20 Question Fic Writer Tag
shamelessly stolen
1.) How many works do you have on ao3?
30… somehow I published 27 fics this year yikes. And there will be more
2.) What's your ao3 word count?
216,689; 167,675 written this year
3.) What fandoms do you write for?
Star Wars, almost exclusively. Hoping to finish my one Marvel WIP but all the others on my hard drive will probably remain in the graveyard. Might get around to some HP stuff again at some point
4.) What are your top five fics by kudos?
An Unorthodox Courtship, won't stop to surrender, the thrill of the fall, you can't just leave me, will you give in to me? (not counting my Marvel WIP whoops)
5.) Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I TRY but damn I’m bad at it
6.) What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Maybe monsters begetting monsters? Or please and thank you. There’s a real pattern I have for hurting Obi-Wan. Special mention to always for it being angst-y in a non Dead Dove way.
7.) What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
An Unorthodox Courtship, hands down. There’s no Palpatine, no more war, they’re together, they’re allowed to be together, and they’re happy and expecting babies. Everything is beautiful and nothing hurts
8.) Do you get hate on fics?
Shockingly, no. I’m extremely surprised, given some of the things I've written.
9.) Do you write smut? If so what kind?
A million flavors of M/M. And like one F/M but it was incest so that tracks.
10.) Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
Only one! I wrote a Marvel/Star Trek crossover in a haze on my phone (and I Never write on my phone) when I went to see Batman v. Superman in theatres. Strange time for inspiration to hit, but what can you do?
11.) Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Nope
12.) Have you ever had a fic translated?
No
13.) Have you ever cowritten a fic before?
Not really. It might be interesting to try some day!
14.) What's your all time favorite ship?
Of ALL time? That’s a difficult question. I’d have to say Kirk/Spock because that’s one I can keep coming back to years later. My tastes in media and shipping might have changed, but K/S is eternal.
15.) What's a WIP you'd like to finish, but doubt you ever will?
:( too many. There’s one Marvel fic that was a behemoth with 30k words written, which was maybe 5-10% of the outline. I fucking loved it. Time travel, Tony angst, Bucky was Tony’s PA for some reason… Unfortunately I fell out of love with the fandom, and, well. The summary was “In the year 2023, most of the superheroes of the universe have been deleted from existence and the rest gather to use time travel as a last resort to save reality”, which ended up being the plot of Endgame, so that killed the rest of my drive to write it.
16.) What are your writing strengths?
I can write a lot of words. Now, are they good words? *shrug*
17.) What are your writing weaknesses?
I don’t know how to objectively analyze my own writing, and I don’t know how to ask for con crit.
18.) Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I do it and I probably shouldn’t. It’s easier for readers to not have to deal with the translations, but I can’t help myself sometimes
19.) First fandom you wrote for?
Oh fuck wrote and put online? I can’t remember what drivel I put on deviantART back in middle school, but I do remember writing on the Assassin’s Creed Kink Meme when that was a thing, so that might be it. Warrior Cats might be a safe assumption otherwise.
20.) Favorite fic you've ever written?
PROCEED WITH CAUTION because I had fun writing it start to finish, and it’s probably the least serious fic I’ll ever be able to write because I am TERRIBLE at it

Hi Class, Welcome to my tumblr. Sayang data, oras at pasensya. Wala na rin ibang laman ito after all kung hindi mga ka-dramahan ko nung ako’y mas bata pa.
Each batch that I’ve had graduate since the time I started teaching were special in its own way.
The first batch was special because it was my first. Naririnig ko na si Arone humirit ng “You never forget your first.” chos.
The second batch, eto sina Kuya Richmond niyo, they were special because they were my first students.
You guys are the third, and  you are special in your own right, dahil kayo ang aking unang mga students from 1st to 4th year. Ako gumawa ng program ninyo sa best na makakaya ko kahit noob pa ako noon sa trabahong program head, pero I tried to mold your experience to what I experienced as an undergraduate in Psychology, with slight improvements of course. K-12 palang eh, tas nag pandemic pa, yet here you all are here today, surviving, about to graduate, and I couldn’t be more proud.
Two things I want to leave with you as my last lesson as a teacher, though perhaps not as a friend.
1. I want to apologize for all my shortcomings as a professor and head.  Lahat tayo were thrust into an unfamiliar situation with the Pandemic, and I gave it my best. I tried to help everyone to the best I can, in terms of counsel, advice, or trying to teach the best I could. I gave it my best, but I know I could’ve done better if we were in a better situation. I wanted to leave you guys with memories that college life was hard, but it was fulfilling.
2. As you take your first step to become full fledged Psychology professionals, always remember that you now carry the banner of the school and our profession. If we want people to understand us, remember that we have to do more work to understand them because we are burdened with the privilege of knowledge. Tayo ang may alam, tayo ang dapat marunong umintindi, so ingatan natin ang image natin. Remember you can be empathetic but FIRM in your principles. Its simply about finding the proper way or path to express so that we can be understood.
Finally, Be brave, (Hindi FEU yan ha. BRAVO nga baste eh, hindi yung Biscuit) and be confident, I believe in all of you, pero balewala yung belief na iyon kung kayo mismo hindi naniniwala sa sarili ninyo. At the end of the day, what you make of your life; you answer only to two people, to yourself and to God. Not to your parents, not to me, not to your friends. Believe in yourself and your capabilities, but do not settle only for the potential you have. All our potentials, whether in life or love, cannot remain potential forever because reality will have to measure it.
Cherish the people you love and let them know as often as you can. Relying on others is not a weakness (Alam niyo yan, iba ang dependence disorders sa simpleng social-support seeking coping mechanisms. Pag hindi, babawiin ko grad niyo). Congratulations batch ‘22 SSCR BS PSYCHOLOGY

