Orange Extract Market: Global Industry Analysis and Forecast 2023 â 2030
The Global Orange Extract market was estimated at USD 612.44 million in 2021, and is anticipated to reach USD 864.64 million by 2028, growing at a CAGR of 5.05%.
Due to its high alcohol level and intense fruit flavor, orange extract has a longer shelf life than other flavorings, making it a popular option in the flavoring industry. This backs the demand for orange extract to increase in the market. In addition, orange extract has a powerful scent and is used to infuse mousses, candies, and chocolates with a zesty, reviving citrus flavor, as well as salty foods like chicken, rice, and fish. The demand for orange extract in the global market is boosted by the expanding food and beverage sector as well as the wide range of uses for the extract. Additionally, orange extract is used in the cosmetics business in addition to the food industry.

Housing is a labor issue
There's a reason Reagan declared war on unions before he declared war on everything else â environmental protection, health care, consumer rights, financial regulation. Unions are how working people fight for a better world for all of us. They're how everyday people come together to resist oligarchy, extraction and exploitation.
Take the 2019 LA teachers' strike. As Jane McAlevey writes in A Collective Bargain, the LA teachers didn't just win higher pay for their members! They also demanded (and got) an end to immigration sweeps of parents waiting for their kids at the school gate; a guarantee of green space near every public school in the city; and on-site immigration counselors in LA schools:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/04/23/a-collective-bargain/
Unionization is enjoying an historic renaissance. The Hot Labor Summer transitioned to an Eternal Labor September, and it's still going strong, with UAW president Shawn Fain celebrating his members victory over the Big Three automakers by calling for a 2028 general strike:
https://www.teenvogue.com/story/uaw-general-strike-no-class
The rising labor movement has powerful allies in the Biden Administration. NLRB general counsel Jennifer Abruzzo is systematically gutting the "union avoidance" playbook. She's banned the use of temp-work app blacklists that force workers to cross picket lines:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/07/30/computer-says-scab/#instawork
She's changed the penalty for bosses who violate labor law during union drives. It used to be the boss would pay a fine, which was an easy price to pay in exchange for killing your workers' union. Now, the penalty is automatic recognition of the union:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/09/06/goons-ginks-and-company-finks/#if-blood-be-the-price-of-your-cursed-wealth
And while the law doesn't allow Abruzzo to impose a contract on companies that refuse to bargain their unions, she's set to force those companies to honor other employers' union contracts until they agree to a contract with their own workers:
https://onlabor.org/gc-abruzzo-just-asked-the-nlrb-to-overturn-ex-cell-o-heres-why-that-matters/
She's also nuking TRAPs, the deals that force workers to repay their employers for their "training expenses" if they have the audacity to quit and get a better job somewhere else:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/09/14/prop-22-never-again/#norms-code-laws-markets
(As with every aspect of the Biden White House, its labor policy is contradictory and self-defeating, with other Biden appointees working to smash worker power, including when Biden broke the railworkers' strike:)
https://pluralistic.net/2023/09/18/co-determination/#now-make-me-do-it
A surging labor movement opens up all kinds of possibilities for a better world. Writing for the Law and Political Economy Project, UNITE Here attorney Zoe Tucker makes the case for unions as a way out of America's brutal housing crisis:
https://lpeproject.org/blog/why-unions-should-join-the-housing-fight/
She describes how low-waged LA hotel workers have been pushed out of neighborhoods close to their jobs, with UNITE Here members commuting three hours in each direction, starting their work-days at 3AM in order to clock in on time:
https://twitter.com/MorePerfectUS/status/1669088899769987079
UNITE Here members are striking against 50 hotels in LA and Orange County, and their demands include significant cost-of-living raises. But more money won't give them back the time they give up to those bruising daily commutes. For that, unions need to make housing itself a demand.
As Tucker writes, most workers are tenants and vice-versa. What's more, bad landlords are apt to be bad bosses, too. Stepan Kazaryan, the same guy who owns the strip club whose conditions were so bad that it prompted the creation of Equity Strippers NoHo, the first strippers' union in a generation, is also a shitty landlord whose tenants went on a rent-strike:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/05/20/the-missing-links/#plunderphonics
So it was only natural that Kazaryan's tenants walked the picket line with the Equity Stripper Noho workers:
https://twitter.com/glendaletenants/status/1733290276599570736?s=46
While scumbag bosses/evil landlords like Kazaryan deal out misery retail, one apartment building at a time, the wholesale destruction of workers' lives comes from private equity giants who are the most prolific source of TRAPs, robo-scabbing apps, illegal union busting, and indefinite contract delays â and these are the very same PE firms that are buying up millions of single-family homes and turning them into slums:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/02/08/wall-street-landlords/#the-new-slumlords
Tucker's point is that when a worker clocks out of their bad job, commutes home for three hours, and gets back to their black-mold-saturated, overpriced apartment to find a notice of a new junk fee (like a surcharge for paying your rent in cash, by check, or by direct payment), they're fighting the very same corporations.
Unions who defend their workers' right to shelter do every tenant a service. A coalition of LA unions succeeded in passing Measure ULA, which uses a surcharge on real estate transactions over $5m to fund "the largest municipal housing program in the country":
https://unitedtohousela.com/app/uploads/2022/05/LA_City_Affordable_Housing_Petition_H.pdf
LA unions are fighting for rules to limit Airbnbs and other platforms that transform the city's rental stock into illegal, unlicensed hotels:
https://upgo.lab.mcgill.ca/publication/strs-in-los-angeles-2022/Wachsmuth_LA_2022.pdf
And the hotel workers organized under UNITE Here are fighting their own employers: the hoteliers who are aggressively buying up residences, evicting their long-term tenants, tearing down the building and putting up a luxury hotel. They got LA council to pass a law requiring hotels to build new housing to replace any residences they displace:
https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2023-11-28/airbnb-operators-would-need-police-permit-in-l-a-under-proposed-law
UNITE Here is bargaining for a per-room hotel surcharge to fund housing specifically for hotel workers, so the people who change the sheets and clean the toilets don't have to waste six hours a day commuting to do so.
Labor unions and tenant unions have a long history of collaboration in the USA. NYC's first housing coop was midwifed by the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America in 1927. The Penn South coop was created by the International Ladies Garment Workersâ Union. The 1949 Federal Housing Act passed after American unions pushed hard for it:
http://www.peterdreier.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Labors-Love-Lost.pdf
It goes both ways. Strong unions can create sound housing â and precarious housing makes unions weaker. Remember during the Hollywood writers' strike, when an anonymous studio ghoul told the press the plans was to "allow things to drag on until union members start losing their apartments and losing their houses?"
