Back in the days Queen tours weren’t run as smoothly as in the 80s. It was after this tour Queen really set about building their own crew and everything else became more professional as well. Not the case yet, and with some other unforeseen circumstances thrown into the mix, this tour was quite an interesting ride.

5 Feb 1975 - Columbus, Ohio: Not much of note happened as far as I can tell.

6 Feb 1975 - Cincinnati, Ohio: This one got cancelled because the venue was deemed unsuitable for Queen. The 30 people or so that were there did get to see the support act (Mahogany Rush) for free! There’s more to it, but I’ll get to that soon.

7 Feb 1975 - Dayton, Ohio: Not much known here.

8 Feb 1975 - Cleveland, Ohio: The first of several double gigs were Queen played two gigs on the same day. These kind of shows would tear Freddie’s voice apart so on subsequent tours they didn’t happen anymore.

9 Feb 1975 - South Bend, Indiana: As you can tell, the 6th concert in 5 days, which is very taxing on both band and roadies. Nowadays you won’t see more than two or three shows in a row.

10 Feb 1975 - Detroit, Michigan: 2nd cancelled concert this tour, unsuprisingly after doing so many in a row due to illness of one the band members (I think it was Brian). Kansas (the support act for most of the tour) played one song and then got booed of stage and that was it.

11 Feb 1975 - Toledo, Ohio: Still no day off. Apparently this concert was played to a whopping audience of 200 people! Not the first, last or only time those days Queen concerts didn’t sell very well, especially in an area where their music perhaps wasn’t played very much on the radio.

12 Feb 1975 - Cincinnati, Ohio: Apparently the earlier mentioned Cincinnati concert ended up being re-scheduled to what must have been this day. Not confirmed, but it does seem like that if you go by the stories. Of course, on such short notice not many had bought a ticket so it’s curious why they would have chosen to do that.

13 Feb 1975 - First real day off

14 Feb 1975 - Waterbury, Connecticut - Valentine's concert :P

15 Feb 1975 - Double gig in Boston. Apart three attempts, they finally get to play there! There was a party afterwards and there’s an article about that here: x

16 Feb 1975 - Double gig in New York. Four gigs in two days! The intended support act (Mahogany Rush again) couldn’t make it in time for the first gig, so they got some random young folk singer (John Quarn) to open for them for some reason 😅 It was a bit odd, apparently. 17 Feb 1975 - Trenton, New Jersey. Dunno, it happened.

18 Feb 1975 - Day off. They went clubbing in New York apparently.

19 Feb 1975 - Lewiston, Maine. As happened in the gold ol’ days the fans ended up trashing the place. The local upstanding citizens weren’t happy about it... A photo can be found at the end. Read more here: x

21 Feb 1975 - Passaic, New Jersey. Fucking Argent! They opened for Queen, got a technical problem that delayed the concert for hours, then dared to come back for an encore after being booed throughout. Queen only started playing 1 AM and finished at 2:30 AM! For the few young fans this wouldn’t have made their parents very happy. The theatre they played in was used as a porn theatre during the day btw 😁 

22 Feb 1975 - Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Ah, the famous Cow Shed in Harrisburg (dubbed the ‘State Farm Show Arena’), known for the venue were Brian May was drunk on stage after drinking with Joe Perry. You know what I’m talking about. Not a very glamorous place and dirty as well.

23 Feb 1975 - Double gig in Philly. The pic below is from the many radio interviews they did pre-gig in those days. This one’s at Radio Philadelphia 106.5 FM. Roger looks soft and cuddly. Freddie’s voice is gone by now, he would see a specialist tomorrow.

24 Feb 1975 - Washington, D.C. Freddie saw a specialist this day, who recommended him to rest his voice for three months because of nodules. This gig still needed to be played however and Freddie almost ended up missing it after being stuck in Baltimore because the train wouldn’t go any further and other means of transport weren’t available. He almost made it in time though, so the concert was only slightly delayed.

25 Feb 1975 - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Freddie sees another specialist, who only suggests a couple of weeks off (he thinks it’s just swelling, the first one was right). Not wanting to cancel half the tour again, the band only cancels a week of concerts, risking Freddie’s voice in the process. This was probably that week Roger spent wasted in a hotel room with Steven Tyler of Aerosmith as what else would he have done?

