Mankind has used intelligence for centuries for internal control, economic progress and external influence. Intelligence can be open or secret. The first recorded secret intelligence operation was in 13th Century BCE when God ordered Moses to dispatch 12 tribal chiefs to search for the land of Canaan, their promised land. This was recorded in the Book of Numbers, the fourth book of the Hebrew Bible.
Moses asked them to report on the geographical features, composition of the population, agriculture potential, actual crops, forestry conditions and their administrative structure.This is equivalent to modern economic intelligence.A Canaanite woman named Rahab facilitated the secret entry of these Israelites into Canaan. In intelligence parlance, this would be equivalent to a mole in a foreign land.
Since 1998 I have been publishing columns on security, intelligence and terrorism in mainstream newspapers. In 2014, Indus Books published my first book National Security and Intelligence Management-A New Paradigm. My object in writing on intelligence was to “demystify” that subject to make the broad contours of the “intelligence process” known to the public and media.
This is because there is a mistaken impression that intelligence being a secret activity, should be hidden from “outsiders” meaning non-officials. Our intelligence services and political leadership are also partly responsible for this situation by needless secrecy even on non- sensitive subjects. This, in my view, allows them to evade accountability. That is the reason why some governments do not want to enquire into intelligence failures leading to avoidable deaths and breach of national security.
On the other hand,we need to realize that every government spends huge amountsof tax payers’ money on intelligencecollection. Intelligence failures cause national disasters like the 1941 Pearl Harbour attack, 9/11, 1999 Kargil incursions, 26/11 attacks, 2019 Pulwama attack and 2020 Galwan incursion.
I was a member of the 2 man “High Level” enquiry committee appointed by the Government of Maharashtra to enquire into the police response to the 26/11 terror attack on Mumbai. We were asked to enquire whether prior intelligence reports were received, action taken on that and whether the police action was adequate.
Our enquiries found that the common mistake which had happened in all the above incidents had occurred in 26/11 too. There was intelligence but none to coordinate, interpret and putting it into preventive action.
This particular point was mentioned by me in my first book, but I felt that a more researched book was necessary to educate the public, security personnel, policemen and media about the complexities of intelligence management. My forthcoming book Intelligence Over Centuries: From Canaan(13th Century BC) to Galwan(21st Century) -Achievements and Failures will address this.
In this I have historically analysed how intelligence was handled by different governments, the difference between open and secret intelligence and how very often “Open Source Intelligence”(OSI) was neglectedby many. I have also drawn the lessons from our own ancient books, the Arthashastra in the 4th – 3rd Century BCE and Thirukkural of 2nd Century BCE to show how our ancient wisdom is still relevant in the modern age.

Dr. Bharat Vatwani's journey from Borivali to Karjat to Manila...
The Ramon Magsaysay award, also called Asia's Nobel Prize, was established in 1957, in memory of the late Filipino president, Ramon del Fierro Magsaysay.
Ramon Magsaysay served as Philippines' president only for 3.5 years from December, 1953 to March, 1957, when he died in a plane crash. But his tenure was widely regarded as the golden period of Philippines history, underlining his "integrity in governance, courageous service to the people, and pragmatic idealism within a democratic society".
When he died, a New York based trust - The Rockefeller Brothers Fund - set up the Ramon Magsaysay award, with the concurrence of the Filipino government, recognizing outstanding Asians in the fields of government service, public service, community leadership, emergent leadership, journalism and arts, peace and international understanding.
The awards ceremony happens every year on 31st August, his birthday, in Manila. Winners are given a gold medallion and a cash prize of USD 30000.
In 2018, two Indians won this award. One of them was a Mumbai based doctor called Bharat Vatwani, who began his long and inspiring journey in 1988, when he saw a young man drinking water from a gutter. Therein lies a story!
Bharat Vatwani grew up in Mumbai. Having lost his father when he was 12 years old, he took up odd jobs to become a self-supporting student and did his MBBS from Grant Medical College, Mumbai, in 1982. In 1986, he completed his MD in Psychiatry from G S Medical College and Hospital, Mumbai. He married Smitha, another psychiatrist, and they started their private practice in Borivali.
