29th August 1999 saw the death of Lew Schwarz, the Scottish TV scriptwriter.

Lew was born in Glasgow on April 16th, 1926, the son of an optician, and educated at the St Aloysius Jesuit College, graduating to the Holyrood Secondary Modern School.

On leaving school he took a job at the Clyde shipyards as a riveter. In 1944 he joined the RAF as a flight engineer and flew Lancaster bombers over Germany. After the war he returned to Scotland, furthering his education at Glasgow University before moving to London in the 1950s. There he took on a job as a taxi driver, married Margaret Glen of Airdrie, and in due time fathered three sons and two daughters.

It was while driving his taxi that Schwarz sold his first few comedy gags. Always a fan of radio-show comedy, he sent his samples to Richard Murdoch, then starring with Kenneth Horne in Much Binding In The Marsh, The Forces Show, and other prominent BBC series. Murdoch bought them, thus starting Schwarz on a career which would soon spread from spare time to full time.

It was through his taxi-driving that Schwarz encountered Spike Milligan, writer and star of The Goon Show. They got to chatting about comedy and Milligan invited Schwarz to come up to the office he and some writer friends used as a base. This was situated over a greengrocer's shop in Shepherd's Bush, not far from the BBC Television studios. Schwarz was delighted to meet Milligan's partners in laughter: Eric Sykes, Johnny Speight, Ray Galton, and Alan Simpson, all great names in comedy creation

Joining the group as a gag writer, Schwarz was taken on as a partner by another big name in comedy, Eric Merriman. Together they wrote their first TV series, Great Scott - It's Maynard! This starred two popular stand-up comedians, Terry Scott, who frequently played an overgrown schoolboy, and Bill Maynard, not yet the chunky character he would become. The show mixed short sketches with situation comedy, aThe Charlie Drake Shownd was a great success. In the 50′s he also wrote episodes of

Lew went on to write a host of other shows, The Army Game, Mess Mates and The Dick Emery Show in the 60′s as well as scripting 3 episodes of The Andy Stewart Show.

In the 70′s he wrote scripts for Harry Secombe, Dave Allen and Norman Wisdom, as well as writing for Carry on Laughing and the popular sitcom The Liver Birds, which Schwarz originated with Carla Lane. Schwartz also penned some mainstream drama like Crown Court, Crossroads and an episode of Space;1999.

Closing his comedy career teaching creative writing at an adult educational college, Schwarz wrote a book, The Craft of Writing TV comedy. He summed up his career thus: ''Writing comedy for television is a very serious business.''

So I went out not all that long ago because I needed to go pick up Joey’s glasses while he was at work. Easy peezy, even for me.

I open the door, step out to lock it, and turn my head to see two dogs barrelling up the road at me. Now, if I wasn’t half blind I might have seen them sooner and realised the body language was of a friendly pup, but they were fairly close by the time I noticed so I was quickly trying to mentally prep myself to put the boot to it if it tried anything when it jumped up on me and started wiggling a lot.

Ok, friendly dog, gonna give it some pets. I don’t see any tags, so maybe it’s owner is close? They’ll call the dog, I’m sure. Ok, pets complete, bye pupper!

No, it was not bye pupper. Dogs proceeded to run in front of me, up the little stair alleyway path thing I use as a shortcut. Ok, dogs going on an adventure!

Except they kept running ahead of me. I called out, they didn’t listen. Ok, well, maybe they’ll get bored and go back to the park, it’s not that far away. Dogs are continuing to zig zag across the street, people are outside. Great, they all think these are my fucking dogs. I keep going because I need to get into city center before Joey gets on the train home and they could be busy. (spoiler: opticians was busy.) while trying to call out the dogs and tell them to go home or whatever to try to get them to stop. (spoiler: they didn’t)

There is a preschool/day care? thing at the bottom of the hill, very well fenced off so that was ok, kids are totally safe, but even more people now and these two dogs are zigzaging down the street and I’m feeling real embarassed because now all these people are looking at me like they are my dogs and I can’t get them under control. One dog gets bored, goes off down a street back in the vague direction of the park. OK, cool, be safe dog!

The dog that I had pet though continued running ahead because people had dogs. Ok, maybe they know who’s dog it is. NOPE, friendly dog just fucking stole another dog’s ball right out of it’s mouth, and runs even further ahead and attatches itself to some lady. Dog lady asks other lady if dog was hers, lady points at me, and I go ‘Ain’t mine, it’s been running ahead of me since <my street name>, I didn’t see any tags on it so I don’t know who’s it is?’ and then me and the dog lady talked a bit, dog progressively getting further and further ahead, and we worry about it going to get hit by a car or something. We split up and I keep heading into town. Just ahead, dog is actively running down the road, and another dog lady and lady with kids ask if it’s mine, and I tell them it isn’t and I didn’t see any tags. Dog Lady 2 seems to have a plan, dog is out of my sight now so I have no idea where it went. I had to stop for a minute and text Joey and tell him what the fuck was happening exactly because this is so unreal to me.

Last I saw, the other two ladies were going up a side road and I hope they find that dog, I didn’t have time to help them look for it, but I did look as I was going incase it went up a side road on my side of the street. (also I don’t know the residential areas of Lancaster that well still and I’m sure I’d get very lost, weh.)

But here’s the huge thing about all this. OK, I understand if you have your dog off the leash -- IN A FUCKING DOG PARK, which is NOT what is at the bottom of the hill by my house, or if you have enough command over your pet to keep them close and not have them fuck off across the neighbourhood. If you live in a City, in most places you are required to have tags on them in case they get out and run away so people can get the dog back to you. I’m not sure if it’s completely the same here in the UK because I don’t own a dog, but if your pet might go out tags seem like a no brainer? I got them for my cats and they don’t even go outside really, they just stick their head out the door and try to eat the plants that have punched through the stone sidewalk, or indeed my stone back yard, lol.

But the real piss off for me in all this is? Joey’s scared of dogs. Guy would have shat full sized bricks when the dog jumped on him, and then what? I’d be trying to calm him down from a panic attack, hopefully before it became a asthma attack, before heading off into town and dogs having gone fuck knows where. At least because I went out today some people have a vague idea where the dog has gone now.

If you can’t keep control of your fucking dog, I don’t care how friendly it is: DO NOT HAVE A DOG. Dog broke out of your yard? Ok, shit happens, but do you have tags? Don’t come crying if your dog gets picked up and you have to pay out the ass to get them back because you are a irresponsible asshat.
