Hello! First, I wanted to say thank you for your post about updating software and such. I really appreciated your perspective as someone with ADHD. The way you described your experiences with software frustration was IDENTICAL to my experience, so your post made a lot of sense to me.
Second, (and I hope my question isn't bothering you lol) would you mind explaining why it's important to update/adopt the new software? Like, why isn't there an option that doesn't involve constantly adopting new things? I understand why they'd need to fix stuff like functional bugs/make it compatible with new tech, but is it really necessary to change the user side of things as well?
Sorry if those are stupid questions or they're A Lot for a tumblr rando to ask, I'd just really like to understand because I think it would make it easier to get myself to adopt new stuff if I understand why it's necessary, and the other folks I know that know about computers don't really seem to understand the experience.
Thank you so much again for sharing your wisdom!!
A huge part of it is changing technologies and changing norms; I brought up Windows 8 in that other post and Win8 is a *great* example of user experience changing to match hardware, just in a situation that was an enormous mismatch with the market.
Win8's much-beloathed tiles came about because Microsoft seemed to be anticipating a massive pivot to tablet PCs in nearly all applications. The welcome screen was designed to be friendly to people who were using handheld touchscreens who could tap through various options, and it was meant to require more scrolling and less use of a keyboard.
But most people who the operating system went out to *didn't* have touchscreen tablets or laptops, they had a desktop computer with a mouse and a keyboard.
When that was released, it was Microsoft attempting to keep up with (or anticipate) market trends - they wanted something that was like "the iPad for Microsoft" so Windows 8 was meant to go with Microsoft Surface tablets.
We spent the first month of Win8's launch making it look like Windows 7 for our customers.
You can see the same thing with the centered taskbar on Windows 11; that's very clearly supposed to mimic the dock on apple computers (only you can't pin it anywhere but the bottom of the screen, which sucks).
Some of the visual changes are just trends and various companies trying to keep up with one another.
With software like Adobe I think it's probably based on customer data. The tool layout and the menu dropdowns are likely based on what people are actually looking for, and change based on what other tools people are using. That's likely true for most programs you use - the menu bar at the top of the screen in Word is populated with the options that people use the most; if a function you used to click on all the time is now buried, there's a possibility that people use it less these days for any number of reasons. (I'm currently being driven mildly insane by Teams moving the "attach file" button under a "more" menu instead of as an icon next to the "send message" button, and what this tells me is either that more users are putting emojis in their messages than attachments, or microsoft WANTS people to put more emojis than messages in their attachments).
But focusing on the operating system, since that's the big one:
The thing about OSs is that you interact with them so frequently that any little change seems massive and you get REALLY frustrated when you have to deal with that, but version-to-version most OSs don't change all that much visually and they also don't get released all that frequently. I've been working with windows machines for twelve years and in that time the only OSs that Microsoft has released were 8, 10, and 11. That's only about one OS every four years, which just is not that many. There was a big visual change in the interface between 7 and 8 (and 8 and 8.1, which is more of a 'panicked backing away' than a full release), but otherwise, realistically, Windows 11 still looks a lot like XP.
The second one is a screenshot of my actual computer. The only change I've made to the display is to pin the taskbar to the left side instead of keeping it centered and to fuck around a bit with the colors in the display customization. I haven't added any plugins or tools to get it to look different.
This is actually a pretty good demonstration of things changing based on user behavior too - XP didn't come with a search field in the task bar or the start menu, but later versions of Windows OSs did, because users had gotten used to searching things more in their phones and browsers, so then they learned to search things on their computers.
There are definitely nefarious reasons that software manufacturers change their interfaces. Microsoft has included ads in home versions of their OS and pushed searches through the Microsoft store since Windows 10, as one example. That's shitty and I think it's worthwhile to find the time to shut that down (and to kill various assistants and background tools and stop a lot of stuff that runs at startup).
But if you didn't have any changes, you wouldn't have any changes. I think it's handy to have a search field in the taskbar. I find "settings" (which is newer than control panel) easier to navigate than "control panel." Some of the stuff that got added over time is *good* from a user perspective - you can see that there's a little stopwatch pinned at the bottom of my screen; that's a tool I use daily that wasn't included in previous versions of the OS. I'm glad it got added, even if I'm kind of bummed that my Windows OS doesn't come with Spider Solitaire anymore.
One thing that's helpful to think about when considering software is that nobody *wants* to make clunky, unusable software. People want their software to run well, with few problems, and they want users to like it so that they don't call corporate and kick up a fuss.
