So I just started reading A Court of Thorns and Roses (audiobook), and am I the only one who is wondering if the author did any research into poor subsistence living or the lives of peasants? Because wow, I know Feyre’s family used to be rich, but if that was 8 years ago and y’all are poor as dirt now, somehow in the intervening period you might have learned:
- trap lines in the winter are far superior to active hunting. It burns less calories, you can use it with fish and land animals, and it will save you from frostbite bc instead of sitting in a blind for hours, you can go to your lines at certain times and head home, or drive animals toward your lines.
- buying flower seeds - or any garden seeds - is a suckers game when you’re poor. You only really need to buy seeds once!! Once you harvest, you let stuff ‘go to seed’ and then you collect it and store it for the winter, often trading seeds with your neighbours.
- they let things actively RUN OUT before doing anything about it. That’s absolutely buckwild if you’ve ever been poor — when you’re poor, you know how to make a meal stretch, and you DO IT.
- there is hunting, but no gathering?? This family has not stored any veg for winter, but neither do they go gather mushrooms, rosehips, roots, tubers, nuts, or even fucking bark?? What happened to their cottage garden?? Was it just flowers?! Were they that rich that they don’t understand that a garden produces food? Did they close their eyes as they walked past all their peasant neighbours and their gardens? Bc that’s maybe the wildest thing I’ve seen from both a historical and a ‘grew up so close to dirt poor you couldn’t tell the difference’ perspective!
- She left a whole ass Giant wolf carcass when her family is starving. Nah nah nah no that is the universe smiling on you when you’re subsistence! You will make a travois or somehow find a way to tie that to you and drag it along - that’s double the food, and possibly more money, because you could live off the wolf (which I assume does not taste great) and sell off some of the deer (which is delicious).
- she didn’t at least do a basic clean of her kill out in the woods?! She did not tan the hides?! Y’all, you do not want to be cleaning any kill on the kitchen table. Why? Because cleaning involves removing the intestines and stomach. That means shit and piss and food digestion in different stages, and the gases produced. You do that *outside*, typically at least close to where you made your kill, because you don’t want to have to have any…spills, and because it makes things a bit lighter to carry. Butchering? For sure do it on a table, but cleaning is an outdoor chore. Also, tanning a hide is not just skinning a creature! It’s scraping all the membranes off it, stretching and drying it, and curing the skin - sometimes with smoke, but often with a pretty gross solution (often including brain oil, and historically, I believe urine and/or feces, and other things with the right chemical components). It’s not a simple or quick task!
- soups, pottages, stews, with dried lentils, beans, or peas would have been the staple meals (depending on the climate and environment, but it feels fairly British thus far). Just having roasted venison (def not the best way to eat venison just from taste alone) would likely be a very very rare occurrence, because, as noted earlier, they’re so poor they would need to make it stretch. You would cure it or dry it or turn it into sausage. You would use it sparingly within a meal, not to serve as the whole meal.
- the market. If you were poor, you would likely be a stranger to spices, but not to salt. Salt is deeply necessary to survive in that period, as it’s one of the only ways of safely processing and storing meat with any longevity. And? If you got the money that they did while being as poor and as starving as they were? The first thing you would do — even if you were the most stupid rich person before then — is stock up your stores of dry goods! Flour, salt, honey, dried beans/peas/lentils, vegetables that store - onions, squashes, potatoes, root vegetables like carrots. It’s straight up Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs here - you will not give a shit about a new cloak before you give a shit about saying your hunger. They are said to be ‘starving’. Sorting out your survival comes before sorting out your fashion.
Anyways, this has been me for channel 4, reporting on anachronisms and misrepresentations in fantasy fiction. More news at 10.
