In Defense of The Lawn
Last week, Susan Harris emailed me regarding my recent article “In Defense of The Lawn” in the July/August issue of The American Gardener magazine. “Can we use it for the Rant?” she said, “Where it belongs?”
Susan is right – it is a rant of sorts, though I like to think of it as a well-reasoned argument.  In any case, it’s a discussion I think we should all have; and when I contacted David Ellis, editor of The American Gardener, he kindly permitted us to run an excerpt here to start that discussion.  David has also generously provided a discount membership offer to the American Horticultural Society, so you can read the rest of the article (and there is much more) either digitally or in print, and take advantage of other wonderful member benefits.
I am certainly not paid to say this, but I believe that if you’re a gardener in the U.S – or a gardener interested in American horticulture, you should seriously consider joining this excellent organization.  More information is provided at the end of this piece.
Now let’s get back to the ranting…
________________________________________
Mine is not a lawn by the standards of the HOA protected subdivision that dominates the landscape less than three miles away. It is not the lawn of golf-courses and nervous groundskeepers further east towards the city. It does not cry out its nitrogen dependence in shades of electric green, nor does it bankrupt the resident gardener with various expensive treatment programs meted out on a meticulous schedule and marked with little yellow flags.
Claytonia virginica in my lawn in mid-April.
Each week, cropped at a machine finished four inches, my lawn in Northern Virginia provides recreational space, control over rampant woodland invasives, and the necessary void spaces that connect cultivated and uncultivated parts of the property and give our eyes needed rest.
Unlike conventional turf lawns, which are usually a near monoculture of one or two lawn grass species, my lawn is a hodgepodge of species—natives and non—including many common broadleaf thugs such as dandelions and plantain. But to chemically eradicate these less desirable plants would mean the loss of other, sweeter species—the claytonia… the violets…and the vast network of trout lilies (Erythronium americanum), whose lovely spotted leaves make up for the rare sighting of a flower.
To term this open space a “lawn” is therefore to be exceedingly generous. But I, and many others who maintain their lawns in this way—and who don’t have to rely on summer irrigation to keep them alive— look out upon them and are satisfied.
Right up until the minute a friend or neighbor informs us we should be ripping them out and planting a meadow instead.
The concept of being judged by one’s lawn has had a long and painful history. Knowing this, it is worth reflecting whether our laudable desire to be excellent stewards of our environment means we are continuing to mete out this judgement clothed in a different set of robes. Are we ignoring the desire of average homeowners to keep their beloved lawns, and, at the same time crippling our own ecological argument by offering idealized alternatives that do not meet their needs?
Untreated but beautifully usable. In pre-COVID days, this space was used once a week with friends during the summer.
A PERSPECTIVE SHIFT
Meticulous standards of lawn care might very well be considered a legacy of growing suburbs in the mid- to latter half of the 20th century. For decades, urged on by a continually “improved” chemical arsenal, homeowners were instructed to treat their lawns like a prized rose bed.
No weeds. No bugs. No discoloration. And, to this gardener at least, no life.
By this standard, the masses were judged, and yet it was only attainable for your average weekend gardener in an average-sized American lot with average amounts of staff (that is to say, none), through the regular application of hundreds of pounds of fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides every year, with known and unknown collateral damage to personal health, ecosystems, and watersheds.
In 1962, Rachel Carson’s groundbreaking book Silent Spring forced society to think deeply upon the costs of chemical warfare. The average homeowner, however, could neatly categorize such issues as a problem with industrial agriculture, and ignore their own part in the process. The chemical quest for the perfect lawn continued throughout the ’80s and into the ’90s.
And that is only half of the story. Such lawns required at least one inch of water per week to remain healthy and hydrated. In areas of abundant summer rainfall, there was no issue; but in many other areas of the western and southwestern United States, one inch per week required that gardeners tap into a rapidly dwindling resource.
