Swallow me whole, I told the land. For there was no purpose in living when under the weight of light; under that pouring brightness my identity was stripped away; I paled in comparison to the ethereal beings above.
This was first published on Night Sky Press' first issue, Orcanus! Really enjoyed the challenge of writing a scifi piece plus it's now up on my ko-fi!

I was playing with the idea of something like Orcanus Rex but I was feeling too lazy to do the research to see if that might mean anything unintended. I'd almost be surprised if SyFy hasn't got a movie about something similar. Not really Halloween relevant but it's been an off couple days and I wanted to make something I could do quickly. I do imagine the combined abilities could be daunting though.

“SIR! Sergeant Orcanus Marks, 305th Pacifican Regiment, reporting as ordered SIR!” The sound of a lasgun hitting the ground in time with two well-maintained boots was unified, three loud bangs in the same time as the motion of the right arm to the brim of his helmet in a swift movement.
One did not just NOT SALUTE a member of the Emperor’s Angels of Death after all. As Pious sat in the beyond beside the Emperor Himself, and Creed and Yarrick and Cain did His work here upon the materium, the Astartes filled the gap between them.  Back home, not saluting was punishable by flogging if you were lucky.
It was a hard habit to break, and Marks didnt even realize he was doing it until his right hand collided with the brim of his helmet.

Daily Routine of Orcanus Marks (Circa Assignment to Inquisitor Marasco, Ordo Xenos)
0730: Awaken from either nightmares or slightly less bad daydreams, depending on the day. 0735: Mutter prayer to the Emperor that he hasn’t died in his sleep. Realize he has to get up 0740: Roll out of bed, avoiding Sister Hospitaller (on the floor, again) and tiptoe around the Catachan’s booby traps around the door and the bedposts. 0755: Morning repast of recaf (warm if lucky, cold if not) and rations of some form.  0805: Loose half of rations and most of recaf when Inquisitor Marasco storms into the dining room angrily dictating to her recordium servo-skull. Wait till Inquisitor storms back out to attempt again.  0815: Second attempt at breakfast ruined following arrival of most of the rest of Inquisitorial group and their various clashing personalities. Tech Priest Condut mentions needing breakfast is for weak fleshlings. Hospitillar Sister Everdeen (now awake and off the floor) corrects him with a book to the head.  0845: Daily arrangements with team about who’s doing what and when. Once more gets stuck with feeding the Inquisitors small menagerie of xenos species.  0905: Shave and shower. Finds Battle Sister Everdeen curled up in the shower (in full armor) cagily watching the door for “tributes”. Ignore her and use other shower. 0910: One exactly five minute shower and shave. Ignore Battle Sister Everdeen’s comments about rain until her Hospitaller younger sister retrieves her for her own breakfast.
0920: Cleaned and properly de-scented, enters “The Zoo” with various assortments of food for the “vile xenos” aboard.
0925: Five minutes of laughing at the Kroot the Inquisitor made evolve into a facsimile of gryinxes.
0930: Chat with the Felinids. Get backscratch through the bars in return for extra rations for them.
0950: Feedings fully done, cleans off hands and disposes of meat-tray by dropping it into the terfherd pen (alongside a primed krak grenade so they don’t breed too fast from the waste) and goes to Inquisitor’s daily meeting and briefing.
1055: An hour of Inquisitor Marasco telling them which Xenos species they’re going to fuck over this week. No actionable intelligence because they’re still in the Warp, three weeks out from their destination.
1100: Iho stick break with the boys; Gunner Hawthorne, Tech Priest Condut, and “Tripline” the Catachan.
1103: Hawthorne/Tripline armwrestling contest begins. Marks makes his exit.
1130: Equipment maintenance and Imperial Guard regulatory mandates. Leave job half-finished upon arrival of Tech Priest Condut, minus his pants, to “interface with the machine spirits”. Get recaf instead.
1200: Mid-day prayer. Marks thanks the Emperor that he is here, doing this glorious work in His name, and asks him for patience in his duties and with his teammates. Is interrupted as usually halfway through by Battle Sister Everdeen stalking through with her bolter-bow, checking for “ambushes”.
1205: Snack of freshly made bread from the galley with Everdeen. Marks provides sealoid fat as topping.
1230: Lunch in the mess.
