the overprotective big sister role to an extreme where she burned a guy just for flirting with you.
Zuko helped her with that.
"How dare you say that filth to my dear sister, now you shall rot in the ashes of your despair!"
With Zuko
He regrets returning home when he sees how much time you spend with Azula and Ozai.
One of the main reason why he wished to capture the avatar was so he could prove himself worthy of protecting you.
But now, Zuko feels envious and jealous.
Even during your journey to find the avatar, Zuko couldn't bear the thought of anyone close to you.
His hatred for the Gaang increased when saw Sokka try to become close with you.
Now he came to realize that Sokka is a lesser threat than his father and sister.
The shock that came is when he found that you ran away.
You ran away to help the avatar and his friend.
Which made Zuko take the decision to support you, by helping himself and his uncle to escape.
Despite Ozai and Azula who threatened to murder the avatar and his team just to have you back.
"Don't worry, (Y/n), I will always be by your side and support you"

Y'all just be saying and believing anything now.
The misogyny of the Water Tribes was a plot device. One that was corrected and unlearned and quickly let go of after SEASON ONE. Sure, Sokka still had some lessons to learn- most notably his overprotectiveness for Suki, but even then, that problem he had was due to the loss of someone he loved, not because he was misogynistic. Most of the time after, he was learning how to become a better leader and strategist for the people he cared about.
The Water Tribe is not defined by their misogyny, not in the slightest. They were defined as a tribe of loyal people, driven by family and friendship, and those are the very qualities Sokka is constantly striving for.
Water Tribe men were never demonized. Sokka and Pakku and Hakoda are flawed men who do what they can to protect those they love, just like Iroh and Zuko. The Fire Nation was the actual nation of the villains- if we’re going to nitpick, the villain is Ozai, whose influence over the Fire Nation leads them to have the same mindset. Iroh and Zuko have to unlearn their nationalism and colonizer mindsets throughout the show, and yet no one is complaining that Japanese people are demonized. Make it make sense.
You also have to remember, the ATLA nations weren’t all based on a singular culture. There’s a diagram somewhere that explains it better than I ever could, but not one nation’s culture was solely modeled on one of the cultures in our world, whether through philosophy, design, or whatever else.
Instead of taking things personally and believing any negative portrayal of a loosely represented culture is a racist commentary, get yourself together and actually have some media literacy, for fuck’s sake. The fact that I have to explain this at all is lunacy. Keep it to yourself or reexamine before making a heavy accusation of racism. Unfortunately, it’s not that simple and a basic skill of understanding how stories work is needed. Jfc.
Native fans have been talking about this for a while but I actually think it's good that they're reducing the Sokka's sexism plot line because it's just so weird that they focused in so hard on the Water Tribe apparently being misogynist but there weren't any other misogynist plot lines for the OTHER Nations, so this just kind of reads as the Water Tribe being uniquely demonized for no reason.
This is also weird because the Inuit (who the Water Tribe take influence from) were traditionally very egalitarian and valued women's work, while the cultural eras that the Fire & Earth Nations were based on (Imperial Japan & China) weren't exactly known for equality between men and women. So this just kinda reads as Native men being demonized & went out of their way to do it despite the cultural time period inspirations.
But I know how white ATLA fans treat the Native characters anyway.

Aang and Toph not being good parents is in character
I’m not surprised that Aang and Toph aren’t good parents. I know some people don’t like that fact and don’t think that Aang and Toph would be that way, but it’s pretty believable looking back at ATLA. I’m not saying that who you are at twelve is who you will be at forty, but I’m just giving perspective.
1: Aang is The Last Airbender
It is literally in the title. Avatar: The Last Airbender. His race, culture, friends, and everything is basically gone. He, Appa, and the Air Temples are the last pieces of the Air Nomad culture. As far as Aang knows, when he dies, the Air Nomad culture dies with him. Yes, he can teach other people and his children, Bumi and Kya, about it. But it’s not the same. When Tenzin came along and he turned out to be an airbender, Aang must’ve been elated. He was no longer the only airbender left. He had a son who he can teach airbending to, who he can teach the ways of the Air Nomads too, who can carry on the cultural teachings after he dies. His culture can still live on.