No matter. The subtle and not-so-subtle influence of television, magazines and other national media sources, aided and abetted by the lawn-care industry, pushed a onesize-fits-all approach. So, gardeners continued to treat, water, mow, and obsess about their lawns; and as the end of the century approached, many handed homeowners’ associations further power to require similar, exacting standards of them. Or perhaps more accurately, of their neighbors.
It is no wonder then that gardeners in a new millennium were open to burning their bras. Over the last 20 years, we have seen a positive shift in the way we look at gardens, wildlife, chemical treatments, and our moral obligation to conserve the many fragile ecosystems around us.
Trends towards meadow gardening and the evolution of the New Perennial Movement have opened the eyes of many to the rich ecosystems that can develop in the presence of species diversity and the lack of chemical intervention. Increasingly, gardeners and naturalists find themselves working together to create cultivated spaces that radiate exciting, uncultivated energy. That’s a beautiful thing.
It doesn’t come much more beautiful and ecologically vibrant than this. Waves of perennials offer texture, movement, habitat and food sources at The Delaware Botanic Gardens (Piet Oudolf design).
But in their desire to free both the environment from harm and the homeowner from drudgery by advocating against the sins of the past, is it possible experts have begun to swing the pendulum too far in the opposite direction? Fellow garden writers, horticulturists, Master Gardeners, naturalists, and nursery people, I’m talking to you.
Respectfully of course.
We are ignoring the many commendable functions of a lawn, chastising people for wanting those functions, and ignoring a large proportion of homeowners who do not artificially treat their lawns and are instead content to mow a vigorous and herbaceous green space wherever it grows. To those homeowners we offer a—highly arguable—“low-maintenance” solution to a functional space that is neither a problem, nor a high-maintenance headache.
Wouldn’t it be more effective to focus our efforts on helping homeowners to maintain the lawns and open spaces that they love in ways that can equally be loved by the planet?
My Jack Russell Mungo lives and breathes for chasing balls on the lawn. I’d hate to take that away from him.
PURPOSEFUL AND PLEASING
Functionally, a lawn or open space not only provides an outdoor exercise area for children and adults, but a recreational space for gatherings and entertaining—recreational space that a meadow cannot offer. It is versatile, permeable, comfortable to walk upon, and invites the play of outdoor games.
As Paul Tukey, author of The Organic Lawn Care Manual and Tag, Toss & Run: 40 Classic Lawn Games wryly remarks, “It’s no fun to play badminton in a meadow when you can’t find the shuttlecock.”
In addition, lawns discourage tick populations where devastating tick-borne diseases like Lyme, babesiosis, and ehrlichiosis proliferate, and they allow pets to roam without harming expensively landscaped areas elsewhere in the yard.
Lawns with healthy root systems act as sponges. When compared to garden beds filled with more double-shred than plants (an unfortunate but popular method of planting in America), lawns provide excellent capture of storm runoff. And carbon. And airborne particulate matter. Where summer rainfall makes lawns viable, they may also be utilized as aesthetically pleasing firebreaks against the ever-present threat of wildfire.
THE LAWN AND LANDSCAPE
From a design standpoint, lawns or other open expanses create areas of rest for our eyes and our senses. “Emotionally, they are breathing spaces,” says Carolyn Mullet, garden designer and owner of the garden tour company CarexTours. “Design is about the interplay of mass and void, and there is a very different intensity to each. Both are needed. Mass is framed and enhanced by void.”
Gardener or no, we recognize this instinctively. Majestic mature trees dotted through open lawns feel calming and restful; conversely, we find ourselves invigorated and energized by the life radiating from tall meadow grasses and wildflowers.
Getting the balance right between these two elements is a skill. Too much void and you are left with a sense of emptiness. Too little and the planting can feel suffocating or chaotic.
