83. A Vulcan youth being introduced to human music as part of their studies:
"Father, why is this human singing about their failed relationship with another person and hoping that it gives them hell, and why is the human mythological afterlife judgment location being referenced in this way?"
An exchange between two Vulcan teens away from adult supervision:
"Listen to this human music known as Rock and Roll. It is strangely compelling in spite of lacking in logic." "My parents do not consider it a prudent use of my time to include in my studies. However, it is intriguing do you perhaps have further examples of this human genre of music?"
A Vulcan family living on Earth:
"I have been invited to play an instrument in a garage band; Orrin tells me I have mad skills." The Vulcan teen guitarist in question rocking their skills on the electric guitar without any of the usual head banging just impassively and calmly adjusting their fingers to pick out a complex series of chords, and the Vulcan youth just goes along with it because while humans are strange illogical creatures, he finds the mathematical arrangements of the notes aesthetically pleasing when they manage to be in tune.
I have another post regarding this idea from Cal that I'll include at some point...

Madame Putiphar Readalong. Book One, Chapter Ten:
Were it not for the open ending this chapter could have been a short story like those in Champavert. A young woman is stabbed by her father’s henchman who thinks he’s murdering her lover instead (as commanded by her father) Once the mistake is discovered, the father is distraught, not because he has much love for his daughter but because it frustrates his negotiations to marry her off.