26 Feb 1975 - Kutztown, Pennsylvania. I find the name of this town quite funny, but you’ll have to be Dutch for that (it would basically mean Shit Town here).

27 Feb 1975 - Buffalo, New York

28 Feb 1975 - Toronto, Canada

2 Mar 1975 - London, Canada. It’s twice in a row cancellation for the fans in London and Toronto. Bad luck for them, Queen would never come to London in the end (unlike Toronto of course).

3 Mar 1975 - This was a day off already.

4 Mar 1975 - Davenport, Iowa.

5 Mar 1975 - La Crosse, Wisconsin. First concert in a week.

6 Mar 1975 - Madison, Wisconsin. This concert Queen played as a support act for REO Speedwagon, probably because the venue was too big for Queen to sell out at this point (most Queen gigs on this tour were played in venues up to 3000, but this gig had an audience of 8500).

7 Mar 1975 - Milwaukee, Wisconsin. For a comparison, this gig sold out, but was only played in a 1700 capacity venue.

8 Mar 1975 - Chicago, Illinois. Another sold-out show. Queen’s fortunes seem to have turned a bit.

9 Mar 1975 - St Louis, Missouri. No idea.

10 Mar 1975 - Fort Wayne, Indiana. Idem dito.

11 Mar 1975 - Another day off after playing 6 days in a row.

12 Mar 1975 - Atlanta, Georgia. Little is known.

13 Mar 1975 - Charleston, South Carolina. There are in the south by now, a place that took a bit longer to warm up to Queen and the first to drop them in the 80s.

14 Mar 1975 - Day off, marks the first time they’ve been in Miami.

15 Mar 1975 - Miami, Florida. Outdoor concert, got cancelled due to rain and rescheduled to the 17th.

17 Mar 1975 - Miami, Florida. The rescheduled concert. Quite neat they managed to reschedule it on such a short notice.

18 Mar 1975 - New Orleans, Louisiana. One of their favourite places. The concert didn’t take place in NOLA itself, but in some town called St Bernard, on the outskirts. During the 70s would frequently play in small towns in the outskirts of big cities.

19 Mar 1975 - Day off, spend in NOLA probably.

20 Mar 1975 - San Antonio, Texas. You can find an interestin fan story from this gig here: x. The place wasn’t very full during the concert. There was a Texan band opening for them, which could have both helped and harmed them in connecting with the audience.

21 Mar 1975 - Day off. By this point in the tour day offs were more frequent as the distances between gigs were getting bigger.

22 Mar 1975 - Dallas, Texas. Another concert that wasn’t sold out, evens at 2400 capacity. However, this fan got to meet the band as he went to the soundcheck: x. Read it! It shows the differences between the 70s and now at concerts really well.

23 Mar 1975 - Day off. This was originally the date of the Dallas gig.

24 Mar 1975 - Another day off.

25 Mar 1975 - Tulsa, Oklahoma. Not the first place you’d expect Queen to play.

26/27/28 Mar 1975 - All days off. On the 27th they went to see Led Zeppelin at the Forum, a place they would often play later on. This was the first time they were in LA. The band would also play spontaneously at the famous Rainbow Bar, which really impressed Roger at that point in time.

29 Mar 1975 - Santa Monica, California, double gig. For now though they were playing the smaller venues. This is the gig Deaky split his trousers. Article here: x

30 Mar 1975 - San Francisco. Initially to be played on the 28th.

1 Apr 1975 - Day off.

2 Apr 1975 - Edmonton, Canada. A really popular sold-out gig at 5000. Played at a sport centre.

3 Apr 1975 - Calgary, Canada. Just another gig.

4 Apr 1975 - Day off.

5 Apr 1975 - Vancouver, Canada. With the Japan Tour ahead some more gigs get cancelled to save Freddie’s voice. In total 12 concerts would be cancelled during the whole tour, the most after the previous tour.

6 Apr 1975 - Seattle, Washington. The last concert of this tour. Queen and Kansas would do an extensive set together (maybe not the best idea for Freddie, but he survived!)

