Someone I work with had a customer ask for a plant that doesn't die, and got angry when he suggested an artificial plant. Legit thought we just had the secret to eternal life sitting in a nursery.

Obey Me zombie apocalypse AU except everyone is human and nobody dies because I'm not good at writing character death. Less focused on MC/you and more about world building and random ideas
Literally did this in class on a time limit so it's not edited </3
★‱—–-
"Demons" and "angels" aren't real, they're just the names of the two most major survivor groups for good reason; demons are ruthless and unforgiving, rough on the outside and ridged on the edges towards outsiders. Generally it's very hard to join their group, if not flat out impossible past a certain point.
Angels on the other hand, while just as hard to become, tend to be kinder to people not in their group. They're more willing to house someone they can see the good intentions of, more willing to help someone out of a sticky situation with no strings attached.
Of course, "reapers" exist, but they're less of a group and more of a web of mercenaries willing to take long lasting missions to hunt down other survivors or clean out large zombie infested areas on their own.
Demons:
A town around the beginning of the apocalypse had been overtaken by them, more specifically, by Diavolo's father and made into a highly fortified base with the help of many people over the course of a long period of time. Eventually one day he went missing on a serious hunt and everything was left to his son. The city was named Devildom to play into the whole demon theme going on.
Leader + second in command: Diavolo, Barbatos
Overseers: Lucifer (general manager), Mammon (scavenging + look out), Leviathan (weaponry/arsenal), Satan (archivist), Asmodeus (hygiene), Beelzebub (food storage + production), Belphegor (defense/strategist)
Honorable mention: Mephistopheles
Role meanings:
General management — does whatever is needed, helps keep other overseers on track and in line, reports weekly agenda and past week's events directly to Diavolo
Scavenger + look out — organizes groups to go out scavenging for material that cannot otherwise be grown or made, also keeps people on the lookout around Devildom in case of any hoards in the area or survivors with bad intentions
Weaponry/arsenal — keeps track of the creation and distribution of weapons, including but not limited to things such as guns, explosives, melee, and chemical warfare
Archivist — writes down and keeps a library of information regarding the apocalypse, types for zombies, people in the Devildom, and any important information on other survivor groups and natural phenomenon
Hygienist — creates and distributes items of hygienic need, such as clothes, soap, feminine products, razors, and helps to manage the clean water
Food storage and production — despite the name, the role keeps track of rations and oversees the agricultural parts for the town
Defense/strategist — keeps a general eye on the surrounding area and infrastructure of the Devildom in the event of an emergency, and helps plot out the best means of evacuation and the best places for guards
Ages of lest to youngest:
Barbatos — 33
Lucifer — 30
Diavolo — 29
Mephistopheles — 28
Mammon — 26
Leviathan — 24
Asmodeus — 22
Beelzebub & Belphegor — 20
Satan — 17
Angels:
The upper class part of a city was overtaken sometime around when the Devildom was created, nicknamed Celeste, it mainly consists of several tall buildings, the lower levels left clean but vacant as most angels are in the higher floors to allow for ensured safety during the night. It was created by a man named Father, who nowadays is very rarely seen and uses Michael to speak to his followers.
Leader + second in command: Father, Michael
Known overseers and honorable mentions: Simeon (ex overseer, what his job was remains unknown), Luke (a young angel), Raphael (overseer for defense/strategy)
Role meanings:
Defense/strategy — keeps a general eye on surrounding area and infrastructure of Celeste in the event of an emergency, helps to plot out the best means of evacuation, often getting his hands dirty for the safety of other angels
Ages oldest to youngest:
Father — unknown, last seen appearing to be in his kid 60s 8 years ago
Michael — 33
Simeon — 30
Raphael — 23
Luke — 10
Simeon nowadays bounces from job to job as needed, but typically is seen helping with managing things on a lesser level with Luke planted right by his side. It's unknown if Luke is biologically related to Simeon, however, they treat each other as father and son.
Reapers and honorable mentions:
Reapers are less of a group and more an interconnected web of people, labeled based on their ability to survive with a ruthlessness very few could muster. Many still count to the dies that other survivors meant safety, that despite the ten years since the start of the apocalypse, that a cure could be made. Reapers were typically the first to suck up the situation and accept that humanity was no longer an option.
While not a reaper, Solomon was a known menace among survivors. He was a force to be reckoned with, and not many were very fond of the man despite him having extensive knowledge on so many things and having connections to the reapers, angels, demons, and many other survivor groups.
MC is a survivor with little known about their last, though their reputation is high after managing to befriend several different groups of survivors, including demons, angels, and reapers.
Ages oldest to youngest:
Thirteen — 27
Solomon — 25
MC — unknown, wears a constant goat skull as a mask and rarely speaks, speculation on their age ranges and very few know how old they truly are

8.17.24 / day 55 of being a delusional artist
day 3 of moon time
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
today (yesterday) was long, it was hot, i did not defend my time as an artist instead, i stretched outward, into the world, missed my apartment the entire time. the time i felt most comfortable, oddly, was during my 9am session with eugene, though that likely means that each event throughout the day merely chipped away at me, bit by bit, until i came home, exhausted, at about 6pm.
day 3 of my period, and everything that touches me feels like a needle, my emotions are like bottled live electricity and can be affected by everything and anything. on top of it all, i am in excruciating pain every so often, and it feels like every time i bounce back from a cramp attack, i am hit by another.
i used to snort coke off of toilet seats and now i am experience an intensely growing fear of plastics and toxic chemicals in everything from my food, to my clothes, my sheets, my towels, my dish ware, pretty much everything. everything is plastic, though, in this day + age, and i have to come to terms with the fact that even if this is a problem that exists and is valid in the world, i cannot afford to replace my entire wardrobe with natural cotton fibers and linens that are non-toxic and have no artificial dyes. i can’t replace every plastic thing in my home, i can’t even afford to buy all organic groceries. that doesn’t stop me from spiraling every time i go grocery shopping, though. it doesn’t stop me from panicking every time i want to eat something that i didn’t make myself (so i don’t, or i do and i immediately become afraid/anxious)
tonight i watched the first episode of the new season of the umbrella academy and in this season, victor (elliot page’s character <3) is a womanizing bar owner that has run through every woman in town (love) and klause (token mentally ill/addicted character) looks to have developed some form of OCD, especially in regards to germs and contamination. He is newly sober in this season, and has transformed into a clean freak, paranoid, control-seeking individual. Is this normal for recovering addicts? To pull a complete 180 and try to control everything in your environment? is it because we know how close we’ve been to death that we want to do anything and everything in our control to prevent it from being not on our terms?
part of me sees how i am living an unhealthy life, but the other part of me just thinks i’m right. it’s hard to tell yourself that you’re wrong when every day there’s a news story about some company/farm/manufacturer’s investigation findings being released on toxic chemicals present (above the legal limit, of course). it’s always the same; some company, whether it be kerrygold (my favorite butter), crocs (my favorite shoes), boar’s head (my favorite roast beef), raw rolling papers (supposedly natural, used them for years), simply made orange juice (literally almost bought the day before the lawsuit went public), or seltzer water (thankfully i hate that shit), it’s always the same. ok, boars head was lysteria, but the rest were all chemicals above the legal limit. arsenic, bpas, bpfs, bpss, lead, piss, whatever. poison in something i’ve consumed, worn, used.
i used to poison myself all the time, though, right? so why should it bother my this much? why does it bother me so much than it did before?
i used to think i was confident, i think i was just vacant, dissociating so much that i could be whatever people wanted me to be i never used to spend this much time thinking about my principles, how my actions, from what i buy, to what i support, to who i support, reflect myself as a person, and how they do and don’t align with who i am. i didn’t used to wince at the perfect drying rack someone sends me in an amazon link because i’m boycotting. i would have just bought it. “there’s no ethical consumption under capitalism” i would have said. sure, but some consumption is, let’s say, less unethical than others. and maybe i knew that when i was 20, in college, ordering everything for my freshman dorm from amazon because i didn’t have a car and it was easy. maybe i knew that it was unethical and wasn’t who i was as a person, and did it anyway, because it was easy. or maybe i wasn’t this person yet. maybe this person i am now, 7 years in the future, is simply the kind of person who does not do that. and maybe that’s because i got sober, and maybe that was just part of it. the tipping point, between freedom and intention. between chaos and direction. i find it hard to just let go now. the person i am now is holding on tight to rules that do not apply to the person i dream of being. the person i dream of being does not wish to control his world. the person i dream of being flows through the world, and hopes to leave it a little better than when he found it, though i suppose even that is hubris, to wish to change something else. for i know the only thing i have control over changing is myself.