Romeo and Juliet Act Five Header illustrated by Kenny Meadows, engraved by John Orrin Smith. From the Victorian Illustrated Shakespeare Archive
We begin with more Cockermouth characterization which allows Borel to explain us the different ways in which English domain of Ireland was exerted. The autonomous since 1690 Irish Parliament was now under English control (whatever the intervened parliament decided had to be approved by the English Crown)
Both the Irish clergy and the rebels are fervently against Cockermouth (Cockermouth is so extreme and baroque in his power abuse that he had proposed to implement mandatory castration of catholic priests)(and the rebels that had fallen in his power during the Kerry uprisings had been treated with the utmost cruelty)(Cockermouth is here to rip the country’s culture off and obliterate its morale via gruesome violence)(Borel tells us this castration ordeal had been implemented before, and Cockermouth was merely trying to bring it back in 1723)(all I could find was this: “In 1719 a law was put forward which included the penalty of castration for unregistered priests. It was rejected by the British authorities. A 1723 bill was to require all Catholic bishops and clergy who were members of orders to leave the country, along with secular priests who did not take an oath of abjuration.”-> source )
But after that intro about exerting and holding power in colonies, the narrative violently swerves and we dive into the preparations for Cockermouth’s birthday party.
The only people adhering to the celebrations are the paupers (earlier the local workers payed their compulsory respects to their lord), who come expressly to their lands to pay liege homage to the kitchen. The description of the charity by the ladies of the castle is vaguely idealized. Anne and Deborah are like the good fairies feeding and dressing the mendicants. We are told they are dressed elegantly but are humble and kind and generous. The people are naturally grateful and happy at being fed and treated kindly. A full fledged popular party breaks out, bagpipes are implemented, the minstrels sing traditional songs and improvise some new ones in their hostesses honor. There is no irony in the treatment of charity by Borel. He makes that comment on the women’s elegance among the smoky surroundings and the dirtiness/raggedness/nudity of their guests, but calls it a beautiful example. However, this paragraph comes right after the one about Cockermouth violence so we cannot help but put them in contrast. How do the local poor people felt at being forced to get their food at the house of an infamous torturer, (who also usurped their land of its resources) willingly entering his house to beg for food because its a celebration day. It is very revealing of their desperation, even if Borel doesn’t highlight and has only positive words for Debby and Anne.
By nightfall, the comme il faut guests start arriving to the Castle. They are received by the Lord and Lady. She, “(...) of an interesting beauty even through a forest of fandangle (...) ” (translation -and footnotes- here!! ) I like Borel dismissing luxury as being in detriment of beauty (takes us back to his proclaimed love of poverty in the prologue for the Rhapsodies) So of course Debby, who is Petrus’ ideal wears no fussy jewels -but she has other reasons besides aesthetic ones to avoid attention. As soon as she can, she tries to get lost into the crowd.
But she is forced to abandon her hiding place to meet her husband to-be. She keeps her lips tightly shut in a smile, curtseying to her suitor, making herself into a pleasant doll, a nodding Coppelia, playing her part hoping it would make it all pass as quickly as possible.
And we hear about her suitor. Through him Borel sketches his own prototypical libertine in an 18 th c novel, but there is no glamour, no appeal to the figure. He is a man of leisure who is a professional rapist (the peasant girls he thinks himself so irresistible to, flee on his sight like Daphne from Apollo) He is also ridden with venereal diseases (the peasant girls run away from him like from the Plague, he is the masculine version of the prostitutes in Félicien Rops’ paintings, a skeleton hiding behind a grinning mask, but in his case even the mask is blood-curdling). His family is trying to prevent any grave scandal by marrying him off (by giving him Deborah) but of course he has no intention of changing his ways and is merely glad that his future wife is good looking and that her money would enable him future conquests because “Money is the sinews of war.”
Deborah was aware of his reputation, but even if she hadn’t been she would have been instinctively repelled because his demeanour made him as repelling to women as poison.
As once as his disgusting attentions were over, she fled.
Leaving lights in her window when leaving her room to make it seem occupied, she ran to meet Patrick. We return to Cockermouth who is not enjoying himself, he is too anxious checking his watch, thinking of his plot to have any fun. At nine he meets Chris at the courtyard (and the next scene between them is once again a theatrical dialogue)
Thinking Debby was still in her room, they lock the gate expecting to keep her trapped inside. Chris complains about the lack of stars, the visibility is very low and he can’t see ahead. Low visibility notwithstanding, they still station themselves in a turret and Chris aims and shoots at a figure walking by bellow. They descend, and Cockermouth watches as Chris humiliates his victim.
Chris makes sure to bring up that one time Patrick refused to drink with him, and jokes on how he wouldn’t drink with him whom is now disembowelling him. To which lord Cockermouth feels compelled to add the disembowelling is done on his behalf. (to which Chris adds, rather insolently, on half his behalf) Cockermouth grows impatient at his henchman’s childish sadism (he is compared to Harlequin, we already discussed this but they are farce and commedia coded). As he would never be able to murder him by hitting him with the butt of his rifle only, the Lord hands him the feudal sword to make the task swifter. (and I bet Chris would have been extremely pleased by being bestowed that honor, touching the blade of his beloved Lord, but he is having too much fun stabbing away to remark on that fact. Cockermouth asks for his sword to be cleaned before it being returned to him)
After the carnage, Cockermouth nonchalantly returns to the banquet. He invites his guests to follow him to the dining room. They all seat for the feast. Deborah’s fiancé misses her, and asks over and over for her. Lord Cockermouth angrily sends Chris to find her, bring her back and scold her for her rudeness. When Chris returns, he reports that Deborah was nowhere to be found. However, her rooms were locked from within and the lights were still burning. Cockermouth extended arm fell inertly on the table, all the guests noticed his distress and his pallor...

ATLANTA, HIDDEN IN THE CITY, the walking dead.
Tumblr media
Every city has a distinct skyline like the face of every person has a distinct facial contour and as all life has a distinct history from the moment of conception, so does Atlanta. Marcus Saykey is going to tell us all 3 things about the city as he goes along following in the footsteps of 3 incidents that have occurred in Atlanta for his research as a crime novelist.

The General.
The General is a 1926 American silent film. It was inspired by the Great Locomotive Chase, a true story of an event that occurred during the American Civil War. The story was adapted from the 1889 memoir The Great Locomotive Chase by William Pittenger. The film stars Buster Keaton, who co-directed it with Clyde Bruckman.
It was box-office flop.
The General has since been reevaluated, and is now often ranked among the greatest American films ever made. In 1989, it was selected by the Library of Congress to be included in the first class of films for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

Traffic is a 2000 American crime drama film directed by Steven Soderbergh and written by Stephen Gaghan. The film explores the illegal drug trade from several perspectives: users, enforcers, politicians, and traffickers. Their stories are edited together throughout the film, although some characters do not meet each other. The film is an adaptation of the 1989 British Channel 4 television series Traffik. It features both English and Spanish-language dialogue.
Traffic earned numerous awards, including four Oscars: Best Director for Steven Soderbergh, Best Supporting Actor for Benicio del Toro, Best Adapted Screenplay for Stephen Gaghan and Best Film Editing for Stephen Mirrione. It was also a commercial success.
In 2004, USA Network ran a miniseries—also called Traffic—based on the film and the 1989 British television series.