When you see these kinds of changes to the user experience, it often reflects something that *you* may not want, but that is desirable to a *LOT* of other people. The primary example I can think of here is trackpad scrolling direction; at some point it became common for trackpads to scroll in the opposite direction that they used to; now the default direction is the one that feels wrong to me, because I grew up scrolling with a mouse, not a screen. People who grew up scrolling on a screen seem to feel that the new direction is a lot more intuitive, so it's the default. Thankfully, that's a setting that's easy to change, so it's a change that I make every time I come across it, but the change was made for a sensible reason, even if that reason was opaque to me at the time I stumbled across it and continues to irritate me to this day.
I don't know. I don't want to defend Windows all that much here because I fucking hate Microsoft and definitely prefer using Linux when I'm not at work or using programs that I don't have on Linux. But the thing is that you'll see changes with Linux releases as well.
I wouldn't mind finding a tool that made my desktop look 100% like Windows 95, that would be fun. But we'd probably all be really frustrated if there hadn't been any interface improvements changes since MS-DOS (and people have DEFINITELY been complaining about UX changes at least since then).
Like, I talk about this in terms of backward compatibility sometimes. A lot of people are frustrated that their old computers can't run new software well, and that new computers use so many resources. But the flipside of that is that pretty much nobody wants mobile internet to work the way that it did in 2004 or computers to act the way they did in 1984.
Like. People don't think about it much these days but the "windows" of the Windows Operating system represented a massive change to how people interacted with their computers that plenty of people hated and found unintuitive.
(also take some time to think about the little changes that have happened that you've appreciated or maybe didn't even notice. I used to hate the squiggly line under misspelled words but now I see the utility. Predictive text seems like new technology to me but it's really handy for a lot of people. Right clicking is a UX innovation. Sometimes you have to take the centered task bar in exchange for the built-in timer deck; sometimes you have to lose color-coded files in exchange for a right click.)

School rant, sorry its kinda rambly. TW for school shootings, bomb threats, the whole Apalachee High situation.
Nothing like last week's news to make me so, so glad I’m not in a classroom anymore.
I taught in Georgia and South Carolina for 13 years. Even did an observation at Apalachee during grad school, since it was a relatively quick drive from Athens/UGA - you know, back in the distant past of 15 years ago when teacher training had actual rigor and requirements in this part of the country. I even taught at the psychoeducational alternative school that Barrow county bussed their most extreme EBD kids to. So yeah, this hit close to home for me.
My financial situation basically changed overnight last year, when Dr. Mr. Camucia finally finished his fellowship and became a full-fledged attending. This let me quit my job right in time for South Carolina to implement its policy where teachers would have to submit every. single. thing. that would be used throughout the year. Every book, website, lesson plan, PowerPoint - all would have to be submitted within the first two weeks for administration to approve, and parents would have the right to veto or challenge anything they want. You know, in addition to the million other things teachers already do, and crap I had to do handling the yearbook.
(You can only imagine what a policy like this would be like for me, teaching a class called Media Art where both teaching Photoshop and media literacy/criticism were in my standards 🙃)
But things, particularly where I was teaching, were already Bad. And, in fact, getting Worse. This was a school where we already had an entire year of bomb threats well before Covid (including one with an actual failed bomb! My fanfic Footnotes was borne of the insanity of that year!) - that basically showed the exact protocol of what happens when something like this happens at a school. We did all the things everyone claims would stop this sort of thing -
-They added metal detectors (which basically flagged almost everyone, causing 1st period to basically lose 20 minutes a day since so many kids had to get wanded down every morning). They gave up on those after about a week.
-They added more cops, more cameras, sealed off more doors, did all the things, but the bomb threats, kids bringing in weapons, etc. just kept happening.
-They even (years later) added a security system very similar to the one at Apalachee - except, oh, wait - my classroom, and like six others were just… not hooked up to the system. They took my old school panic button, said they’d fix it "later" and give me one of them fancy lanyards with the panic switch, and that just never happened. Three of the classrooms didn’t even have the fire alarm work for their room! They straight up missed fire drills!
My last year there, there was a huge fight in the cafeteria. Like the kind that makes the news, not the kind that happen almost every day that just get posted to tiktok or whatever (I was on bus line afternoon duty, and frequently had kids compliment me on how bored I’d look breaking up those kinds of fights).