It's slow going at the moment, but I've finally gotten maybe 1/3 of the way through reading Blindsight, specifically the section before the Rorschach chapter begins, and I have a theory I haven't seen in any of the (admittedly few) summaries and discussions on the plotline and meaning of the novel.
The closer Theseus gets to the radiation-bleeding, thorny heart of Rorschach, the more frequent and noticeable Siri's sightings of something 'wrong' become. Sarasti is similiar enough to humans, but not quite human, the others have been augmented, and no one on the ship is really baseline (normies or NT). Sarasti seems more like the ship itself, just with different programming, data unclouded by emotion, at least of the sociable sort - everything is calculated. The others quite literally do have an organic brain/computer connection on the inside, their ND traits and the extra processing power in service to learning about both other humans, and now an alien entity, which is perhaps a lifeform or perhaps not entirely alive.
The crew maintains the idea that they, and humanity, likely don't have anything Rorschach could possibly want, as Rorschach's composition is so chemically and behaviorally different from anything humanity has encountered before. Guesses are made as to why Rorschach is the way it is, including the guess from conversations they have that Rorschach is a Chinese Room.
And perhaps that's true insofar as the verbal conversation itself, but that's not the only form of communication, just as much as physical resources aren't the only thing humanity possesses. I think Rorschach is intelligent enough to know how to mimic a Chinese Room, disarming some of the crew's fear and suspicions. But Rorschach wants information about humanity, and not the nonsense vagueries the crew feeds it, but the sort you really only get as a silent, invisible outside observer.
Rorschach uses cloaking to hide from Theseus. Rorschach requests that the ship should not approach, then mentions that it is a threat to life and systems onboard Theseus. It knows humanity is curious. The more it claims it wants the crew to avoid it, the more curious the crew becomes, and the closer the crew gets to Rorschach, like moths to a flame.
And those odd, wrong things Siri notices? Perhaps Rorschach has someone or something inside Theseus, observing the crew, unseen and unheard, because it too is cloaked, and the closer the observer gets to the main body of Rorschach, the less the cloaking works, at least on Siri's senses, as Siri isn't trying to understand the information he picks up so much as he merely interprets it as a human version of a Chinese Room.
Rorschach very much does intend something for humanity, our solar system is very much a petri dish full of organisms to be studied, but the crew is so close and so loaded with their own ideas in the effort to make Rorschach understandable to them, that they simply can't see the obvious intentions Rorschach has.
I could be wrong, but perhaps that's why it's Blindsight. That which we recognize as necessary for seeing (perception) is absent in Rorschach, but Rorschach does in fact have the ability to see (sensation), much like in actual cases of blindsight. In fact, humanity as a whole, or at least the crew itself seems to be suffering from Anton syndrome - that which is needed to see is damaged, causing blindness, but the crew still believes it can see and acts accordingly, and walking straight into closed doors because of it.
Perhaps it is humanity missing the full sensations for actual awareness, and Rorschach is a more complete form of awareness.

"blind Pharma au" Please tell me more 👀
Oh shit hiiiiii dsklfjsd I'll try to write down some sorta interesting details in bullet points, I don't really have a specific "plot" for it or anything it's literally just, "everything is the same but Pharma was born blind" so here goes. Also, warning for made-up medicine, sketchy biology/scientific knowledge, and lots of headcanons
Pharma was still a forged medic, only when he finished forging everything about him was top notch except his optics. They're still there on his face and look like any seeing mech's eyes, it's just that there's just no connection between his eyes and his brain for whatever reason
This leads to a lot of discussion of what classification he should be put underneath, as Pharma has beautiful medic hands (scientific class) but is also a flight frame (typically consigned to transportation or soldiering) but is blind so how is he supposed to do any of those things (disposable class)? Pharma is sitting there through all this and gets increasingly irate at these mechs calling him useless because he can't see and this is apparently a big deal. From Pharma's perspective, he has all the tools he needs to live a normal life, but apparently because he's not "seeing" there's something wrong with him
Pharma meanwhile was forged with plenty of extra strong senses including keen hearing, echolocation, electromagnetic sensors, sonar, etc even sensitive touch and taste and smell. He can walk around and avoid colliding with other mechs without aid. He can detect objects around him even if they're of very small size.
Somehow or another Pharma ends up successfully becoming a doctor (maybe they just decided they didn't want to waste a forged medic or something) and his medical hands + his increased senses actually allow him to do just fine. Things that other mechs would observe with their eyes, Pharma can sense through his hands but also unorthodox senses like tasting/smelling faint chemical traces in the air and being able to hear small changes in patients' organs and whatnot
Yes, Pharma gets a lot of questions about "but how can you fly if you're blind???" and his answer is always that his alt mode works just fine, he just avoids flying in the city because he doesn't want to get hit by anyone.
Which actually means that Pharma spends a lot of time living among ground-frames (taking public transportation instead of flying, living in an apartment with ground floors instead of high towers flight frames usually favor) and thus he becomes accustomed to near-constant attention and more or less being a spectacle. As a result, Pharma really doesn't like being stared at or having people crowd too close to him (sometimes people on the bus would get...touchy with him, with the wonder of seeing a flight frame on the ground and all).
Pharma could navigate on his own and do his job without disability aids, but he does buy a cane at some point just because it makes things a little easier (and also he can stab/whack people with it "by accident" if they get in his personal space)
Eventually, Pharma saves enough money from his job as a doctor to buy a seeing eye drone (this is why I was reblogging your art with "blind Pharma AU" :3c ). I imagine the drone also has flying capabilities and can augment Pharma's senses with its own due to some Cybertronian Bluetooth connection or something. It gives Pharma enough extra sensory and spatial information that he CAN do things like fly in crowded areas, since the drone can help him navigate traffic and guide him from open area to open area
Why doesn't Pharma just get his eyes fixed or something? A couple of reasons, one being that Pharma insists that there's nothing to fix out of pride. From the moment he came online people talked about him like he was defective just because he couldn't see, and frankly Pharma is so offended about it that he partially wants to remain blind just to spite everyone who thinks he's odd or can't be a good doctor
Another reason that Pharma doesn't "fix his eyes" could possibly be that the cause of his blindness isn't well known (he was forged, not cold constructed, which means there are no "schematics" to explain how each piece of his frame works) and Pharma is afraid of letting anyone tinker with his body or especially his brain without knowing exactly what the potential side effects of surgery could be. I mean, Pharma literally works for the Institute before the war; he knows exactly what things like shadowplay are capable of doing, and quite frankly, he doesn't want to even risk anyone getting inside of his brain and tampering with something that could completely alter his mind
That's about everything I can think of offhand ^_^ I'm happy to answer any follow-up questions or maybe dig through my Discord DMs if you want more details!

"why is staedtler so similar to reagan lmao why would the show do that. it's almost like they're somehow related" ok. let me rebutt that. ur wrong btw. here's why.
if you're talking about looks, then i can see what you mean. similar eyebrows and nose shape, i guess. it makes them look kinda related if u imagine it ? but the show would Not pull any weird incest crap so they probably just have similar facial features by coincidence. it's no big deal. can happen to anyone.
and if you're talking about personality, even though they intially bonded over how similar they are to each other, they have a Lot of key differences !!
essay below cut.
reagan has basically sold her soul to the deep state. her work is everything to her. she's willing to give up love for her job, because that's the kind of person she is. she wants to make a difference, even if it'll cost her everything.
ron wants nothing to do with the shadow world. he wants to get away from it all and live a normal life with the person he loves most.
ron has more of a moral compass than reagan does. he avoids doing ethically questionable things whenever possible. he hates his job as a mind eraser and wants to leave the shadow world.
reagan is less concerned with ethics. she's been in cognito long enough to see some bullshit, and even though she recognizes the things they're getting up to aren't exactly ethical (she literally says the situation in still valley is "radically unethical") she does it anyway. because it's her job. simple as that. a lot of what cognito does can be considered lesser evils for a greater good, but shit like spraying an entire town with mind-erasing chemicals so they can sell more dangerous outdated crap is just another tuesday afternoon for her. she doesn't really mind. heck, she probably doesn't even care. she's probably never given still valley another thought after p1e5.
reagan's a bit of a control freak. she probably gets it from rand, no surprises there. if she wants a job done right, she thinks she has to do it herself. in p2e4, she wants her and ron's trip to rome to go perfectly so she can ask him to be her boyfriend. she overuses the catholicizer because if they take too long, they'll be late for her reservation, and that'll ruin the mood, and he might say no. she interrogates him under the guise of the mouth of truth when she hears him say he doesn't date because she wants to know what her chances are before she pops the question. she wants everything to go according to plan, and when it doesn't, she takes it upon herself to arrange things so they're in her favor again. in rontagion, she doesn't trust that her relationship with ron will last if he leaves the shadow government, so she jumps through hoops and organizes an entire company halloween party just to keep him in the shadow world. basically, she wants things to go her way. a lot. and the only people she fully trusts outside of herself are probably brett and ron (and even then, she prefers to get things done herself), so she tends to deal with everything on her own.
ron doesn't seem to share this problem, probably because he grew up in a non-ridley household. in appleton, when he convinces reagan to run away with him, that's literally exactly what he does. no behind-the-scenes shenanigans to highlight the dangers of the deep state, no elaborate scheme to make her see the appeal of a simple life in an unknown city, nothing. he just talks to her, tells her why he wants this, and asks her to think about it. he leaves the decision completely up to her and does zero meddling. if reagan were in his shoes, she'd probably have prepared at least a 50-slide powerpoint presentation, among other things. she'd be a lot more worried about what decision ron would make, and she'd channel that nervous energy into coming up with something to increase the odds that he'd say yes to her.
and that's just some of their differences.
ron seems more comfortable meeting new people than reagan does.
reagan gets so caught up in her feelings that she sometimes loses sight if the bigger picture. ron (the way i see him at least) is more level-headed.
ron is plagued by guilt over the memories he's erased. reagan's had to disappear (and probably indirectly cause the deaths of) more than a few people, but it's never kept her up at night.
reagan's a little paranoid (courtesy of rand, of course). ron's less on edge than she is.
in summary, i love them very much.
yes, the show highlighted how alike they are in p2e1. yes, their similarities are part of why their fling started in the first place. but they're still two very different people with very different priorities in a world where not one in a thousand timelines saw them happy together. god i hate this show.