7 Apr 1975 - Portland, Oregon. Cancelled. The band would go off to Hawaii instead for a short family holiday.

This Sirocco Golf Club Wedding in Calgary was such a beautiful day! The weather can be very unpredictable in Calgary in September but Lucie and Joel got one of the warmest days of the summer. This was perfect for everyone to enjoy the beautiful grounds at Sirroco, drinking cocktails and playing lawn games in the afternoon sun. 

Their Story

Lucie and Joel planned an outdoor ceremony overlooking the green hills. Joel crafted the most beautiful arbor, with flowers hanging behind then as they said their vows. After the ceremony the bridal party all jumped in golf carts and we formed a little convoy down to the old wooden barn for portraits. The afternoon sun lit up the fields as we took photos of this fun group of friends. 

We all then headed back to the reception where they were welcomed by all of their family and friends. Everyone watched the sun set behind the head table as we listened to beautiful speeches and ate amazing food. The fun continued through the night with some impressive first dances which led into a pretty wild dance floor! We had such a lovely day celebrating with this wonderful group of people and we hope you enjoy a look into their beautiful day.

*Just a personal tidbit about what July 7th means to me, and some personal observations about what happens in this city for the Calgary Stampede.  I wrote it because I wanted to, and desbite my best efforts to get it done yesterday, I was just flat out too busy.  But it was fun to finish this evening, and great to reminisce*

Yesterday was my 10th wedding anniversary.  

Yup, we got Married on 7/7/7, a whole decade ago. You would think that booking a year in advance would be enough time to secure a venue for a wedding, but not for that date, ohhhh no  There were a lot of people apparently who had the Lucky Sevens in their mind for a wedding, and there is an extra added busyness to this time of year here in Calgary, that I will explain… but So, SO many venues were already booked, and as it turned out, one of the hotels had a small banquet room available, and a garden restaurant that they could convert into a space for a ceremony.  Incidentally, this was also the place that my Husbands parents had their reception (The Glenmore Inn off Ogden road).  I mean how weird is that right?  Most of the other places I inquired were either booked or didn’t call me back, and suddenly we’re celebrating in the same place my Husband’s parents did 27 years prior.

Now I have to explain something about Calgary, for anyone who doesn’t know.  Every year since 1912, the City hosts the Calgary Stampede (the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth), and the first part of July in this city, is Bananas.  It’s a world-class rodeo, and an amazing midway, and it’s absolute insanity.   It’s a 10-day Party is what it is. This pretty much sums it up;