50 Years of Going to Shows, Pt. 9: Jazz in St. Louis
I am in the middle of my fourth year of attending shows at Jazz at the Bistro and it is a great joy to have this formative music back so centrally in my life, to make this my go to music, to think about music in jazz terms.  From that first Johnny Winter blues jam, I’ve always been drawn to virtuosic playing.  Certainly rock and ur-jam band guitarists were a start.  But I saw Norman Blake flat pick amazingly in those early years and later Celtic fiddlers and box players amazed me.  Chamber music but also Irish sessions have an intimate conversational aspect.  But it’s jazz that has it all.  I sensed that in the early 70s and it’s where I’ve come home to now.
I kept my eye on jazz before the Bistro, particularly through Webster University’s wonderful jazz faculty and their performances.  I would return to tried and true recordings, starting with Miles, Monk, and Mingus and Bill Evans at the Village Vanguard.  I knew I couldn’t miss Sonny Rollins when he played UMSL’s performing arts center in 2009 and had even better tickets for a return a few years later that he had to cancel.  He was vital, transforming from a tentative, slightly stooped old man into a flurry of ideas dancing lightly around the stage delighted in the choruses he unfolded for himself and others.  He had a guitarist (not a pianist), a trombone, drums and percussion, and Bob Crenshaw.  Standards and Ellington.  But it was a bit of a one off.
It has taken season packages at Jazz St. Louis for four years now to get the engagement and focus that I now have. It’s fitting that the first one was Bill Charlap and his trio.  That configuration is where I’m glad to start, going back to Oscar Peterson when I was 8.  I’m almost too vociferously anti-musical theater, except jazz musicians have done wonderful things with and burnished the Great American Song Book.  Charlap is one of our key curators.  But these aren’t museum pieces in his hands; they are a dynamic legacy kept alive by use.  There’s taste, drive, invention in tradition.  Just like that Johnny Winter concert in early fall of 1969, there was something I had to have more of.Next up was Vijay Iyer, also in a trio.  A different aesthetic but he worked a jam into Epistrophy, so tradition prevails.  And the piano trio’s elasticity continued to win me over.  The Bad Plus begins the year in St. Louis and we were where the rebooted when Orrin Evans replaced Ethan Iverson.  I saw them once with Iverson, couch toured that opening run of BP2.0, saw them last year and plan to see them next in January.  I started to get them seeing them live, seeing how the compositions work and how they work them.  I think they’re a little warmer and organic with Evans, just as smart and clever but grounded.  I’ve seen Benny Green swing hard and Cyrus Chestnutt do so as well but then throw in a good chunk of French Impressionism.  Emmet Cohen’s band was the foundation for an odd mix of horn players I wanted to see:  Marquis Hill and, for a second time, Melissa Aldana.  The five of them didn’t quite jell, but the Cohen trio is a working band I would see again.  Kenny Barron was a monument of taste and command and Chick Corea was impish, a grand old man of the music in spite of himself.  There were standards but also a glorious exposition on Paco de Luca’s Zyriab, pulling together the Arabic roots of Flamenco.  So, piano trios always with the Bad Plus, Christian Sands at the Sheldon Concert Hall down the street (where I saw Eliane Elias with Marc Johnson do wonderful Brazilian stuff but also some superb jazz evoking Bill Evans), and Connie Han ahead.
Now, we’re Miles Davis’s hometown and folks know that.  The SF Jazz Collective came to the Bistro in 2017 with a program of his music (wide ranging—Tutu and Bitches Brew as well as Nardis for an acoustic ensemble) as well as compositions from band members in the ensemble.  It’s a grand concept—a four horn front line with vibes and rhythm section, with some general stability but it’s morphed over the years.  Everyone composes and arranges and they celebrate a composer each season.  Our band was Sean Jones, David Sanchez, Miguel Zenon, Robin Eubanks, Warren Wolf, Edward Simon, Matt Penniman, and Obed Calvaire.  They return to the Sheldon this year for an In a Silent Way tribute with mostly the same folks—so anther chance to see Sanchez and Zenon who were particularly impressive.  Russell Gunn evoked Miles’s Blackhawk set with Jimmy Cobb holding down the drum chair very capably at age 90.
After piano tours and Milesiana, there are tenors.  So I couch toured a conversation and partial set with Benny Golson—not quite in the room with a legend but a vivid experience.  I am intrigued and enthralled at the playing of Melissa Aldana who crafts vivid lines that fill space quite fully (she has some great trio work) with ideas rather than tone.   Her own quartet had over active drumming from Tommy Crane whereas the Emmet Cohen show pulled her in multiple directions (blusier, mostly) than she quite fit.  She is a star in Artemis, but shares the front line with Anat Cohen and Ingrid Jensen, but she is one star among many.  So I haven’t quite heard the ideal Aldana show.  But I am glad to keep trying.
I’ve been able to see Joshua Redmond twice.  As great as his tenor invention is, his band (with Aaron Goldberg) was what impressed me most.  The way longstanding bands like this (and Branford Marsalis’s with Joey Caldazzaro) think together is very special.  Marsalis and Caldazzaro would magically complete one another’s thoughts and both tenors took great delight in what their bands could do, soloing all the better because of it.  In these bands, but most of them, including the trios, I an struck with just how good drummers have become, really playing music beyond rhythm.  Allison Miller has a Jazz Night in America video on “melodic drumming,” so it was a treat to see her with Artemis, listening so hard but happily to inflect the music so well.  She was almost the one to keep one’s eyes on, except that Anat Cohen exudes such unbridled joy at all times.  Her quartet show was a real highlight of 2018-2019.  I am so glad she and Ben Goldberg are making the clarinet a modern jazz instrument.
Joe Lovano came through with the brilliant and adventurous John Scofield who plays with Phil Lesh and Warren Haynes.  I find myself shying away from jazz guitar preferring the piano.  But that was quite a show as was Scofield again with Jack DeJohnette’s Hudson project which jammed out originals and The Band/Hendrix/Joni Mitchell very well.  DeJohnette has quite a palette of drums and especially cymbals.  We were 4 rows back on his side so we had a literally ringside seat for that magic at the Sheldon.
I have made a point to hear the likes of Marquis Hill, Robert Glasper, Stefon Harris, and, most recently, Terence Blanchard to hear how hip hop is being incorporated into jazz as funk was in my youth and rhythm and blues was in the ‘50s.  My younger generation didn’t bring that music home, so I don’t have that sensibility.  But I would be an old fart in extremis if I didn’t welcome those influences.  That said, I am more intrigued with how SFJAZZ takes the essence of electric Miles into acoustic music than vocoders and loops and reverb.  But, every time these newer shows have lots to delight in, including drummers who move the beat around and are not confined by any strictures.
The music is supposed to grow.  And I get to watch it.
--------------------
This entry is the last one of this 10 part series this Fall celebrating the 50th Anniversary of concert going, marked by my second one from 11/4/69 with Led Zeppelin.  Yes, this is part 9, but, rather like the Beatles releasing Abbey Road before Let It Be (actually, not like those monuments at all), I have already posted a part 10 about the shows I didn’t see.  But, wrapping up with jazz makes a certain amount of sense.