Vienna has the most successful housing in any major city in the world. It's the city where people of every income and background live in comfort without being rent-burdened and without worry about eviction, mold, or leaks. That's the legacy of Red Vienna, the Austrian period of Social Democratic Workers' Party rule and built vast tracts of high-quality public housing. The system was so robust that it rebounded after World War II and continues to this day:
https://www.politico.eu/article/vienna-social-housing-architecture-austria-stigma/
Today, the rest of the world is mired in a terrible housing crisis. It's not merely that the rent's too damned high (though it is) â housing precarity is driving dangerous political instability:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/06/06/the-rents-too-damned-high/
Turning the human necessity of shelter into a market commodity is a failure. The economic orthodoxy that insists that public housing, rent control, and high-density zoning will lead to less housing has failed. rent control works:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/05/16/mortgages-are-rent-control/#housing-is-a-human-right-not-an-asset
Leaving housing to the market only produces losers. If you have the bad luck to invest everything you have into a home in a city that contracts, you're wiped out. If you have the bad luck into invest everything into a home in a "superstar city" where prices go up, you also lose, because your city becomes uninhabitable and your children can't afford to live there:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/09/27/lethal-dysfunction/#yimby
A strong labor movement is the best chance we have for breaking the housing deadlock. And housing is just for starters. Labor is the key to opening every frozen-in-place dysfunction. Take care work: the aging, increasingly chronically ill American population is being tortured and murdered by private equity hospices, long-term care facilities and health services that have been rolled up by the same private equity firms that destroyed work and housing:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/04/26/death-panels/#what-the-heck-is-going-on-with-CMS
In her interview with Capital & Main's Jessica Goodheart, National Domestic Workers Alliance president Ai-jen Poo describes how making things better for care workers will make things better for everyone:
https://prospect.org/labor/2023-12-13-labor-leader-ai-jen-poo-interview/
Care work is a "triple dignity investment": first, it makes life better for the worker (most often a woman of color), then, it allows family members of people who need care to move into higher paid work; and of course, it makes life better for people who need care: "It delivers human potential and agency. It delivers a future workforce. It delivers quality of life."
The failure to fund care work is a massive driver of inequality. America's sole federal public provision for care is Medicaid, which only kicks in after a family it totally impoverished. Funding care with tax increases polls high with both Democrats and Republicans, making it good politics:
https://www.dataforprogress.org/blog/2021/4/7/voters-support-investing-in-the-care-economy
Congress stripped many of the care provisions from Build Back Better, missing a chance for an "unprecedented, transformational investment in care." But the administrative agencies picked up where Congress failed, following a detailed executive order that identifies existing, previously unused powers to improve care in America. The EO "expands access to care, supports family caregivers and improves wages and conditions for the workforce":
https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/presidential-actions/2023/04/18/executive-order-on-increasing-access-to-high-quality-care-and-supporting-caregivers/
States are also filling the void. Washington just created a long-term care benefit:
https://apnews.com/article/washington-long-term-care-tax-disability-cb54b04b025223dbdba7199db1d254e4
New Mexicans passed a ballot initiative that establishes permanent funding for child care:
https://www.cwla.org/new-mexico-votes-for-child-care/
New York care workers won a $3/hour across the board raise:
https://inequality.org/great-divide/new-york-budget-fair-pay-home-care/
The fight is being led by women of color, and they're kicking ass â and they're doing it through their unions. Worker power is the foundation that we build a better world upon, and it's surging.

One crisp winter morning in Sweden, a cute little girl named Greta woke up to a perfect world, one where there were no petroleum products ruining the earth. She tossed aside her cotton sheet and wool blanket and stepped out onto a dirt floor covered with willow bark that had been pulverized with rocks. âWhatâs this?â she asked.
âPulverized willow bark,â replied her fairy godmother.
âWhat happened to the carpet?â she asked.
âThe carpet was nylon, which is made from butadiene and hydrogen cyanide, both made from petroleum,â came the response.
Greta smiled, acknowledging that adjustments are necessary to save the planet, and moved to the sink to brush her teeth where instead of a toothbrush, she found a willow, mangled on one end to expose wood fibre bristles.
âYour old toothbrush?â noted her godmother, âAlso nylon.â
âWhereâs the water?â asked Greta.
âDown the road in the canal,â replied her godmother, âJust make sure you avoid water with cholera in itâ
âWhyâs there no running water?â Greta asked, becoming a little peevish.
âWell,â said her godmother, who happened to teach engineering at MIT, âWhere do we begin?â There followed a long monologue about how sink valves need elastomer seats and how copper pipes contain copper, which has to be mined and how itâs impossible to make all-electric earth-moving equipment with no gear lubrication or tires and how ore has to be smelted to a make metal, and thatâs tough to do with only electricity as a source of heat, and even if you use only electricity, the wires need insulation, which is petroleum-based, and though most of Swedenâs energy is produced in an environmentally friendly way because of hydro and nuclear, if you do a mass and energy balance around the whole system, you still need lots of petroleum products like lubricants and nylon and rubber for tires and asphalt for filling potholes and wax and iPhone plastic and elastic to hold your underwear up while operating a copper smelting furnace and . . .
âWhatâs for breakfast?â interjected Greta, whose head was hurting.
"Fresh, range-fed chicken eggs,â replied her godmother. âRaw.â
âHow so, raw?â inquired Greta.
âWell, . . .â And once again, Greta was told about the need for petroleum products like transformer oil and scores of petroleum products essential for producing metals for frying pans and in the end was educated about how you canât have a petroleum-free world and then cook eggs. Unless you rip your front fence up and start a fire and carefully cook your egg in an orange peel like you do in Boy Scouts. Not that you can find oranges in Sweden anymore.
âBut I want poached eggs like my Aunt Tilda makes,â lamented Greta.
âTilda died this morning,â the godmother explained. âBacterial pneumonia.â
âWhat?!â interjected Greta. âNo one dies of bacterial pneumonia! We have penicillin.â
âNot anymore,â explained godmother âThe production of penicillin requires chemical extraction using isobutyl acetate, which, if you know your organic chemistry, is petroleum-based. Lots of people are dying, which is problematic because thereâs not any easy way of disposing of the bodies since backhoes need hydraulic oil and crematoriums canât really burn many bodies using as fuel Swedish fences and furniture, which are rapidly disappearing - being used on the black market for roasting eggs and staying warm.â
This represents only a fraction of Gretaâs day, a day without microphones to exclaim into and a day without much food, and a day without carbon-fibre boats to sail in, but a day that will save the planet.
Tune in tomorrow when Greta needs a root canal and learns how Novocain is synthesized.

Morning and evening
Maids heard the goblins cry:
âCome buy our orchard fruits,
Come buy, come buy:
Apples and quinces,
Lemons and oranges,
Plump unpeckâd cherries,
Melons and raspberries,
Bloom-down-cheekâd peaches,
Swart-headed mulberries,
Wild free-born cranberries,
Crab-apples, dewberries,
Pine-apples, blackberries,
Apricots, strawberries;â
All ripe together
In summer weather,â
Morns that pass by,
Fair eves that fly;
Come buy, come buy:
Our grapes fresh from the vine,
Pomegranates full and fine,
Dates and sharp bullaces,
Rare pears and greengages,
Damsons and bilberries,
Taste them and try:
Currants and gooseberries,
Bright-fire-like barberries,
Figs to fill your mouth,
Citrons from the South,
Sweet to tongue and sound to eye;
Come buy, come buy.â

again piarles - "i brought you flowers." "for what?" "there has to be a reason?" đšđđˇ
(i'm a sucker for these dorks giving each other flowers)
Markets covered by bright orange and green umbrellas lined the wide cobbled streets of Milan, selling just about anything you could dream of. Charles passed through them slowly, his baseball cap and sunglasses on to try to avoid being recognised as he perused stalls of vibrant and aromatic spices, from vivid orange turmeric to the reddest chilli powder, book stalls selling beautiful old hardbacks with gold lettering, or art stands ranging from huge, detailed canvases of the Italian countryside preserved in oil paint, to a kindly old man sitting and sketching caricatures. At the end of the street he came across a flower stall, sweet smelling and overflowing with blooms of every shape and colour he could imagine. Charles paused and sniffed a bouquet, smiling faintly. Pierre was always buying him flowers, whether it was for a birthday, anniversary, or to celebrate a race win, but Charles felt ashamed to think back and realise he wasnât sure heâd ever bought some for Pierre.
