One of my most favorite movies is "Love Letter" (1995) in which the story takes the viewer from the big metropolitan Kobe to a small town in Hokkaido named Otaru connected by a set of lost love letters. I remembered how bleak, lonely and sad the landscape of this northern town was in the film. Years later on the train going from Sapporo passing by this very same coastline I looked out the train window and saw again that solitude and loneliness ... yet I felt it was so beautiful such a sad scenery. And I thought only people living in such a stoic, and quiet place would really know how to love another person to the very end and would never leave.
