Wow. San O back in the day. I always laid out near this group when I was there - they were always having fun. And they were there…pretty much every time I ever went. 

This is what the Department of Parks and Rec in California spent over $40,000 dollars of tax payer money to make sure wouldn’t happen at San O anymore. This is what they pursued in the courts, through loss and an appeal. This is what they stationed Ranger / Cops on the cliffs to stake out and eradicate. This is what they ticketed and used trucks to race down the beach to intimidate and to erase. 

This. Some folks and some dogs who loved to sunbathe nude, surf nude, play nude sports, bbq, drink some drinks (oh that’s illegal too), hang out as a community together at the edge of the world, by the sea, in the sun.

(For the record: You can still go nude at San Onofre if you trespass on the Camp Pendleton marine base next door to the old nude beach at Trail 6. You will always find nudists there. But it is not a real beach anymore, and not a community. That’s what we need back.)

The sixteenth-century maxim, ultra aequinoxialem non peccari – “south of the equinoctial line, one does not sin” – expresses more than a division between vice in the South and virtue in the North. It expresses a system of spatial location that, starting from the Tropic of Cancer, demarcates two distinct worlds: one in the North, based on the European Law of Nations that regulates the exercise of violence and relations between the nascent territorial States; another in the South, not subject to this Law, open to the exercise of violence by European States in the conquest of land in the New World.  This is a process of domination that contractualists would later rationalize through a new cleavage: non-contractual societies south of the Tropic of Cancer; contractual societies north of the Tropic of Cancer. This new cleavage resulted in the understanding of the peoples of the South living in a situation of anarchy in the state of nature. Since in such a situation the only possible form of order is that derived from the use of force, the European colonizing states found themselves authorized to resort to it in the conquest and domination of the local ethnic groups of the so-called New World. After the last European colonial enterprise in the last quarter of the 19th century, known as the partition of Africa, there were no more free lands to conquer and the idea of ​​anarchy and a state of nature gradually extended to all international interactions.