âI can customise them, depending on what youâre trying to say,â the lady sitting in the stall addressed him in Italian, her eyes wrinkling at the corners with the warmth of her expression. âWho are they for?â
âSomeone I love,â Charles said honestly, touching one of the petals of a lily nearby with the tip of one finger. âI just thought heâd like them.â
The lady smiled as if she understood more than he said, and got to her feet. âThe white lily symbolises pure love,â she told him, carefully lifting a few from the bunch in which they stood. âFitting, no?â
She built him a bouquet of white lilies, apple blossom, daisies, honeysuckle, and red chrysanthemum, telling a story of love, devotion, and preference above all else. Charles marvelled at her hands as she composed them into a beautiful bunch, tying them together with a pink ribbon. The smell coming off them was incredible, and he thanked her profusely, leaving an extra tip before taking the bouquet and continuing back towards home.
Pierre had been in a meeting with Alpine, so Charles had gone for a wander around the city in the meantime, enjoying the markets and sunshine and getting an ice cream, but now he couldnât wait to get back to Pierre and give him these flowers.
He let himself in, ditching cap, keys and sunglasses in a bowl by the door. His face instantly bloomed into a smile when he saw Pierre was already back. âCalamar, I brought you flowers.â He suddenly felt half shy, stretching the beautiful and lavish bouquet out to his best friend, his lover.
âFor what?â Pierre laughed, surprised but happy, taking them from Charles and smelling them in the same way Charles had done in the stall. âTheyâre beautiful.â
âThere has to be a reason?â Charles didnât know why he was blushing, but he was, and he tucked himself into Pierreâs side to hide it. âYou always bring me flowers, and I just saw these and thought you would like them.â
âI love them.â Pierre wound his arm around Charlesâ waist, drawing him close and resting his chin on top of his head as he admired the bouquet. He was touched more than he knew how to say. Charles was always sweet, and never went short on showing Pierre how much he loved him, but he was also the first boy Pierre had been with, and with that came the territory of re-negotiating in himself what role he played in a relationship. He was used to buying flowers, but not to getting them, and it stirred a fierce love inside him for this beautiful boy â his first and last real love. âAnd I love you.â
Charles extracted himself from Pierre just enough to be able to see his face, the smile on his lips and the surprise threat of tears in those bright blue eyes. That expression â that was why heâd bought Pierre flowers. He leaned in and kissed him, taking care not to squish the flowers between them. âJe tâaime, calamar.â
#they deserve all the flowers!!#im getting way too into these prompts#gotta look up all the flower meanings!#thank you again lovely#duquesademiel#piarles#quiet acts of love prompts

jessss hi đ 38 or 44 + din for the micro fics?
Mik!!! Hi friend!!
Din & Grogu + 38. Soak from this list
Groguâs squealing laughter pierced through the quietude of the Djarin home. Dusk was creeping in, turning deep orange skies to a muted navy. The moon was taking its place above the clouds, shining a warm, pale yellow onto the ashen ground below.
Din laughed loudly as he knelt beside the tub, head back and cheeks red.
âAâdika, please,â he pleaded, âYouâre going to flood the whole house.â
Grogu was flapping his arms in a tub full of purple bubbles, screaming and splashing Din with every chop of his small, green hands.
Greef had gifted the boy some exotic soap made with jogan fruit extract. The sweet scent filled the tile room, hanging in the warm, steamy air.
âMore!â the child giggled, âMore, more more!â
âNo! No more,â Din choked through laughter. His pants and shirt were thoroughly soaked with the purple tinged water. He reasoned he would smell like a fruit bowl for days, even beneath the sweat and beskar.
In the tub, a kittle frog toy was swimming rows, kicking its little feet like pedals. When it finished, Grogu would carefully hold it in place, and turn the key to wind it up again.
He laughed loudly every time it kicked off and left a little trail through the bubbles.
Din smiled warmly at the boy, arms resting on his haunches as he crouched beside him.
It had been months since they moved into the little cabin, and he found himself still basking in the domesticity. They picked out vegetables together at the market and watched silly videos on the holo after dinner and passed out together on Dinâs bed.
If it was a dream, he hoped to never wake up.

How I think the Fearsome Five Would Use Vanilla Extract
Megavolt: Drizzles it on top of food. Like pancakes, waffles, desserts, toast, orange juice.
Quackerjack: Drinks it as it is. Takes shots of vanilla extract. Brushes his teeth with vanilla extract. Puts it behind his ears.
Bushroot: Has actually vanilla plants. He doesn't consume it. He just uses to extract for candles or scent oils. He owns a small black market of vanilla extract.
Liquidator: Uses it to smell nice. Gets it in people's eyes as a defense. Sells it for ridiculously high prices. Helps Bushroot run the black market.
Negaduck: Uses it as fuel. It is very flammable so he uses it for arson. There's a chain of fires that smell like vanilla. DW and the police are baffled. Poisons vanilla extract as a weapon. Won't drink it but he'll sniff it

Â
You should have known that this little trip back down to Haddonfield was going too smoothly. Sure, you had only been here for about two days, but still. Disaster is part of the little towns being, stained into its fibers like the residue at a crime scene. It doesn't usually take long for trouble to announce itself.Â
Your mother and father's nagging has been down to a surprising low, probably sucking up to you because you're finally back, even if the circumstances are less than ideal, and the few familiar faces that have recognized you when you were down at the market and gas station were kind enough, welcoming you back after all the years.Â
So, you honestly can't say you're surprised to see the white strips of smoke snaking out from underneath the orange hood of your car.Â
You curse over the sound of Billy Squier belting out the chorus of My Kinda Lover, while checking your rear-view mirror to make sure the road was clear before pulling over on the shoulder.
This is the sort of karma to expect when you drive a busted 70's Pinto.Â
But at least your car broke down on a county road and not the highway or interstate.Â
You try to remember the steps to take for an overheated vehicle while you set it in park and turn the volume dial down on the radio. You can't recall exactly what your father had told you when you were only a child, zoning in and out of focus on the front drive while he monologued from underneath his truck.Â
Pullover . . . Shut off the car . . . pop the hood . . . let it cool . . . Wasn't there something else? God, if only you had payed attention when you were twelve, but the lawn was just so much more appealing than your dad's life lessons.Â
You turn the key over in the ignition and extract it, listening to the engine die before getting out and coming round to the front. You have to squint your eyes against the vapors when you fumble for the latch through the grille. As soon as you lift the hood your rushed by a plum of pale smoke. It makes it a pain to find the support rod for a bit, but you get it eventually, successfully propping the hood. Leaving you to stare stupidly at the engine of your car, hissing like a pissed off cat.Â
Now . . . What?Â
Calling for help would be your best bet. Your mother is a no, as she's undoubtedly working her shift at the bank. Your dad is probably passed out in the living room, snoring on his La-Z-Boy, enjoying the weekend off for once. You really didn't want to give either of them anymore ammunition against you, but the only other option is waiting until your car cooled off enough and hoping it will start when you try.Â
While you're deep in your internal debate you fail to notice the thrum of an engine approaching and then relaxing into an idle before cutting off completely.
It's the sound of your name that breaks you from your daze, and you nearly break your neck to turn and face the owner of the voice. They look just as perplexed as you do, staring at you like you're a ghost.Â
God, this person looks familiar. You take in his dark doe like eyes, and the mop of curls on his head while he stands a bit awkwardly on the other side of the road next to a gold and black motorcycle. And then it clicks.Â
"Corey?"Â
"They're talking about me already I see," you joke, a small playful smile curling across your face, easily falling into the swing of conversation. Even after all these years.