#which is not to say I’m not enjoying the book#though I am glad I got past the poor people stuff#because tell me you’ve never been a peasant without telling me you’ve never been a peasant#I thought a lot of this was common sense but then a lot of people don’t need sense this common I guess#but it’s a fun book so far#acotar#a court of thorns and roses

🍠 harvesting sweet potatoes 🍠

this was my second year growing potatoes, but my first year growing sweet potatoes specifically. when i grew normie potatoes, i ended up with less than what i put in the ground... that's how bad it turned out. while researching why i did so badly, i learned sweet potatoes grow totes differently so i decided i would try those this year.
i am very happy i did.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/6d45e9585ae968b1e4ddd089b7c0432b/afaa911f9f43db6c-61/s540x810/e41691d0a24e24b8ce741b430671fd232f817c70.jpg)

i started off by bringing my teeny tiny harvest basket assuming i did horribly, but after half of the first plant i had to go grab my big boi harvest crate my dad made me. i also found 4 baby carrots that i grew last year during my harvest. ignore those.
prior to harvesting, i turned to the internet out of habit to see what needed to be done. sadly, the internet had varying degrees of how to handle both harvesting and curing potatoes. then i remembered farmer mama used to grow these so i hit her up for the true knowledge. i shall put it here for y'all.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/1a0c43a338d7a9504bf16feac8b6d63d/afaa911f9f43db6c-d8/s540x810/6a4c5da9f84e855448d54eeca6078c9479c6440d.jpg)

there's no need to wait until first frost, and actually it's prolly not ideal if you wait. it's going to be first frost pretty soonTM so right now is just fine. it's easier to diggie dig if you trim back all the vines first. i did prune back the vines and leaves the deer left for me, and i tossed them in as my first layer of compost for the garlic bed (garlic post soon, i'm running behind on planting them...)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/a9a3bb8490f1492ae0d4665bc60c4c77/afaa911f9f43db6c-7f/s540x810/03d9b987740c14477b3764bde2fe60fbbb47c078.jpg)
now i can grab on to the neck of the plant and rip it up. totally not morbid to phrase it that way. to say i squeed with joy when i saw large and bountiful potatoes this time is an understatement. hubs was prepping the perennial flower area to plant those plants and he thought i was getting attacked by yellowjackets again. my yipee and my panic screams are the same so i don't blame him.
for digging, since this was in my tall raised bed i just used my arms and hands and dug around. i had my shovel handy, but my acoustic self prefers to use hands for everything, and also because the shovel could pierce the skin of the potatoes. which isn't horrible, but an annoyance and an extra worry when curing so just not worth imo. the potatoes didn't go further than 8 inches below the soil, so no reason to keep digging. you can also tell when the roots get smaller and smaller. i also learned that for sweet potatoes like 90% of the taters are right under that neck, so also no real reason to dig around too much except if you want to find those baby outliers.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/9b1f15c0981d9b67f3472d6e3bf00995/afaa911f9f43db6c-c6/s540x810/106cfd5538722a07018bb678f54af142cb80d167.jpg)
so incredibly happy with this harvest 😍❤️🍠
the purpose of me growing these was because, well, why not, but also because i want to offer sweet potato slips at the farmers market next april. i offered only a few this year because i just didn't know what would happen and if i wanted someone else to grow it and see how theirs turned out to compare. why purple? well, why normie???? purple is so much prettier and i'm actually going to focus on a lot of purple produce in 2025 lmao. but i digress.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/8bb414cd802ca83646c533eae29b8943/afaa911f9f43db6c-15/s540x810/f01056e9c0ccafbf82c73304f75e9f3eb8d0800c.jpg)

ok so i hit the tumblr photo limit just from talking about harvesting these gorgeous purple divas therefore i shall do a 2nd post about the curing stage. spoiler alert: i am curing the baby tubers because market slips next year and i washed the big chonkas in my outdoor sink and boiled them immediately.
boiling was a mistake. good news is i learned the kitchen would look pretty with purple floors 🫠 and that if you clean up purple potato water on kitchen floor with clorox bleach that it turns the purple color blue 🫠 i love science.
since i got too overexcited i boiled too much. i saved enough in the fridge to make a sweet potato pie later this week, ate some for dinner, and then froze the rest in ziploc bags. i have a feeling i'll be making multiple purple sweet potato pies this season because why the hell not.
don't worry i'll have photos of the pie when i make it. hehe.
ok chores real quick then on to the next post about curing the potatoes, very important.

