Huawei Band Review: A little different from the pack
The Huawei Band slots right in between regular fitness bands and a fitness watch
Huawei has been a constant presence in the fitness wearables segment in India over the past several years. The Band 6 that we have for review today is the sixth iteration of their fitness band, and it's an interesting one. One thing I generally miss in fitness bands is a larger display. I know, it's a band and needs to be sleek, but Huawei has looked to address that issue here. The Huawei Band 6 slots right in between regular fitness bands and a fitness watch, courtesy of its larger than usual display. The slightly larger footprint also lets it pack a higher capacity battery and a bunch of useful sensors. The pricing is more than entry level fitness bands but it also offers some features that are hard to find on most of its competitors. Let's see how it performs and if it deserves the premium.
Design and comfort
Looks pleasantly different; comfortable to wear all day SpO2 and heart rate sensors are located at the back, along with charging points
The Huawei Band 6 is well built and comes with a smooth matte finish that gives it a premium look. Despite that, the band is fairly light and weighs just 18gm (without the straps). This band does not use standard sized straps, and the pre-installed ones are not so easy to replace. The straps are made of UV-treated silicone that is skin-friendly, and they are indeed comfortable to wear all day without any irritation. The SpO2 and heart rate sensors are located at the back, along with two charging points. There is a single physical button on the side that turns on the screen when pressed and also doubles up as a shortcut to all the key functions of this band. That button along with the touchscreen display let you access the menus and different functions of this device. All in all, this fitness band looks good around the wrist even if you have slim ones, and the larger display offers better readability.
About the display
Sharp and sizeable display, but best watch faces are paid Swipe left or right to cycle through widgets like daily activity progress
Speaking of display, this Huawei band has a rectangular 1.47-inch AMOLED touchscreen display with a resolution of 194x368 pixels and a curved glass on top. The screen is sharp and colors pop nicely. There is no mention of scratch protection or oleophobic coating in the spec-sheet, but there were absolutely no scratches on the screen after a few weeks of usage. There were hardly any fingerprints or smudges on the screen either, and rarely did I need to wipe it. The screen has five levels of brightness; it is perfectly legible indoors at level 3, but you will need to push it to level 4 or 5 outdoors under bright sunlight. Flicking the wrist turns the screen on, and it works as expected. This feature can be scheduled to stay off during your sleep hours or one can simply turn on night mode that also disables incoming call alerts and other notifications. You will need to press the physical button to wake the screen during that period. The watch comes preloaded with a handful of faces, and you can add more of your choice from the companion app. While the watch face library is fairly elaborate, most of the options I liked were not free. They aren't expensive but the app often keeps recommending a lot of paid options even when you are sampling the free ones, and it can get irritating after a while. You get a good mix of digital and analog faces and also some artistic variety that show useful fitness data along with time. The good part is the watch helps you store and switch between a lot of these faces without the need to go back to the app. Generally, fitness bands let you store about half a dozen faces. I tried storing 14 on the Huawei Band 6, including the preinstalled ones, and they happily coexisted.
UI and App
Simple user interface, well-organized companion app The app interface looks neat and clean and displays information about various fitness parameters
The user interface of this fitness band is simple and straightforward. Swipe down on the screen for quick settings, swipe up to check the notifications from various apps, and swipe left or right to cycle through widgets like daily activity progress, heart rate, stress levels etc. Touch and hold gesture on the home screen lets you cycle through and change watch faces. And lastly, pressing the physical button grants you access to all the functions and workout modes of this watch. You need to install the Huawei Health app on your smartphone and sync the Band 6 with it over Bluetooth. It is available on both Android and iOS. The app, however, asks for way too many permissions to perform multiple tasks. Allow whatever you are comfortable with. The app interface looks neat and clean and displays last workout record, steps count, workout duration, calories burnt, distance traveled, most recent SpO2 reading, sleep data, stress level and heart rate graphs. You can tap on either of the tiles to gain deeper insight into each aspect. You can also access watch settings and watch faces, along with detailed breakdown of daily, weekly or monthly fitness activities. In case you aspire to train for marathons, this app guides you through your training process suggesting the kind of speeds and heart rate you should maintain at different stages of the run.