"Let me take care of you, John," she sighs as she closes her door behind him. He looks like he always does, a little bedraggled and a lot emotional run-over. Nothing a million years of dreamless, restorative sleep, an actual meal and coffee after a hot shower couldn't cure.
And while her towers over her, she still reaches up and tries to slip his trench over his shoulders. "Are you bleedin' anywhere?" A hint of it perpetually hangs about him; iron tang and organic chemicals that make it hard to tell if it is his or someone else's. She tips forward without really intending to as she pushes at the coat, and unfortunately presses into him. She can't help the momentary half-close of her eyes. How she savours the warmth of him. Or the sigh that carries just enough sound to speak of things she never does. Just because she's over the moon with him doesn't mean she has to acknowledge it. The tip of her tongue flicks over the points of her sharp teeth.
The smell of greenery hits his nose first before everything else. It’s something he’s grown to associate with Beth and how it seems to cling about her. His brain’s not exactly wired right at the moment to even register that her’s was the first place he had wandered off to.
Familiarity, a safe space, muscle memory could probably be blamed on the way he’s immediately wrapped around her with his face buried in her neck. Breathing in the sweet floral scent like it’s a drug that’s hellbent on keeping him here. John barely mumbles something about always having dried blood somewhere, but it’s really not what’s important.
He was usually better than this at managing the bad days, usually better at keeping the bits of himself locked up that felt like a weakness. Literally, in one particular case, though he had enough faith in the kid to make sure that the locket wouldn’t ever be found

“Tell me t’ stop
” Another long breath, something reminding him vaguely of hibiscus playing at his nostrils. His breath hot against exposed skin, almost needy, his hands scratching further down her spine to try and get at
 something. God. He shouldn’t—
“Tell me t’ piss off
 please
”

Harvard/MIT Scientists Claim New "Chemical Cocktails" Can Reverse Aging
Stop us if you've heard this sci-fi concept before: a cocktail of specialized chemicals that rejuvenates your whole body, from your eyes to your brain, returning everything to a more youthful state.
If that sounds like the stuff of literal myth — or a grossly misfired directorial attempt by the Wachowskis — you're right to be skeptical. Quacks have a lot to gain from convincing consumers to buy miracle cures, nevermind convincing billionaires to underwrite research into them; the reality, though, is that effective life-extension treatments have remained elusive.
That's why we were struck to see a team of scientists that includes researchers from the name-brand Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts Institute of Technology sounding off about what they say are promising new leads, published this month in the journal Aging.
"We identify six chemical cocktails, which, in less than a week and without compromising cellular identity, restore a youthful genome-wide transcript profile and reverse transcriptomic age," reads the paper. "Thus, rejuvenation by age reversal can be achieved, not only by genetic, but also chemical means."
Sounds big, right? The researchers claim they pinpointed six treatments that can reverse aging in cells and turn them into a more "youthful state," according to a press release from Aging's publisher, without causing dangerous unregulated cell growth.
As usual, though, caveats abound. Much of the research focused simply on tissues in a lab, and while trials on mice and monkeys yielded "encouraging results," the team has yet to test any of the treatments on human subjects.
However, Harvard Medical School faculty member and lead principal investigator on the project David Sinclair says that preparations for human trials are ongoing. Needless to say, we'll be watching — if nothing else, because Sinclair seems willing to stake his formidable reputation on the work.
"Until recently, the best we could do was slow aging,"he said in the press release. "New discoveries suggest we can now reverse it."
The research team looked at molecules known to "reprogram" animal cells and turn them into pluripotent stem cells, which can transform into any type of cell inside an organism, which makes them a promising candidate for regenerative medicine.
The scientists tested them on specialized cellular cultures where they could observe certain markers of aging known as "deterioration of nucleocytoplasmic compartmentalization," which happen when proteins in a cell's nucleus leaks into the cytoplasm, the jelly-like substance inside it, and fails to be "imported" back into the nucleus.
From those lab tests, they identified six chemical combinations that they say reversed aging in just four days of treatment without changing cell identity like in gene therapy, according to the paper.
While these results are early — and far from being converted into anything commercially or even medically available — it does feel concrete in the generalized circus of the life extension industry, where tech bros have resorted to ridiculous treatments as exotic as drawing blood from younger relatives.
And in the long shot that a treatment like this actually makes it to market? It would be a seismic shift not just for human health, but potentially the entire planet's demographics, social dynamics, and environmental impact. Maybe the mercurial SpaceX CEO Elon Musk is right to warn against it.