hi acti, shits pretty bleak in the U.S. at the moment. I'm very proud of my folks for voting 93 and 80% majority for blue but it's not enough. We're taking this time to just rest and try to think of ways to brace for what's coming. Especially with FDA and health inspection rollbacks in place. My family's majority plant-based save for my mom. Idk if u remember or if u had gotten it, but I wrote an anonymous message a long time ago asking if there was a way to transition my mom from backyard egg vegetarianism with rescue hens to veganism, especially since I don't think we can trust animal products soon. I really want to start a micro farm, (like a freight hydroponics microfarm or something similar) if possible because soon I won't trust the soil from big box stores as I can't sterilize it enough nor grow year round and its gonna be a rough 4 years and up. I'm just looking for hobbies to help feed my community if anything.
(Im so sorry if this seems like the beginning manifesto of an online recipe) but Do you happen to have any sources on vegan alternatives to beekeeping? Or any sources on sustainable indoor hydroponic farming that could feed several people? Or if you think its best to keep rescue chickens for eggs and transition my mom to plant-based sources for her own safety now? Thank u in advance
I want to preface this by saying I don't really have any personal experience with this, so my answer here is based solely on research. It will depend on the level of space you have in your home, but even if you have a couple of spare rooms to use, I think you'll need to manage your expectations a little bit.
It is unlikely that you'll be able to become self-sufficient unless you have access to a plot of land. What you'll be growing will supplement what you're buying, but it won't replace it. Communal allotments could be an option, but that will depend heavily on where you are and how available they are, as well. Even then, the quantity you'll produce on a small allotment will not be enough to feed several people.
That said, you can grow quite a lot indoors or on a small plot of land, and you'll certainly be able to provide a real boost of fresh fruit and veg, either to community kitchens or to your family. I don't think that having animal inputs would really provide much of a benefit since you'd also have to rely on buying or growing feed, so my recommendation would be to just start with trying to supplement what you're buying now, with easy options to grow at home.
As for resources, here is highly rated book on vegetable gardening, if you do have access to an outdoor space. For indoor, this is supposed to be a good entry level book, here is a more extensive text focused on soiless growing, and here is one focused on equipment. There are also a couple of active subreddits on this, but I think that these four combined should provide a really good foundation to get you going - but it is apparently a lot of trial and error, and you will need to set some money aside for an initial investment into your equipment.
I think that it's a great idea so start to look towards growing your own food, but don't get too wrapped up in the self-sufficiency idea. Reach out to local growers and grower communities, make connections at farmers markets, see if you can do any work in community gardens to learn. Community is what is going to get people through this, and making those connections now would be wise.
Edit: Check this advice from a knowledgeable anon as well.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Estimate Construction Costs for a New Home
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/1798f5c99715270e63a65c9c17bd2c94/3b0811e4f85d36db-7d/s540x810/c7fc05f505b601af3c93f5876438ed2d927cd513.jpg)
Accurately estimating construction costs is essential when planning to build your dream home. Understanding and calculating these expenses helps in making informed financial decisions and avoiding unexpected surprises. Here’s a detailed, step-by-step guide on how to perform a thorough construction cost estimate for your new home.
If You Need more Information about cost Estimations, visit this Website -> https://uniqueestimations.com/new-york-construction-estimating-services/
1. Understand the Types of Construction Cost Estimates
There are different methods for estimating costs depending on the stage of your construction project:
Preliminary Estimate: An early-stage estimate based on basic information.
Detailed Estimate: Involves itemized costs for materials, labor, permits, and more.