A mown framework can help us to appreciate other ecologically dynamic areas in our landscapes, communicating a sense of familiarity and comfort through what Joan Iverson Nassauer, a landscape architecture professor at the University of Michigan, terms a shared “landscape language.” Just as wide, mown paths through the meadow of a large public garden allow us to immerse ourselves comfortably in an inherently energetic environment, mown areas abutting a woodland or meadow at the borders of our yards make the area feel tended and approachable.
A carefully curated late fall meadow at RHS Wisley.
Though some might protest against the ecologically negative and often arbitrary effects of culture on the landscape language being spoken, studies show human beings are naturally and unintentionally fluent in the language of their region. To effect positive ecological changes, it is therefore wise to become fluent ourselves, and stop shouting at them in a different tongue.
Open spaces play a vital role in our landscapes, and for areas of the country where abundant rainfall creates green whether you want it to or not, a mowed lawn is the simplest answer to unending maintenance woes—no matter how the experts protest otherwise.

Dignity Health Sports Park Partners With Volta to Provide Free Electric Vehicle Charging
In conjunction with the Protect the Pitch program, which continues to lead the industry in stadium sustainability and clean energy efforts, Dignity Health Sports Park has installed 12 new Volta electric vehicle charging stations that will be available to guests free of charge at all events.
“We are extremely excited to install Volta electric vehicle charging stations at Dignity Health Sports Park,” said General Manager Katie Pandolfo. “We continue to prioritize creating the most sustainable stadium and aligning with Volta is an opportunity that will impact those efforts greatly.”
Volta designs electric vehicle charging networks for forward-thinking businesses seeking to provide seamless, simple and free charging. The company leverages machine learning, and artificial intelligence to predict the number of stations and charging speeds needed to match customer visit times. Volta designed Dignity Health Sports Park’s charging network as a foundation for further expansion to match the park’s rising electric vehicle demands. Projecting out based on the average Volta station impact in Los Angeles, Dignity Health Sport Park’s 12 stations will offset an estimated 250,000 pounds of CO2 annually.

The Dangers of Drought: Causes, Effects & Why We Should Avoid It
The National Geographic defines drought as an extended period of unusually dry weather when there is not enough rain. By “not enough”, it means that the rainfall in a given time period cannot provide for the needs of a given location. And rain is needed to grow crops, and provide for the area’s water supply.
As climate change interferes with regular weather systems, drought is bound to be a definite side effect. Scientific studies show that irregular systems in atmospheric circulation can interrupt with storm paths causing no rain for months at a time. Changes in wind patterns can also affect how much moisture remains in the soil.
In simple terms, climate change is causing unforeseen changes in weather patterns. These changes lead to a difference in the period of rainy days there are in a given time frame. For example, if we experience a week of rain in July this year, that could change to just five days in the next year due to climate change.
How does drought conditions affect people?
The absence of rain may lead to survival problems such as limited amounts of potable water and damage to plants. As we know, water is the basic necessity of human beings and other living things. And plants compose the lowest layer of the food chain. Without water nor plants, the food chain will crumble and man’s survival is bound to only last for a very short period of time.
Socio-economic issues such as hunger and necessary re-settlement of residence, among others, can also arise from drought-related events. If there becomes a low supply of water in an area, people will have no choice but to vacate (if they can) to a place with a better water source. (This is why in The Hunger Games, the first place a tribute looks to camp is near a river.)
  Megadrought is not a transformer.
The Washington Post reports that “Megadroughts are sustained periods of sparse precipitation and significant loss of soil moisture that span generations, about 10 times as long as a normal three-year drought.” If you thought a three-year drought was bad, try thirty.
The current drought being experienced in the Southwest United States is not even comparable to what’s expected to come. In the later years of the century, a megadrought will be experienced throughout the region and the central Plains. This can possibly drive out people from those areas leading to an economic crisis.
In 35 years, if climate change continues at its current rate, the said areas will experience a shift in weather. That swing will last approximately three decades. During megadroughts, there will be harsh impacts on megacities, populations, and water availability. Lack of water can lead to so many health problems, not just famine, but also sanitation issues and pollution.
