Costa meets a young gardening couple who have created a habitat haven and productive paradise four storeys up.
City living offers many conveniences – but also many challenges for keen gardeners.
In busy Edgecliffe, right in the heart of Sydney, a rooftop garden overlooking a busy train line is the only space available to Philip Georgiou and Ian Belgiorno-Zegna, but they’ve still managed to carve out a productive, potted palace to enjoy outdoors.
“We’re really lucky to have this space,” says Phil.
The total area is 350 square metres – and 200 square metres of that is the roof garden. Some is paved and some has decking, but all the plants – from tiny succulents to olive trees – are in pots.
“I’ll use the herbs from here – we use the rosemary nearly every night,” says Ian. “Phil got me onto the native trees and I’m eating lilly-pilly berries now.”
Their Eureka lemon (Citrus limon cv.) tree looks really healthy. “We had lavender underneath, but we took it out and it’s really taken off,” says Ian. Costa agrees that’s a good move because lemons don’t like any competition around their shallow roots.
Costa spots a tumbler compost bin: “Because you can’t put in on the ground, this is really appropriate for this space,” he says. Turns out it was a gift from Phil to Ian for his birthday!
They’ve also joined the ShareWaste scheme after seeing in on Gardening Australia. They receive donations of other people’s garden scraps to make compost to use on their garden.
Costa checks out the compost and says moisture wise it’s perfect – he advises mixing it into the soil after clearing a crop or spreading it around crops, making sure to cover with mulch to stop it drying out and killing the useful microbes in the compost.
“Then that compost will perform all those feeding and water-holding roles.”
Ian and Phil are growing peas, silverbeet, carrots, rocket, pineapples, herbs succulents, cycads, cacti and plenty more.
They have done a lot of work to the roof area, which was all decking when they moved in. Some of the challenges include having to get an engineer’s report to check that the roof would sustain the weight of their many pots – the large cube planters weigh more than a tonne by the time they’re full of wet potting mix, and there are 13 of these alone, plus dozens of others.
Another issue was drainage – they had to make sure all the water would drain into one corner.
The pair loves native plants and have nearly 20 grevilleas, plus callistemon, eucalyptus and banksia. There’s also lots of edible produce that they use in the kitchen. Phil’s favourite is Grevillea rhyolitica ‘Deua Flame’, which has a pretty, pendulous red flower and bright green leaves. He loves them because they flower all year around and attract loads of bees.
They ask Costa about how best to prune a bottlebrush tree to reduce the size without hacking it too much. Costa advises trimming back the flower spikes after flowering. “That will keep it nice and dense,” he says. Cutting any dieback from the centre will also encourage more light in, and hence more shoots.
The row of larger native plants offers the garden some privacy from neighbouring buildings and a nice view from the sitting room.
Ian makes a rosemary sugar syrup to use in cocktails, so Costa presents him with a lemon myrtle bush (Backhousia citriodora) that he’ll be able to use for lemon-flavoured drinks, too.

Be Familiar with the Versatility of Decking
Decking is a chic and adaptable addition to any outdoor area, offering a practical and beautiful place to dine, entertain, or unwind. Decking improves the area's overall beauty and usability, whether it's in a public park, a business space, or a personal backyard. Decking's capacity to turn unused areas into hospitable outdoor living spaces is one of its main benefits. Decking in Sydney can be customised to fit various preferences, price ranges, and environmental concerns thanks to the wide range of materials available, such as PVC, composite boards, and natural timber. Composite decking solutions are durable and low maintenance, making them perfect for busy households or high-traffic locations, while timber decking offers a timeless, cosy appearance that combines wonderfully with the natural surroundings.
Decking is also highly customisable, allowing for unique designs that cater to specific needs and preferences. From multi-level decks and built-in seating to railings and integrated lighting, the possibilities are endless. These custom features not only enhance the deck’s functionality but also add a personal touch that reflects the homeowner’s style.
In addition to its visual appeal, decking adds value to properties by increasing usable space and boosting curb appeal. A well-maintained deck can serve as an attractive focal point for potential buyers, making it a worthwhile investment for homeowners. Furthermore, decking is relatively quick and straightforward to install compared to other outdoor structures, ensuring minimal disruption during the construction process.
Whether creating a cozy space for family gatherings a stylish venue for entertaining guests or planning for roof restoration in Sydney, decking is a practical and elegant solution that enhances any outdoor area.

Stainless Steel And Outdoor Handrails: Enhancing Value and Style for Your Property
Stainless steel and outdoor handrails are key features in modern design, blending practicality with a unique visual appeal. These handrails are not just functional safety elements; they also improve the overall look of any outdoor area. In Sydney, where design styles are constantly changing, stainless steel handrails are popular for their strength, easy upkeep, and ability to fit well in modern and classic environments. This blog looks at how stainless steel outdoor handrails can increase the value and style of your property.
The Durability Advantage
Stainless steel outdoor handrails are an excellent choice for homeowners looking for long-lasting materials. Here is why:
Resistant to Tough Conditions:
Stainless steel doesn't rust, corrode or wear away quickly, which is essential concerning the weather in Australia, whether hot or rainy and the nearby coast's salt.
Low Maintenance:
The intense and challenging nature of stainless steel means these handrails don’t need much care, saving you from having to fix or replace them often.
Good Investment:
Their long life saves money and makes your home more valuable, as buyers like homes with strong, high-quality features.
Visual Attraction: Enhancing Elegance and Modern Style
Stainless steel outdoor handrails are famous for their smooth, modern look, making them ideal for improving your outdoor areas. Here’s how they boost both appearance and usefulness:
Flexible Design:
Whether a simple balcony, a detailed staircase, or a contemporary deck, stainless steel handrails fit well with all architectural designs due to their neat lines and shiny surfaces.
Adjustable Finishes:
From dull to shiny or brushed finishes, stainless steel can be customised to suit your design tastes, enabling you to create a distinctive look.
Combination with Other Materials:
Stainless steel’s flexibility allows it to be paired with wood or glass, providing numerous design options for the perfect outdoor mix of style and function.
Boosting Property Value with Functional Elegance
Stainless steel outdoor handrails do more than just make your property look better; they also offer advantages that increase its overall worth. Here’s why they matter:
Attracting Buyers and Renters:
Their modern look and strong build draw in potential buyers or renters who appreciate both good looks and durability in a property.
Improving Marketability:
Real estate professionals know that well-kept outdoor features are essential. High-quality handrails can help a property stand out in a crowded market, possibly raising its selling price.
Enhancing Safety and Style:
Stainless steel handrails brighten open air by making it safer and adding elegance to the outdoor living experience.
Investing in stainless steel handrails is a significant decision in which beauty and function give the property a perfect appearance with value.
Conclusions
Outdoor stainless steel handrails offer advantages in terms of practicality and design, which will add value and enhance your home. Their strength gives them long-lasting advantages, requiring little maintenance. The clean, modern style they add to your outdoor space makes it look more elegant and attractive, making them an excellent choice for different design tastes. By choosing stainless steel handrails and outdoor handrails, you're making your property safer, more functional and appealing to buyers, which is a smart choice for homeowners and investors. Ultimately, these handrails are a good investment in looks and usefulness, turning any outdoor area into a beautiful and lasting feature.