Bid Estimate: Prepared by contractors and includes detailed pricing for project execution.
Selecting the right construction cost estimator for your project depends on your project’s complexity and accuracy needs.
2. Define the Scope of Your Project
To start estimating, it’s important to clearly outline:
Square Footage: Determine the size of the home.
Design Complexity: Architectural style and special features add complexity and cost.
Quality of Materials: Decide between budget, standard, or high-end finishes.
Having a well-defined project scope ensures that your cost estimation in construction is accurate and reliable.
3. Calculate Material Costs
Material costs often constitute a significant portion of new construction estimating costs. Factors to consider include:
Foundation Materials: Concrete, steel reinforcements, and formwork.
Structural Components: Wood, steel, or concrete framing.
Exterior Finishes: Siding, roofing materials, and insulation.
Interior Finishes: Flooring, drywall, cabinetry, and paint.
Consulting local suppliers and utilizing a construction cost estimator can help you get current pricing.
4. Account for Labor Costs
Labor expenses can vary widely based on your location, the size of your project, and the expertise required. Common roles involved include:
General Contractors: Manage the entire construction project.
Specialized Contractors: Focus on plumbing, electrical work, and HVAC installation.
Skilled Laborers: Carpenters, masons, and roofers.
Make sure to factor in wages, benefits, and potential overtime when estimating construction costs for labor.
5. Include Permits and Legal Fees
Local regulations often require permits for various aspects of home construction, including:
Building permits
Plumbing and electrical permits
Environmental impact assessments
Research the requirements in your area and budget accordingly to avoid delays or fines.
6. Don’t Forget About Utility and Site Preparation Costs
These expenses cover tasks that prepare the land for construction and ensure the home is connected to essential services:
Site Clearing and Excavation: Removing vegetation and leveling the site.
Utility Hookups: Connecting water, sewer, gas, and electricity to the property.
Driveway and Landscaping: Installing access roads and outdoor spaces.
Including these in your construction estimating costs ensures you capture the full scope of expenses.
7. Estimate Plumbing and Electrical Costs
Specialty work like plumbing and electrical installations requires detailed estimates. Utilize a new construction plumbing cost estimator to calculate the expenses for:
Plumbing: Pipes, fittings, and fixtures for kitchens, bathrooms, and outdoor areas.
Electrical Systems: Wiring, outlets, switches, and lighting installations.
These components are critical to home functionality and should be accurately budgeted.
8. Factor in Contingency Costs
Unexpected expenses often arise during construction. To mitigate financial strain, allocate:
5% to 15% of Total Budget: For unanticipated changes or issues.
Price Fluctuations: For materials and labor due to market conditions.
Including a contingency buffer is essential for realistic cost estimation in construction.
9. Use Construction Cost Estimating Tools
Modern technology makes it easier to get accurate estimates with tools such as:
Online Construction Estimators: Provide quick preliminary cost insights.
Software Programs: Offer detailed and customizable reports.
Professional Services: Hiring a professional estimator can add precision and expertise.
Selecting the right tool depends on your project’s complexity and your need for accuracy.
10. Review and Adjust Your Estimate Regularly
As your project progresses, costs may change. Continuously updating your estimate ensures that your budget remains accurate and relevant. Factors to reassess include:
Changes in material prices
Design adjustments
Project delays
Regular reviews help maintain control over your estimating construction costs and prevent budget overruns.
Final Thoughts
Accurately estimating construction costs for a new home requires careful planning, detailed calculations, and regular monitoring. By following these steps, you can confidently manage your budget and make informed decisions throughout the construction process.