A gentle smile raises at the corners of his mouth, and he seems to relax a bit, looking a bit more like the boy you'd see walking the hallways at high school and less like a stranger. Damn, you forgot how cute he looks when he's happy.Â
"I was scared you wouldn't remember me, " he says as he covers the road between the both of you to stand close to the side of your car. " I thought I was going crazy for a minute. Never thought I'd see you back in Haddonfield, again. I mean . . . I heard you were back, but I didn't believe it."
"You know how it is, " he shrugs his shoulder lightly, " can't take a shit without somebody hearing about it"Â
"Some things never change, I guess."
"Were you expecting them to?"
"No, " you scoff under a breath of laughter, " I'd never set my expectations for this place that high."Â
That gets a chuckle out of him, and you take the lull in conversation to look to the Kawasaki parked across the road.Â
" So, how've you been lately? Looks like you got a new ride." You blurt the question out before you can check yourself. You know how he's been. You've heard the rumors and allegations about him just this afternoon while you were at the market, stocking up on some much-needed junk food and a bottle of wine when you had been practically bum-rushed by your old history teacher, Mrs. Brewer. Upon recognizing you she was quick to crowd into your space with a flurry of questions: " How are you?" " How has life been treating you?" "Got a lucky fella waiting for you back home?" But once all of the formalities were out of the way she was quick to jump into the local gossip that you missed over the years.
Mostly boring disputes between neighbors and little details about ex classmates moving on and starting families. You blanked most of it out, nodding and humming absentmindedly until an old name caught your attention.
" Have you heard about Corey Cunningham? I don't know if you shared any classes with him back in the da - oh, no matter! Well, just a few years after you left, on Halloween - of course it was! - he had been babysitting the Allen's kid. Well . . . " She scoffs in an almost amused manner before leaning in and whispering like she was telling you a big secret. " He had killed him just as the parents had come home. Kicked the poor child over the railing. Tried to say it was an accident. Got away with it too, scot-free. "
Despite Mrs. Brewers intel, you are already well aware of the incident. Your mother had made sure to call you the night right after that Halloween to indulge you every single horrid detail regarding the crime. You had felt confused and possibly even a bit betrayed.
How could Corey commit such a senseless act of violence?
You couldn't have helped the relief that flooded your body when she had called you several months later to share that he had been cleared of all charges.
Corey seems to tense at the question, not that you can blame him. Instead of immediately answering he glances over his shoulder to look at his bike, probably thinking about hopping on it and speeding off. " It's a work in progress, but it gets me from point A to point B so I can't really complain. As for how I've been . . . " There's a pause like he's looking for the right way to phrase it. " I've been surviving. "
After running into your old teacher, you were quick to ask you father about the incident when you had swung by your parents. He had offered you a little more insight, though his opinion of Corey was pretty similar to Mrs. Brewer's and your mothers. That despite being proven innocent, Corey had been quick to be pegged as a social pariah. "I always knew there was something wrong with that kid. Even before that night, " your dad had said before taking a bite of his homemade ham and cheese sandwich.
So, it was just Haddonfield being Haddonfield then. Quick to cast the stone and pass judgement, as per usual.
Sure, you and Corey had never extremely close growing up. Apart from sharing a few classes and the occasional chance encounter your relationship was little more than that. But even then, there was no way that sweet, awkward Corey would willing take a child's life.
You offer him a lifeline, " there's not much else you can do in Haddonfield. "Â
That gets a small chuckle out of him, and he seems a bit more at ease again. " You're right about that. But enough about me, how have you been doing? I thought that you couldn't wait to get out of here. What brought you back?"Â
"Oh uh, my grandfather passed recently, so I'm here to help go through his things and get everything organized, " you say, swallowing a lump. You've done your best to ignore the dull ache in your chest, but it seems to be getting worse each passing day. And the sad look that Corey gives you doesn't help. He seems like he regrets opening his mouth and for some reason that makes you feel even worse.
"I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to-"
" It still hasn't really clicked that he's gone, you know? So, it's fine. I was actually heading to his house to start working on clearing some things out when this decided to take a shit on me, " you say, lightly kicking the front bumper with your shoe.Â
"No, it's fine. Don't feel bad about it, " you say, shaking your head. You meant it too. Despite having to deal with countless people questioning you about your grandfathers passing, having heard the news from your mother no doubt, you don't mind talking about it with Corey.Â
He didn't ask you with the intention of opening up wounds and prodding his nose into your family affairs, not the old gossips in town.Â
"Mind if I take a look?" He asks.
"Please do. " You back away giving him room to work with and watching him as he leans over to inspect the contents of the engine. The smoke is next to nothing now, spars puffs that evaporate as quickly as they form. You can't help but study him as works, wondering how someone so familiar can look so different. Maybe it's the leather jacket, or the little band of silver that wraps around his pinky finger, or the absence of his glasses that used to rest on the bridge of his nose (contacts, maybe?), but something seems different about him.Â
Well, of course, it's been nearly three years since you've seen him, you remind yourself, people change.Â
You lean down next to him, pretending to help look for the problem even though the assortment of wires and metal make about as much sense to you as a jumbled pile of puzzle pieces.Â
The close proximity lets you catch the scent of his cologne, mostly sandalwood with creamy and smoky undertones, a little bit of leather. Probably his jacket.Â
He's got this studious look on his face, eyebrows pinched and slightly furrowed. A loose curl dangles above his eyes and it's a little distracting, a part of you is tempted to move it out of the way for him, to push it into unruly bundle of his hair that looks like it has flecks of amber in it because of the evening sunlight.
"So, what were you doing all the way out here, anyway?"
Jesus, since when have you ever had thoughts like these about Corey Cunningham? He used to be the one who would look at you. You would catch his fleeting glances while on your way to class, always pretending not to see the dreamy stares or the faint blush to his cheeks.Â
You weren't stupid. You knew what that look meant.
But you had been in a relationship. And despite the fact that a cute kind guy with warm brown eyes had a crush on you, you stayed away. Because you had a boyfriend who treated you like dog shit and didn't deserve your time. But you were young and stupid and had thought that you were in love.Â
His head perks up just a bit at your question and he pauses for a minute before answering. " I just like to ride sometimes. Just get away for a bit, even if it's only for a few minutes. "Â
"It looks like it may be a bad radiator hose. They just get old and worn out and snap, " he concludes suddenly, rising to his full height.Â
There's something melancholic about it. Even after all these years, his circumstances are still the same, if not worse. It reminds you of one distant chilly November evening. You were down at the local park, gently swaying on a swing when you had noticed a figure briskly walking across the lawn. It didn't take you long to recognize it as Corey. He seemed agitated, tense, like he was too big for his body and was seconds away from bursting out of it. His mother you assumed was most likely the culprit. It was no secret that she was (is) overbearing and controlling. Helicopter parent would be an understatement. When you thought of it, you had never actually seen Corey at any parties or out with friend's past 7:00 pm.Â
From what you could gather his life was a constant routine of school and occasionally helping out the Allen's family with mowing their yard and pulling stubborn weeds.
