Disney princess discourse angers me cause I would love to discuss the subtle misogyny in Cinderella (1950) but I can’t because all the “feminist criticism” is victim blaming bullshit based entirely in pop culture misconceptions.
Like no!!! Cinderella is not problematic because she waits for a Prince to save her. However!!! Can we please talk about how the film makers basically made the mice the main characters who drive most of the action??? Like Cinderella does in fact get saved by a man and it’s fucking JACQUES
Or how yes being “passive” does not inherently make her weak!! Kindness, patience, and endurance are deeply valuable character traits. Them being associated with femininity does not make them lesser than. However!! Can we please discuss how Cinderella (written by men in the 1940s/50s) is all good vibes and no flaws??? How easily it can be interpreted not as a survivor narrative but “take your abuse and maybe one day it’ll magically stop”
It’s a really interesting conversation!! With lots of nuance and multiple interpretations!! Please disagree with me!! Yet everyone is busy internet slap fighting over tHe ShOe Is GoInG tO fIt MuLtIPlE gIrLs
YOU KNOW THE THING THATS OPENLY ACKNOWLEDGED IN THE MOVIE
#Don’t even get me started on how this is all Perrault and Grimm’s fault#Also this applies to other Disney princesses!!#I will defend how Ariel didn’t do shit for a man till my dying day but also she was given like nothing to do in the climax#Or how marriage is consistently framed as a prerequisite for happiness in many of these films#Or how frozen spends most of its runtime focusing on Anna’s relationships with men#not Elsa#Sigh.#cinderella#cinderella 1950#disney movies#disney princesses#disney cinderella#disney