I'm sorry nobody knows what a tumblr job is
if you aren't missing a comma or a "but" there. thank u i love u
if i had unlimited characters and thought people would bother reading context associated with a poll, (i am pretty sure they usually do not) and also had some foresight about some of the specific things people would interpret differently than i intended, here's what this would have looked like:
[begin post]
[begin poll]
which of these listed tumblr job types is yours?
retail, grocery, consumer-facing service and sales (excludes call centers and food service)
food service (includes restaurants, cafes, coffee shops, bars, cafeterias, food trucks, commercial kitchens, food kitchens, etc; cooking + serving + hosting)
teacher, professor, tutor, teaching assistant, childcare provider, but not educational administrator, if you do another kind of education read the rest of the options first because one of them might be a better fit
engineer, developer, technical designer, data or computer scientist, not including technical writers
parks and wildlife, outdoor research, animal care (including animal boarding and veterinary care), animal keeping (such as zoos or aquariums), animal husbandry, farming, ranching, environmental conservation, gardener or plant nursery worker (but not florist), field archaelogist, equine therapist, outdoor camp counselor if you work with and have knowledge around plants and/or animals
librarian, archivist, docent, tour guide, curator, patron-facing researcher, consultant historian or sociologist, community educator at a cultural or knowledge (probably nonprofit) institution (including but not limited to historical reenactors); reception or guest services related to any of the previous, excepting food service, which is the food service option
writer - content, technical, proposal, marketing, fiction, nonfiction, educational, research, including editing, but has to be actively working and receiving pay from a company, an organization, and/or clients/commissioners including publications/publishers, even if income is inconsistent or not received at regular intervals. does not include captioning or transcription. translators use your best judgment
artist, illustrator, graphic designer, but has to be actively working and receiving pay from a company, an organization, clients/commissioners including publications and galleries, may include visual marketing but does NOT include ad sales, also does not include video editing unless you do like, speed paints or show off your art in videos
patient healthcare, caregiving, and advocacy. does not include animal care, pharmaceutical research or dispensing, or medical coding/billing
you are not currently working as / do not currently have any of the Tumblr Jobs listed above
[end poll]
a "Tumblr Job" is decided based on the following criteria, which is based on my own dashboard/Tumblr experiences, and tumblr searches:
either many Tumblr users have or have had that job, OR, one to a few high-profile Tumblr users have or have had that job
posts are made about that job, either about the day-to-day work itself (positive or negative), as an appeal to authority ("librarian here!"), or about the concept and/or vibes of the job or having that job
posts are reblogged about that job, and reach an audience of people who do not have that job; posts go viral about that job, even
Tumblr users might aspire to have that job, or be studying toward it
it might require a high level of interest and/or personal investment with limited positions available, OR, it might be a very common job in the world
the job is NOT one that many Tumblr users would perhaps complain and/or rant and/or criticize about other people having
the job is NOT one commonly associated with things Tumblr tends to skew away from, like industries known to contribute to climate change or jobs that tend to be associated with ultra high earners with wealth inequality in the same industry (editing to plug my other poll that 6 & 7 apply to that nobody is taking)
a "Tumblr Job" is NOT just a job anybody on tumblr might have or even a job most people or many people on tumblr might have. it's not even a job that is necessarily common on tumblr (common on tumblr != common tumblr job), that's something i am interested in finding out via the poll.
just because tumblr users you know also have your job doesn't mean it Is a tumblr job. and just because your job type isn't listed doesn't mean it is Not a tumblr job. there are only 9 job hodgepodge types here. there are more jobs in the world than this and there are more tumblr jobs on tumblr than this. these are also not and are not intended to be standard industry classifications. they are grouped by tumblr vibes, not necessarily by job role or duties.
if you do not have a job at this time, you do not currently right now have one of the listed tumblr jobs. being unemployed or being a student, even if you once had one of these jobs or are studying to obtain one of these jobs, are not jobs for the purpose of this poll.
the purpose of the poll is to see how many respondents actually have and are doing these specific jobs that i have identified as "tumblr jobs". nothing more and nothing less!