You probably should have stayed put and let him walk away. Out of sight out of mind.Â
But your body had a mind of its own, launching off of the swing and in his direction. It had only taken you seconds to reach him, and he looked startled and a bit confused when you had asked if you could join him. But he agreed, nonetheless.Â
You had offered him a few puffs of the joint stuffed in your pocket, but he had declined. He didn't want her to smell it, he confessed, and it had been enough to keep you from pulling it out and lighting it up with your Bic lighter.Â
You had talked about everything and nothing, until the sun had dipped down low, and it was just a strip of lavender bordering the horizon. Upon noticing the time, you had said your goodbyes and he ran off in the direction of his house to be home in time for dinner.Â
That had been the first time you had heard his laugh. You liked it a lot.Â
"How much does that usually cost? " You can already feel the worry creeping in at the thought of your already desperate bank account. You really couldn't afford a large blow to it, right now.
"Eh, it depends really. If you do it yourself or hire someone, " he explains, eyeing the engine and combing a hand through his hair. " The part itself is usually anywhere from fifteen to thirty bucks. It depends on the quality and if you get a mechanic to do it for you."Â
Damn, this is definitely what you needed right now. When it rains it pours and the umbrella you have for cover is about as stable your mental health on a busy workday.Â
" I could do it, " Corey offers you.Â
"How much would you charge me?"Â
"No, Corey, I'm serious-"
He shakes his head slightly, shoving his hands in his pockets, " I wouldn't."
You can't help but stare at him like he grew two heads, like he's telling a weird joke and you're waiting for the punchline. Meanwhile he looks as serious as can be.
Almost hopeful if you didn't know any better.Â
"So am I, " he states firmly.
The look you give him is incredulous. You're ready to argue and he can tell by the way your jaw open to speak, so he beats you to the punch.Â
"I don't want your money," he says. There's a finality to it. He levels you with his eyes almost like he's challenging you to try and argue with him. But you don't want to try and go round and round in circles until one of you relents to the other. You're more confused than anything. And you want answers.Â
"Why do you always do that? " You step closer to him like you'd find the answer that way. He's not following judging from is lack of response, so you elaborate, "you're always go out of your way to help me. Like the night back at the gas station. Why?"
A smile pokes at his lips but despite his apparent amusement he answers like it's the most obvious thing in the world. Just a fact.Â
"Because you're a good person."Â
" So, you won't let me pay you?"Â
The response does little to satisfy you and you can't help the huff the gets pushed from your lungs. 'Good person' my ass. But maybe he was telling the truth, maybe it just wasn't the answer you wanted. You wanted that night to mean something more than it did. So that you didn't feel stupid about those old forgotten feelings heating up in your chest. Maybe he was just a nice person.Â
Maybe that night when your douche of a boyfriend had kicked you out of his lifted Chevy and out onto the curb of some gas station, Corey had just offered to escort you the three miles back home out of the kindness of his heart. Because he felt bad for you.Â
You had felt so embarrassed and useless when you had jumped out of the truck and stormed into the 'Gulf.'Â You were at the slurpy machine, filling up a medium sized cup when Corey had approached you. As hesitant as he was, he seemed worried. Brows furrowed and raised with concern.Â
He had asked if you were okay, and you had told him you were. It was short, clipped and tired. You had felt guilt gnaw at your stomach as soon as you had responded, but your pride wouldn't let you apologize.Â
You expected him to back away, to be put off by your anger. But he didn't. He stayed.Â
The two of you would sit outside, drinking a cherry slurpy and a Yoo-Hoo, and he'd sit and listen when the dame broke, and you vented until your throat felt raw. Then he'd offer to walk you home, knowing that you wouldn't call your parents. Wouldn't give them the satisfaction of saying, "I told you so." Despite the fact that his own mother would have his head for having vanished for about two hours without so much as a word.Â
He'd guard you both as you strolled down the lonely streets lined with dim lamps, while the rest of Haddonfield was piled in the bleachers cheering on the Huskers while they played against their long-term rivals, the Montgomery Wolverines.Â
All the way up to the doorstep of your house where you'd whisper a thank you and goodnight, punctuated by a light kiss on his cheek before fleeing into the confines of your home before you could see the way his face flushed in response.Â
Was that just because he was a good person?Â
" You can, but I'll just find a way to slip it back to you, " he says honestly. That smile is back. Cocky and self-assured. It's one you've never seen on him before, and you can't tell if it excites you or pisses you off. "We can go back to the garage, and I'll get the tow truck. Come back and get your car. With all the junk that passes through I'm sure we've probably got what you need laying around somewhere. We'll have back up and running and on your way to your grandfathers in no time."Â
What the hell, maybe you can convince him to let you pay him once you get a decent meal in him.Â
The two of you have a stare off for a few good seconds while you mull the offer over. As tempting as it is to let someone else take care of your problems, your morals are having trouble bending over. A compromise maybe?Â
"Fine, "you relent. " But I'm buying dinner."
"Sounds like a deal," he agrees. "You can come with me if you want. It'll be dark soon and I don't like the idea of being out here all alone."
"Hey! " You call over to him, his head snapping up in your direction. " You want something to drink before I lock up? I got a cooler full of water and some sodas if you want. No chocolate milk unfortunately. "Â
There's a protective edge to his voice and you can't help but think about how much you like it. You nod, giving a quick 'okay' in agreement before moving around to lock the doors and roll up the windows of your car. The last thing you need is for some jackass to steal your vehicle while you're gone. Despite how shitty it may be.Â
Corey crosses the road to his Kawasaki and stands over it, giving it a strong downward push to one of the pedals. Effectively kickstarting the machine in a way that shouldn't be as attractive as it is.Â
"What I need right now is you on my bike," he says seriously. You're thankful for the wanning sunlight, or else he probably would be able to see how flustered you are. The embarrassment would kill you. "Alright, alright! I'm coming!" You call, slamming the driver side door closed, stepping away from the car and approaching Corey and the idling motorcycle.Â
You place a hand on Corey's shoulder to stabilize yourself as you swing a leg over to straddle the ride.
"Hold on tight, " he warns.
It prompts you to wrap your arms around his waist and he briefly puts a hand on your forearm and squeezes before gassing up the throttle and lurching forward with a hearty growl from the engine.Â
You can't help the airy giggle that bubbles up in your throat, and you're pretty sure that shaking from Corey's body is due to his own laughter, but you can't hear the sound over the sound of the motorcycle roaring down the county road.Â
In this moment, however brief it maybe, you forget everything. Your grandfathers passing, your mother and father, your responsibilities, Haddonfield.
It all goes away with the rush of adrenaline that jumps through your veins and the wind in your hair.Â
It's just you, Corey and the road. And you think you haven't felt so alive in forever.
Maybe being back isn't going to be a complete bust after all.Â

Do you think any amateur could handle a drink like this?
Amour-propre Effervesce | Fizz, Floral, Fandom
Suletta wouldnât drink, but Guel Jeturk would despite, imo, probably not enjoying the taste of alcohol. However, thereâs a classic cocktail that's PERFECT for that -- the Ramos Gin Fizz, which I retemplated to include both an interesting purple sweetener and several layers of floral flavors including rose, with a glorious fluffy crown worthy of the Dilanzaâs feather. The floral layers and variety of aromatics feels distinctly appropriate in G Witch, especially for a character like Guel.Â
However, the Ramos Gin Fizz isnât for the Miorines of the cocktail world; it requires some careful prep, and takes a lot of upper arm strength and time shaking. So much like Guel had some... mechanical assistance imposed on him, weâre going to use a great hack established by famous cocktail bar Death & Co. We are going to use a whipped cream dispenser and force-nitro the cocktail to emulsify and foam up, without the hellish amount of shaking. However, itâs important to follow these instructions carefully.