One day, he and his wife were dining in a restaurant, when they saw an unkempt young man, drinking water from a gutter. They took him to their clinic, washed him, cleaned him and recognized signs of mental illness. They learnt he was a BSc graduate from Andhra Pradesh. They treated him and then reunited him with his family.
One thing led to another and Shraddha Rehabilitation Foundation was born, with the purpose of rescuing mentally ill, street people (people with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression), providing them free shelter and psychiatric treatment, and reuniting them with their families. They started small - with a two-room set up that could take three patients at best.
Later, the couple found and treated a well-known professor from Sir JJ School of Art, who was wandering on Mumbai roads for over two years, because of schizophrenia. This triggered an overwhelming response from art students, who organised a fund-raiser art exhibition for Dr Vatwani’s cause. 141 artists from India and abroad participated and raised USD 22,357. This enabled them to expand to a 20-bed facility in 1996.
As they continued their selfless work, private donors, volunteers and social workers came into their lives. In 2006, they moved into a 120-patient facility, on a 6.5 acre land in Karjat, 60 km away from Mumbai. Today, Shraddha has 20 social workers, 8 nurses and 3 doctors other than Dr. Vatwani and his wife. Since its inception in 1988, Shraddha Foundation has rescued more than 7000 mentally ill, roadside destitute, with a phenomenal reunion rate of 95%.
Shraddha Foundation works on three pillars - Rescue, Treatment and Reunion.
Shraddha Rehabilitation Foundation is unique because it actively seeks mentally ill people on the streets. Every month, it gets about 100 referral calls from locals, policemen and mental health institutes, about someone in their area who needs help. The foundation's workers ask the caller for a photograph and despatch a team of 3-4 people in an ambulance. The rescue operation has to be done with a lot of sensitivity. Stones get thrown, abuses get hurled, injuries are sustained. Sometimes it takes an hour or more for the rescue operation to conclude. Rescue workers make it a point never to bind and tie any body up. But in rare occasions, a mild sedative is given.
Sometimes, the 120-bed facility is less than full. The foundation's workers comb the streets of Mumbai, Pune and surrounding areas, in search of anyone who needs rescuing. The social workers identify mentally ill people by physical signs like overgrown hair, unclipped nails and unwashed and soiled clothes, as well as psychiatric manifestations like talking and laughing to oneself, hitting oneself, incomprehensible gesturing and refusal to respond.
The rescued patients are brought to the Karjat facility for the next step - Treatment.
The Karjat campus has a large administrative building that is called the Central Unit that also houses a ward for patients. There are two more buildings with male wards and female wards, a meditation center, plots of land where rice and vegetables are grown, and a cattle-shed with Gir cows. Patients wear yellow T-shirts, printed with the word ‘Shraddha’ and the symbols of five religions. Thee campus could be mistaken for a yoga camp.
The moment of truth is Reunion. As patients recover, they become homesick and many of them recall the addresses of their homes. Sometimes, they recall just the name of a village, district or nearest police station. Sometimes, their details can be matched with the information in the police’s list of missing persons.
Once Dr. Vatwani certifies that a patient has recovered, the foundation books train tickets for the patient and an accompanying social worker to the railway station nearest to the patient’s home.
Every patient needs to continue taking Dr Vatwani’s prescribed course of psychiatric medication for at least two years after he is discharged. For those who cannot afford or cannot access these drugs, Shraddha sends a month’s course by post, tailoring the dosage according to any side-effects reported by the patient or his family.
From rescue to reunion, the entire process is free for the patient, sustained by the Vatwanis’ private practice and by donations!!!
Post-script:
In 2016, a 25-year-old man from Nanded, Maharashtra, stepped inside his home two months after he had suddenly disappeared. A garlanded picture of him hung on the wall. As soon as he entered the house, a commotion broke out. His elderly parents began crying with joy. His young wife began thanking the lord loudly. She rushed indoors amid the chaos and came back dressed in her brightest sari. She had put her bindi and mangalsutra back on.
Dr. Bharat Vatwani has created a similar impact in 6500 plus families across India! Hence the Ramon Magsaysay award!!

Men Apart Every Man An Emperor.