Overall Performance
Brisk oximeter, detailed sleep and fitness tracking, except steps counter The SpO2 sensor is quite good and provides accurate readings
The SpO2 sensor is quite good and provides accurate readings that are comparable to a basic over-the-counter Oximeter. While it's not as fast, I did find it noticeably faster than those you get in most budget fitness watches. You need to keep your hand steady for about 20 seconds to get an accurate reading. This band supports all day SpO2 monitoring too, and even when you are asleep. As always, these readings are meant to serve as a broad guideline and not replace dedicated medical equipment. Sleep tracking on this band is fairly accurate and detailed. It not only measures the quantum of light sleep, deep sleep, REM sleep and awake time, it also tracks your deep sleep continuity and breathing quality. Based on all these parameters, you get a sleep score and a variety of advice on how to improve it further. You get all day stress monitoring too, and it provides some guided breathing techniques to lower it. Menstrual cycle tracking is also available on this band. Huawei claims that one can choose from 96 different exercise modes. I could spot the usual walking, running, swimming, jump rope, elliptical, rowing and a few others. I believe the rest are derivatives of these workouts. Some activities have indoor as well as outdoor tracking options. This band doesn't have built-in GPS, and during outdoor activities, you can use assisted GPS to track distance. For that you need to carry your phone along for the band to utilize its GPS. Otherwise, the band uses the built-in pedometer to count steps, which is temperamental to say the least. It tends to be too generous with your steps count and registers steps if you throw your arms around even when stationary. Long story short, it records a lot of false steps when not in a workout mode. The device is 5ATM water resistant and can survive up to 50 meters deep water.
Smart features, Battery
Good battery life for a fitness band, quick charging The charging module has two pins that magnetically attach to the base of the band
This is not a smartwatch and you only have a handful of so-called smart features. Beyond fitness, you can receive call alerts, messages and app notifications on the phone screen, but you can't answer calls or reply to messages. However, most of the stuff is legible on its decent sized screen. You also get controls to manage the music playback on the phone from the watch without touching the phone. Further, you get weather updates from time to time and sedentary reminders if you are stationary for too long. The company advertises a battery life of two weeks for the Huawei Band 6 under typical usage scenario that is defined as 'heart-rate monitoring and sleep tracking on, screen checked briefly 200 times within 24 hours and workout for 30 minutes per week'. The battery life figure may seem a bit too ambitious for a fitness band, but I did manage to get close to 12 days out of it with similar parameters as above but with three hours of workout in that period. Include a couple of SpO2 readings daily and that's not a bad number at all. The charging module here is really tiny and is essentially just two pins that magnetically attach to the base of the band, and on the other end of the cable is a USB port that can be connected to any standard USB charger. It takes well under an hour to charge this band fully, and the company states that just five minutes of charging can keep the band powered for two days; a claim I could not verify as I forgot to stop charging it after five minutes.
Price and verdict
Slightly expensive but offers a few extras over budget band Pressing the physical button grants you access to all the functions and workout modes
The Huawei Band 6 is priced at Rs. 4,490 in India with a one year warranty and often drops by Rs. 500 on Amazon India. The price may seem a little higher than popular fitness bands from OPPO, OnePlus or Xiaomi that sell under Rs. 3,000, and while they offer comparable features, none of them sport a screen this big or offer as much battery backup. Barring the steps counter, most of the things function as expected, and the level of tracking is quite impressive. Add to that an uncomplicated user interface, a good companion app, and the Band 6 justifies the small premium that it demands. If a larger display is not a necessity, you can consider the OPPO Band Style and save a few bucks. In case you need a bigger display (though not AMOLED) and built-in GPS in this budget, you have options like the Amazfit BIP U Pro and Realme Watch 2 Pro that sell for a similar price. Take your pick!
Our rating

How does OPPO band compare with the fitness bands of Honor, Mi, and OnePlus?