Cornell University, Columbia University, and NASA researchers forewarned major water shortages and problems that could lead to drying out vegetation. This, in turn, will lead to “monster” wildfires in southern Arizona and parts of California. These are all the results of climate change and its unnatural acceleration throughout the years.
  Water Consumption
An average American consumes a maximum of 200 gallons of water per day. Taking baths, flushing down the toilet, brushing teeth, cooking, and drinking all consume water. 30% of the daily consumption is used on outdoor activities, like cleaning the car, mowing the lawn, and gardening. This leads to the conclusion that 60 gallons of water are used outside by a single person, every single day. If we multiply that to the millions of people in the United States, we get more or less about 9 billion gallons of water.
  Unwanted Water Consumption
Irrigation systems for lawns are problematic for having leaks. Installed underground sprinklers are turned on regularly and they go unnoticed when leaking. According to the EPA, an irrigation system with a leak of 1/32nd of an inch in diameter (about the thickness of a dime) can waste about 6,300 gallons of water per month.
Let us clarify that, a hole with the thickness of a dime, not the diameter of a dime, can cause that much water to leak in a month! If 1 CCF (100 cubic feet / 748 gallons) of water in California costs $3.88, that would amount to at least $30 a month on a tiny leak. That’s how much water your irrigation system is wasting, and how much money you’re paying… for nothing.
The Environmental Protection Agency EPA finds that leaks “can waste more than 1 trillion gallons per year nationwide. That’s equal to the annual household use of more than 11 million homes.” These leaks go unnoticed because a few drops of water don’t seem like a big deal on the outset. However, counting millions of households with leaky pipes and faulty water sources, leaks cause an average of about 2.7 billion gallons. That’s 2.7 billion gallons of water wasted in the United States of America because of leakage and poor plumbing.
  Water used on your lawn
The EPA found that nearly one-third (1/3) of residential water consumption across the country is used in watering landscapes. That amount is used, more often than not, for lawns.
According to a NASA study, lawns in the United States, when clumped together, would take as much space as the New York state (not the city). The total land area would be about fifty thousand square miles of grass. If, in theory, we water lawns every day amounting to that big of an area, we would need an astronomical amount of water! Unfortunately, there are still a lot of households that regularly water their lawns daily. Thus, using a great quantity of water for the grass. Natural lawns aren’t good ideas for water conservation.

Switch to drought resistant, water-conserving, and convenient landscaping.
If you want a lush patch of green without the hassle and cost of maintenance, artificial grass is the way to go. Install artificial grass in your lawn. You don’t need to be watering artificial grass for it to stay gorgeous! Artificial turf water use is significantly lower than keeping a natural grass lawn. And if you’re in a certain county or state, some local governments give out rebates if you make the switch! It’s convenient for you, and it can help save the Earth, too!
Conserve water every day to keep the drought away!

Too Much Grass? Here’s How to Shrink Your Yard!
A sprawling lawn has long been a suburban status symbol. Offering space for shade trees and a place for the kids and dogs to play, the great American lawn holds a revered place in our heart. But when the labor of love in maintaining its lush green beauty seems more like just plain labor, reimagining the traditional lawn can give it new purpose with easier upkeep, a more environmentally friendly footprint and even lower water bills.
A Consumer Reports survey found that almost one third of homeowners who made some changes to their lawn reduced its size in some way. Most of the survey respondents replaced the grass with flower beds, patio space, ground cover or even artificial turf. Our July 2017 blog post offers eight landscaping ideas for small lawns, which you can use as a starting point for advice and inspiration. Another source – Eartheasy – provides detailed instructions on reducing a full lawn, from turfgrass removal to plant selection.
Advantages to reducing your lawn space include:
Easier maintenance (providing you choose the right replacement for grass).
Less water consumption – According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), 30 to 60 percent of the water used in urban areas is used to water lawns. A sustainable mixed landscape requires two to three times less water than turf grass.