The National Defence Academy (NDA) is the Joint Services academy of the Indian Armed Forces, where cadets of the three services, the Army, the Navy and the Air Force train together before they go on to pre-commissioning training in their respective service academies. The NDA is located at Khadakwasla near Pune, Maharashtra. It is the first tri-service academy in the world.
NDA alumni have led and fought in every major conflict in which the Indian Armed Forces has been called to action since the academy was established. The alumni include 3 Param Vir Chakra recipients and 9 Ashoka Chakra recipients. National Defence Academy has produced 27 service Chiefs Of Staff till date. Current Chiefs Of Staff of the Army, the Navy and the Air Force are all NDA alumni.
History
Sudan Block of the National Defence Academy
In 1941, Lord Linlithgow, then Viceroy of India received a gift of £100,000 from a grateful Sudanese Government towards building a war memorial in recognition of the sacrifices of Indian troops in the liberation of Sudan in the East African Campaign during World War II. At the end of the war, Field Marshal Claude Auchinleck, then Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, drawing on experiences of the army during the war, led a committee to study various military academies around the world and submitted a report to the Government of India in Dec. 1946. The committee recommended the establishment of a Joint Services Military Academy, with training modelled on the United States Military Academy at West Point.[3]
After the independence of India in Aug. 1947, the Chiefs of Staff Committee immediately implemented the recommendations of the Auchinleck report. The committee initiated an action plan in late 1947 to commission a permanent defence academy and began the search for a suitable site. It also decided to set up an interim training academy, known as the Joint Services Wing (JSW), which was commissioned on 1 Jan. 1949 at the Armed Forces Academy (now known as the Indian Military Academy) in Dehradun. Initially, after two years of training at the JSW, Army cadets went on to the Military wing of the AFA for two years of further pre-commission training, while the Navy and Air Force cadets were sent to Dartmouth and Cranwell in the United Kingdom for further training.
Following partition, India's share of the monetary gift received from Sudan, amounted to £70,000 (the remaining £30,000 went to Pakistan). The Indian Army decided to use these funds to partly cover the cost of construction of the NDA. The foundation stone for the academy was laid by then Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru on 6 Oct. 1949. The National Defence Academy was formally commissioned on 7 Dec. 1954, with an inauguration ceremony held on 16 Jan. 1955.[4] The JSW program was transferred from the IMA to the NDA.

The NDA campus is located about 17 km south-west of Pune city, north-west of Khadakwasla Lake. It spans 7,015 acres (28.39 km2) of the 8,022 acres (32.46 km2) donated by the Government of the former Bombay State. The site was chosen for being on a lake shore, the suitability of the neighboring hilly terrain, proximity to the Arabian Sea and other military establishments, an operational air base nearby at Lohegaon as well as the salubrious climate. The existence of an old combined-forces training centre and a disused mock landing ship, HMS Angostura, on the north bank of the Khadakwasla lake which had been used to train troops for amphibious landings, lent additional leverage for the selection of the site.[3] Aptly, NDA is also located in the hunting grounds of the legendary Shivaji, with the Sinhagad Fort as a panoramic backdrop.
The administrative headquarters of the NDA was named the Sudan Block, in honour of the sacrifices of Indian soldiers in the Sudan theatre during the East African Campaign. It was inaugurated by then Ambassador of Sudan to India, Rahmatullah Abdulla, on 30 May 1959. The building is a 3-storey basalt and granite structure constructed with Jodhpur red sandstone. Its architecture features an exterior design comprising a blend of arches, pillars and verandahs, topped by a dome. The foyer has white Italian marble flooring and panelling on the interior walls. On the walls of the foyer hang the portraits of NDA graduates who have been honored with the highest gallantry awards, the Param Vir Chakra or the Ashoka Chakra.
A number of war relics adorn the NDA campus, including legendary captured tanks and aircraft.[8] The Vyas Library offers an extensive collection of over 100,000 printed volumes, in addition to numerous electronic subscriptions and a number of periodicals and journals from around the world in at least 10 languages.