Bromate In Water (What You Need to Know in [year])
Tumblr media
Bromate is a disinfection byproduct with cancer-causing effects. In this guide, we've shared everything you need to know about bromate in drinking water, including how it's formed, its health effects, how to know if your water contains bromate, and more. 📌 Key Takeaways: - Bromate is a carcinogenic chemical often found in disinfected drinking water. - Bromate gets into water when ozone (a chemical disinfectant) reacts with bromide-containing waters. - The biggest known health effect of ingesting bromate is cancer, caused by DNA damage. ❔ What Is Bromate In Water? Bromate is one of the unwanted byproducts of chemical disinfection. The reason why bromate is unwanted is that it has several known health effects. The most dangerous known health effect of bromate is cancer of various organs. We've shared more about how bromate gets into water, and the effects of high concentrations of bromate measured in tap water, in the below sections. 🚰 How Does Bromate Get Into Water? Bromate gets into water when it's treated with ozone, which reacts with bromide, a compound that occurs naturally in many water sources. The formation of bromate is also likely if drinking water is treated with calcium hypochlorite or sodium hypochlorite solution, although these disinfectants are not commonly used in the public water treatment process. Here's the scientific formula for the reaction between ozone and bromide: Br− + O3 → BrO−3 To understand how and why bromate gets into water, we need to look at the chemical disinfection process. Most public water systems use chemicals to disinfect their water supplies. Chemical disinfectants are cheap and easy to come by, and they leave residual disinfectant in the water, meaning that the water supply is protected right up until it reaches your home. Common chemicals used to disinfect drinking water include chlorine, chloramine, chlorine dioxide, and ozone. Bromate formation occurs when water is treated with ozone (ozonation), which is made from three molecules of oxygen bonded together. This chemical has proven effective at bonding to bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms, causing them to break down and preventing them from making us sick. An adequate concentration of ozone must be used to ensure water is protected from pathogens on its journey to our homes. If the source water supply contains bromide, the likelihood of a reaction between the ozone and bromide is high, and the disinfected water will probably contain bromate. But where does bromide come from? It's naturally occurring, and is found in all water sources in concentrations ranging from 10 to 1,000 ÎŒg/L (micrograms per liter), so there's a good chance that it's in your local water supply. ă€œïž How Much Bromate Does Water Contain? Different water supplies contain different amounts of bromate. There is no exact amount of bromate that all disinfected drinking water supplies contain, and some water supplies might contain no bromate at all. The amount of bromate detected in your water depends on a number of factors, including: - The bromide ion concentration of your source water - The higher the water's bromide levels, the more likely the bromate formation. - The amount of ozone used to disinfect the water - Equally, the more ozone use to disinfect the drinking water, the higher the likelihood of bromate formation. - The water pH - The reaction rate between ozone and bromide increases as water pH increases. If the water pH is 8.8 or higher, the reaction rate will level off. A pH of 6.0 or less reduces bromide formation. - Contact time - The contact time between the ozone and the water supply will also influence bromate formation. The longer the contact time, the more opportunity for bromate to form. There is a cutoff point for the amount of bromate you can expect to find in your water. There should never be an opportunity for exceedingly high bromate formation because water utilities take steps to reduce organic matter (including bromide) before water is disinfected, and only low levels of disinfectants are added to water - just enough to eliminate the risk of getting sick from drinking pathogens. However, if you've read about the dangers of bromate in drinking water, you probably don't want to drink even low levels of this contaminant. Plus, many water supplies contain more than 10 PPB of bromate, which exceeds the Maximum Contaminant Level set by the US EPA. 🔎 How To Know If Your Water Contains Bromate Bromate in water doesn't have a taste, smell, or color, so you can't detect this contaminant by simply looking at your water or tasting it from the tap. The best way to know whether or not your water contains bromate is to check your Water Quality Report or test your water. Check Your Water Quality Report Your most recent Water Quality Report (or Consumer Confidence Report) should tell you all the useful information about your drinking water quality, including which disinfection chemical is used to disinfect your water, and the concentration of bromate detected in the treated water at the plant. Note that a Consumer Confidence Report does have a few limitations. The bromate levels detected at the treatment plant will likely be lower than the bromate concentrations in your water supply at home, since bromate formation will continue as ozone and bromide react in the water traveling in the distribution system to your home. However, reading this Report will at least give you knowledge about whether or not your water is treated with ozone. If the answer is yes, and the ozone dose is fairly high, your water has a high bromate formation potential. You can find your Consumer Confidence Report online - just search for your water utility (or your local authority if you're not sure) followed by "*year Consumer Confidence Report". Test Your Water The most effective way to determine the bromate concentration of your drinking water is to conduct a water test. Water testing will tell you exactly how much bromate is present in the water leaving your faucets, giving you the data you need to take action against this contaminant if necessary. We've shared a step-by-step process for testing your water for bromate later in this guide. đŸš± Is Bromate In Drinking Water Dangerous? Bromate in drinking water is dangerous because this chemical has been linked to numerous serious human health effects. A World Health Organization (WHO) report on the health effects of bromate in drinking water shared the results of several studies on laboratory animals into the potentially cancer-causing effects of bromate. One of these studies found that bromate exposure significantly increased the formation of tumors of the thyroid gland, and kidney tumors - some of these cancerous, and some not. Other non-cancer health effects of bromate exposure include: - Nausea and vomiting - Diarrhea - Abdominal pain - Central nervous system depression - Kidney failure - Deafness These health risks are unlikely if relatively low, average concentrations of bromate are consumed in disinfected byproducts. The biggest danger of bromate is its status as a possible human carcinogen. 📉 Is Bromate In Tap Water Regulated? Yes, bromate in tap water is regulated. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has developed a Maximum Contaminant Level of 10 PPB (parts per billion) of mg/L (milligrams per liter) of bromate in water. This MCL is based on research into bromates health effects, and ingesting levels of bromate below 10 mg/L is considered safe in the long term. So, what does that mean? If your water supply contains more than 10 mg/L of bromate, the EPA believes you're at an increased risk of cancer from long-term exposure to this chemical. There are a number of ways that water treatment facilities can reduce bromate formation, including: - Reducing the ozone dose as much as possible - Lowering water pH to below 6.0 - More thoroughly removing bromide from the source water - Choosing an alternative water source that has a lower concentration of naturally occurring bromide - Pre-treating the water with ammonia Unfortunately, despite this regulation, many public water supplies contain high concentrations of bromate that exceed the EPA MCL for this contaminant. đŸ§Ș How To Test For Bromate In Tap Water If you're concerned about bromate contamination and your local water treatment plant uses ozone disinfection, we recommend testing your water for this byproduct. There are no at-home test kits that are smart enough to detect disinfection byproducts like the bromate ion. For that reason, you will need to use a more advanced test conducted by your local accredited laboratory. To test for bromate with a laboratory test, follow these steps: - Order your preferred test. A typical bromate and bromide water test costs around $150-$200. - Take a sample of your drinking water. Follow the laboratory's instructions to take a sample (or samples) of your tap water in the included vial, then send it to the laboratory. - Wait for your results. You'll usually receive your test results within 10-14 days. Your results will give you the exact measurements of bromate detected in your water. The results should make it clear if elevated levels are detected, and offer solutions on how to reduce bromate in your water. đŸ‘©đŸœâ€âš•ïž What To Do If You're Concerned About Bromate In Your Water If you're concerned about bromate in your water, you probably won't have control over the bromate formation potential at your local water treatment plants. And the solution isn't necessarily to lobby for your water utility to stop using ozone, either, since switching to another chemical disinfectant would simply lead to the presence of another cancer-causing disinfection byproduct (of which there are many). So, the only thing you can do is to reduce your bromate exposure at home. Here are the steps we recommend taking if you test your water and discover high levels of bromate: - If you get your water from a municipal supplier, contact the supplier and provide a copy of your test results for them to review. Ask your supplier what steps they are taking to reduce the bromate formation in the water produced for public use. - Regardless of your water supplier's response, you might want to take steps to reduce your water's bromate level at home. You can do this by installing a suitable water treatment system. - After installing a suitable filter, test the water treated by the system to confirm that the filter has worked and the concentration of bromate is lower. ⚠ Other Ways You Might Be Exposed To Bromate Aside from drinking water containing bromate, there is only one other way that you might be exposed to this disinfection byproduct: through eye contact with ozonated water, such as from washing or showering. Bromate isn't present anywhere else in the environment, so your risk of exposure to this disinfection byproduct is solely linked to your water supply. 📑 Final Word: Removing Bromate From Water Your water supplier doesn't produce bromate deliberately, but if you think they're not doing enough to reduce bromate formation, you might want to take matters into your own hands. There are a few different ways to reduce or remove bromate in your water at home, including: - Reverse osmosis systems - Activated carbon filters - Anion exchange systems Choose a filtration system that's capable of reducing at least 80% of bromate in your water, and make sure to buy a product that has plenty of positive customer feedback. MASSIVE LORE DUMP, AS PROMISED, I'm high as shit so I hope I conveyed my vision wel
using my tag list just in case
Tag list: @dearly-beeloved @camellias-and-coriander @rebel-wolf13 @sunstar-of-the-north @lysandreslittlechatot @goldenworldsabound @edencantstopfallininlove @adoredbyalatus @dorothys-wife @faerie-circle-ships @kylars-princess @little-miss-selfships
Okay so as far as I've got, everything started when some "heavenly matter" fell to Earth. It was humanoid but possessed no organs or indicators that it was at all a sapient being.
So of course it gets dragged off and every researcher on the planet NEEDS to get their hands on it. So humanity does its thing where "we don't know what it is but let's find out what we can do with it.
A few month or a year later comes first contact with aliens who show up and are like "So that stuff came here, right?" And once the semantics of 'holy fuck, aliens' wore off humanity was like "oh the heavenly matter? Yeah, neat stuff, been playing around with possibilities, why?" And the aliens are like "Do you want space kaiju? Because that's how you get space kaiju." "What does THAT mean?" "You'll find out if you don't stop fucking with it."
And then they leave and of course humanity doesn't listen. And then giant space kaiju DO start showing up. Which means humanity does what humanity does and tries to build giant robots. Giant artificial cyborgs is more like it. Whatever they're mechs. Later the call them Angels seeing as how they're made out of the "heavenly matter"
They're supposed to be fitted with an AI but the AI keeps getting rejected. Lo and behold, the thing has created a brain and has it's own consciousness. This proves to be extremely interesting and troublesome because there is little to no communication. It may as well be a newborn baby. An AI program is created to give them an instant crash course in the basics of humanity but it's still difficult to communicate with them because they can't speak (no vocal chords) and they can barely move on their own. Eventually one manages to tap into a network (what kind I do not know) Bluetooth style and requests a neural link with a human being. It will be absolutely permanent, there will be a person in your head at all times, and the connection can't be broken until both of them die.
Sounds good let's do it.
So they start trying to link the Angels up with people but they find out that compatibility is difficult to discern. After a while it's discovered that certain people with cognitive degeneration or imbalanced brain chemicals take to the link almost immediately. THAT'S a secret they keep under wraps, along with the fact that it's a legitimate treatment that works at the price of you never having personal privacy again.
Anyway, a company is born called -gestures bc I've got nothing rn- that becomes the face of the project. It's made up of multiple nations of the world as to discourage the Angels as weapons of war. Which would eventually have happened if the space kaiju didn't actually show up.
The ones that had been neutrally linked to an Angel were instructed to enter the (very gross and squishy and slimy) inside so that a full neural link could be completed. And then it was monster ass kicking time. The Angels made perfect weapons against the Kaiju and the aliens from first contact came by like "we have literally never seen anyone crazy enough to do what it is you're doing, teach us because these things have been wrecking us forever,"
And so the corporation expands all over the world and out into various civilizations through space.
And so being a pilot is COOL now, you're a hero, a sports star, a celebrity and public figure. There are usually three to five pilots in one base (which is the building they keep the mechs in as well as a building so huge it's literally a self contained community for employees and pilots to live in for the sake of convenience. Anyway the company is like the biggest deal on the planet.
The way they scout for pilots is to find someone with an abysmal psych case file and cross reference it with their cognitive ability. Then they swoop in like "I know life's hard sweetie? Don't you want to be healed? Don't you want to be a star?" And suddenly there's a new idol to fawn over. The Angels are just as popular, sentient mechs are hype as fuck. the pairs go on becoming full on celebrities.
The neural link itself is a two way mental connection between the Angel and the pilot. They hear feel and see the same things and hear each other's thoughts. It's the ultimate commitment because it can never be broken.
When pilots are out or need their Angel's presence without lugging a giant 40 foot tall (absolute MINIMUM, They can go as big as 80 feet) mech around, they have a neural Bluetooth speaker attached to their own person because they do meetups and talk shows and all that other bullshit.
Anyway, Sariel is an aerial unit, so he's got big angel wings (shhhh let's not think about the mass production EVAs for a second) and he's only 40 feet tall. He's got charm but in a rough sort of way. He's kind of a jackass but a playful one.
I'll talk about my insert on the design art.
Tumblr media
So uh
I got got by this post
Tumblr media
so...
potential new oc f/o just dropped 👉👈
ABSOLUTELY ripping off the concept of religious themes in mecha series, he's like... a giant sentient mech. That has flesh also? And his designated name is Sariel.
I need to put like, an actual plot together because I need a convoluted narrative to make a dynamic
But yeah >:I