But this was a 10 or so person brawl that ended up with multiple student injuries, blood all over the floor, a whole school lockdown, and a teacher breaking their leg trying to hold back the crowd watching/recording/cheering it on. I taught two of the main participants - they were suspended, then "expelled," then mysteriously just showed back up a month later after some sort of appeal to the board of ed. I was told to let them make up any work they missed during their month off, which they both referred to like it was a vacation (would it surprise anyone to know these were football players?).
This isn’t isolated. Ask almost any teacher and they’ll have multiple accounts of kids just… not facing consequences when they get written up, or not caring about parent calls (because the parent doesn’t care either), or seeing ISS and OSS as vacations since they just get to sleep and play with their phones. I don’t think people who haven’t been in a school realize just what it’s like now. And I don’t know what the environment was like at Apalachee, but I know that the facility where the most troubled kids for that specific part of Georgia was shut down last year - I know this because I worked there.
Apparently all of the GNETS (Georgia Network of Educational and Therapeutic and Support) schools in Georgia were shut down last year for having these kids not mainstreamed enough. I can say from having worked there as an art teacher that the system was not perfect, but that these kids did not belong in a mainstream classroom. I was stabbed, kicked, spat on, had literal shit thrown at me - and I was one of the better liked teachers! But at least there were smaller class sizes and much better ratios of social workers and psychologists working with the kids and their families. We had access to resources that regular public schools are just stretched too thin to pursue, things like getting families off the street, clothes and food for students' whole families, etc. So these kids were just sent back to their home schools for their presumably already overwhelmed regular Special Ed departments to deal with.
Apparently in Barrow County, where Apalachee is, all of the kids who were at the alternative school are sent to just one school per level, plus taking on additional kids from other, smaller counties in the area. I’m sure caseload numbers went way up, and the behaviors being dealt with got a whole lot more extreme in just one semester.
This kid should have had so many red flags. There already were, according to the FBI! But as far as schools, there should have been a dozen counselors, administrators, etc. who had worked on a fat ol BIP (behavior intervention plan) about this kid that every teacher got before he even stepped foot into their classroom. It’s not uncommon to get kids where you know for a damn fact you’re not supposed to let them go to the bathroom unaccompanied, or have to check in with guidance every morning, or who have to get their backpack searched every morning (or aren’t allowed to have a backpack at all! I had a few of those!). But that apparently just… didn’t happen.
So, yeah. Every part of this whole situation has just made my skin crawl. Those kids and those teachers should be alive. Those kids who got shot and will be traumatized for life should have never had that happen to them. The cult of gun worship in this country is sickening, and the more we gut public education, the more teachers will just throw their hands up and give up like I did - this isn’t going to get better without drastic, dramatic change. And I really just don’t see it happening in this country.
I miss teaching. I miss my kids. I was, by all accounts, pretty damn good at it. But with things the way they are, and the sheer insane number of things we expect teachers to be able to do while also blaming them for everything, I'm not going back.

Naked Roommate — Pass the Loofah (Trouble in Mind)
Naked Roommate struts the robot funk, chanting deadpan rants about the absurdities of modern life against a percolating backdrop of drum machine, synth, guitar and sax. The band, out of San Francisco, has both sharpened and thickened its sound since 2020’s Do the Duvet, splicing the post-punk funk of ESG, A Certain Ratio and Maximum Joy to the horn-squalling mayhem of the Contortions and even Madness.
Originally a duo of Bay Area mainstay Andy Jordan (The Cuts, the Time Flys, Famous Mammals, Non Plus Temps, the World) and Amber Sermeno (also The World and Famous Mammals), Naked Roommate expanded to include Blues Lawyer’s Mig Zamora and Alejandra Alcala for the debut. This second full-length incorporates all that plus a double-sax line-up of Geoff Saba and Jeanne Oss.
That’s six people grooving in sync in the warm ska-dub sway of “Broken Whisper,” six people popping and locking in the taut, Shopping-esque “Successful Friend.” A larger ensemble enables thicker, more layered sounds. Though discipline reigns in machine-tooled beats, there’s a cushiony give as well. Where Do the Duvet sketched out synth-funk with a blippy colored pencil, Pass the Loofah fills in the lines with rich, saturated comic-book ink.