Less yard waste – When you reduce your lawn space, your yard produces less waste to be composted or taken to the landfill. A 2,000 sq. ft. lawn on average produces 600 to 800 pounds of clippings every summer.
Reduces air and noise pollution – Gas lawn mowers create air and noise pollution. Lawns in the U.S. cover about 20 million acres of residential land, with the average total amount of air pollution that lawnmowers cause at around 5 percent. The environment and your neighbors will thank you – especially if you’re fond of mowing on early weekend mornings.
Make way for ground cover plants
Plants in this category grow across the ground. Florida Landscaping Today provides an excellent list of the ground cover plants best suited for Central, North and South Florida. Good choices for Central Florida yards include blue daze, liriope and periwinkle. The greatest advantage of ground cover plants is their low maintenance. They also choke out weeds, enrich the soil and add visual interest. However, they are not as durable as grass for high traffic areas, and need an edge barrier to keep them in place, depending on where they’re planted.
  Convert your lawn to xeriscape
What is xeriscape? Xeriscaping is yet another way of reducing the amount of grass and high-maintenance plants. Drought-tolerant landscaping is referred to as xeriscape. This form of landscaping was originally developed for arid and semi-arid areas with severe water restrictions, but is now becoming the norm across the country due to water conservation, hotter summers and the desire to reduce water bills. Xeriscape does not offer just one look to a yard – it includes all types of drought-tolerant plants and garden styles.
As notes gardening expert Julie Martens Forney in her article on xeriscaping for HGTV, using mulch is a key xeriscape idea. Mulch slows water evaporation from soil, moderates soil temperature, helps reduce weeds and gives planting areas a finished look.
  Switch to native plants
Closely related to xeriscaping, landscaping with native plants provides the same advantages of less dependence on water and fertilizer, as they grow best in the local climate and soil conditions. Nurseries and home improvement centers offer a variety of native species, with recommendations on planting and care.
The Florida Native Plant Society provides information on native plant landscaping and its benefits for a healthy environment. This non-profit organization is an excellent resource if you’re interested in growing native plants and educating others in your community about their many advantages. Your county extension agent can also provide information on native plants suited to Central Florida.
  Opt for an edible garden
Edible gardening is fast becoming a popular hobby for homeowners, thanks to the local food movement and the desire of people to know the source of their food. You can get a variety of packaged seeds or starter plants of vegetables and herbs in any home center in your area. Because the plants are intended for consumption, have your soil tested for contaminants before starting. After all, if there are toxins in your soil, there will be toxins in your food. Should this be the case, you can instead consider container gardening or vertical gardening.
Expand your outdoor entertainment space
Today’s homeowners value outdoor entertainment space. Expanding your patio to provide generous seating for gatherings, a fire pit, summer kitchen, kids’ play area or other amenity can – depending upon the improvement – increase your home’s value, as well as decrease the lawn area. Some of these improvements are of the DIY variety, such as kits for fire pits, benches, etc., making them even more economical.
Shift to a bee and butterfly garden
You can plant a pollinator-friendly garden with native plants that attract bees and butterflies. Our January 2018 blog post highlighted the advantages of cultivating a bee and butterfly garden, recommending such flowering plants as the monarch, pentas, and shrimp. Most of these Florida-friendly plants are heat, salt and drought resistant and are therefore low-maintenance. However, be sure to avoid using insecticides and herbicides.