-  Booze.  Booze everywhere.  Even at breakfast.  Bars open earlier and stay open longer and the C-trains and busses run 24 hours.  Not uncommon to see someone drinking a beer with breakfast… or maybe that’s the crowd I run in?  If not beer then there’s Bailey’s for the coffee.   -  Free Pancake breakfasts!  Every single day.  All over the city.  If you don’t mind waiting in lines, you can get a free breakfast all 10 days, and more than one if you desire!  And if you’re lucky enough to get invited personally to one, it can be a small intimate affair, with amazing live music and delicious pancake fluffiness, and bacon and sausage and eggs and all the good stuff.  (Hubs company throws one every year and it is that type of awesomeness that I got to enjoy yesterday morning all while listening to an amazing live band) -  And it’s not just breakfast.  There is a lot of lunches and BBQ dinners too.  And yes, MOST are Free (although it might take some sleuthing to find them since the breakfasts are usually where it’s at) -  This city vibrates.  It VIBRATES. There is no other way to describe it. I have lived here all my life, and have always been around for the Stampede, and the energy is Palpable. -  You wanna hear country music?  It’s everywhere.  Doesn’t matter if a store will play light rock or easy listening the rest of the year, for Stampede, it’s always Country, country, country… (even today we went for lunch at a smoked meat place KNOWN for Blues music, and they were playing Country) -  Oh and all the storefronts are painted with cowboy and rodeo themed cartoons. And there are bales of hay everywhere (inside and out). -  The Calgary Stampede Parade.  That shinning jewel of a Parade that starts off the whole event.  I remember many, MANY happy years in my youth attending, and in 105 years, it has never rained during it.  No joke.  We are ridiculously proud, and a little but smug about this fact. -  Which doesn’t mean it’s never rained during Stampede, because this is usually one of our hottest times of the entire year (even yesterday it as 32 degrees Celsius), and the Thunderstorm threat is eminent.  There have been many whoppers over the years, making the rodeo and chucks a complete mud-fest.  And hail. Hail is the most prevalent here in July. -  Some of the biggest names in music come to this party every year, and if they aren’t preforming in the Saddledome (home of the Calgary Flames), they are preforming at the Coca-Cola stage.  How do I describe this stage… well, that’s exactly what it is, a fucking Stage like in a school!  It’s on the north end of the midway, and anyone can walk up and watch whoever is preforming, for FREE!  I mean that’s crazy.  It’s stupid and packed and I have never bothered with it because I would freak in a crowd like that, but it’s still awesome. -  And the Coca-Cola stage isn’t even the end of it.  Every year at Nashville North (a GIANT tent of a bar set up in the middle of the Midway), Country Artists will preform concerts at night (again, for FREE), and it is something to experience.  In my opinion, it is more fun than the Coke Stage because at least you can get a drink and go to the back to mingle with friends and listen to music and not have to be in the thick of the crowd. -  The midway itself!  Rides! and Beer gardens! and WAY overpriced food and drinks, and some of the craziest culinary concoctions you would ever think about.  Deep fried coke, yup.  Grasshoppers in a popsicle, sure.  Scorpions on a pizza, why not?  A lot of people brag about having the balls to try this crazy shit, but seriously?  Most of that crap is beyond me.  This year features the worlds hottest pizza (which is apparently just loaded with Carolina Reaper peppers), a pizza covered with slow roasted rabbit and vegetables, and deep-fried chicken feet. Yeah… I wouldn’t go near any of those with a 10-foot pole, but I will be all over the BBQ burgers and the corndogs and mac n cheese and poutine. -  But not just that at the Midway… there’s animals in the Agrium barn to see, and a trade show in the Big-Four, and a brand-new spot over the river for the Indian Village to honor the natives to this wonderful country and celebrate their heritage, where you can get the best fried bread (Bannock) you will ever eat in your life!   -  The Midway and the Stampede are packed with events (hell the whole city is packed with events), and to see and do everything, would take more time than you would think.  There is just SO much going on.  It is an organizing marvel all the stuff they put on in 10 days. -  We all have a section of our closet for Stampede wear.  It’s plaid and cowboy boots and hats and I am not kidding! We drag this shit out once a year and we wear that little part of our wardrobe anytime we go Stampeding.  And not just that.  Anywhere you go, and I do mean anywhere, people who are normally in uniform, are allowed to wear their stampede gear to work for the entire duration of the stampede (they are even encouraged to).  Everyone who works in grocery stores, and banks, and restaurants and you name it, will all be in this get up for work.  Even cops will be seen wearing cowboy hats. -  A lot of people have to work regular hours during Stampede, but there are more businesses than you would think that pretty much shut down for 10 days.  But for every bit of hard work put in over the 10 days, there is 10 times the amount of partying.  And although there are a lot of people who detest the Stampede, or just hate how busy this city gets (like our friends from Saskatchewan who leave the city every year to avoid it), most Calgarians are game to take part and have a bit of fun. -  And I haven’t even mentioned the Rodeo and Chuckwagon races.   The Calgary Stampede gives away over a million dollars in prize money, making it one of the biggest Rodeo’s in the world.  There is a lot of controversy surrounding Rodeo’s of course, but the Stampede is part of Calgary’s Heritage and History, and I love every second of it, any time I get to go to one or both of the events.  My parents took me as kids, and we will take ours too when they are a little older.  It’s a blast. That’s what this city does for Stampede. We “Cowboy up”.

But I digress… We realized on the first anniversary of our marriage, that since the Stampede will always fall after the first Thursday in July, so our Anniversary will always, ALWAYS AND FOREVER, be during the Stampede, and there is a shit ton of things going on and this city is FILLED to the brim with people.