Launched on the 8th of March, the OPPO Smart Band Style will give many of its competitors a run for their money. With this product, the OPPO brand has ventured into the budget fitness tracker segment in India. Priced at roughly Rs. 3,999, this fitness band sports a simple design in a capsule-shaped module inside a silicone strap.
A 2.5D curved glass accompanies the 1.1-inch AMOLED display for protecting the screen. The fitness band is water-resistant up to 50 metres, with a 5ATM certification.
It is capable of tracking 12 workout modes that include reduced-fat running, training assistant, indoor running, outdoor running, walking, cycling, indoor cycling, swimming, elliptical machine, rowing machine, badminton, free training.
However, the major highlight of the OPPO Smart Band Style is its continuous Sp O2 monitoring, which helps you track the oxygen level in your blood. The best part is, this function is active even when you are sleeping, which can detect drops in oxygen level at night.
This in turn, is highly crucial in identifying sleep breathing problems, and providing alerts whenever the band senses potential health risks. This is all the more important for brain workers, snorers, and senior citizens.
Backed by 16 months of continuous research and development, OPPO could incorporate this technology in this fitness band. Unlike most blood oxygen monitors available in the market, this does not depend on isolated readings reflecting the blood oxygen level of a single instant.
It also offers features like sleep monitoring, besides daily activity trackers such as steps taken, calories burnt, distance travelled, and sedentary reminder. Additionally, OPPO has equipped the product with a host of innovative features such as notification mirroring, caller ID display, reject calls, stopwatch, alarm clock, weather, music control, and find my phone.
In terms of battery life, the 100mAh battery unit will last for about 12 days on a single charge. However, it also depends on usage habits. The charger in the package will be able to charge this product fully in 90 minutes. What’s more, the OPPO Band supports over 40 watch faces, depending on the requirement.
If you are keen to buy this, you can check it out on Amazon.
Let’s look at some of the wearables from other players that the OPPO Band will take on.
1. Honor 5 Fitness Band: This fitness tracker flaunts a 0.95-inch AMOLED display and can track sleep patterns as well as heart rate. Water-resistant up to 50m, this fitness band also has multiple watch faces to choose from.
It offers a simple, easy-to-use UI and can display the number of steps you’ve taken, your heart rate, sleep duration, workout details, and other notifications. It also buzzes you if you have been inactive for a considerable period of time. You can choose from nine workout options from the workout tab, including a free training mode.
You can track indoor as well as outdoor runs, besides swimming. Thanks to a recent update, it now boasts music controls and SpO2 (blood oxygen level) tracking. Going by the claims of Honor, this fitness band will deliver 14 days of battery life, while the charger takes about 1 hour 20 minutes to charge the Band completely.
2. Mi Band 5: This latest offering from Xiaomi in the fitness band category sports a 1.1-inch AMOLED colour display and comes in 5 strap colours. Thanks to the 5ATM waterproofing, you can use it in a swimming pool and also in the shower.
It offers 11 professional sports modes, including outdoor running, treadmill, cycling, indoor cycling, walking, elliptical machine, rowing machine, yoga, jump rope, pool swimming, and freestyle. You can also keep a tab on your steps taken and calories burnt, PAI index, heart rate stats, notifications, stress level, breathing level, and menstrual cycle monitor.
There are 100 watch faces to choose from. Tracking stress and menstrual cycles are the newly added features that make this fitness band stand apart. You can expect two weeks of battery life, and the wearable takes a little more than 2 hours for a full charge.
3. OnePlus Band: The first fitness band from OnePlus, this product comes with a 1.1-inch AMOLED display and offers 5ATM of water-resistance. It is capable of SpO2 tracking, besides letting you check your daily activity, heart rate, sleep duration, and the weather. Powered by a 100mAh battery with 14 days of battery life, it can store up to 5 watch faces at a time.
The dual colour band is one of the key design elements. This fitness tracker supports Bluetooth 5, lets you access notifications, read incoming messages, etc.; it is also equipped with a Breathe app for guided breathing exercises. The multiple workout modes cover outdoor walking, cycling, running, cricket, badminton, and swimming.