  Invest in gravel
A popular choice in desert areas, decorative gravel is available in a variety of colors and shapes that lend visual interest to the yard. Writing for Landscaping Network, author and horticulture expert Maureen Gilmer covers the basics of decorative gravel, with informative recommendations on aesthetics, durability and cost. If you’re interested in exploring landscaping options that minimize your property’s lawn area, Daniel’s Lawn Service & Pressure Washing Inc. can design a yard that provides low-maintenance beauty and enjoyment. 10 exceedingly strange great buildings from around the globe
New Post has been published on http://liststories.com/10-exceedingly-strange-great-buildings-from-around-the-globe/
10 exceedingly strange great buildings from around the globe
There is no doubt that art and architecture can depict the unusual. And when artistic licence meets the concrete world of construction, the results can be nothing short of mind-boggling. In this account, we take a tour in which we discover a horizontal skyscraper, a circular skyscraper, a robot building, a bizarre towering castle of wood, and the world’s largest bread basket, among other constructions that will expand your mind and even end up on your travel itineraries.
10. Horizontal Skyscraper – Vanke Center (Shenzen, China)
youtube
When is a skyscraper a skyscraper in name and shape, but not in behavior and function? When it is a fairly typical looking skyscraper that has been painstakingly constructed to lie on its side! The building logically would look totally typical if you were to turn your head 90 degrees to the side when you examine it, for the building’s position is what makes it weird. Why? Because the structure is an eerie sideways skyscraper, built horizontally along the ground but in the form of a skyscraper. Strange and thought provoking. The brainchild of Steven Holl Architects, the Horizontal Skyscraper – Vanke Center in Shenzhen, China may look normal in shape, in sharp contrast to the oddity of its physical position
Standing on supporting pillars, the building is actually the length of the height of the Empire State Building, while its physical location is stretched along an immaculately landscaped garden with grass, woody plants and pools of water. The construction of the building extended from 2006 to 2009. While bizarre, the building has both ample glass and ample class. It serves its purposes including office and conference centre functions plus apartments and hotel suites, creating both a distinctive place to work and live while providing a modern and iconic place to visit. Considered a winner, the project was recognized with a 2010 Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects, showcased as an example of excellence.
9. The Wooden Skyscraper (Archangelsk, Russia)
youtube
A house of cards may not stand well, but a wooden skyscraper? If one is creative enough to think out of the box and crazy enough to construct a monster castle of boards, then one may well be on their way to scraping the heavens with a tower of mere timber. A work of a madman, a convict, and a potential mad genius, albeit one flouting building regulations in a concerning way, the Wooden Skyscraper of Archangelsk in Russia is a towering monstrosity that is best described as a monument to one man’s personal journey to Babel in the sometimes frozen North.
Known as Sutyagin House, the 144-foot building was begun in 1992 by underworld lord Nikolai Petrovich Sutyagin in defiance of both building regulations and architectural challenges. Impressive in stature, massive but clearly rickety upon close inspection, the giant building stood in the face of all imaginable building regulations before its reign of rebellion was brought to a close. Rising spire-like but resembling a skyscraper merged with a supervillain’s castle, the massive wood structure dominated the local region for years before deteriorating during his time in prison. After his release, city authorities finally succeeded in having the structure, which had been built based on inspiration from Japanese and Norwegian wooden structures and intended as a status symbol and as accommodation, to be demolished.
8. Robot Building (Bangkok, Thailand)
youtube
Technology and state of the art buildings often go hand in hand, but it is almost unheard of for a full size skyscraper to actually look like a robot. Technologically advanced buildings may boast their advancement with the right materials, shapes, and structural elements, but simply being constructed to look like artificially intelligent, non-living humanoids is a brave mechanical step in a radically novel direction. Built with an array of superficial features added on to a body, torso and head like structure, the high tech United Overseas Bank headquarters in the form of a robot building in Bangkok, Thailand forms a globally unprecedented and exceptionally striking project.
While looking just like a robot might seem laughable as a merging of architectural and technological oddity, the construction also constitutes a spectacular and unique example of creating a building with “robo-morphic” architecture. The idea was to reflect the high-tech nature of the bank through architecture and the work certainly did its job. The half window, half wall bump out eyes, antennae and ears combine nicely with the abdomen, torso and head to make a pretty cute, albeit huge and stationary robot headquarters. And where did Thai architect and genius Sumet Jumsai get his inspiration? He created the vision for the building based on the idea he developed by seeing his son’s toy robot after the Bank of Asia commissioned him to design them a new headquarters building.