Note: Alternate creams/vegan foaming agents may not provide the desired effect, due to the importance of the proteins in both the cream and the egg white. If you want to make this a mocktail, you can use your favorite tea in place of gin and omit the creme de violette.Â
SPECIAL EQUIPMENT: A Whipped-Cream Dispenser and Nitrous Oxide cartridges(8grm). These donât need to be industrial grade, iSi whippers -- As long as its not the style marketed as the âEasywhipâ with the spout right on top, look below for an example of the shape it should be. These can be bought online, or at culinary supply stores, or your local tobacco/vape shop or adult novelty store. Please DO NOT POINT TOWARDS SELF OR OTHERS WHILE SCREWING IN THE GAS CANISTER, AND ALIGN THE THREADING ON THE CANISTER HOLDER CAREFULLY TO MINIMIZE RISK OF VENTING COLD GAS FROM AN IMPROPER PUNCTURE.Â
Step 1: Place serving glass in freezer.Â
Step 2. Place the following ingredients in your whipped cream dispenser.Â
2 fl oz or 60ml GinÂ
0.5 fl oz or 15 ml Lemon Juice
0.5 fl oz or 15 ml Lime Juice
1 Dropper Bittermens Orange Cream Citrate*
.75ml Old Forester Hummingbird Rose & Citrus Bitters [or 2 dashes preferred floral bitters]
0.33 fl oz or 10ml Creme de Violette
1 fl oz or 30ml Blueberry Puree Syrup (I used ReĂĄl)Â
1 Egg White or 20ml liquid pasteurized egg white
0.75 fl oz or 22.5 ml Heavy Cream
1 drop Orange Blossom Water
1 drop Rosewater
*You can substitute 1 dash orange bitters[Angostura Orange preferable] and 3 drops vanilla extract if necessary or just omit
Have glass ready to receive.Â
Add a couple ice cubes and screw on cap tightly. Take 1 8 gram nitrous oxide charger. Common brands include Whip-Its, Bestwhip, and Leland. Insert charger into holder and screw in until you hear it vent into the dispenser. Give it a few gentle shakes.Â
Add about half an ounce of chilled seltzer or soda water to the bottom of frozen glass. Turn whip cream dispenser so spout is directly facing down and gently -- GENTLY -- press the lever to release. It should take about a minute or so to mostly fill the glass.
After filling or mostly filling the glass, let sit for 2-4 minutes, ideally in freezer. Then make small divot in foam and slowly pour in about .5-1 ounces or so of soda water. The foam should rise and not collapse if properly made and a straw inserted should stand up straight.Â
Lastly, if you desire, as a little nod to Guelâs iconic look, use an atomizer or spray bottle to spritz Peychaudâs bitters on top of the foam. Serve with a spoon to enjoy all the foam.Â
Credit is due to Death & Co for originating the nitro-Gin-Fizz, David Wondrichâs Imbibe for all I could ever want or need to know about Fizzes, and this Cocktail Contessa Mocktail for the blueberry syrup inspiration.Â

Additionally, orange extract is used in the cosmetics business in addition to the food industry.

hooray!! congrats on the good news, i hope the streak continues!
okay i'm glad you won't be uncomfortable with the stuff i interact with. i didn't bother with any warnings on my blog bc i'm mostly here to consume things and don't expect too many people to wander by lol. but! since i have been coming out of my lil lurker basement lately i finally at least added a color scheme to it so i look less like a bot.
oh man oh man where to start on tea and jackets? what are your go-to's for either? i'm kind of a tea purist-i prefer tea the east asian (chinese/japanese/korean) way, just pure tea leaves and occasional aromatics with no additional sugar or cream unless i'm specifically making a milk tea. i don't really like herbal teas. i want that camellia sinensis in my shit. my default tea rn is probably hojicha. i made a sunrise burnt basque hojicha cheesecake and though the layers didn't come out as cleanly as i wanted it tasted lovely. a tumblr friend on here inspired me to try out the burnt basque with a FANTASTIC green thai tea i have next! (if you're in the market for the green thai tea and are usa-based i cannot recommend it enough. it's so unique bc green thai is uncommon in the states already, and most of it comes from the powder packets but the one i have is all whole ingredients, no extracts or dye or flavor enhancements and it is DIVINE. sooo fragrant with pandan and vanilla and mint. i will scarf down anything with pandan in it but this is especially lovely)
i basically only own leather jackets or blazers, i have an embarassing amount of both. i did just do a closet purge with a friend's help though and i am proud of say i got rid of like, 16 college-era (p)leather jackets and blazers that had seen better days/are no longer in style
ty for sticking around for my D1 yapping!
dw abt it LMAO. it's not super apparent, but if you look close enough you can see my inner hoe poking through in my tags, so yes. i definitely consume smut and dark content and am looking forward to seeing your stuff on my dash đ¤
omg and for tea? i literally drink any and all kinds of tea. so again, if you've been on my blog long enough/look closely i'm pretty sure i've mentioned it before but i'm half korean, and i while i love all kinds of tea, the tea my mom made for me are nostalgic and bring me comfort. i almost always drink my teas plain (chai being the only exception) or with a little bit of honey.
i LOVE herbal teas. i can't really drink a ton of caffeine with my adhd meds or i genuinely start tweaking. like twitching and all that shit, so i normally drink other teas even though i really enjoy green and black teas :')
THAT TEA AND CHEESECAKE BOTH SOUND SO GOOD OMG
i'm a sucker for jackets and boots, and while i don't have too many, i definitely own a few, but i'll probably reblog this post and rant about them later lmao
if you're interested, here is a comprehensive list of my top ten favorite teas (in no particular order), how i drink them, and why. thank you for attending my lecture.
1. you are so right about hojicha. i love green tea, but my absolute favorite variation of green tea is nokcha. i love the extra flavor the brown rice brings to it. i normally drink it plain, but if i'm feeling fancy i'll steam a little milk and add a drizzle of honey
2. this definitely isn't korean, but when i was little my mom would make me this tea and it was so, so, so, good. it's basically just a stick of cinnamon, some apples slices up, orange and lemon peel, and a little bit of honey boiled together for like an hour. it's literally my favorite thing to drink in the fall bc it just warms me up from the inside
3. oksusu-cha. it's basically a korean tea made from roasted corn kernels and i really, really, like it. it's different from a lot of teas in the sense that it's almost savory, but its taste is very unique and almost earthy? idk how to describe it but i highly recommend trying it. i always drink it plain, but pouring it over heukmi bap (korean purple rice) and eating is also amazing
4. earl gray. i know this one is very british and different from the rest of the teas i drink, but i love having a cup of it once in a while! i drink it black sometimes, but i'll also drink it with either lemon and honey, or a little milk and honey
5. chamomile my love. i love love love a nice cup of chamomile before bed while i'm reading a book! i almost always drink it plain, but if i'm on my period i add a spoonful of honey
6. hibiscus tea. while this isn't necessarily my favorite taste wise, it brings back a lot of memories from when i was little and would go to a cafe with my mom. not to say i don't enjoy the flavor, it's just a little too sweet and a little too tart for me to drink a lot of
7. gyulpi cha. it's a korean citrus peel tea (not unlike #2) and it's really, really, good. i always drink it plain.
8. chai. this is the only type of tea i drink with a ton of stuff in it. i'm currently boycotting starbucks, but i love their iced chai latte with sweet cream foam. during fall i normally get it with some pumpkin flavoring lol. however i barely consider the drink tea at this point lmao
9. lavender tea. i absolutely love a cup of lavender tea before bed. i always drink it plain, and think the scent is so calming!
10. and finally lilac tea. i love lilacs. growing up we had a massive lilac bush and the smell always brings me back. i really enjoy its subtly sweet and floral flavor, and always drink it plain.
anyways, that's it for the tea lmao.