Description: If you have a fatty liver, you are going to love my new diet and detox program that helps dissolve liver fat, lessen fatigue, relieve muscle pain, and finally lose weight.First though, the bad news
Nearly two BILLION people worldwide have a condition known as fatty liver disease, and the scary part is that most of them have no idea they have it!A fatty liver takes years off your life. Even worse, it damages your quality of life by making you overweight and bloated, prematurely aging your skin and body, and forcing you to live with unnecessary pain and fatigue. In fact, it’s become the number one health condition on the planet, and it’s getting worse every day, affecting nearly a third of all adults. But I promise, there’s a good chance you can do something about it, even if you were told otherwise. That’s because around 80% of all fatty liver cases are reversible when you follow the right program. You may be able to naturally heal your body and significantly reduce your symptoms, just like I did.Statistics say if you live in the US or Canada, there’s a 1 in 3 chance you have fatty liver, even if you were never formally diagnosed. If you experience ANY of these risk factors, your liver is literally crying for help
If you answered yes to any of the above, and you are over age 45, there’s a higher than average chance you have fatty liver, which means this page was specifically written for you.Ignore liver problems, and you risk making your condition worse, plus you increase your chance of getting something even more unwelcome down the road, like cirrhosis, diabetes, heart attack, stroke, or liver cancer.I’m not trying to scare you, but this is serious, and you really want to take care of your liver, especially if you are overweight or have any physical pain. I didn’t figure out what was happening to me until after many months, and to be honest, it almost killed me.Liver issues are NOT something you want to brush aside or “leave till later.” And believe me, they’re not going to fix themselves. You must take immediate action, because quite honestly, you may be living on borrowed time.Fatty liver is the fastest growing medical condition in the world right now, even bigger than diabetes, which is pretty staggering. It affects nearly 1/3 of all men and women, and can be found wherever there is an abundance of junk-food, stress, a sedentary lifestyle, and people living in a toxic environment. That’s scary, because the liver is considered by many to be one of the most important organs in your entire body.It filters and eliminates toxins like alcohol, pollution, preservatives, and chemicals from your blood, acting like a giant filter, keeping the inner workings of your body clean and pure. You probably know that already, but you might not realize everything else your liver does, and how critical it is to your well being, health, even your looks
Your liver performs over 400 different functions, which it normally does well
but there’s a kicker, and that’s when the fat content goes above 5% and it turns into fatty liver disease. At that point, your body starts to go haywire and you experience such a long list of seemingly unrelated ailments, it’s hard to imagine they’re all being caused by the same thing.
I’ll say that again because it’s very important
When the fat content of your liver gets over 5% (and many people are up in the 10% – 15% range) it’s stops working correctly, and you end up with a ton of health issues you can no longer ignore
Vision problems, baggy eyes, fatigue, inflammation, insomnia, belly fat, joint-pain, abdominal cramps, and brittle hair to name just a few. All are symptoms of an unhealthy liver that’s literally clogged-up with fat. There are multiple reasons so many people are getting fatty liver, but the biggest by far has to do with our modern-day, over-processed, preservative-filled diet. Food these days is cheap and convenient, but like your parents probably taught you, you get what you pay for.You might save some money today, but the cost down the line is a poisoned liver, overloaded with fat, sugar, alcohol, and processed junk (not to mention additives, pesticides, and chemical preservatives). When the liver becomes poisoned, two VERY BAD things happen
1. Your body starts storing fat: If you’ve been wondering why you are gaining weight all of a sudden, a likely culprit is a fatty liver, which throws your blood sugar out of whack, and puts you at risk for inflammation, insulin resistance, and diabetes.2. Your blood becomes toxic: When toxic blood travels to your other organs (heart, lungs, skin, and especially your brain), it poisons your entire body. That explains the mental fog, skin issues, high cholesterol, joint-pain, clogged arteries, and frequent headaches you may be experiencing. If any of those things are happening to you, consider it a wake up call to finally do something about it, and an opportunity to get healthy. You may have heard there’s no official cure for fatty liver. That’s what my doctor told me. But I assure you, in many cases, there is a safe and reliable way to reverse it, and heal your body at the same time.I should know, because I did it myself, 100% naturally, without the need for any drugs or expensive doctors visits or starving myself on the latest fad diet. And that LONG list of symptoms? They just disappear once you restore your liver function
And of course there are many improvements you can’t see, but you know are happening nonetheless:It’s really important for you figure this all out as soon as possible because
Like I said before, the “official” story is that there’s no cure for fatty liver disease, which means you won’t get much help (or sympathy) from your doctor. In fact
1. They might even blame you for your condition. When it comes to fatty liver, diabetes, heart problems, and weight issues, many doctors blame the patient, saying they have no self-control or they don’t exercise enough. The fact is though, most doctors refuse to admit how toxic our world has become, or how difficult it is to know which foods are actually healthy with all the conflicting information out there. 2. Misdiagnosis is common. The symptoms and physical ailments caused by fatty liver are so widespread and can appear so unrelated that your doctor may try to treat your SYMPTOMS just to move you through the system (and out of their office). This could actually make you much WORSE because any drug they prescribe is just one more toxin your already struggling liver has to deal with.3. The information you receive is generic and useless. That’s what happened with me
My doctor kind of shrugged his shoulders after diagnosing me and handed me a photocopied pamphlet with generic info that wasn’t even specific to my condition. There was nothing about how I got it or how to get rid of it.My name is Susan Peters. I’m an author, internet researcher, and health advocate. In 2015, I was personally diagnosed with fatty liver, which quite frankly shocked me.I was never what you would consider fat. I always assumed my diet was good, and that my liver was healthy, but it turns out, I was wrong. One morning, I woke up with a weird pain in my abdomen. I thought maybe I pulled a muscle working in the garden.I tried to ignore it, but over the next month, it got more inflamed and the pain spread to my shoulder.
At that point, everything just seemed to snowball
I had trouble sleeping, which made me tired and fatigued, and I started calling in sick because I couldn’t concentrate while I was at work. Then the weight gain started, and before I knew it, I was up a whopping 31 pounds. I felt slow and bloated all the time, like my food wasn’t digesting. None of my clothes fit anymore, which made me depressed.Even worse, my skin broke out like when I was a teenager, and I started getting rashes on my hand, which I found out later were a form of low-grade eczema.I knew something was wrong, because I had honestly never felt so bad in my life. But when I went in to see my doctor, he couldn’t figure it out either.I ended up going through a battery of blood-tests, X-rays, examinations, and a very expensive CT scan to finally get the the bottom of it.There are three main types of fatty liver disease people get
Nearly 1/3 of the worlds population is affected by at least one of these, which means there’s a very good chance you have fatty liver, even if you were never formally diagnosed. The good news is that in many cases, fatty liver is a reversible condition, if you take care of it early.I begged my doctor for help, but instead of giving me a treatment plan that would reverse the damage, or telling me how to start supporting my liver, he literally told me there was nothing he could do.He offered to put me on medication, but admitted there were side-effects. Plus it would only help my symptoms, and not the root cause of the problem.I don’t know about you, but I’m too young to just give up hope. I have a family that depends on me, and the thought of suffering from painful liver disease was simply too much.So I decided to take my health into my own hands and do something about it before it was too late and my liver was permanently damaged
I devoted the last few years to figuring out exactly why people get fatty liver and how to treat it naturally, without any dangerous or expensive drugs.I interviewed patients, doctors, and specialists. I studied liver function and nutrition. And since I really had nothing to lose, I used myself as a test subject and tried every diet, cleanse, detox, supplement, and technique that seemed like it might actually work.In spite of what my doctor told me, I discovered a very specific dietary program that thousands of people were already using to successfully treat their fatty liver. It’s safe, and also extremely effective, because it deals with the root cause of the problem instead of just the symptoms. But that’s wasn’t all I learned
The next time I saw him, he was shocked since not all his patients recover from liver problems like I did. He said it looked like I would be one of the lucky ones, but I knew better
It was about me figuring out how to reverse my condition when my doctor couldn’t help. It was discovering the truth about why people get fatty liver, and ultimately, how to get rid of it.Depending on what’s wrong with you and how advanced your condition is, there’s a very good chance you can heal yourself like I did. You can almost certainly lessen your pain, and possibly have a complete recovery. Many people start feeling better in 2 – 4 weeks after following the steps I did. That’s because the liver is one of the few organs able to regenerate itself, and naturally reverse damage from your past. When you understand how it works, you can get back to having a normal life again, without drugs or fatigue or any of the painful complications that fatty liver brings.Since I began this journey, I’ve met hundreds of other people who achieved the same thing.Over the past few years, I’ve studied fatty liver intently, why people get it, and how they can get rid of it. I was even able to reverse my own condition. I was surprised there was nothing available to help people who have this, especially since it’s so widespread. So I took everything I learned, and with my friend and co-author Jonathan Mizel, we released an easy-to-follow program called Reverse Your Fatty Liverℱ.
If you have any of those symptoms and want to experience relief, you will want to try this for yourself, because I believe it’s the best program on the market. You’ll learn all that and more in the Reverse Your Fatty Liverℱ program. When you get it, you will finally understand how to
Stop spending your hard-earned money on pain medication, sleeping pills, energy drinks, skin cremes, or anything else to feel better. You aren’t fixing the root cause, you are simply dealing with the symptoms. Your liver will keep getting worse, and you will need to take greater and greater doses just to get relief.I should know. I spent thousands of dollars to COVER up my problems since I didn’t understand why they were happening in the first place. It was only when I discovered the truth, how it occurs and how to naturally eliminate it, that I was able to get lasting relief, and finally feel like my old self again.Listen, I don’t have super willpower or extra strength or anything special like that. All I had was a genuine desire to feel better and get back to my old life again. If you sincerely want that too, this program was created specifically for you. It can help you improve your health across the board. You’ll look better and feel better and possibly add years to your life.In fact, there’s zero downside to getting this taken care of, especially if you have any of the symptoms listed above. That’s what this program shows you how to do. But don’t take it from me