Admission

Applicants to the NDA are selected via a written exam conducted by the UPSC, followed by extensive interviews by the SSB covering general aptitude, psychological testing, team skills as well as physical and social skills, along with medical tests. Incoming classes are accepted twice a year for semesters starting in July and January. About 4,50,000 applicants sit for each written exam. Typically, about 6,300 of these are invited to interview. Only unmarried male candidates are eligible for NDA & NA Examination. The minimum age should be 16 and half years and maximum age should be 19 and half years. Applicants to join the Air Force also go through a Pilot Aptitude Battery Test. About 320 cadets are accepted to the academy each semester. About 70 cadets are accepted for the Air Force, 42 for the Navy and 208 for the Army.
Cadets who are accepted and successfully complete the program are sent to their respective training academies for one year of training before granting of commission: army cadets go to IMA at Dehradun, Air Force cadets to AFA at Dundigal, Hyderabad, and naval cadets to INA, Ezhimala, Kerala. A cadet can only decline a commission in case of a serious permanent medical condition caused during the program.

The journey of my parents
A man who loves watching movies after bunking school, a man who after a busy day wants to relax alone by watching movies are some of the rarest qualities of my dad.apart from that a very short temper man who got angry on very tiny things were other few things about my dad.My dad loves to travel and visit new places. He dont like to sit at home.
My dad was born at pulgaon in a middle class army family of 6 siblings 2 brother and 4 sisters. He grew up in Durg.My dad is the 4th one having 2 little sister than him.His DAD means my grandfather was the strict one and my Dadi (grandma) was the rescuer for my dad.
In his initial years he was a child who was not so keen in studies though he did his ITI, but his passion was on the art in which he is still a pro.
When he grew up he was a normal guy who has no vision in his life.he was pretty cool and easy I guess in watching movies and enjoying life.
Like all Indian in those days says and do,"Iski shaadi kara do sudhur jaega"
The same things happened and my mom gets entry in the life of my dad.
My mom is a cool and calm lady she is very soft spoken and a very understanding lady..In short just opposite to my Dad.
My dad was lucky enough to get such a wife who stood by him in every thick and thin of the situations.
By now you might be thinking I have not uttered a single good quality about my father, then what made me write this blog.
Here is a real story or we could call a real struggle of my dad.
My grand parents opened him a cycle repairing shop and purchased some rickshaw for renting it and this was his 1st job which he was doing at the time of marriage. After few months it dint work out he closed that shop and moved to Hyderabad. Based on his ITI he got some job in Hyderabad where he stayed for few months and had a great time as told by both my mom and dad. They use to go movies and visit different places of Hyderabad. Then again he came back to to Durg for no reason leaving job from Hyderabad.
He stayed few days in Durg and one fine day he thought of leaving Durg as well due to some family issues and his angry nature. he left Durg and shifted to Tumsar (a village at maharashtra) with wife and 2 sons me and my elder brother.
He moved to Tumsar started a TV repairing shop. He was good in his work as I have also learnt repairing most of the things from him.But problem with him was that he was kind hearted or he dint have the business blood in him. He could not charge properly. For example When he repaired a TV it would have costed him 5 rs to replace the parts and 30 rs of effort and balance 15 rs of profit.
But his conscience did not permit him to charge 50 rs from the customer rather he charged rs 20 only ignoring his effort.while the others might be charging 100 bucks for that.some how things were going well. Along with TV repairing shop my mom also opened a shop at the home to support my dad. at that time I was probably 2 and my brother was 4.we were somehow surving at that place.
After few months my grandfather came to visit us.He requested my mother to convince my dad to come back to Durg.
Finally my dad agrees to this and we again came back to Durg.
You people must be thinking how random we both came in the world without even a intro on the beginning. This is how it was actually.
To be very frank all the above fact are those that I have heard of about my dad
Here comes my version of my dad which I have seen and now narrating.
As we return to Durg( as we return to india in present scenario lol)my grand father gifted us a house worth 35K it was huge at that time , I am talking about 1989.It was a hall and a kitchen with little open space.
We started with a idli machine were by people come up with the soaked rice and dal for grinding it for preparing idli.
Dad was looking for the new opportunities as TV repairing was out of question as he could not charge properly and moreover my bade papa(his elder brother ) was pro in that. Few day later a lady came to our house for grinding that idli paste seeing my mother she asked her " Is this sufficient to survive " my mom replied No, we are looking for some opportunities.