1300: Finish equipment and weaponry checks. Condut has gone and Hawthorne is in place instead, working with Tripline on some kind of new explosive device. Marks leaves them too it.
1800: Literally nothing happens. This is the worst part for Marks; having what is basically unlimited free time.
1805: "Contemplation of the Emperor” with Battle Sister Everdeen.
1830: Dinner. Hawthorn vs Tripline wrestle part 2. “Ripper” Mason shows up for the first time all day, grabs both Everdeen’s asses and punches Condut, feeds her self an entire grox patty in one bite, then vanishes once more to who the God Emperor knows where. Marks makes no comment and finishes his food.
1930: Evening prayer to the Emperor, lead by Inquisitor Marasco. Turns into a tyrade (as always) against the Xenos and the Heretic and the Mutant and almost every other enemy of Man. But mostly the Xenos.
1935: Tyrade ineviatbly ends when Tripline answers the question of “what do we do to the Eldar Witch?” with “We skullfuck her!” Inquisitor’s wrath turns to the Catachan and Marks slips out the back.
2005: “Further Contemplation of the Emperor” with Sister Everdeen. “Ripper” Mason arrives halfway through, joins them, then leaves as if nothing ever happened.
2100: Lacking anything else to do, Marks retires to his bunk ahead of his teammates, effectively passing out.
2113: Nightmares
2120: Wake up from nightmares. Force himself back to sleep.
2230: Awakens when door opens. Hospitaller Everdeen takes her normal place on the floor following her sister’s holy ranting and obsessive candle-burning. Marks rolls over and tries to sleep.
2400: Actual, peaceful dreams.

Mark’s Backstory (for those on mobile)
Orcanus Marks grew up in the shadow of the Emperor; literally. His home on Pacifica, ocean world sporting only a single hive-shrine to the Emperor and Ollianus Pious, savior-saint of the Imperial Guard, was under one of the great statues, so that those who left their house would have the blessed gaze of the leader of mankind looking down upon them at all times. The face of the statue seemed full of hope, as if the Emperor himself were seeing through its chromium eyes at the potential and efficiency below him.
Marks wanted nothing more than to prove the statue right. When he turned of age, he volunteered for the Pacifica Guard, the local arm of the Imperial Guard, one of many young men of Pacifican birth who did so to escape the other inevitable endless toiling in the fishing fleet and aquaculture farms. The Guard was one of the few places that someone with his particular level of mutation (fully functioning gills spaced around his ribs, something rarer among Pacifica’s shrine livers as opposed to the wider planet as a whole) could do his duty to the Imperium without being looked upon with a frown of distaste or the eyes of someone searching for heresy. Quite the contrary; if you could breath as well above water as you could below, then the arms of the the Pacifican elite, the Tide Tyrants, were open and welcoming. For them, it was a gift from the Emperor, and those who bore it would serve him to the fullest of their abilities, by striking from below the waves with precision and with brutality, felling those who approached their home before they could do damage.
And too them Marks went, training with his brothers in arms to save the Imperium from its foes, inside and out. It was from inside that the foe came, as is want in the Segmentum Pacificus.
Slanessh’s tendrils snaked deep into the planet, brought to the peaceful world by the pleasures of an intrepid group of thrill seekers who got too far into their pleasure, setting root and breeding cultists, at first small groups, but then larger, powerful enough to be a danger. An entire section of the shrine was ejected, its corrupted cargo left to the pitiless depths of Pacifica’s world-ocean, the heretics cleansed by the jaws of the beasts below. But still it spread and soon attracted attention from above.
First, a single ship; Slanessh cultists, arriving from the Warp and setting down upon the water in a barely adapted transport craft that barely floated long enough for them to unload into ramshakle boats. They made it to the edge of the sea-mount that the Shrine rested upon before Marks and his unit of Tide Tyrants struck from below, rising from the ocean in the dark to pull startled heretics to a watery grave. Then, more, and worse; a larger force of cultists, and with them Dark Mechanicus forces, machines devoted to the Prince of Pleasure, descended from the skies on wings of fire. The Pacifica Guard were mobilized, the 305th (Marks unit) sent to defend the main statue of the Emperor that stood at the edge of the high-tide zone and the millions of civilians that lived in its shadow.