I think, in Aang’s mind, he let his happiness at having an airbender get in the way of his other children. From Legend of Korra, we know that Aang would take Tenzin on vacations without his other children and that the people at one of the Air Temples didn’t even know that Aang had other children. Now, that’s fucked up. No question about it. But maybe in Aang’s mind, he felt that Bumi had his Uncle Sokka, Kya had Katara, so he just felt like he needed to be with Tenzin. Not realizing that his other children needed their dad too.
2: Aang is the Avatar
Did we forget what Aang’s whole arc in ATLA is? How he felt responsible and guilty for the Hundred Year war because he ran away? How he had one year to defeat Ozai, put in the work to learn water, earth, and fire, and managed to put an end to the war without compromising his beliefs? That guilt that he felt isn’t something that will just go away. We know in Legend of Korra that Kya mentions how Aang put his duty as the Avatar ahead of his family. We see in ATLA that Aang attempts to be the peacemaker between people (The Great Divide, for example) and sees it as his duty as the Avatar.
There’s a good chance that the reason why Aang put his Avatar duties ahead of his family was to keep the peace and maybe to alleviate some of the guilt he felt for the Hundred Year war. Maybe he also thought that by keeping the peace, this would ensure that another war doesn’t happen and so he would be keeping his family safe as well. I don’t mean to get too off topic, but a lot of fathers think like that. That as long as they work and put food on the table for their family, they are protecting them, but they don’t realize that their kids need them to be there emotionally and mentally as well.
3: Toph was raised by overprotective parents
I mean. We saw it in Book 2. Her parents viewed her as helpless due to her blindness. Even after Toph proved that she could take care of herself, they still saw her as this delicate being. Toph wasn’t allowed to be Toph with her parents. They didn’t support her in the things she liked to do and she had to keep it a secret from them. So when Toph had kids, it’s only natural that she would want to be the parent that she didn’t have. The thing is, there needs to be balance. While yes, she allowed Lin and Suyin to do what they liked and supported them through it, eventually they needed discipline and rules. That’s what Toph forgot to do and it’s possible that the reason she didn’t want to was because she didn’t want to resemble her parents.
Of course, this came back to bite her in the ass when Suyin got in trouble with the law and Lin arrested her. But I think we’re forgetting something else. Toph is a single mother. As someone who was also raised by a single mother, it is a lot of pressure put on them. That’s an understatement. Toph may be the greatest Earthbender and created metalbending, but I don’t think she was ready to be the single mother to two daughters. She wanted to be a better parent than her’s, but things don’t always turn out the way you want.
I’m not going to comment on the whole father thing because I didn’t read the comics. Anything I know of them is through the bits and pieces I’ve seen here and on Instagram and from what I’ve seen…..I’m good, love.
Conclusion:
Aang and Toph being pretty bad parents isn’t a surprise when you consider what we know of them. That’s it.

WHAT THE FRESH HELL IS THIS?!?!
Apparently, we got the official descriptions of the characters for the live-action, and all I got to say is...
That said, content of the article is below the cut:
AANG:
“Male, Asian. Lead Character is 12, male, of East Asian or South Asian heritage.
Aang is a typical twelve-year-old boy. A bit goofy, a bit nerdy, restless in school, aways eager to join his friends for fun and games. He’s nimble, energetic, and quick in the schoolyard. Adopted at birth, Aang has struggled with questions as to how he fits in. But his loving parents have worked hard to make him feel accepted. Aang has grown up to become generous, kind-hearted and cheerful. Aang had also been gifted with an incredible mystical power. He doesn’t really understand it, but it could be the key to saving the world from a global conflict. It’s a responsibility he’s reluctant to accept because it’ll take him away from his family, friends, and everything he knows. All he wants is to just be a regular kid. SERIES REGULAR”
KATARA:
“Female, Native American. Character is 14, female, of heritage indigenous to North America.
Katara is smart, athletic, determined, and hopeful. She’s had to keep her family together ever since her mother was killed in a mysterious supernatural event several years ago, a trauma that haunts Katara every day. Recently, she has started to develop strange new powers that both intrigue and scare her. She’s looking for someone to help her understand these changes. But she has also started to find hope in the thought her new skills could lead to a brighter future for her and her family. SERIES REGULAR”
SOKKA:
“Male, Native American. Character is 16, male, of heritage indigenous to North America.