New Post has been published on https://magzoso.com/tech/vivo-s1-pro-review/
Vivo S1 Pro Review
Vivo recently launched a new phone in its style-centric S series, called the S1Pro. This model is a follow-up to the Vivo S1 (Review), which launched last year. Just like the its sibling, the focus for the S1 Pro is on design, in particular the new minimalistic, diamond-shaped camera module on the rear. Also, unlike the Vivo S1, the S1 Pro gets a modern USB Type-C port.
Vivo has launched just a single version of this phone, priced at Rs. 19,990 in India. This puts it against phones such as the Realme X2 (Review), Redmi K20 (Review), and a more recent entry — the Oppo F15 (Review). So, is the new Vivo S1 Pro worth buying at this price? Let’s find out.
Vivo S1 Pro design
The Vivo S1 is a good-looking phone, and the S1 Pro follows that tradition. The diamond pattern on the back has gone and in its place, we have a choice of three different gradient finishes. The one we have is called ‘Jazzy Blue’ but this phone is also available in ‘Dreamy White’ and ‘Mystic Black’ trims. The S1 Pro feels a little chunky at 8.68mm thick, and after prolonged one-handed use, the 186g weight is noticeable. The rounded edges and tapering back make it easier to hold, and despite the glossy finish, we didn’t find it to be too slippery. The back isn’t glass though, as Vivo still uses laminated plastic.
In the front, we have a 6.38-inch Super AMOLED display with a full-HD+ resolution. There’s an in-display fingerprint sensor too, which works well. Vivo has also thrown in some nice unlock animations to choose from. Face unlock is present too, which is reliable but just not as quick as the implementations on other phones at this price level. The display has a screen protector pre-applied, which gets annoying quickly as the edges graze against your skin when using gestures.
The Vivo S1 Pro has a vivid display, with good brightness and saturation
The button placement on the Vivo S1 Pro is good. On the left, there’s a tray for either two Nano-SIMs or a single Nano-SIM and a microSD card. We would have preferred a dedicated slot for memory expansion. At the bottom, we have a USB Type-C port and speaker, and there’s a headphone jack on the top.
The back of the phone is where the S1 Pro stands out in terms of design. Apart from the jazzy colour, we really liked the slim profile of the camera module, which barely protrudes at all. The LED flash is placed outside the camera module. Below that, we have Vivo’s logo and tagline.
In the box, the Vivo S1 Pro ships with the usual accessories such as a silicone case, a Type-C cable, an 18W charger, and a headset.
Vivo S1 Pro specifications and software
The Vivo S1 Pro is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 octa-core SoC, which we’re a little surprised to see, considering that it’s typically found in phones closer to the Rs. 10,000 mark, such as the Realme 5i (Review) and Redmi Note 8 (Review). This isn’t a bad processor by any means, but driving a full-HD+ display in heavy games could be challenging. Thankfully, Vivo has also kitted this phone with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, and this is the only configuration on sale.
Other specifications include dual 4G VoLTE, dual-band Wi-Fi ac, Bluetooth 5, FM radio, GPS, USB-OTG, and support for Google’s Widevine L1 DRM certification. There’s the usual suite of sensors too, including a gyroscope and compass.
The Vivo S1 Pro has a hybrid dual-SIM tray
For software, we have Vivo’s Funtouch OS 9.2, which is based on Android 9 Pie. The phone also had the December 2019 security patch, is fairly recent too. The interface is still unnecessarily complicated, and we really wish Vivo would overhaul this soon. The swipe-up gesture to access system shortcuts can be confusing for novice users, since we’re used to seeing them in the notification shade. Also, when using the phone in landscape mode, the gesture still has to be made from the same side of the screen, which is annoying.
There’s a lot of bloatware preinstalled on the Vivo S1 Pro, but all the third-party apps can be removed. There are some redundant ones form Vivo, such as its own browser and app store, which can’t be removed. We’ve already covered the various shortcuts and customisation options for Funtouch OS in our earlier reviews of the Vivo V17 (Review) and Vivo U20 (Review), so you can take a look at them for more details.