Then that lady told "my husband is a bank manager ,meet him once "
They both visited the manager and he agrees to give him a loan to purchase flour mill. The formality in those days were huge ,I still remember my mom use to cook a idli for us in the morning and lock us in the room and they both went knocking office to office for complying with the loan and machine installation formalities . That was the real struggle.
You people might have seen a show called "office office " where the muasddilal has to go office to office for getting his work done .the same thing has been experienced by us. Though the manager was kind to us but he also need to comply with the procedures.
Finally we got the flour mill and it was named after my mother "Chandrika atta chakki"
Things started for us. We repayed the loan took a second loan for the expansion of the business and purchased further two machines spices and Big grinding machines.
All this things were installed in the same house that my grandpa gifted us.
The hall turned out to be a shop. A open space was converted into a room were mom dad use to sleep in the night and we sleep at the hall(shop) at the night.
At the same time we were also getting older and mom dad had the ambition that they dont want to see there children suffer when they grew old. So they decided to get them the best possible education for them. They get us enroll in one of the best school of Durg ie in vishwadeep sr sec school.
The fees of that school was huge for us.they could have easily get us educated in a government school and led a normal life but they choose struggle from them and peaceful life for us in our future.
Emotions apart , we were getting old and the house was also small for us.then my mom decided that she want a room for there children, convince my dad to built a 1st floor though they were having no money.but my dad agreed.
My Nanaji who was a real gentleman a retired govt employee helped us so many times with money and moral support helped again for the construction and in the due course of that, many others helped us with loan to built a house. Two new rooms added in the first floor.
By this time I was in 6th and my brother was in 10th
Flour mill was not sufficient now,as school fees were rising and we were also growing faster.
They decided to start a addon business a vegetable shop along with flour mill.
Serving Tiffins to student was already in place for extra income.
Vegetable shop was running good but that turn out to be tedious job for my dad as he alone was responsible for getting vegetables from the market in the early morning .it was running well few months untill my dad got sick.
After that a new Avenue was explored opening a shop with name "Sunday ke sunday"name sounds good na. Exactly it was a shop which only operates on Sunday to Sunday where we use to sell samosa,dosa jalebi and dhokla. I was the marketing guy for that, visiting houses to houses and getting the order and delivering them as per the order. We have explored swiggy and zomato 25 years back ..🤭🤭
That also worked well until my dad again got sick. All this work require so much effort.and it is needless to say that my mom was there to support.
My mother was the one who can operate all the machines that we were having in our shop infact she was the reason for the success of that shop as she was the one looking after the day time business when dad use to go market and afternoon was taken care by both of them.
They tried other businesses like gupchup shop(I was the gupchup wala), milk packet selling,canteen services and renting the one of the rooms of 1st floor to students along with food to support our studies.
Just a addition we both brothers were good in studies my brother was intelligent in the family and that might be the driving force for my parents to work hard.
In mean time I have also started taking tutions. And my brother after his graduation started a job at ICICI bank home loans.
Suddenly one day my brother came to my father with worried face and told him that he want to pursue MBA and that too from good college of metro city. He had no plan whatsoever how he is going to do that. The reply given by my dad was go ahead I have a house I will mortgage this to some bank for you. You just work hard rest I will see.
Ultimately he got the good Mark's and managed to get the good college as well.
Another struggle was to manage to get the loan and that too a loan for everything -college fees,hostel fees and mess fees as we were not in the position to manage all that at that point of time.
My dad and brother went bank to bank asking for the loan,most of the bank rejected stating we don't give education loan on mortgage or you dont have a proper guarantee to give. Still they dint loss hope they tried every possible bank and finally a bank called United western bank now taken over by IDBI bank agreed to lend us a loan based on the property. The word said by that bank manager to my brother was that " I am not lending you loan based on your Mark's ,its because of your father I am giving you the loan"
It is worth while to remember those neighbour who helped us with money in those time .every body were so inspired with my parents that what sort of people they are. they are working so hard to make their children's future bright.No negihbour knew us but still they have given us money seeing our parents enthusiasm.
Meanwhile bank gave the 1st installment under the condition that we need to pay the regular interest for the year upon which 2nd installment would be released. I was still taking tution at that time and somehow we managed that year.
2nd year onwords my brother also started working and things smoothen .