#i think i out yapped you sorry#i did NOT intend for this to get this long đđ#lee's brain answers#lee's brain moots!#from: cheesypuffkins87#tea#tea review

A tropical thumbprint is a recipe I came up with. I called it a Hawaiian thumbprint for my marketing chunk of the project, but it's like a traditional jam thumbprint cookie but it has tropical flavors and is encrusted with coconut and freeze dried pineapple!
anyways, recipes;
Almond Spice Version 3 2 cups flour 1 tsp baking soda 3 tsp cornstarch 4 tsp almond extract 1 tsp salt 2 Tbsp cinnamon 2 Tbsp nutmeg â
cups chopped almonds 1 cup butter ž cups brown sugar ½ cups granulated sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 egg Preheat oven to 350°F Cream butter, sugar, and extracts. Add egg and stir to combine. Sift dry ingredients into the bowl mix to combine. fold in â
cups chopped almonds, Roll dough into log press â
cup of almonds into sides of dough log and wrap in parchment paper. Slice into 32 slices. Bake for 8-11 min
Hawaiian Thumbprint Cookies Version 3
3 and ½ cups flour
ž cups butter
1 tsp vanilla extract
11 teaspoons pineapple jam
16 macadamia nut kernels, cut in half
2 Cups freezed dried pineapple, powdered
1 egg
4 oz unsweetened coconut flakes
Âź tsp salt
ž cups sugar
½ cup monk fruit sweetener, divided
Preheat oven to 350°F Cream together one egg, vanilla extract, butter, sugar, and 6 tablespoons of the monk fruit sweetener. Sift in dry ingredients. Combine. Fold in one and a half cups freeze dried pineapple powder. Place onto parchment paper and roll into a tube and wrap in parchment paper. Chill in the fridge for half an hour. While the dough rests, beat the egg in a small bowl. Mix together coconut flakes, chopped macadamia nuts, monk fruit sweetener and remaining pineapple powder in a small bowl. Place some of the coconut mixture into a small plate.Cut dough into 32 equal disks.Dip each disk into egg mixture, then dip into coconut mixture and place on a parchment paper lined baking sheet. Repeat until all discs have been dipped, refilling coconut mixture when depleted.Press your thumb or the back of a rounded teaspoon into the disks. Fill holes with 1/3 tsp of pineapple jam, then press a macadamia nut half on top of the jam, flat side down. Repeating for all cookies. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes
Orange You Glad Cookies Version 3 2 and ½ cups flour½ tsp saltThe juice of 1 and ½ navel oranges3 Tbsp of orange juiceThe zest of 1 and ½ navel orangesThe zest of ½ navel oranges3 Tbsp orange extract1 cup butter3 Tbsp powdered monk fruit sweetener1 and Ÿ cups sugar ½ tsp baking powderOne eggPreheat oven to 350°f Beat one egg, extracts, butter sugar, and flour, add juice of 1 and ½ oranges and zest of 1 and ½ oranges. How can you tell what the notes of a perfume are? Is that a skill that you have trained? Just wondering bc I can never smell more than one thing at a time!
It is a skill that gets easier the more stuff you smell! I wouldnât say I have a great nose, but I can definitely pick up on more facets and textures now than when I first started.
Tbh I just smelled a lot of stuff, looked at the listed notes and reviews, and then looked for similarities until I got better at picking them out. I also started being able to better tell differences between takes on a similar scent like âvanilla.â
Of course, a good deal of this is just marketing. Even smells like âvanillaâ and âroseâ with a natural referent are made up of many individual aromachemicals. And you can take the natural plant and turn it into a distilled essence, but not all those aromachemicals are going to make it. And many notes, such as leather, are not extracted from the natural material. Furthermore, naturals like that are expensive. Itâs common for perfumers to use synthesized aromachemicals that are combined to suggest scents. For example, ethyl maltol is a common aromachemical that smells of cotton candy, caramel, berries, jam, etc. The specific note that it evokes is determined by what other aromachemicals itâs paired with and also the marketing copy.
Edit: Some people cannot smell certain aromachemicals! Itâs very common to be noseblind to at least one musk.
Perfumes can also vary in how realistically they aim to portray a scent. Some are very realistic, like youâre right there smelling a specific plant or object. Some others are more abstract. Most mainstream perfumes are on the abstract side and might give, say, the impression of florals and baked goods instead of Literally A Vine of Honeysuckle and A Fresh Baked Chocolate Cake.
If you want to start being able to pick out multiple notes in perfume, you might want to sample some that have notes with easy to reference natural materials. You could peel and smell an orange, sniff vanilla extract, and then smell an orange vanilla perfume. You should look for scents that are described as hyperrealistic or atmospheric if you do this.
Thanks for asking! If youâre really interested in perfume, there are certainly better guides out there, but I enjoyed rambling.

âClan capitalism
Ukraine became independent in 1991 following a referendum in which more than 90% of voters voted in favor.[3] Until 2014, Russia accepted this result and recognized Ukraineâs existence in a sort of regime of âlimited sovereigntyâ. Ukraine was tied to its larger neighbor by economic relations[4] and Russia was able to use its local clients to influence internal political development. The latter has long been turbulent.
The period of economic transition in which Ukraine followed, to some extent, the prescriptions of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, quickly created a new capitalist class. At first, it was composed mainly of âred directorsâ (i.e., the managerial cadres of the Stalinist regime), and later also of broader layers â from the ranks of the technical intelligentsia, various parts of the state apparatus and the criminal underworld. The 1990s were a true Eldorado for this class, though often quite dangerous for its individual members. Using both legal and extralegal methods, it seized key enterprises and banks, which it either stripped of all assets or concentrated into giant holdings and investment groups. Profits were exported to tax havens. At the same time, it began to take control of the media and politics. Unlike its predecessors in the Stalinist nomenklatura, it also managed to integrate itself into the global capitalist class, at least in terms of the use of its consumption fund (yachts and luxury properties abroad, jets, as well as private investments in international financial markets).
Meanwhile, Ukraineâs real GDP per capita was in steady declineâ up until 2000. Average life expectancy decreased from 70.5 (in 1989) to 67.7 years. Non-payment of wages,[5] work in the informal economy, and a decline in purchasing power became everyday realities for the Ukrainian working class. Although the numerous strikes, marches, hunger strikes, and blockades have managed to score some local successes (e.g., the payment of wage arrears, postponement of privatization, etc.), they failed to change the overall course or create a broader movement.
The story so far is not that different from the Russian one.[6] However, the centralization and consolidation that Putin implemented after the Asian financial crisis and the collapse of the ruble (1997â98) never took place in Ukraine. Putin gradually nationalized some energy companies, built a âpower verticalâ, whose backbone was formed by security service cadres and various personal friends, and subordinated the oligarchs to this structure. The latter has since overseen the distribution of rent derived mainly from fossil fuel extraction. Ukraineâs domestic capitalist class, by contrast, has remained divided into competing âclansâ that are tied to specific sectors of the economy and geographic regions.[7] The rivalry between these factions of Ukrainian capital has been the basis of political instability.