Vivo S1 Pro performance and battery life
The Vivo S1 Pro works well as a daily driver, and is something you’ll want to show off. The design of the camera module sets it apart from the rest of the phones in its segment, most of which have similar vertical camera strips. The display gets very bright, making it easily legible even under direct sunlight. The colours are also very vivid thanks to the AMOLED panel, and text and icons are adequately sharp. The Snapdragon 665 handles multitasking well but it’s not the strongest chip for handling heavy games.
PUBG Mobile struggled to run at a smooth framerate even at the Low graphics preset. The game was playable but a little jerky at times. We didn’t notice any overheating, thankfully, even after 30 minutes of gameplay. The single speaker doesn’t get too loud and the sound is a little tinny. Videos are enjoyable thanks to the vivid display, though.
The Vivo S1 Pro looks stylish, thanks to a neat gradient finish
The Vivo S1 Pro packs in a 4,500mAh battery, which easily lasted us for a day and half, if not more, even with rigorous usage. In our HD video battery loop test, the phone ran for 17 hours and 7 minutes, which is a good amount of time. Vivo uses its Dual Engine Fast Charge feature, but the charger you get in the box isn’t very quick to top up such a large capacity quickly. In our testing, we managed to get the S1 Pro to 31 percent in 30 minutes and about 61 percent in an hour. Charging the phone completely took about two and a half hours.
Vivo S1 Pro cameras
Vivo has set up the S1 Pro with four rear cameras. These are a primary 48-megapixel camera with an f/1.8 aperture; an 8-megapixel wide-angle camera with an f/2.2 aperture; a 2-megapixel macro camera; and a 2-megapixel depth camera. In the front, we have a 32-megapixel selfie camera with an f/2.0 aperture. The camera app is easy to use, with most of the shooting modes placed above the shutter button. Some commonly used and important controls, for the ultra-wide camera, bokeh, and macro modes, are placed in a separate carousel menu, which needs additional taps to get to. We didn’t find this to be very convenient during our usage.
In daylight, the Vivo S1 Pro managed to capture average-looking landscape shots. Details were decent and colours were alright, but images lacked depth. Objects at the sides of the frame also had a bit of grain. HDR kicks in when needed, but the end result wasn’t always very good. Some images had a very cool, bluish hue to them, which looked unnatural. Close-ups fared better, with good bokeh and details in objects. The wide-angle camera offered a nice perspective, but colours weren’t very accurate.

With bokeh mode enabled, the Vivo S1 Pro’s depth camera did a decent job of detecting edges, and blurred out the right areas. Colours and details were also good. The macro camera was handy at times, but it’s not something we found super useful.
Low-light photos were just strictly average. Focusing was a lot slower in the dark, and it took a second or two longer to save each photo. There’s no dedicated night shooting mode either. In landscape shots, we noticed that details were generally mushy and there was visible grain in the shadow regions.
The S1 Pro redeemed itself somewhat with the selfie camera, which captured detailed photos when shooting under ideal light. Results were fairly good even when shooting against the light. However, the photos captured were at the full 32-megapixel resolution, instead of pixel-binned shots, which is what we’d have preferred. Low-light selfies were grainy, but the screen flash can help a bit. The ‘Portrait’ shooting mode lets you add beauty filters but there’s no option for a background bokeh effect with the front camera.

Videos can only be recorded at up to 1080p, which is not great, especially at this price. Unfortunately, there’s no stabilisation either, which is a big letdown. The selfie camera can shoot up to 1080p too, but again, without any stabilisation. Low-light video was not very good, and had lots of grain as well as weak details. The wide-angle camera shot even poorer footage in low-light, making it unusable.
Verdict
The Vivo S1 Pro is a good looking-phone with a crisp display and solid battery life. True to the theme of the S series, the design is eye-catching, and the new gradient finish as well as the diamond-shaped camera module helps this phone stand out among its peers. However, just like its sibling, the S1, and even the recently launched Oppo F15, Vivo seems to have prioritised style over everything else and gone with a pretty underpowered processor for this price bracket.