He got the campus placement at Earnst & Young where he worked for a year then he managed to get in to Bank ,worked their for a while and then switching and switching and presently settled in singapore.
My detailed story will follow in my next blog ,Breifly I joined CA cleared foundation and inter in the 1st attempt ,in the meantime a government job opprtuinty knocked thanks to my dad he persuaded me literally persuaded me to apply as I was pretty sure that next year I will be CA and every thing will be fine thereafter. But destiny has something else for me luckily my written got cleared and then interview and here I am presently working in a public sector undertaking.I am company secretary and MBA.
Presently my parents are happily retired and are covering whole India which they lost in their early days. They are staying in a 3Bhk house with a car in their parking and love and affection of their children.
This lines are for my father...

But he Never Failed to try and he Succeeded finally.
By the time I am writing this blog my Mom Dad are enjoying there stay in Singapore with smhis elder son,daughter in law and a cute mahi grand child.

This is true for all industries. IIJS was very poor and even the IJW held in September was not great either. As the domestic gold market is at a discount to the landed cost of gold, imports are very poor. There is abundant scrap gold coming into the market due to the high price of gold overseas. Demand for gold has gone below pre demonetization levels. This is further accentuated due to the weak rupee as it makes the local gold price higher. Demand could return to a certain extent only if gold prices stabilises in rupee terms. Previously, unofficial gold would have bridged the gap in supply. Moreover, scrap gold is much cheaper than smuggled gold. However, for the gold dealers, jewellers, refiners, etc. who are registered under GST, unofficial gold is no longer an option. The high price has also seen gold with NBFCs enter the market.

Growing By Leaps And Bounds
From a start-up with a negative bank balance to a turnover of more than Rs. 20 crores, life has truly been a roller-coaster ride for Shreyansh Jain. Eldest son of the family and the child of academicians Professor Dr. B.C. Jain and mother Professor Dr. Sunita Jain, Shreyansh Jain did his schooling from Balaghat, which was great as far as extra-curricular activities were concerned but in terms of academics, the school was far from satisfactory.
As he puts it, “A small town has multiple disadvantages, but by the time people understand the shortcomings, it is too late.” It is ironical that while his own education suffered in this small town, his father taught mechanical engineering to the students of Gondia Engineering College in Maharashtra.
Shreyansh spent his early childhood days with his grandparents in Kurud, who happened to be agriculturists.
The Turnaround
Shreyansh says going to Kota for coaching proved to be the best decision of his life. It taught him the value of discipline and motivated him to plunge headlong into fierce competition. The taste of success was heady and had him hooked for good. He says, “I just wanted to keep moving and creating new milestones in my journey.” Soon, he walked through the hallowed aisles of IIT-Mumbai to become a scientist.
The Grim Reality
The students and the environment at IIT-Mumbai were very different from what he had imagined it would be. No one depended on the system to realize their dream. Shreyansh, too, decided to take the matters in his own hands and changed his career course within four months of joining IIT.
The thought of tens of thousands of students wasting their time at schools, without the right mentoring and quality education compelled him to take steps to correct the situation.
“I wanted to serve students in the most conscientious way and to do so I invited the top IITians to join hands and share their experience, expertise and unique methods for my series of ‘Mentoring Booklets’”, reveals Shreyansh.
Turning Vision Into Reality
Nothing could dampen the spirits of the 17-year-old who wanted to open his company in spite of Indian laws disallowing it, due to age bar. His cousin joined hands with him and that’s how his first company Educell came into existence.
Reminisces Shreyansh, “The decision to get into education business was taken care by considering all the statistics and data available – 25 percent IITians join financial firms, 20-25 percent get into marketing, 20 percent into consulting, 20 percent into applied engineering and 5-7 percent get into core engineering. These calculations showed us opportunities in entrepreneurship in the education sector. We realized that India has only a few premiere institutes and students of small towns are unable to reach them due to lack of proper mentoring.”
Through his series of books, his company minted great revenue in a very short span and Sjain series, which unveiled the strategies followed by top IITians, became an overnight success. A year later, Shreyansh opened a company called QEA Eduventure Private Limited.