Going to a restaurant anywhere near a major road at dinner time is impossible.  Hotels are booked solid (which is why we were so surprised that we were still able to book our wedding and reserve some rooms, even though we did it a fuckin YEAR in advance).  Not only that, all of our Stampede loving baby-sitter options, are usually too busy with Stampede stuff to babysit, so we can go out and enjoy an Anniversary dinner by ourselves.  We have taken the kids with us before, just so we could treat ourselves to a dinner out. (We were lucky enough my Mom was free yesterday, so we enjoyed a blissful kid-free day).

So back to the planning; we manage to book the photographer I wanted, who was somehow otherwise not engaged for that ridiculous date (even though he was booked the rest of the weekends for the entire summer), and his shit is gorgeous (he even did both my sister and brother in-law’s weddings afterwards too because our pics were SO beautiful).  We managed to book a Justice of the Peace to preform the vows (we had to phone around because they were all busy and luckily she had an opening, although it had to be an hour before what we had in mind for a time), and we got married in a sun-lit, inside garden terrace, with about 65 people there to help us celebrate.  Despite microphone issues, that were comically remedied by the JP tapping the mic on her chin, it was short and sweet and perfect, and we were surprised by everyone blowing bubbles at us, as we walked back down the aisle as husband and wife.

There is no way to described how fun the reception was, after a long, hot, couple of hours after the ceremony to take pictures.  The reception was the icing on the cake for our day.  We even had a couple of people from the 250+ guest wedding, in the giant banquet hall on the end of the hotel, come to party with us.  Our DJ, was AMAZING.  He knew what drew us all to the Dance floor, and he kept us there with that theme.  By the end of the night, it was non-stop AC/DC, with hubs and I, and handful of our closest friends, singing along at the top of our lungs, jumping up and down, doing air-guitars and mimicking Angus Young’s famous move, until the hotel staff had to ask the DJ to shut it down.  Twice.

We stumbled back up to our hotel room but were intercepted by some of our drunk friends on the way, and ended up going to have a drink in one of their rooms.  One of our buddies climbed into the cabinet on top of the old-school television (yeah not a flat screen) and asked the whole room “guess who’s on TV” with a drunken laugh, and that is forever burned into my memory.  

By the time we got to our room, it was almost 3 in the morning, and we were both so tired we could barely keep our eyes open, and yet an older family friend to the Hubs, had ordered a bottle of Champagne to be delivered to our room, so it was there and chilled and waiting for us.  

So, of course we figured we had to pop it to celebrate.  I think we got a few sips in, sitting on the bed and watching TV, when we both unceremoniously passed out from exhaustion.

I woke up at one point to a very dark room.  The TV must have turned itself off, and as soon as I got up to walk to the bathroom I hit the pedestal thing for the champagne, and knocked the mostly full bottle and melted ice all over the carpet.  I grabbed some towels from the bathroom after and threw them over the soaked wet floor, still in the dark, and crawled right back into bed and fell fast asleep.  When I woke up in the morning, I was shocked to see that a HUGE area of the carpet was a darker shade than rest, because it was SOAKED, and my feeble attempt at throwing two towels on it, did nothing.  Who knew they put that much ice in those Champagne things anyway?

So, we had to get up early the next morning and meet my parents for breakfast in the hotel restaurant, which I am pretty sure we were late for, and I remember a distinct discussion about Polkaroo from the Polka Dot Door (which is a ridiculously Canadian childhood thing), to which even the next table form us chimed in in their reminiscences.

That was ten year ago. Where does ten years go?   Two kids later and time seems to have sped up. Anyone with children will know that.  Years doesn’t even seem like years when you add ankle-biters into the mix.  

So, we celebrated a decade of Marriage yesterday, and although our day didn’t go as we had initially planned, it was wonderful and fantastic and a future fond memory.  

There were a lot of other fun and interesting things that happened on our wedding day of course, but I am sure they are only amusing to me, just like this ramble.  But my emotional ass wrote this little bit of crap, because yesterday was a milestone, and I love the Calgary Stampede.

5 Tips for Finding Perfect Wedding Reception Halls and Venues

Disc Jockeys or just DJs are perhaps the most experienced and knowledgeable when it comes to wedding reception arrangements, decorations, and all the other details related to halls and venues. Music is a top at the list of every bride and groom, and DJ’s are thus an essential part of any wedding reception. Experienced DJ’s who have played on a lot of weddings can be a good source of getting reception hall suggestions as they get to see the action from all angles. Here are some tips from DJs-

1. Wedding reception venue size- When shopping for reception halls, the most important factor to consider is the size of the venue- number of people it can comfortable seat, size of the dance-floor, space for cake-table and card or gift-table, if there is enough room for the DJ to set up. A number of people may be comfortably seated in the reception hall but how much space does it leave for the dance-floor?