The numerous movements of political protest which often also voiced social and welfare demands were always co-opted by a political project of one of the groups â either from the very beginning or gradually. The âUkraine without Kuchmaâ (2001â2002) and âArise, Ukraine!â (2002â2003) protests were directed against President Leonid Kuchma, involved in several scandals, including the murder of a journalist. The âOrange Revolutionâ (2004â2005) was in response to the electoral fraud of the then prime minister and presidential candidate Viktor Yanukovych, as well as the suspicious privatization of Ukraineâs largest steelworks in Kryvyi Rih (Dnipropetrovsk Oblast), in which Kuchmaâs brother-in-law was involved along with the former Donetsk gangster, Rinat Akhmetov. The movement âRise up, Ukraine!â (2013) opposed President Yanukovych and his attempts to consolidate power. Finally, the Euromaidan (2014) was a reaction to his decision not to sign the Association Agreement with the European Union. The most successful of these movements, the Orange Revolution, and the Euromaidan, may have led to a change of political leadership, but they did not significantly shake the position of the clans, let alone the clan system as such. Ultimately, they became a means of bringing another faction of the domestic business class to power.
The lumpen-capitalist competition, in which one or the other faction gained control of the state (and thus preferential access to loans, subsidies and contracts), explains, at least in part, why the state has failed to impose a long-term, viable development plan on the country. On the other hand, this unstable environment also left some room for the development of a resistant civil society, including independent trade unions, activist organizations, and the radical left.[8]
Russia maintained an influence over Ukraine through those sections of the local capitalist class that were materially interested in maintaining close relations â for example, in the interests of their own sales, favorable prices for inputs (especially, but not exclusively, energy inputs), or gas transfer fees. The capital base of this faction was mainly concentrated in the Donbas, the former industrial heartland of the Soviet Union, home to a large Russian-speaking population and the birthplace of the Stakhanovite âmovementâ. In the 1990s it was the scene of the bloodiest conflicts within the capitalist class, a center of organized crime â but also the epicenter of the tragedy of the âoldâ working class, especially the miners. Their mass strikes in the late 1980s and early 1990s helped destroy the Soviet regime and win Ukraineâs independence,[9] but after a wave of privatizations, asset stripping and bankruptcies, many found themselves with no jobs or prospects. Between 1992 and 2013, the population of Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts fell by 1.7 million, declining at twice the rate of the rest of the country.[10]
- karmĂna,âthe tragedy of the ukrainian working classâ (2022)
_ _ _
[3] This was about 76% of all eligible voters. In Crimea, support for independence was the weakest, at around 54% of the vote. Similarly in Crimeaâs Sevastopol, which was a separate constituency â 57%. In Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts, however, almost 84% of those who voted were in favor of independence. Wikipedia summarizes the results in detail.
[4] As recently as 2013, imports from Russia accounted for 29% of total imports of goods; exports to Russia accounted for almost 23% of Ukrainian exports of goods. By 2020, both indicators had dropped to 11% and 6%, respectively (see oec.world). On the other hand, exports to the EU15 already accounted for a larger share of total Ukrainian exports than exports to Russia in 2002. Thus, the dependence of Ukrainian industry on Russian gas and oil has played a decisive role.Â
[5] A specific feature of the Ukrainian (as well as Russian) transition was that official unemployment never reached a level close to twenty percent, such as in Poland (2002) or Slovakia (2001). Workers in enterprises that ran into trouble remained formally employed but were not paid â although in many cases they continued to work. Sometimes they received payments in kind instead of cash.
[6] Of course, in many respects it is also reminiscent of the history of other former Eastern Bloc countries, including Slovakia.
[7] The history and structure of the âclansâ is described in âThe Oligarchic Democracyâ by SĹawomir Matuszak. See also âThe Consolidation of Ukrainian Business Clansâ by Viatcheslav Avioutskii.
[8] A peculiar phenomenon of political life in Ukraine was the emergence of a seriesof fake left-wing groups founded around 2000 by the same circle of people. These pseudo-organizations established contacts with foreign âinternationalsâ, mainly of the Trotskyist variety, and lured material aid or money from them. It was enough to write that they identified with their political program and wanted to become a Ukrainian or Russian section. Despite personal meetings, it took three or four years for the foreign donors â delighted by the unexpected growth of the workersâ movement in the former Eastern Bloc â to discover that their âpartnersâ were in fact political hucksters. The scandal had seriously damaged the international reputation of the Ukrainian left, though one may also pause at the credulity of Western leftists.
[9] On earlier strikes by Donbas miners for economic demands and democratization, see the documentary Perestroika from Below (1989). Later strikes had more explicit political demands, including national independence. See the interviews with strike leaders in Donetsk, as well as a brief documentary (with English subtitles). The history of minersâ protest from perestroika to 2000 is summarized in an essay by Vlad Mykhnenko subtitled âUkrainian miners and their defeatâ. See also the recollections of the Dnipro working-class militant, Oleg Dubrovsky, in a 1996 interview (in English), as well as his analysis of the process of privatization of the mining industry (in Russian).
[10] One of the consequences of the disintegration of the mining industry in the Donbas has been the growth of illegal mining in the so-called kopanki. A section of the 2005 documentary, Workingmanâs Death, focuses on the phenomenon. The post-apocalyptic landscape of the Donetsk Oblast is depicted in the short documentary, Life After the Mine (2013).

UM, your jams sounds absolutely lovely, do you have any sort of recipe you'd be willing to share???
hiiiii anon!!!! of course i do!! here you go:
orange infused cranberry jam:
so i used 1kg of cranberries and 1kg white caster sugar, put them both in a pot and mixed them together so that the sugar was mixed in well before it went on the heat (it just makes it easier and its safer to mix sugar when its colder than hotter). then i put it on the heat and added in 1 cup freshly squeezed orange juice and 1/4 cup lemon juice. then you just leave it to simmer and bubble away on a high heat, stirring it every so often. add in some water (1/2 cup - no more) to help it along if you feel like the consistency is a bit thick. leave it on the heat to carry on simmering. then, from the oranges i used for the juice i added in previously, i got the peel and cut it into long strips and added it into the jam mixture and left it to simmer for another 10 minutes, continuously stirring it. then, turn the heat off and leave the jam to cool down a bit (i'd say for around 15-ish minutes). then, take the orange peels out, and use a hand blender to blend the jam so that the cranberries arent so chunky or whole. then, pour the jam into a sterilised jar and leave it to cool completely, then store it in the fridge!
cinnamon and vanilla infused bluberry jam:
so for this one, i used 750g of bluberries and 700g of white caster sugar, put both in a pot, mixed the two to combine, then put it on the heat. add 1/4 cup lemon juice, then leave it on a high heat to bubble and simmer away. this one won't need water, so dont add water. just stir it to help it along. then, add in 2 cinnamon sticks and let it continue to simmer for 10 minutes. right at the end, add in a few drops of pure vanilla extract and stir the jam, and then turn the heat off. let it cool for 15 minutes, and then take the cinnamon sticks out. then use your hand blender to blend the jam so that the blueberries aren't whole. pour it into a sterilised jar and let it cool completely, then store it in the fridge!
the blueberry jam is a bit more thinner in consistency than the cranberry one, so dont worry if you think the blueberry jam is looking runny! in the fridge and overtime, both jams do set a bit, but the consistencies/thicknesses of both jams are different.
anyway! they're both lovely and rich and beautiful in colour and very flavoursome and will last you for quite a bit!
they're also really cute and lowcosting as a gift idea as well if you give them away in those super cute mini jam bottles (my family always look forward to them!!) - i often just pick up whatever fruit i see in the local market that's cheap or on offer - last year it was cranberries, this year it was blueberries!
happy jamming!!! đ§Ą
#faiza answers#faiza cooks#i made rosehip + elderflower jam too for my university dissertation bc i picked some from my local garden centre which came v v nice too!#tho i do appreciate that rosehips are difficult to find.