The single “Bus” best integrates lush textures with skeletal rhythms. Popcorn pizzicato bounces off undulating foundations of synth as Amber Sermeno chants dispassionately about the charms of public transportation. She’s surrounded on all sides by pulsating, strobe-flashing sounds, a three-dimensional echo chamber of interlocking percussive sounds. Later sing-song-y “Yob,” captures the band’s two women in a gossipy interchange about male encounters. When the spoken word finishes, Sermeno and Alcala sing airily about romantic ideals (“I want a yob”) and unmet longings (“sausages,” “six packs,” “a guy who would shut up and listen”), against a synth/bass/drum machine background that is both feather-light and irresistibly propulsive.
Pass the Loofah is a pastel-colored room filled with soap bubbles, a Teletubby dream sequence with a commanding dance beat. It feels slightly unreal but also utterly physical, a wisp of a candy-scented introspection that you can move your ass to.

prepositions
so uhm . ..
time prepositions
relative space prepositions
absolute space prepositions
resturant/cities/countries etc
other
I had to exclude some things cause It's already long and I spent ages on it. So there will probably be a part two
This is probably easier to learn through context. tbh. it's so easy to mess up. all my homies hate translating prepositions.
also idk how to differentiate everything so there may be some adverbs or other classes here.
time prepositions
before -> før (don't mix up with for)
after -> etter
now -> now
Jeg var her før deg -> I was here before you / I was here before you were here
while -> mens (Booklanguage) -> medan (newnorwegian)
til -> till / until
frem til -> until
space prepositions
her -> here
foran -> in front of (like french devant I think)
bak -> behind
under -> under
over -> over / above
(i)mellom -> (in) between
inni -> within / inside / in
ved siden av -> next to
ved -> by. f.ex Jeg sitter ved bålet -> I'm sitting by the campfire.
nær -> near. (this is changed depending on object gender: nær / nært)
nærme -> close. f.ex Vi er nærme -> We're close. (to our destination / it / whatever was talked about).
langt unna -> far away
langt imellom -> far between
Det [verb] langt mellom [plural object pronoun / plural noun] -> [noun/pronoun] [verb] far apart. f.ex: Det var langt mellom oss -> We were far apart
Til [direction] for -> to [direction] of. f.ex: Bilen er til venstre for bygningen -> the car is to the left of the building. (can include right/left, south/west/north/east)
[direction] for -> [direction] of. (same as above)
oppå -> on top of / on. f.ex: Mobilen din er oppå boksen -> your phone is on top of the box
[x] [er] langt unna [y] -> [x] [is] far away from [y]. f.ex: Jeg er langt unna deg -> I'm far away from you
absolute space
x [er] på [defined noun] -> on / on top of. f.ex: Mobilen din er på bakken -> your phone is on the ground
på [place]-> in/at/on [place]. f.ex: Jeg er på bussen -> I'm on the bus, Bilen er på parkeringsplassen -> the car is at the parking lot
hjemme -> at home. Jeg er hjemme -> I am at home (like Russian дома I think).
Det er [x] -> There is [x]. f.ex: Det er en bil på parkeringsplassen -> There is a car in the parking lot. (equivalent to french il y a, I think)
resturant/cities/countries etc:
ved bordet -> at the table. Jeg sitter ved bordet og venter på maten -> I sit at the table and wait for the food. (note the verb tense is weird)

book of matches with (you guessed it) echo and dec :]
echo pokes at the bunched-up scrap paper with a stick, pushing it back into the hastily stacked logs. declan drops a handful of twigs onto it and then drops down onto the grass next to them, sticking himself to their side. "'m surprised that we aren't doing this inside."
"bu-urning down the ho-ouse- my pen-chant fo-or inadvisable indoor fi-ires is ver-ry li-imited," declan says, exaggerating his frown and digging an elbow into their side. echo huffs and elbows him back. "marshma-allows are be-etter out here, any-way!"
the bag of supplies is a little out of arms reach; echo leans with the stick and catches the handle, tugging the fabric back towards them and plopping it down in front of them. declan reaches in and fishes out a matchbook, paper shaded in garish yellow with cursive black text. echo squints and tilts their head. "what places are you going to that give out matchbooks as advertising?"
"the go-od kind!"
"they need a better color scheme."
"yea-ah yeah yeah-"
he flips it open and picks out a match between his claws, striking it against the box and holding it up. echo watches the arc of light as he leans forward and tosses it into the paper. the fire takes nicely. tension knits into their posture and ebbs away as declan presses further into their side, hooking the bag with one finger and dragging it into their laps.
echo tears their gaze away from the burgeoning fire and puts their attention to tearing open the marshmallow bag with their teeth, instead. declan steals the stick they were poking the fire with earlier and pulls two marshmallows on, smacking them in the cheek with them. "bastard- you're gonna get moss on the s'mores, and then where would we be?"