We’re not sure if there’s a method to this madness, but if you’re hoping to play heavy games and take great photos, the S1 Pro is not the phone for you. Other options at this price level, such as the Realme X2 (Review) and the Redmi K20 (Review), have much more powerful SoCs and will hold up much better over the next few years.
We quite liked the performance of the selfie camera though, and it will work well as long as you’re shooting under good light. The rear cameras are a bit underwhelming, and while you can get usable shots, consistency is definitely missing. The S1 Pro also lacks a dedicated microSD card slot, and Vivo’s custom software could really use an overhaul.
Overall, the Vivo S1 Pro is not a bad pick if all you want is a stylish design, good battery life, and a punchy display. If you’d prefer a more well-rounded phone though, we suggest looking at offerings from Realme and Xiaomi instead.

Oppo Enco M31 wireless earphones review
The Enco M31 are the latest pair of wireless earphones from Oppo. On paper, the Enco M31 seem fully featured, with LDAC, Hi-Res Wireless Audio certification, IPX5 certified water resistance, and Ai-powered noise cancellation for voice calls, all at a relatively affordable price.
The inclusion of LDAC alone should put a smile on a few faces, as support for this codec is largely absent in budget audio gear. And the Enco M31 is well and truly “budget”; I picked up this pair for INR 1999 from Amazon India, which is only about $26. So what’s the catch and how do they perform? Let’s find out.
Design
The Oppo Enco M31 are a neckband-style of wireless Bluetooth earphones. They also feature magnetized speakers so when not in use, the two speakers snap together keeping them together and also switching them off in the process.
The rubber neckband terminates in elongated modules on either side that includes all the electronics, batteries, and also the controls on the left unit. The cables emanate from each side leading to the compact earbuds at the other end.
The design of the Enco M31 has two issues — which aren’t deal-breakers, certainly not at this price — but can still be a bit annoying.
First, there is no easy way to tell the left speaker from the right with just a glance before you put on the band around your neck. The earbuds are a bit small and not easy to identify. The band itself from outside looks quite similar regardless of how you hold it. The easiest way to tell if you’re wearing it the right way is by running your fingers on the inside of the band to check for the buttons, which are only on the left side but have a design similar to that of the right side.
This might sound like a nitpick but after the dozenth time of putting them on the wrong way around and having to flip them over, it got tiring pretty quickly. Most other neckband style Bluetooth earphones have their controls placed on the cable rather than the neckband itself, which makes it easy to tell the left side from the right. The cables on the Enco M31, however, look identical.
This is brought on by Oppo having placed the controls on the inside of the left module on the neckband, which is also the second issue I have with the design. Other than making it difficult to tell the left speaker apart from the right one, the controls are also just difficult to use. Controls on cables can be used quite easily with your thumb but these require you to run your finger on the inside of your band till you find the buttons.
The layout of the buttons is also odd; the topmost button increases the volume, the middle button reduces the volume, and the lower button controls playback. The buttons are quite large but the odd layout makes it difficult to get used to them.
The earbuds at the end of the cables are some of the smallest I’ve used. The body of the earbuds is only slightly larger than the silicone ear tip attached to them. The whole thing fits completely flush within your outer ear and had it not been for the cables hanging out, you wouldn’t even be able to see them from the front. This also means you can lie on your side while wearing them in bed.
The earbuds aren’t completely discreet as they have a large silver surface on the outside, with a spun-metal finish underneath a clear plastic layer. The green model is even flashier, with a shiny gold pattern on the earbuds with matching gold cables and gold accents on the neckband. It does look quite striking but sadly wasn’t in stock when I ordered our pair so I went with the more sober black version.
The overall build quality is decent. It doesn’t seem particularly sturdy as the cables are quite thin but after a month of use, I haven’t had any reason to doubt their durability. It’s also impressive that Oppo managed to include IPX5 water-resistance at this price point, which should help protect these against water and sweat.
