This is a somewhat fun one from TS.

“She’s not like that,” Vahn said, because he thought that Osawa should know. “Not really. That isn’t who she is.”

It shouldn’t matter what this new water loa thought of Kanna, but for some reason, in that moment, Vahn couldn’t stand another person thinking she was a monster. Maybe it was because he could feel the Saint Trials looming. Maybe it was because he wanted them, he wanted that power, but he knew they would eat him alive and Kanna would be left alone. 

Osawa raised his brow. “You misunderstood me,” he said. “She could have killed him, easily. But she didn’t. Most would have.”

Vahn’s smirk tasted stale. “You learn fast, Prospect.”

“Decuni,” Osawa corrected, though there was no ego in it.

Vahn followed the cut of his jacket. The guy must be good. Very good, to rise so quickly when he was willing to stand in front of Vahn and tell him that he didn’t think Kanna was death incarnate, that maybe she was a person and not just a weapon. Those who gave more than a spare thought to Kanna existing as anything else weren’t useful to Velinius.

“Very fast.”

You get Osawa. You are so, so lucky.

Osawa Tando is one the primary characters in Shadow's Prey.

Osawa grew up in the floating cities of Icaunus. He's a water loa and one of the soldiers, but unlike the other three, he doesn't actually have any particularly "special" rank or title. He's just Osawa.

And he's fine with it.

Osawa in even-keeled and unflappable and Osawa knows who he is. Osawa knows his strengths, knows his weaknesses, and doesn't really find it necessary to prove anything to anyone. Most underestimate him because he isn't "showy," but when it comes down to it, Osawa is possibly the most skilled character in SP aside from Kanna. In fact, there are some pretty surprising things that Osawa is the absolute best at, you just might have to pay close attention to figure out what they are.

“I’ll admit, this isn’t where I imagined I would be,” Osawa said with a short laugh. 

He tilted his head back, looked to the bare rafters above him. If he listened closely, he could hear the footsteps of the people that moved in the house, shifting from one room to the next. Like tides, they had gathered. 

“But,” he added, “what I had imagined was far worse.”

“What’s worse than being run to ground at the end of the world?” Kanna asked, the bite in her tone holding the smallest note of uncertainty.

“Dying on a hill you don’t believe in.”