"yo-our moss tas-tes normal!"
"of course you would know," echo drawls. they steal the stick while declan glares at them indignantly, biting both the marshmallows off before he gets a chance to roast them. he responds in kind by lunging and biting their forearm, tugging off a sprig of moss with his teeth. "dec! gross!"
declan swallows, grinning right after. echo pinches his cheek with one hand and smacks him between the ears with the stick. "if there wasn't an open fire right there-"
"gu-uess we just ha-ave to make mo-oss s'mores!"
"and i'll be making fur s'mores-"
"gro-oss!"
"exactly!"

Why are rain frogs so round? What's /inside/ of them around such an itty bitty skeleton?
So it turns out this is a really interesting question.
The first thing we must be aware of is that rainfrogs as we see them in videos of them squeaking are not quite the same shape as they are when at rest:
[x]
But you are quite right, they are very round. This is exemplified by the skeletal photo you refer to:
[X]
So what are we seeing?
Well, firstly, note that the body cavity in these frogs actually envelops the femurs, such that only the tibiofibula (fused in frogs) and the tarsals and metatarsals are outside the body. The arms are quite similarly enveloped, but a bit of the humerus does extend outside the body cavity too. This predisposes them to a rounder body shape.
Next, note the ilia - the U-shaped bone in the pelvic region. These in some breviceptid frogs are synostotically fused with the sacrum - that is to say, they are bound by bone-based connections to the bow-shaped vertebra at their tips. This whole joint seems to be quite smooth, and as a consequence, the back of the frog is quite smooth. The other thing we can see here is that the urostyle (i.e. the frog version of a coccyx) juts quite far beyond the ischium and pubis. This extends the body cavity beyond the hips. Note also that the pelvic girdle seems to be largely below the spine, rather than the typical position for frogs behind it and continuous with it. This makes the legs sit below the spine, rather than at its end, enhnacing the vertical roundness of the animal.
Next, let’s talk some soft tissue. Now, I’m not as familiar with soft-tissue in frogs as I am their skeletons, so you’ll have to bear with me a bit (rawr). Beddard (1908!!) studied the soft tissue of Breviceps verrucosus Rapp 1842. It seems that the majority of the body of these frogs is actually muscle. Beddard noted that muscles join the leg at the knee that extend into the body cavity, such that the inclusion of the thigh in the body cavity is further accentuated by musculature. The rectus abdominalis muscle is unusually large, extending from the lower abdomen up and around the sides of the body. Indeed, this large size appears to be the pattern with all of the major muscles, though in the throat the typical arrangement of large and small muscles is somewhat reversed. On the lateral side of the head, there is a substance that is not muscle, but appears to be loose tissue in which sits what is apparently the thymus gland.
There is a very large gap between the end of the urostyle and the anus (one fifth of the total length of the frog), in which there are almost no muscles, save for the one surrounding the lower cloaca. On either side of this area, between the posterior-most muscles of the thigh, lie two large ‘lymph-hearts’, as described by Beddard. These are between one quarter and one third of the total length of the frog. A further lypmh-sac sits between these lymph-hearts and the skin of the femoral region, and they are thus probably analogous to the femoral lymph-sacs of other frogs.
I find it interesting that Beddard (1908) did not mention any glandular formations in the dorsal region. As is evidence from many images (see below), these frogs are able to secrete a white, sticky, noxious substance from their skin (which they actually have to use during amplexus, as the male is too small relative to the female to mount her properly, and so he sticks himself to her with his glandular glue… kinky).
[x]
These glands do not apparently take up a great deal of the cutaneous tissue, and so I suppose are of no consequence to the size of the frog, especially relative to its enormous muscles.
The diet of these frogs consists almost exclusively of hymenopterans and isopterans (ants and termites). Neither of these insect groups are particularly fatty, so it is little surprise that their bodies appear to contain no large fat deposits - fatty bodies extend from the gonads up to the lungs and heart, but these comprise only a tiny fraction of the frog’s mass, and don’t contribute to the round shape. Instead, their bodies are extremely muscular, allowing them to be adept burrowers, ideal for their fossorial lifestyle.
So TL;DR: rain frogs are little balls of muscle (maybe the largest muscle mass relative to body mass of any vertebrate? science just doesn’t know).