The fighting was fierce, and slowly the Chaos forces pushed onwards, nearer to the statue. The 305th, an infantry-only special unit, was slaughtered nearly to a man by the heavy armor that the Dark Mechanicus brought with them, falling back in staggered waves higher and higher up the tide-line, eventually meeting up with the hard-pressed 117th Pacifican Armored and their lines of Leman Russ tanks and Basilisk Artillery, but even then they were still forced back. The battle was fierce, explosions and collisions and stray anti-armor weaponry weakening the entire structure of the shrine below the battling factions. Marks, who’d been drafted as an extra gunner on a Basilisk, watched in growing horror as a Hellbrute sporting a monstrous steel phallus between its great mechanical legs and wielding a mighty whip, rose from the water and approached.
The Commissar of the 117th (the 305th had never had one as no Commissar so far had the mutation required to operate fully with them), who’d boarded the Basilisk after his former transport had taken a melta-shot, ordered a valiant charge at the beast; “We’ll ram this gun down it’s damn throat and feed it the Emperor’s holy fire! FORWARD YOU PIG FU-”
And that was the last Marks heard, for the Basilisk surged forward as if kicked by the foot of the Emperor himself, colliding with the Hellbrute and shoving it backwards…and shattering the ground beneath both machines with the force of the impact. The entire section of the hive, a mile-long span of shattered metal, simply collapsed, falling forwards towards the ocean and spilling everyone and everything upon it out and down. The Hellbrute ended up impaled on the raised sword of one of the smaller statues of the Emperor on the next level below, pierced straight through the base, emitting a sound that sounded far too pleasurable to be considered anything but heresy; the Basilisk hit the water and sank, Marks along with it.
How the fall didn’t kill him he wasn’t entirely sure…the water didn’t do much either, but that had more to do with himself than his luck. Marks had always been a champion diver and swimmer, aided by his mutation. Falling into freezing water was no different than sliding into a tub after a long day of work, and the waves welcomed him as they drew down the bodies of his fellows, of fallen cultists, and a hundred thousand tons of shattered shrine, floating him up and away to the shore, escorted by a pod of finless porpesos, semi-telepathic cetaceans and friends of the Guardsmen who fed them daily and played with them on their off hours and of the aquaculture companies that helped supply the shrine with food for its citizens and shipment off world.
And so Marks found himself the last survivor of the victorious 305th, a soldier without a unit.
But of course, Fate is not so kind as to simply let such a tale end there. No…for Marks, the loss of his unit was but the beginning of his troubles.
The Imperium was embroiled in the 13th Black Crusade. As such; the Cadian units that would NORMALLY be used to quell issues in certain sectors of the Galaxy were too busy holding their home ground.
Which was why when an issue flared on the tiny, nearly-unnoticed agriworld of Panem (High Gothic for “bread”, a major export), another member of the Segmentum Pacificus, it was the 117th and 305th Pacifican that were called to aid in the pacification. An uncommon occurrence to say the least, but desperate times…and so they were called forth.
Of course, the 305th and 117th existed only in name; Ocranus Marks was the only living member of both units, and as such, when the Imperium called, Pacifica sent what they asked for. A single battered soldier with his kit and a grudge against cultists. The Administratum seemed not to notice.
Thankfully for Marks, this assignment proved to be just what he needed to feel better; Panem was a bland, nonthreatening agri-world, the populous barely above feral worlders. Some of the populace, particularly their overly-indulgent Capitol, had begun to fall to Chaos. The presence of an unsanctioned latent psyker made everything that much more complicated.
But as always the Hammer of the Emperor came through; the combined forces of the Seattlite 1st through 5th, sporting their brightly colored blue and green uniforms and specialized lasguns, the Cadian 150th (still in system from a previous engagement), and the Pacifican 305th (literally just Marks, and a few locals who turned up to help fight the corruption) rolled over the would-be cultists with the force of an avalanche, leaving none standing and exterminatusing one of the lesser useful Districts on the planets face.
More importantly for Marks, he crossed paths on the battlefield with a strange, slim woman who spoke with accents reminiscent of both Fenris and Catachan and swung a hammer with brutal force.
Situation quelled, Marks expected to be sent home to rebuild his the 305th from the ground up.
Instead, the Great Rift came…and now he is a soldier upon the tides of the Warp, sent wherever the Guard is needed.