ACTUALLY, you guys WILL listen to my Bruce & Officer Martinez brain rot because they have Peak " grumpy sunshine " and " asshole sunshine" dynamic and I'm not letting it go
Here's the thing about Jim Gordon; He has patience; He has tact. But he's also a petty shit, and God almighty, he WARNED Batman to stop his solo crime busting for extra dangerous cases
So yes; He gestures to Martinez, sugar cream on his moustache, files overfilling his arms. He tries to wave. They fall everywhere. ''This is your divine punishment "
"... Did you really just refer to Martinez as a punishment?"
" Honestly, I'm just happy to be included!"
Martinez is still SUPER sketchy about Batman, but of course he freaks out in the Batmobile; Yes, it's from the back-seat, but it still MATTERS, - " You know, my aunt is actually a mechanic, and-"
And that's the second thing Bruce writes about him in his profile journal; First thing being 'Talks too much.' Second is Family man.
But he actually listens to everything because it's comforting to know Gotham allows some love to survive.
And Bruce REFERENCES all stories. When they investigate different sources he's like " This is a professional dismemberment. We should ask your brother's opinion"
" My brother?" " I'd ask mine, but I don't have one." " No asshole I mean - you know my brother's a surgeon? You listen to me?" " I always listen."
FIGHTING OVER THE RADIO! GIVE IT TO ME! BECAUSE YOU JUST KNOWWWW BRUCE PLAYS THREE DAYS GRACE AND SKILLET AND MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE
" you listen to this shit??? Unironically?? THIS is REAL music" and then-
" GIMME GIMME GIMME A MAN AFTER MIDNIGHT-"
And also a ton of Nicki Minaj. " PULL UP IN THE MONSTER AUTOMOBILE GANGSTA-"
Bruce almost rearranges his whole skeleton right there; Martinez eventually figures out that it's Bruce's special interest so he apologises, " I'm sorry I called you out on your terrible taste. We can listen to that Bridge song or whatever"
*shaking with rage* " It's. Not. Called. That."
Literally give me Martinez whining Bruce's ear off until they reach a drive through, and Bruce is just standing there like a STATUE
Martinez leveled up to front seats and is rubbing his hands together like a greedy gremlin, but Bruce does Not move. " Welcome to Bat Burger can I take your order? Hello?" And Bruce is just. Petrified
" Can I had- have, can I - um,"
" what was that?"
" ... Burger"
He pins Martinez face to headboard and makes him SWEAR he won't tell anyone about it but Martinez is too busy laughing his ass off
Martinez always talking about Bruce, - He gave my sister a job as a security guard after she got out of prison. Murdering her rapist, you know how it is
"... I don't, actually." " Well yeah, you grew up in the good part of town, probably" "There's no good part. Only good coincidences."
"... Oh yeah, you're DEFINETLY rich."
Martinez and Selina strangers to enemies, 500k words, slow burn.
Martinez is a dog boy and she's a cat girl. It was expected. She kicks his seat in the Batmobile and he readjusts his chair as LOW as possible just to annoy her
" Crazy cat lady KNOWS something. "
" Don't call her that."
" I don't have to, her smell does it for me, - wait. Are you... Are you HOT for her? SERIOUSLY?"
And so what if Bruce's fast feels hot under his cowl? " Now's not really the time for a jealous scene."
" Oh I'M not jealous, bro. She's in your pants, I'm your emergency contact and organ donor. We aren't even in the same highway."
" ...When did you do that?"
" We don't have time to talk about all that-"
Martinez super casually mentioning he knows Bruce's identity. " Thanks for your help, Mr. Wayne"
[SHOCKED SILENCE]
" How... How did you?"
" BRO. I'd know that jawline in death."