#1yrago The Cheesecake Factory has bankrolled a huge temple in an unincorporated California town
Tumblr media
Saranap is an unincorporated, loosely governed town in Contra Costa County in Northern California; it is home to a 66,000 square foot temple built by a religion called Sufism Reoriented, which has little to do with traditional Sufiism, being dedicated to the idea that an Indian man called Meher Baba was the reincarnation of Buddha and Christ and God on earth and that he will return in 700 years.
The story of the Sufism Reoriented temple in Saranap is long and weird. First, there's the fact that it was largely bankrolled by the founder of the Cheesecake Factory, who is a "Baba Lover" (as Sufism Reoriented's adherents style themselves). Then there's the fact that the zoning for the extraordinary building -- designed by the starchitect responsible for New York's Trump Tower, to last 700 years and survive any and all quakes, up to and including "the big one" -- was only possible because Ted Kennedy and Orrin Hatch passed the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act in 2000, to make sure that religions couldn't be stopped from building megachurches.
Then there's the opposition, which is motivated by a blend of uninformed Islamophobia (calling your groovy 60s religion after a mystical flavor of Islam might have played well in 1968, less so in the current moment), alarm about the changing nature of their community, and some aesthetic and political concerns.
The building is almost entirely underground and houses holy relics of the faith. Its protruding portions are Star Warsian white bubbles, like Hobbit houses for Tron fans, and all the interior decor seems to be made of transparent plastic, so woe betide those who dread a stubbed toe.