[end post]
but nobody is gonna fucking read all that & tumblr polls have character limits. if the poll was as specific as i wanted it to be it would not have however many thousands of votes it currently has. curse of my autisms <3
#poll#also i specifically went with ''knowledge'' hospitality because ''''knowledge worker'' hospitality and tourism'' wouldn't fit#''knowledge worker'' is an actual phrase people say and it applies to the group of people i was trying to describe#the population i am trying to get at is more narrow than people who work at cultural organizations which someone in the tags suggested.#bc that would include like religious institutions and performing arts and stuff.#for ''engineer'' which is another criticism area it is not that deep i assumed the software developers and technicians that followed me#would know to select engineer. and engineer being on its own as the shortest option was funny#having thought about it since getting a ton of notes asking where IT is. IT is a common industry on tumblr#but it is too broad to be A Tumblr Industry#so i actually don't regret not explicitly calling it out#even though the description above in this post WAS my initial intention

This guide will explore popular projects, benefits, and tips to help you create the home of your dreams.
Understanding Home Improvement
Home improvement encompasses a wide range of activities aimed at enhancing the functionality, aesthetics, and value of a home. These projects can vary from simple cosmetic changes, such as painting walls or updating fixtures, to extensive renovations like kitchen remodels or room additions. The goals of home improvement often include:
Increasing property value: Many homeowners invest in improvements to boost their home's marketability and resale value.
Enhancing comfort and functionality: Renovations can make spaces more livable and tailored to your needs.
Updating aesthetics: Refreshing the look of your home can create a more inviting atmosphere.
Improving energy efficiency: Upgrades can lead to lower utility bills and a reduced environmental footprint.
Popular Home Improvement ProjectsAs we move into 2025, certain home improvement trends are gaining momentum. Here are some of the most popular projects that homeowners are undertaking:
Kitchen Remodels: The kitchen remains the heart of the home, and renovations in this space often yield high returns on investment (ROI). Popular upgrades include modernizing cabinets, installing energy-efficient appliances, and adding stylish countertops made from materials like quartz or granite.
Bathroom Renovations: Bathrooms are another focal point for improvements. Homeowners are increasingly opting for walk-in showers, updated fixtures, and neutral tiles that create a spa-like ambiance. Minor bathroom upgrades can significantly enhance both comfort and value.
Outdoor Living Spaces: Creating functional outdoor areas is a growing trend. Features like patios, decks, outdoor kitchens, and fire pits allow homeowners to enjoy their yards year-round while adding significant value to their properties.
Energy Efficiency Upgrades: With rising energy costs, many homeowners are investing in energy-efficient windows, insulation, and solar panels. These upgrades not only reduce monthly bills but also appeal to environmentally conscious buyers.
Curb Appeal Enhancements: First impressions matter. Simple improvements such as landscaping, fresh paint for the front door, or new siding can dramatically enhance your home's exterior appeal.
Benefits of Home ImprovementInvesting in home improvement offers numerous advantages:
Increased Comfort: Renovating outdated spaces can create a more comfortable living environment. Open floor plans or multifunctional rooms allow for better use of space.
Enhanced Property Value: Strategic improvements can lead to a higher resale value. Projects that focus on kitchens and bathrooms typically offer the best ROI.
Personal Satisfaction: There’s immense satisfaction in creating a space that reflects your style and meets your needs. A well-designed home can improve your overall quality of life.
Healthier Living Environment: Upgrading materials (like low-VOC paints) and improving ventilation can lead to better indoor air quality and overall health benefits.
Tips for Successful Home ImprovementTo ensure your home improvement projects are successful, consider these tips:
Plan Ahead: Before starting any project, outline your goals and budget. Consider hiring professionals for larger renovations to ensure quality work.
Research Trends: Stay informed about current design trends and materials that suit your style while being functional. For instance, biophilic design—incorporating natural elements—can enhance both aesthetics and well-being.
Prioritize Projects Based on ROI: Focus on renovations that offer the best return on investment. Kitchen and bathroom remodels tend to be at the top of this list.