Headcanon: Cargo Bat
(Partially for @the-sleeping-book)
Though the creatures of Grimm pose nothing but a dire threat to humanity, they are far from it to the other species of Remnant. Mainly because many lesser creatures dont have complex enough brains to have emotions besides the very basics, and partially because they’re just so small that the Grimm can’t pick them up against the background of human feelings.
Which isn’t to say that animals completely ignore the Grimm in return...quite the contrary. Several species on Remnant have evolved to PREY upon the Grimm. These range from the Hover Foxes of Solitas, to the Orcanus whale of the worlds oceans, to the Sand Stalker of Vacuo.
And, of course...the Cargo Bat of Mistral.  Individually nothing more than a small fuzzy body with big eyes, ears, and a huge pair of wings, the Cargo Bat would be considered cute by most standards. And it is...unless you happen to see a swarm of hundreds, if not thousands, move in synchronization, a single, sonically-connected unit flying in perfect formation. This is where the creature gets its name; huge “feeding flocks” of Cargo Bats will swarm from their caves at the fall of the sun, writhing into the sky and across the terrain until they come across an unfortunate Grimm. The flock then decends, each bat taking hold of a tiny section of the Grimm’s hide...and lift the entire thing into the sky to be devoured in-flight, leaving naught but a howl of surprise and fear on the wind.
Many Mistrali citizens keep small flocks as pets, and as defense against smaller Grimm. There’s additional evidence to support that bat faunus can actually communicate with them in some way, possibly through ultrasonic frequencies.

Drabble: World at War
“SHELLS! SHELLS INBOUND! MARKS, GET YOUR ASS INSIDE!”
No need to tell him twice... Without hesitation, Private First Class Orcanus Marks scrambled through the top hatch of the Marasco Main Battle Tank he’d been hitching a ride on through the slopping, green-laced hills of northern Vale. He didn’t particularly WANT To climb inside the loud, hot, smelly machine, but it was either that or get torn to shreds by the shell that was being flung his way, and Marks was willing to deal with the inside of a Marasco if it meant having two feet of armor between him and a shell.
He crashed down into the compartment, nearly landing on the tank’s gunner, a compact girl even younger than he was. A check showed the crew was of similar age. Teen girls driving an MBT. That was the state of the war for you.
“Oh. You guys must be from Saunders.” He noted, rising slightly. “Thanks for the cover.”
“Don’t mention it-” The commander noted.
WHAM.
The whole tank shook like a church bell and Marks could hear metal clanging off the side. They’d taken a hit from something big and the armor had eaten the blast and shrapnel, thankfully.
The foot soldier pulled himself upwards towards the turret, gripping the heavy bolter that sat semi-exposed in the top of the vehicle to allow the crew to engage with a smaller weapon than the massive 520mm Arc Shock Cannon that was the Marasco’s main armament. The Bolter itself was not something to scoff at, being as big in ammunition size as some Vale main guns.
Speaking of...
He glanced through the gun port, seeing dark shapes on the horizon. Not the jerky, hard-edged silhouettes of Mantle vehicles, no...too smooth.
Over the radio crackled the voice of the operations commander, one of the newer Generals to come from the officer training school.
“All Tankery units be advised, we have spotted the rear of Vale’s primary armor column in this theater. Your orders are as follows; engage at will and leave no survivors. Saunders and Pravda, you’re the spearhead, advance and engage. St. Gloriana’s and Kurimonemine will watch your flanks, while Anzio and Orrai bring up the rear. All units; PANZER VOR!”
Marks blinked, trying to make sense of the command he’d just heard. It didn’t really apply to him, he was a foot soldier, not a tanker...but he supposed as long as he was in this tank (and another hit from a shell near-by made it pretty clear he wasn’t getting out any time soon) he might as well help them.
“VALE ARMOR! VALE ARMOR STRAIGHT AHEAD!” He shouted over the sound of the engine. The Marasco’s mighty drive train roared as the driver shoved it into full throttle, accelerating the armored beast to engage this new foe. The main gun roared as the gunner got line of sight on a target; dirt was flung in every direction, the shockwave of the blast rattling the whole vehicle. A plume of smoke and debris rose from the horizion as a Vale vehicle, lightly armored, was torn apart, bits and bodies hurled into the sky.
“Got the bastard!”
“Forward!”
The tank lurched ahead, heading for more prey.