Comfort
No complaints here; the Oppo Enco M31 is a very lightweight and comfortable pair of earphones. Had it not been for the cables that are often in your peripheral vision, you would forget you are even wearing them. The only annoyance is the aforementioned awkward placement of controls on the inside of the neckband that’s not as easy to operate as cable-based controls.
Software and Features
The Oppo Enco M31 has no companion app. You pair it as you normally would through your phone’s Bluetooth settings. There’s no NFC here so you have to do it manually. The only exception here are select Oppo phones running ColorOS 7.0 or higher. On these phones, you should get a quick pairing prompt to speed up the pairing process.
The Enco M31 uses single 9.2mm full range dynamic drivers with PET titanium-plated composite diaphragms. Oppo claims these are capable of reproducing frequencies up to 40kHz, which also earns them the Hi-Res Audio certification.
The earphones support Bluetooth 5.0 with a range of about 10m. For audio transmission, the Enco M31 uses LDAC, AAC, or SBC codecs. LDAC is supported up to 990kbps, although the actual bitrate used will depend upon your device. Most Android devices don’t necessarily default to 990kbps so you might have to switch to it manually through developer settings.
Unfortunately, this gets reset every time you disconnect the earphones so it has to be done every time you want to use them. It’s the only hassle with LDAC if you want to ensure you are getting the best out of the codec as the base 330kbps mode isn’t any better than SBC or AAC.
The Enco M31 doesn’t have too many other features. There is a Bass Mode, which can be activated by double-clicking the play/pause button. The problem with this is that it gets reset back to Balanced Mode when the earphones are switched off, so it’s a bit of a hassle to use if you want it enabled all the time.
There’s also ‘AI-powered’ noise-canceling for ambient sound during calls, which ensures the person you are calling hears your voice better. It doesn’t cancel the ambient noise for you as they aren’t active noise-canceling earphones.
Performance
Let’s move to the audio quality, which is easily the best reason to purchase the Oppo Enco M31. As far as that is concerned, the Enco M31 are the best wireless earphones you can get in this price category and also several categories higher. They are one of the most musically gifted pair of earphones I’ve tried in a while, especially after being exposed to a deluge of budget wireless earphones in recent times.
The Enco M31 have a wonderfully crisp, clean sound that revels in every part of the frequency spectrum equally. It’s balanced sounding without being boring, interesting without being too analytical and goes well with just about any genre of content out there.
Starting with the bass, the Enco M31 have a very restrained low-end response with a beautifully tuned bass line. The bass is warm, engaging, and packs enough punch to keep even the livelier electronic genres of music feeling impactful without ruining the balance of other, more somber genres. It never overwhelms the mid-range and you can quite clearly draw the line between the two.
Of course, an accurate or a relatively accurate bass response comes across as lacking to the untrained ear, so to avoid the usual “no BASS” reviews on Amazon, Oppo has included a Bass Mode, which can be activated by double-clicking the play/pause button. It does what it says on the tin, inflating the low-end to indecent levels to keep the bass heads happy.
Personally, it’s not to my taste as I prefer the appropriately named Balanced Mode. The sound gets unbalanced and the bass lacks the definition and quality that it had in Balanced Mode. But it’s there if you need it but as mentioned before, the earphones will reset to Balanced Mode when switched off.
The mids are also really good, rendering instruments and vocals with equal aplomb. It’s high enough resolution to bring out some of the minor details in songs that you may not have heard before. Also, as with the bass, the mids are relatively uncolored other than a very slight bias towards warmth, so most voices and instruments sound how they should. This also makes these earphones great for things like podcasts, audiobooks, movies, and games.
The high-end reproduction is also impressive. As with the low-end, Oppo has shown some restraint in tuning, which means you don’t get some of the sibilance and shimmer with the S and T sounds. Despite that, there’s still an impressive amount of detail to be found here, with string instruments, in particular, coming to life. The high-frequency extension is also quite good with the sound extending about as high as your hearing will go. Oppo claims a 40kHz ceiling for the drivers but there’s not much point to that figure unless you have superhuman hearing or you’re a dog, in which case good job reading this far and even managing to open the site.