The new firm started reaping rich dividends and his bank balance started swelling. Driven by the desire to excel in life, he diversified his business to launch DMS Infosystems Pvt. Ltd. at the age of 19 and then his media firm, Next Generation Media (NGM).
Transcending Barriers
The family, understandably, was not happy with Shreyansh choice to earn while he was studying. His father completed a Ph.D. from IIT-Mumbai while his son was pursuing graduation, but he was far from supportive. Some of the partnerships, despite doing well in revenues, proved to disempower, so he has to start all over again with heavy liabilities.
Soon came the challenge of managing several companies and maintaining their divested non-core assets while restructuring the debt, simultaneously raising fresh capital from financial institutions, running the business, both as a CEO and shareholder, continuing to create values for all stakeholders, while also keeping all teams satisfied, engaged and motivated all the time.

Remembering Sunil Dutt on his 13th death anniversary. Sunil Dutt (6 June 1930 – 25 May 2005), born Balraj Dutt, was a movie actor, producer, director and politician. He was the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports in the Manmohan Singh government (2004–2005). His son, Sanjay Dutt, is also an actor, while daughter Priya Dutt, a former Member of Parliament. In 1968, he was honoured with the Padma Shri by the Government of India. In 1984 he joined the Indian National Congress party and was elected to Parliament of India for five terms from the constituency of Mumbai North West. Starting out in radio, Sunil Dutt was hugely popular on the Hindi service of Radio Ceylon, the oldest radio station in South Asia. He moved to acting in Hindi films and got introduced to the industry with 1955's Railway Platform. He shot to stardom in the 1957 film Mother India where he co-starred with Nargis, whom he married on 11 March 1958. Dutt played a short-tempered, angry son of Nargis. During the making of this film a fire happened on the sets. It is believed that Dutt braved the raging fire to save Nargis and thereby won her love. He had one son Sanjay Dutt, also a successful film actor and two daughters, Priya Dutt and Namrata Dutt. His daughter Namrata married Kumar Gaurav, son of Rajendra Kumar. The two fathers were co-stars in Mother India. Dutt was one of the major stars of Hindi cinema in the late 1950s and 1960s and continued to star in many successful films which included Sadhna (1958), Sujata (1959), Mujhe Jeene Do (1963), Khandan (1965) and Padosan (1967). His collaboration with B.R. Chopra proved to be successful in films such as Gumraah (1963), Waqt (1965) and Hamraaz (1967). One of his favourite writers and friends was Aghajani Kashmeri. Dutt created a record of sorts by directing and starring in the unique film Yaadein (1964) in which he was the only actor. He later turned producer of the 1968 film Man Ka Meet which introduced his brother Som Dutt who was unsuccessful in films. In 1971 he produced, directed and starred in the big-budget period romantic film Reshma Aur Shera (1971) which was a huge failure at the box office. He continued to star in hits that included Heera (1973), Pran Jaye Par Vachan Na Jaye (1974), Nagin (1976) andJaani Dushman (1979). He also starred in a series of Punjabi religious movies in the 1970s: Man Jeete Jag Jeet (1973), Dukh Bhanjan Tera Naam (1974), and Sat Sri Akal (1977). He launched his son Sanjay's career with Rocky in 1981 which was a success. Shortly before the film's release, Dutt's wife died of pancreatic cancer. He founded the Nargis Dutt Foundation in her memory for the cure of cancer patients. He was a sponsor of the India Project, an organisation akin to Operation Smile for the treatment of Indian children with facial deformities. In 1982 he was appointed as the Sheriff of Mumbai, an apolitical titular position bestowed on him by the Maharashtra government for a year. He turned character actor in the 1980s often playing an elderly police officer or patriarch at the centre of family feuds. He retired from the film industry in the early 1990s to turn to politics after his last few releases including Yash Chopra's Parampara (1992) and J.P.Dutta's Kshatriya (1993). His political career was halted for some years in the early 1990s when he worked to free his son from jail after he was arrested for keeping an AK-56, a Pistol and hand grenades that he claimed was for protection of his family after bomb blasts in Mumbai. In 1995 he won the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the film industry for four decades. He returned to films shortly before his death in 2003's Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. He shared the screen with son Sanjay for the first time although they had appeared earlier in Rocky (1981) and Kshatriya (1993).