tell us abt science avemmmmmmmmm i love when ppl know things :]
oh man thats very wide criteria um. uhhhhhh right now i have scattered all over my bed all of my bio-organic chemistry notes i SHOULD BE STUDYING RIGHT NOW but anyway. lets see.
alrigghhttt so. biology is absolutely fascinating in the way everything fits together chemically and everything is repurposed in new ways that arose out of complete chance in early evolution. in so many different situations you can find examples of segments of chemical building blocks repurposed for different roles. common structural motifs such as phosphate groups or carbon rings or carboxylate (CO2-) groups are so ubiquitous in biochemistry and thats such an asset to your biology because it can pick apart sources of certain molecular groups and cut them up and rearrange them in just the way it needs to get certain products.
and the way it does that is so astoundingly complex and that's through metabolic pathways which are made possible by enzymes. so the thing about enzymes is that they are complex large molecules that are able to hold smaller molecules in really specific orientations so that chemical reactions can proceed both WAY faster (catalysis) and with way greater specificity, meaning that they can prevent unwanted byproducts by being produced instead of one specific target molecule. this is in comparison to pure laboratory synthesis to build a molecule, which is way slower by virtue of not having evolved the most efficient way to do a reaction– it's just chemists doing reactions in a certain order to make sure they receive the product they want based on how those reactions will take place. but enzymes force molecules into specific orientations so that getting the wrong outcome isn't even a consideration.
there's pockets of certain molecular groups in very specific orientations within enzymes that act as latching on points for the molecule the enzyme is targeting. and then there are other groups that are built in such a way that they can proceed with a specific chemical reaction in a precisely targeted location. it forces a reaction to happen in that specific location, and also to happen immediately when it might otherwise be determined by how likely a molecule is to bump into another in a very specific way. which is often.... extremely unlikely. there's chemical reactions that would take MILLIONS OF YEARS without their specific enzyme to catalyze them. we have even identified enzymes that are so efficient that they literally could not cause their respective chemical reactions to proceed any faster without messing with the literal physics of our universe.
in fact! one such "perfect enzyme" is beta-lactamase, which is an enzyme that bacteria evolved to break apart OTHER enzymes found in antibiotics that disrupt the formation of bacterial cell walls. you might be familiar with it– it's the source of one type of antibiotic resistance in bacteria, and it's the reason MRSA is so dangerous. thankfully, there are enzymes that have been evolved to combat the enzymes that the BACTERIA evolved, and these are what are used in treatments for antibiotic-resistant bacteria. it's a literal evolutionary, biological arms race.
so you can see how it's really quite incredible that evolution was able to produce something that is SO GOOD at its job, and that really accounts for much of the reason life exists as we know it. and it's all because in the beginning of things, way back before even single celled organisms existed, atoms were colliding to form molecules that collided with each other in happenstance ways, until chains of molecules were built up that just so happened to collide until they formed more complex chains that interacted with each other in more complex ways... in fact, that early molecular evolutioni s the focus of my bio-organic professor's research! which i hope to maybe work on this upcoming summer.
but anyway. half-coherent biochemistry infodump for you. idk if i repeated things a lot or whatever im not reading it again enjoy <3

Fluorine (9): The topmost of the halogens, a pale yellow gas at room temperature. It's quite toxic, pollutes horribly and reacts violently to almost everything, but just like older sister chlorine, fluorine can, with proper use of chemistry, be domesticated. In this case, one of fluorine's biggest uses is as a key component in the chemical polytetrafluoroethylene - or in layman's terms, Teflon.
Carbon (6): Absolute overachiever of an element. Owing to being immensely common, it is in literally everything - "organic compound" is a very complicated definition and asking is a good way to start an argument, but in most cases it just means any compound with carbon, because odds are decent some living thing will have it. Carbon also fueled industry (and sometimes still does) as coal, and compressed it forms diamonds, although frankly diamonds are overrated as gemstones and get by on very good PR.

I request some Weiss finding out she's on the spectrum after Ruby and Penny... open her eyes so to speak.
((Okay but neurodivergent!Weiss is so underrated and needs more love, thank you for requesting this!
Btw, instead of saying “on the spectrum,” it’s totally cool to just use “autistic,” or “neurodivergent” to be more broad. I’m not sure of the consensus among the wider autistic community, but “on the spectrum” has always felt like a euphemism to me, when there’s no need to dance around the word “autistic,” so feel free to use it! 😊 ))
Weiss wasn’t sure how she’d managed to get roped into hanging out with Ruby and Penny in the Beacon library so often, but with every passing “study date,” she’d become content with just sitting and listening to the two girls talk while Weiss read from a textbook or wrote an essay. Their chatter was great background noise, as Weiss had adapted to living with the rest of Team RWBY by managing to do everything with some sort of chaos going on in the background, and that included schoolwork. She didn’t really engage in conversation during these study dates, as Ruby and Penny were content with her company while Weiss did her best to be academically productive with her time.
Today, however, the topic of conversation tugged at Weiss’ attention. There was usually an intense focus that would overtake her when it came to studying, like she was viewing her crystal clear text book on a blurry background and nothing could breach her attention. But Ruby had said something to Penny that made Weiss’ ears burn:
“Oh yeah, I do that all the time!” Ruby said. “Like, it’s super embarrassing sometimes, but if some asks me about my weapon I’m like BLAGH! Word vomit.”
“Just like how I infodump about bugs,” Penny said with a bright smile. “They are so interesting, especially the kind that fly or are bioluminescent.”
“Yeah! I remember that time you infodumped about fireflies for, like, thirty minutes!”
Weiss looked up from her book and listened to the two for a moment. Infodump? “What’s infodump?”
Ruby turned, her silver eyes lighting up when she heard Weiss chime in. “Oh! It’s a thing that’s common with neurodivergent brains.” She made her point by pointing to her temple. “Something that captures your interest so much that you get the urge to just go on and on about it.”
“Neurodivergent?” Weiss asked.
“Like how I’m autistic,” Penny said with a nod, “And Ruby is autistic and has ADHD.”
“And dyslexia,” Ruby added.
“And dyslexia,” Penny agreed.
“My brain has trouble being a brain sometimes,” Ruby said with a grin.
“Ohhh, okay,” Weiss said with a nod, understanding a bit better now. “So when you, like, talk about Crescent Rose or fairy tales for a really long time, that’s you infodumping?”
“Yeah!” Ruby said. “It’s fun, like...writing an essay, just...saying it as it comes to you.”
Weiss glanced at her dust theory essay to her right. Or, well, her “outline” for her dust theory essay. It was more of just a piece of notebook paper for her to put word vomit while she...
Hang on...
“I think I’ve done that, actually,” Weiss admitted, remembering back to a couple days ago. She had just finished reading a book about dust theory. Not a required reading, but something she just picked up for fun (yes, she is a nerd and Weiss was content with that). Since she knew Pyrrha was super interested in dust theory as well, Weiss went to her and talked all about the book. Pyrrha had listened kindly and bounced questions off of Weiss, but Weiss had pretty much dominated that interaction. That realization really hit her when, after she had finished talking, Pyrrha had giggled and said, “Wow, when you get interested in something, you dive in 100-percent, huh? That’s cool!”
Weiss explained that example, and Ruby’s eyes seemed to sparkle under the library’s fluorescent lights. “That’s exactly what it’s like! Let’s see, uhm...okay, when you’re doing something that you really like, do you focus on it for hours on end without thinking about anything else?”
“Well, yeah,” Weiss said, never having thought much of it. She was just doing that a minute ago, of course.
“But like, hours,” Ruby reiterated. “And you focus so hard you forget to eat or drink or go to the bathroom because you literally can’t think about or do anything else.”
“I mean, doesn’t everyone do that?” Weiss asked with an uncertain shrug.
Ruby simply stared at her in response, her jaw hanging open.
“That actually is uncommon,” Penny chimed in, missing the confused tension that radiated off of Ruby. “What you are experiencing is called hyperfixation. It occurs when your brain locks onto a single source of mental stimulation that triggers your brain’s chemical reward system and maintains that focus for as long as it can in an effort to continue to reap rewards in the form of firing neurotransmitters. This can cause your conscious mind to miss other common bodily functions and signals, like hunger or the need to urinate.”
“You know a whole lot about things you can’t do yourself, Penny,” Ruby said, both as an observation and a compliment.
“Thank you! The organic person’s mind is complicated and fascinating!”
“Yeah...” Weiss agreed, absorbing all the information Penny had just given her, all about neurotransmitters and whatnot. “I do those things a lot, actually.”
Ruby then slammed her hands palms-down on to the table and trained her eyes on Weiss’ with a serious determination. “Does your brain’s immediate response to any form of rejection include an all-encompassing feeling of dread and a blazing hatred of your own existence that makes you want to punch the nearest wall and scream out the nearest window until your heart and/or voice gives out?”
Weiss stared back at Ruby with wide eyes. “I, uhh...” Then two seconds later, she had an answer, and her shoulders dropped along with her face, which settled into a begrudged but well-worn scowl directed in no particular direction. “Yeah. That was my entire childhood.”
“That’s depressing!” Penny said. “And also another common symptom called Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria.”
“It’s like regular rejection,” Ruby said. “Except more sensitive, and dysphoric!”
“I got that,” Weiss said with an understanding nod. “So...what I’m hearing is...I should see a professional.”
“Wrestler?” Ruby asked.
“Mental health professional,” Weiss corrected.
“Oh nice! Maybe you can be brain cousins with us!”
“Brain cousins?”
“ADHD and autism overlap in many ways and are often comorbid,” Penny noted. “But that does not actually make us related.”
“That would be super weird!” Ruby added.
Weiss looked down and nodded. “Okay. You two have given me a lot to think about.”
“Sorry about that,” Ruby said sympathetically.
“No, in a good way,” Weiss assured her.
“Oh!”