The Enco M31 also has excellent imaging, as is expected of all modern earphones or headphones. The soundstage is average considering these are still in-ear earphones, so you won’t get the speaker-like soundstage of big, open-back headphones but at the same time it’s also not particularly congested.
I tested the earphones with a OnePlus 8 Pro manually locked to 990kbps FLAC and also with an iPhone XR using AAC. I didn’t notice any real difference in audio quality beyond what can be attributed to just placebo, which is to say these earphones sound great regardless of what device you pair them to.
Before moving on to the other aspects of the performance, I should mention the volume control on these earphones. The Enco M31 don’t get very loud and as a result, I found myself using them close to 90% volume most of the time. There are parts of the volume range, especially in the 20-50% range where the volume doesn’t seem to increase much at all. Now, this isn’t a huge complaint as I never found it lacking and the maximum volume was still plenty loud for me but it’s worth mentioning in case you are hard of hearing or listening in louder environments.
Next up is the microphone performance. The microphone on the Enco M31 isn’t great. There’s not much bass in voices but there’s a lot of hiss and sibilance. Also, the AI noise reduction doesn’t seem to do much at all, as there was still plenty of noise in the background. Callers also occasionally complained about not hearing my voice clearly. So not the best option for those who have to make a lot of voice calls.
Finally, the latency on the Enco M31 is reasonably low. Watching videos and movies is a perfectly good experience as the lag is imperceptible. In games, you do get some lag between, say, tapping the shoot button and hearing the gun go off but it’s not significant nor difficult to deal with.
Battery Life
The Enco M31 does not have exceptional battery life. Oppo claims 8 hours on LDAC and 12 hours with the SBC codec.
In my testing, the Enco M31 lasted for 7.5 hours when testing with LDAC 990kbps codec. Instead of testing with SBC, I tested with AAC on an iPhone and that resulted in 11 hours of battery life. So just short of Oppo’s claimed figures, which is to be expected.
Unfortunately, these figures are pretty unimpressive for neckband style of Bluetooth earphones. The new OnePlus Bullets Wireless Z, for example, last for 20 hours on a single charge. The LDAC battery life is especially disheartening and I found myself constantly having to charge the earphones when using with an Android phone. It’s easily the biggest downside of these earphones.
The good thing is that the battery takes only about an hour to charge completely.
Conclusion
Some of you may be aware of Oppo’s audio division, which operated independently and is world-renowned for making high-quality equipment like DVD and Blu-ray players, amplifiers, and headphones. While no longer operational, it seems this division has imbibed the Enco M31 with some of its audiophile magic. Simply put, these are one of the best sounding Bluetooth earphones on the market and you will have to spend several times their price to get anything better.
Sound quality aside, the Enco M31 do feel like a budget pair of earphones. The build quality is unremarkable, the position of the controls on the neckband is annoying, the mic doesn’t sound good, and the battery life is disappointing. It’s clear that some corners had to be cut and while the audio quality does far exceed the sticker price, the product as a whole is by no means premium.
Still, every time I listen to them, I feel like I ripped off Oppo. There’s no way these things sound as good as they do while costing only INR 1999. There has to be a catch somewhere and I waited several weeks to find it before I sat down to write this review but it never came. Yes, the battery life isn’t great but I’d rather have something I enjoy listening to and have to charge often than something that lasts for ages but doesn’t sound good.
The Oppo Enco M31 is a fantastic deal if all you care about is audio quality. That might not be a priority for everyone, so there’s still a case to be made for something like the OnePlus Bullets Wireless Z, which were my previous pick for budget wireless earphones (shoutout in the comments if you want to see a comparison with those). But if sound quality is a priority for you, the Oppo Enco M31 is your best option.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go charge them again.
Pros
Excellent sound quality
Comfortable
IPX5 rating
Incredibly well-priced
Cons
Unimpressive battery life with LDAC
Mediocre microphone
Inconveniently placed controls