7. Genex Tower (Belgrade, Serbia)
youtube
Eastern European architecture can gain the look of science fiction constructions, sometimes merging the modern and the castle-like in one building. Strange, awkward-looking in the eyes of some but also undeniably impressive in sheer size, the Genex Tower of Belgrade is an architectural monstrosity dating back to times of great conflict. Looking like a bizarre cross between the CN Tower and the Brandenburg Gate on steroids, the structure is extraordinary for its gate-like shape coupled with its narrowness and sheer height.
Built as the novel and daring planned creation of architect Mihajlo Mitrovic forms a massive arch built with two skyscrapers, the taller reaching a height of 377 feet, further distinguished with a huge yet remarkably incongruous revolving restaurant perched 459 feet above the ground. The restaurant’s circular shape is a prime example of the irregularity and incongruity of the different structural components of the tower’s form and strange spatial layout. The connecting section of the building that creates the arch shape consists of a two story bridge walkway extending between the unified towers. Walking between the two towers is a startling experience, with nothing below for hundreds of feet as you boldly walk the relatively short distance bridging the giant towers.
6. Burj Khalifa (Dubai)
youtube
Acclaimed as the tallest building on the planet, the Burj Khalifa is remarkable not only for its sheer size and height at 2,716.5 feet and more than 160 stories. The building holds a multitude of world records, including tallest building in the world, highest occupied floor, most stories of any building globally, highest outdoor observation deck, tallest service elevator, and tallest free-standing structure. (Oh, and there was also that time Tom Cruise climbed up the side.) Constructed of the gigantic building was started in 2004, while the exterior of the building reached completion in 2009 prior to the opening of the structure in 2010.
Built in part to increase tourism revenue, the construction was supported by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in a bid to create an extraordinarily striking creation that would garner a significantly greater global recognition of Dubai. Containing hundreds of apartment and hotel suites, the building also boasts swimming pools and elevators that include equipment that can reach speeds of 33-feet-per-second. Constructed primarily from reinforced concrete with significant quantities of steel structural elements, the tower has both a stepped appearance and narrow spires that reflect Islamic architectural styles characteristic of Dubai.
5. Goldin Finance Tower (Tianjin, China)
youtube
Remarkable for its incredibly ordinariness and simplicity in shape coupled with impossible height and slenderness, the Goldin Finance Tower of Tianjin, China reaches an astonishing height of 1,957 feet but is essentially cube shaped and remarkably spindly. Almost a third of a mile high, the building has been likened to a huge walking stick due to its spindly appearance and supertall design as it nears completion. With 117 stories contained within its vertical rise, the Tianjin central business district landmark is deceptively ordinary in its almost stereotypically skyscraper shape. However, the sheer height of the building combined with its relatively narrow and square base shape in fact accentuates the dramatic appearance of the building, giving it the incredibly striking appearance of a giant square stick.
Unlike more bulbous or spire adorned tall buildings, the Goldin Finance Tower is at its heart a functional building that devotes the bulk of its construction to practical usage thanks to its continuous square shape that rises to great heights without being reduced to narrow spires and vanity constructions. With four prominent corner reinforcements rising vertically, the building contains finely designed, rectangle-shaped window patterns that add to the meticulous and functional look of the building’s construction. Inside, the construction includes sky lobbies and the world’s highest swimming pool, adding more distinctive elements to the already dramatic looking tower.
4. AlDar Headquarters (Abu Dhabi)
youtube
Built in Abu Dhabi, the bizarre AlDar Headquarters might shock first time visitors or lead to a false UFO crash report. Why? Because the enormous but beautiful structure is in fact the world’s first circular skyscraper. Towering at 360 feet tall, the building represents unity, stability and rationality as well as infinity and was completed in 2010. The structure resembles a gigantic plate that has been stuck into the desert ground, widened slightly and then packed with office space. The two sides of the building are interspersed with a continuous edge of windows that resembles a band that has been used to join two halves, but further increases the sideways landed UFO appearance of the structure.