Hey it's mathemagiks dropping a heart for Orrin and Ehn because tumblr is being a jerk and I'm too lazy to log into Firefox
Orrin:
VISUAL ATTRACTIVENESS: 💗💗💗💗💗(purely aesthetic appreciation of looks)“Why he is named Tall-Blossom? Because his beauty is pure; the long spindling stem of his body, the red-petal crown of his hair. Is magical. Is willowy nature and graceful wind. Styr beholds this man for days; is never enough.”
FRIENDSHIP LEVEL: 💗💗💗💗💗(how close a friend they consider them)“Is bringer of food and teacher of cooking-ways. Patient with Styr’s many failings. Kind without measure. Simply is wish to know more of him, yes? Have more experience. Make bond amid victory and many dumplings!”
SEXUAL DESIRE: 💗💗(wanting to have sex with them)“Would be lying if said no, and the son of Ahtahrm does not lie. But Styr would crush beneath MIGHTY PELVIS, and then lovely Tall-Blossom suffers! … Also, Orrin is not lover of men. Still. Very beautiful. Is small shame.”
ROMANTIC INTENT: 💗💗(hoping for a romantic relationship)“Ehhhh. Same as before; would not say no. … A-HAHAH, imagine how healthy clan would be, with so much food! Ah, but is okay. Orrin is wonderful friend. Happy to stay this way.”
Ehn:
VISUAL ATTRACTIVENESS: 💗💗💗(purely aesthetic appreciation of looks)“A-hahah, little Moon-Sprite is cute! Pretty to behold, like flittering sylph in forest. Also green is good color. Little round face full with innocence! Charming.”
FRIENDSHIP LEVEL: 💗💗💗(how close a friend they consider them)“Why he is so afraid? Little Ehn shrinks from Styr like frightened coeurl-child, but Styr is no harm. He will come more to the house, yes? Styr makes dragon-pepper herring special for him, and plays games with tiny shimmer-fox!”
SEXUAL DESIRE: 💔(wanting to have sex with them)“Noooooo. No no no. No. Is so… cute. Wrong kind of cute. Styr will not defile this cute with lusts; never. No. Simply no.”
ROMANTIC INTENT: 💔(hoping for a romantic relationship)“Also no. Is gentle-heart and kind-spirit, but… no. Is not what one wishes in a bond-mate. Perfectly happy as little magic friend.”

Also I wanna draw your OCs too. So are those little pincher things around Orrins mouth actual pincher things? Or just like little horn thingies or idk flesh stubs??? Also does he have leathery skin and kinda reptile plating? Or maybe you have like a ref sheet or something...?
Aw, draw away, hon - I’d be thrilled to see it!
All of those pointy bits on Orrin’s face and head are spikes/horns.  I’d say leathery skin is pretty accurate.  I’m not sure how it actually works, but yeah, there’s some boney/scaley/plating type stuff going on around the nose, throat, shoulders, his back, etc.  There’s some Star Wars influences in there (Zabrak, pretty obviously) and some Star Trek too but his design is based on aesthetic choices rather than any careful planning on my part, really.
Thanks for your questions!  I got your other ask too and will try to answer it when I have a little more time

More aesthetic boards for my original project in preparation for NaNoWriMo! On to the second series now.
Faerie siblings Orrin and Serrea.
Orrin is selfish, hedonistic, and occasionally vengeful, but also fiercely loyal to those who have earned his favor.
Serrea is his conscience, the voice of reason and compassion, clever and diplomatic.

