As students return to school across Finland this week, many will no longer be allowed to use mobile phones. Several large cities are implementing phone bans during the school day to curb digital distractions in classrooms.

The government plans to introduce a bill to Parliament regarding mobile phone bans in schools, but the details of the law are still undecided. However, last fall, Helsinki schools received guidance on updating their rules to address mobile phone use.

"In many schools, the mobile phone ban has already been incorporated into the rules in spring," Outi Salo, head of basic education for the City of Helsinki, told STT.

The majority of schools in Tampere have also introduced a phone ban.

Kristiina Järvelä, head of basic education for the city of Tampere, stressed that the ban is not intended to punish young people. She believes that students should be offered good outdoor activities and stimulation instead of mobile phones.

"The idea is to set aside phones and give nature and the world a chance. However, even if phones are taken away, indifferent teens may still sulk on the playground. Simply banning phones doesn’t necessarily yield the best outcome," Järvelä told STT.

The Finnish National Agency for Education (EDUFI) advised schools to address disruptive phone use, citing everyone’s right to a peaceful learning environment. Schools can decide how to implement mobile phone bans, including whether phones can be used during breaks.

"We recommend that all schools and educational institutions prohibit disruptive phone use during lessons and limit its use during breaks according to current legislation, while we await the new, refined legislation," said Laura Francke, Education Counsellor at the Agency.

Sunny start to the school year

With most schools opening on Wednesday or Thursday, students in Finland will kick off the school year under clear and warm skies.

The weather is warm nationwide, with temperatures possibly exceeding the 'heatwave' threshold of 25 degrees Celsius in some areas as early as Tuesday. Although the recent high humidity has made the heat feel more oppressive, conditions are expected to become drier by Wednesday

The warmest weather is expected in Lapland and the western regions, with temperatures hitting several degrees above 20 degrees nationwide.

Rainfall will mostly subside for at least the next few days, though thunderstorms and showers remain possible on Tuesday along the southwestern coast and nearby regions.

"The rains will be isolated and localised. Almost the entire country will enjoy dry and pleasant summer weather," said Yle meteorologist Henriikka Heikinoja.