Reinforcing beams crisscross the outsides of the building, creating the appearance of a myriad of diamond shape structures on the sides. On a smaller scale, within each diamond like face section, multitudes of diamond like lines define the shapes of multiple window panels grouped together. The result is the convex outer shape the building, which resembles two plates put together in form. While many buildings have been constructed with rounded foundation, the creation of a towering circle that is actually placed to stand upon its side like a UFO or a giant wheel is in fact unprecedented in architectural achievements.
3. Dancing House (Prague, Czech Republic)
The Leaning Tower of Pisa is remarkable, but its lean was certainly not intended and apart from the lean, its architecture is normal. Conversely, the Dancing House in Prague, Czech Republic was purposely built in such a manner that it may look at first glance to be in a state of collapse. Started in 1994 and finished in 1996, the structure consists of two leaning figures that represent dancers Fred Astair, depicted by the concrete tower, and Ginger Rogers, intended to be represented by the leaning glass tower that stands on concrete legs. The combination of the two indeed looks just like a man and a women in the moment of embrace while enjoying a graceful and intimate dance.
The result of architectural collaboration between American architect Frank Gehry and Croatian architect Vlado Milunic, who recruited Gehry to work with him in fulfilling the request of Dutch company Nationale Nederlanden to build an iconic headquarters building. The building where the Ginger Rogers structure stands had been destroyed during WWII by Allied bombing, while the structure that represents Astair, which survived largely intact, was the home since childhood of Václav Havel, who later served as Czech president and commissioned a study of the site by Milunic after Milunic shared his vision.
2. Longaberger Headquarters Basket Building (Newark, Ohio)
Is it bigger than a breadbasket? Well, this turn of phrase may be less useful as a generalization of measure when the breadbasket in question is not just over a foot long, but is an entire office building. Not a full skyscraper, but a building so remarkable in scale for what it represents and as a subject, we have to take our hats off to the Longaberger Company Headquarters building in Ohio. Why? Because the entire building is not only constructed as a gigantic bread basket but it actually looks like one, built to include even a textured exterior design that replicates the look of a woven basket.
The building is fully realistic, complete with metal handles weighing nearly 150 tons that are specially heated to keep them in good condition. The 7-story building was able to accommodate 500 employees, with a intricate and remarkable authentic macroscale weaving design. The spaces in between the replicated weaves formed the windows of the remarkably distinctive building. After facing financial challenges, the company, which specializes in baskets, pottery, and other home décor relocated to a “normal” building in 2016, to the disappointment of some and the satisfaction of others who expressed a preference for working in a more practical building.
1. Fake Hills (Beihai, China)
?
The hills may be said to have eyes in horror films, but in Beihai, China, those hills that you see may definitely be filled with human eyes as people go about their business in a bizarre but awesome building complex that has been fashioned in the form of a hilly skyline. The Fake Hills represent a very bold expression of the urban planning concept of harmonizing building form and character with the surrounding environment. Extending lengthwise and paralleling the beach except for one unit at right angles, the fake hills form a silhouette of foothill like appearance that are accompanied by lush gardens interspersed with lower individual buildings in between the structures and the beach.
The main structure is unified and narrow, with a curving outline but having a straight across edge that is intended to contain numerous amenities and access points, allowing people to walk along the width of the laterally compressed hills as they undulate up and down. In December 2016, Beijing based MAD completed the first phase of the project as the fake hills get up and running toward being able to accommodate a rich diversity of uses. The towering hills are intended to reflect the hilly coastal scenery of the southern Chinese port city in which they stand, adding depth and character in a dramatic manifestation of economic development efforts compared to the more mundane form of standard apartments.