2. Climate control inside and weather forecast outside- Climate control is an important feature to look for in the wedding reception hall. If it is too warm or chilly, it might be uncomfortable for the guests. So ensure there’s proper heating and air conditioning. Keep the weather in mind if you are planning to have an outdoor reception and always have a back-up plan in case there’s a possibility of weather change. If there’s a risk of rain, lightning or windstorm, your DJ may not want to set up their expensive equipment outdoors.

3. Location of the hall from the actual wedding ceremony- This is an important consideration for all couples going to get married. Many couples today are opting for the same location for both the wedding ceremony and reception in order to save money and also make it more convenient for the guests and themselves. One may come across a reception hall with a beautiful design and view and decide to have both the ceremony and party at the same venue albeit different locations within it. However if you want to go the traditional way by having the wedding ceremony at a church or chapel and reception at another venue, then keep in mind the distance between the two venues and how your guests will reach them. You could either have your minister or wedding officiate announce the next venue or people can use GPS or follow in groups to reach the destination.

4. Time between the ceremony and the reception This is especially important for those having both the ceremony and party at the same venue. Make sure you do not leave your guests on their own for too long, and if so, make proper arrangements for that. If you leave your guests to amuse themselves with a bar for too long, some might start hard partying without you as you would want them to be dancing and cheering and not be distracted when you have your first dance, cut the cake or toss the bouquet. Some guests may also start leaving, so it is a good idea to have a great DJ that keeps the momentum going with popular dances and keeps your guests entertained while they wait for your arrival.

5. Smoking or non-smoking? Most indoor spaces these days are non-smoking areas especially the public facilities and reception halls unless they have a bar and lounge inside. This may not be a big issue, yet one should discuss with the venue coordinator to ensure that there is no fire in case someone lights up a smoke In outdoor reception areas, it is advisable to have one or two ‘smoking only’ areas on the ground so the non-smokers are not disturbed.

While Troupe artistique Phoenix (Huayun) de Montréal celebrates Chinese New Year in music and dance on Jan. 22 at Place des Arts. There’s more contemporary dance in Martin Messier’s multidisciplinary Corps Mort at La Chapelle, Jan. 23-27 and at Usine C in work by Andrew Tay and Alicia Grant, while the Bouge D’Ici dance festival presents two solo contemporary shows, Sexpectations and A David Lynch Wet Dream, Jan. 18-21, and the So You Think That Was Dance? Showcase at Mainline Theatre on Jan. 20. The Phi Centre screens new indie films (and also Boogie Nights on Jan. 25), the Virtual Reality Garden animation series and Not Short on Talent short films installation, and presents documentary When Worlds Collide at the Canadian Centre for Architecture on Jan. 26. On Saturday opt for French trip-hop producer Wax Tailor at Metropolis, the operatic synthpop of Austra at Théatre Fairmount, Cherry Glazerr’s great guitar-rock at Bar Le Ritz P.D.B., the incredible talents of Avec le Soleil Sortant de sa Bouche and Xarah Dion at La Sala Rossa, or high-energy electro producer Markus Schulz at New City Gas. Tom Chaplin (of Keane) brings his solo stylings to Cabaret Lion D’or on Monday, Jan. 23. Local sounds prevail in experimental ways at Jeunesse Cosmique at La Sala Rossa on Tuesday night. The Toronto Symphony Orchestra visits Montréal’s Maison symphonique at Place des Arts on Jan. 25. On Thursday, Jan. 26, Tokyo Police Club and Charly Bliss rock La Sala Rossa, while country music singer-songwriter Tim Hicks and the James Barker Band come to Théâtre Corona, Hannah Georgas and Aliocha bring musical bliss to Cabaret Lion D’or and TONSTARTSSBANDHT and Gashrat get real and loud at Bar Le Ritz P.D.B.