🎶 what song makes you think of... can I say all muses? No? How about anyone that isn't Ehn (because Ehn is the only one I really know!)
((So for fun, I’m gonna link songs that may not 100% be said character’s aesthetic but still remind me of them for various reasons!))
Orrin: Have A Nice Day (World Order)
youtube
Maybe not his home language, but the bright tone, cheerful lyrics of enjoying a day on the town, and even the slightly bittersweet note at the end all surprisingly fit him to a T. Plus look how fun the music video is; he’d probably whistle this tune to himself for days on end.
Banadei: Barracuda (Noisestorm)
youtube
Despite dubstep not really being a thing in FFXIV’s setting, the genre is still very much her thing with its heavy reliance on beats and rhythm. I like to think Barracuda would be her theme when she’s in the DNC spec, especially with the great snare cadences peppered throughout it.
Scrap: Catch Me if You Can (from Blood Blockade Battlefront)
youtube
I have never watched this anime (I found this song through Spotify) but I dunno, something about its energy and tone give me the same vibes as a lively chase through the docks of Limsa Lominsa, perhaps when Scrap knows he has the upper hand in making a getaway.

COUCH TOUR: BOBBY WATSON with Orrin Evans, Curtis Lundy (!), and Victor Jones, SMOKE JAZZ CLUB, 30 JULY 2022, 3rd Set
The Smoke Streams were so important to lock down, quality both in presenting solid swinging artists and in production quality. They were physically closed for remodeling but are back including the streams.
Bobby Watson’s latest recording was for their label and he appeared early in their reopening cycle. He emerged out of Kansas City (!!!) after I left town and wasn’t attending to the music. He plays alto and I am recovering from a prejudice against the instrument. But he is part of what I kept myself from. He has recently retired from the music faculty at my undergraduate alma mater, the University of Missouri—Kansas City, so that’s another reason why I shouldn’t have.
He has an appealing tone, call it fine grained sandpaper. There’s a grit but it results in a very smooth result. He’s from Kansas City so there’s a blues side that reaches back to before Charlie Parker and the opener was evocative to both seminal influences. He is fluid but patient. He has a lyrical quality that goes beyond Bird (a unique melodicist to be sure). I don’t know Benny Carter well enough to cite him, but it feels older than bop and maybe not Johnny Hodges. But maybe Johnny Hodges.
All in all, quite wonderful.
That Orrin Evans was the pianist added familiarity and fun. He approaches tunes in a modern tangential way and soloes unconventionally, but there’s an irrepressible swing and earthiness that fits in. He and Watson had some fruitful conversations that brimmed with invention from both of them.
On the other hand, Curtis Lundy is an old ally of Watson’s and he was an insistent pulse. He was busier than Watson, but that bed made Watson’s restraint over it informed by that tension. He was funky and driving on Watson’s Beatitudes which was both a groove and reverential. Not too reverential as Watson hinted at a pop song (and, as a melodicist, he hears and expresses melodic connections often). Victor Jones is another Watson mainstay and he contributed crisp support to one and all.
The opener was Parkerish, if not an actual composition of Bird himself. It was a fine way for the band to settle in to their well established roles. Though they probably didn’t need much settling as this was the third set from Saturday night (so is it a Couch Tour if it’s not live but within the 24 streaming window? This time, I vote yes.), as such it was agonizingly short (an hour in toto but they didn’t really start until the 14 minute mark (do I get the early set on the thought they start on time and play for the hour? Given the choice, I went late for a relaxed feel that might stretch things out.).
The ballads were what grabbed me. Someone To Watch Over Me emerged from Watson and Evans exploring it each in their own way. But the gem was Watson’s Love Remains which is just a stunning line. Both though explored the creative tensions I hear in Watson’s playing; Parker and beyond, yet an older aesthetic, a pleasant roughness in the service of these melodic instincts.
They closed with In Case You Missed It which featured Evans dancing over Lundy and Jones to set up Watson, both for his own steps and then a bit of a pas de deux with the piano.
I programmed a Watson blues as part of a set of KC blues for WGTE’s Jazz Spectrum in honor of my sister as part of her bucket list trip to our old hometown. I will savor his Love Remains and mine the catalog in search of other treasures.