Katara’s gangly and strong older brother. Sokka is a teenager who’s forced to grow up too fast. Since his mother’s death, he had to become the leader of the famly. Which has led him to butt heads with his sister, who resents his overprotective nature. He’s concerned about her new powers, worried they might put her in harm’s way. Despite everything, he and Katara have a natural rapport, and they trust each other. He has a sharp, sardonic wit, which he often uses as a defense mechanism during uncomfortable situations. But it also makes him entertaining and likeable. SERIES REGULAR”
ZUKO:
“Male, Asian. Character is 17, of East Asian or South Asian heritage. In excellent shape, focused, and driven.
Zuko has been driven to be an overachiever by his overbearing father; a career military man. Failure is never an option, and it doesn’t matter who you hurt to get to the top. Zuko has struggled to reconcile that philosophy with his kind-hearted nature. That conflict has made him intense and guarded; which is why he comes off as brusque and arrogant. When Zuko discovers he has developed mysterious powers and is competing with Aang for a key role in their project, Zuko’s father tells him to stop at nothing to win. And if he doesn’t, he shouldn’t bother coming home. SERIES REGULAR”
Are we about to get Troy Bulton Zuko with overbearing football coach Ozai? What is this? Are we about to get Atla Riverdale edition? No one asked for this!

Okay Hades and Persephone au lore/exposition bc I’m in love with this atm
Zuko is basically Hades, god of the dead, but it’s basically a government job and he doesn’t get time off so he’s a ball of stress and anxiety
Toph’s mother, Poppy is Demeter, harvest goddess. She’s incredibly overprotective of Toph
Toph is Persephone; still blind and sees through the Earth. Her connection to plants/wildlife is stronger so she’s basically a Disney princess but way more open to murder
She doesn’t get kidnapped, she kidnaps herself. She meets Zuko one day when he’s out for a walk (ie. running away from the underworld to have a panic attack in peace for ten minutes) and decides that they’re friends now whether he likes it or not
He ends up coming up from the underworld to hang out with her a lot, until Poppy finds out and tries to stop Toph from ever seeing him again, thinking he’ll hurt her
Toph says ‘fuck that’, breaks out and kidnaps herself to the underworld. Zuko is very anxious about the whole thing but eventually realises that the whole ruling hell thing is 100x easier with help, especially if that help is named Toph and willing to fight people for him
She eats pomegranate seeds and refuses to leave, but Poppy refuses to let her go and curses the mortal world, creating winter and won’t let summer return. The other gods intervene, and Toph agrees to stay half of the year in the underworld and go back for the other half. She doesn’t forgive her mother for a long time, but they come to a sort of peace
She platonically marries Zuko because ‘queen of hell’ is a badass title and they have an awesome qpr (aro ace solidarity!). When her mother is around, she pretends it’s actually a romantic relationship to piss her off
I just have a lot of feelings about their friendship okay
Anyway, plot
Sokka and Katara are both technically demigod children of Kya, a sea nymph, but only Katara got water control abilities
Sokka got wit and wisdom, and, he insists, mythically good looks
Aang is a demigod, and his father is Gyatso, god of the southern wind. He pretty much still has airbending (and his dope tattoos lol) but not the other elements
He’s sent on 12 quests (ripoff 12 labours of Heracles) and the last one is to capture the three headed guardian of the underworld
Which is a dragon
Which is Ran, Shaw and Druk (Zuko refuses to give them all one name because it seems unfair because they all have their own personalities and he’s an absolute softie for his dragons)
[the fic is in progress!!]
Misc things
Mai is Thanatos (death). She’s dating Ty Lee, who is Elpis (hope) and it’s very symbolic and romantic
Jet is Hermes, and just a casual agent of chaos
Ozai was a Titan, and so was Azula. Zuko fought and defeated Ozai, who was sent to Tartarus. Azula is held elsewhere in the underworld, but Zuko hopes he can help/rehabilitate her instead of locking her up. Lo and Li are the furies and basically her carers/therapists
Iroh was also a Titan who took the side of the gods when they fought them, and basically retired afterwards to hang out in the mortal world and hand out tea and advice. Zuko visits him every year and still can’t understand his tea or his advice
Lu Ten was a god, killed by Ozai
Yue is Selene, Suki is Artemis, and the Kyoshi Warriors are her huntresses. The moon is inherently sapphic so Yueki
Zuko feels terrible about the Orpheus Incident™️
This universe’s version of Secret Tunnel is about Toph building the tunnel to the underworld so she can hang out with Zuko, then marrying him for tax purposes (Toph loudly sings it at any given opportunity)