Can’t Leave
Y/N is a HYDRA scientist. Pietro Maximoff is her latest patient. Will Y/N be able to keep Pietro safe in the HYDRA base, even when her own life is in danger?
masterlist
Tumblr media
You stare at the ceiling, exhaling softly. Machines beep and whir behind you, and you try to remember everything you were supposed to do before the soldiers arrived. Have needles ready for blood transfusions, check. Make sure the x-ray scanners are functioning, check. Have all the necessary documents and paperwork that are scattered about your desk, check. This is the life of a HYDRA scientist- procedure after procedure.
You weren’t always like this, someone wishing fervently that the end of the day would come so they could block out everything that had just happened from their mind. When things had gotten bad all those years ago, HYDRA had come knocking and you had, unfortunately, answered them. It wasn’t entirely your fault- you needed a way to support your family and HYDRA needed a new scientist. The deal could practically sell itself. It doesn’t matter that you were forced to take part in procedures that weren’t exactly up to the proper ethical standards, or that although the job was advertised as ordinary you knew you would be killed the second you put up your two weeks’ notice. HYDRA was your life now, and you would do well to stand by it.
A knock at the door distracts you from your gloomy thoughts. “Come in.” You call, and the soldiers you’ve been expecting march in, dragging with them one unconscious man. He appears to be about your age, and he’s clearly been drugged so he would be easier to transport. The soldiers strap the man into a hospital bed and then march out just as quickly, leaving behind a few men as guards in case this particular patient tried anything too risky.
You prepare a few sensors and apply them along the man’s arms and legs, then turn to a nearby screen. As the man begins to stir and wake, you study his vital signs. All seems well, except for the fact that his heart is beating far faster than any normal human man. This is to be expected- Pietro Maximoff has been given superhuman abilities, and so he will behave as superhumans do.
The man is fully awake now, and watches you with furtive eyes as you ignore him in favor of studying the readouts in front of you. You prepare a needle, then turn to him. “This is a penicillin shot. It will help with your recovery.” The man looks at you in confusion. “You know, for a HYDRA doctor you seem less crazy than the others. Are you actually a doctor or have they brought in a nurse to placate me and make it seem like HYDRA’s doing the right thing?”
One of the guards struts over to Pietro and glares down at him. “I would advise you to hold your tongue, Maximoff. Remember that you signed up for this.” Pietro returns the glare. “I remember that I was a little forced for a volunteer. Tell me, are all your human test subjects kidnapped or are you just low on new victims.” The guard draws his fist back to strike Pietro, but you fling out a hand to stop him.
“Corporal! The goal is to check on his vitals, not try to damage him. Please return to your post by the door.” The guard looks at you with blank eyes. “He insulted you as well as HYDRA. He deserves punishment.” You shake your head calmly. “The procedures you’ve asked me to run do not involve the protection of my ego. They should not involve yours either.” The guard gives Pietro one last icy look, then storms off to stand beside the other guard on the far side of the room.
Pietro looks up at you in bewilderment, then speaks softly. “Why did you do that?” You glance over at him bemusedly. “Do what?” Pietro looks back at the guard, making sure he can’t be heard. “Why did you stop him? No other doctors would have intervened, no matter how healthy they were supposed to be keeping me.” You laugh softly. “I may work for HYDRA, but I’m not completely a monster. I didn’t want to see you get beaten when you were literally tied down.”
Over the next few days, you continue to check in on Pietro. You run his vitals, you give him necessary injections to make sure the newly given powers won’t kill him, and you find time to have conversations with him. You’re not quite sure why you’re so drawn to this metahuman, but the look in his eyes when he sees you is enough to make you realize that he depends on you not only for physical strength, but to make sure he has one bright light in his otherwise dark existence.
A few weeks after the final procedures have taken place, it’s time to start testing what he can do. Pietro refuses to work with any doctors other than you, saying that it’s because the others were more interested in their own gain than actually trying to help him. The HYDRA higher-ups bought it, but you know that in reality, Pietro wants to make sure he uses his powers in front of someone who won’t torture him if he doesn’t do exactly what is wanted of him.
One day, though, he comes into your training session with a wretched look on his face. You walk over to him quickly. “What’s wrong?” Pietro just sighs disgustedly. “All these chemicals they’re forcing into me- they’re not just affecting my mind, now they’re affecting my body, too.” You look at him closer, and realize that he does not look well. He has dark circles under his eyes, his skin looks pale and waxy, and his hair is turning a bleached white.
You frown at him sadly. “I’m sorry about that. I’ll see if there’s any way I can reduce the medications or something to stop that from happening.” You look back at him, a smile starting to form across your lips. “I do like the new look, though. Blond suits you.” He laughs at that. “Good to know.”
Sooner than you’d like, you get a tip-off from a commander that the Maximoff twins will be pulled to take part in some mission, and they won’t be back for a while. You do your best to finish Pietro’s training, making sure that he’ll be able to defend himself if necessary. You hope against hope that he won’t see danger, that he’ll come back to you unharmed.
You shake your head confusedly. Why are you so worried about Pietro? He’s certainly not the first patient you’ve had, nor the first one you’ve been so deeply involved with. What is it about the light-haired man that makes you so captivated by him?
Pietro finds you the second he hears about his upcoming assignment. He says it’s just to make sure that everything is in order and there’s no worry of his organs shutting down or something, but you know why he’s there the second the doors close behind him.
“There’s no chance that I’m ever coming back. You know that- you have to request to be transferred to that base! If you find a way to make it there, at least I know you won’t be gone forever. You know what happens to metahumans on the missions as well as I do- if they ever come back, it’ll be after years. I need you to come.”
You sigh sadly. “Me transferring to that Sokovian base? Pietro, that’s out of the question. I can’t even request what floor of this complex to work in, let alone what base or what country. I appreciate your concern, but I’m afraid you’ll have to go by yourself. At least you’ll have Wanda there, right?” Pietro looks frustrated. “If you stay here by yourself, I won’t be able to protect you, from invasion or HYDRA soldiers alike. If you come with me, I know you’ll be safe.”
You can’t help but laugh at that. “You protecting me? Pietro, are you listening to yourself? When they say you and your sister are the first of the metahuman soldiers, they mean the first to survive the procedures, not the first attempts. I have been saving your life since day one, even if you didn’t realize it. If I go with you, I endanger you because HYDRA will realize that you’re important to me and they’ll find some way to punish you for it.”
Pietro scoffs. “That’s right- don’t want to upset HYDRA. Will your job be on the line?” You look at him with an icy glare. “You think I wanted any of this- that I could just walk out at any time? When I first ‘joined’, my family was on the brink of starvation. If I wanted to save their lives, I had to take HYDRA up. Also, it wasn’t exactly my choice- you tell me whether threats at gunpoint sounds like a comfortable interview to you. I can’t leave this life, no matter what.”
Your tone takes a softer tone. “But you can. When you’re out there, in the base, you’ll probably have fewer guards. Promise me that you’ll try to find a way out. Whatever they’re going to ask you to do, you don’t want to do it. I can guarantee you that.” Pietro takes your hands and pulls you close to him. “I can’t leave you, Y/N.” You look at him, enjoying your last few moments with the man you’ve grown to love. “You have to. Promise me you’ll try to escape?” Pietro sighs, then presses a kiss to the top of your forehead. “I promise.”
After the Maximoff twins are shipped off to the HYDRA research base in Sokovia, you don’t hear anything about them for weeks. You’re given a new project, but somehow you can’t find the energy to be as involved with it as before. When you finally hear that the twins won’t be coming back, you’re not sure whether to be relieved or nervous. Are they safe, or were they discovered? Have they escaped HYDRA’s chains, or were they caught in the act and killed?
Every now and then, you find yourself trapped in a dream. It’s not quite a nightmare, just scraps of memories plucked from your mind and dragged in front of you. You can see yourself working with Pietro, laughing excitedly over his new powers. When you wake up, you can still feel the smile on your lips from that day all that time ago.
You push the thoughts from your head, forcing yourself to get up and get on with the day. Those times are over, and they won’t be coming back. Just as you’re about to head out to the HYDRA labs, you hear a knock on the door. Confused, you go to answer it, and are stunned when you see the blond man waiting for you. “Pietro?”
He casually saunters in. “Miss me?” You laugh and throw your arms around him. “Are you really here?” He looks at you with a smirk. “I got some good advice that I should try and find new job opportunities outside of HYDRA. I’ve come to offer you something like that.” You meet Pietro’s eyes, surprised. “What are you talking about?” His grin could outshine the sun. “There’s a little place I found in the outskirts of Sokovia, somewhere HYDRA won’t be able to find us. I think it’ll work perfectly. All I have to do is one more job for this robot guy, and we’ll be able to live our lives just as we want to.” You beam at him. “Sounds perfect.”