Senior High? DBTI!
Impormatibo
Good Christians and Upright Citizens! “
Tekstong Naratibo

Secret Radio | 7.24.21, 8.7.21 & etc.
Tumblr media
“Better, Better, Back” Secret Radio | 7.24.21, 8.7.21 & etc. | Hear it here.
- Mort Garson - “Plantasia”
1. Jean-Pierre Djeukam - “Africa Iyo” - “Cameroon Garage Funk”
The main musician I think of from Cameroon is Beti-Beti, and this is a whole different thing. Endless props to Analog Africa for providing fiery track after track. This is the sweat from their newest collection!
2. Eyedress - “Jealous”
Paige hears something in this and when I unfocus my eyes I do too. (Literal?) high school skate kids gettin in their shallow feels. I will admit that the chorus “time-time” is killer.
3. Nahid Akthar & Tafo - “Takra We Gutt Bhar Le” (I think)
Nahid Akthar’s voice is so completely bewitching that the amazing arrangements almost sneak by. Tafo is the producer of this track I believe, and the narrative structure of the music is just so confident and encompassing. But then also: man, that VOICE. She’s right up there with Ros Serey Sothea in expressiveness and character.
4. Oruã - “Escola das Roas” - “Sem Bênção / Sem Crença”
My thanks to you, Marc, for pointing this band to us. I have fallen in love with this particular recording, it just gets more thoroughly better with every listen. Calvin Johnson mentioned this band in a recent K newsletter — they’re a Brazilian band who corresponded with Doug Martsch as mutual fans until at some point Doug decided his own band needed replacing and he brought them out as Built to Spill and also as Oruã. This track also has shades of Sonic Youth’s “Master-Dik,” one of my all-time ultra faves. It really hits me in the ’90s, and I rilly want to see how some of this music is performed live.
5. Jacques Dutronc - “Le Responsable”
I’m so thankful to have Jacques Dutronc in my life. His rock songs knock me into gear like nothing else — and the whole band has its own very specific flavor. It kicks!
6. Sleepy Kitty - “Alceste in Silverlake”
At very long last, there is a new Sleepy Kitty album on the way! It’s in line at the record plant as I type this. And this is a song from the perspective of a musician-seeking drummer in LA, crossed with the most brutally honest man in all of France.
7. Sakuran Zensen - “錯乱前戦 ロッキンロール” (I Wanna Rock & Roll)
We only knew one song by this band (that we’ve played here) because the video was rad, but I looked to see what else was there and this song is just freakin great with me. The chords are really cool and his vocal delivery is just so over the top it’s impossible not to love. And the guitar solo is basically a full-on tonefest, which I appreciate more than a bunch of flying fingers. The video helps fill in the picture nicely too, I think, though I like the song while not looking at it even more.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPCqT3e89SU
- Mort Garson - “Concerto for Philodendron & Pothos”
All hail the French instinct for chamber music instruments as pop instruments, and then as a kind of technicolor weirdness. The orchestration of this song is a work of art in itself, and that doesn’t even account for her self-harmonizing melody. If you haven’t already, picture a brunette bob and deep mascara.
9. Public Service Broadcasting - “Spitfire”
I can’t remember now how I found this music, though I think it might’ve been from Josh’s playlist? This is from 2012, but they have a new album coming out almost exactly a month from now. In Bound Stems Tim and I got really into interlacing snatches of other people’s words into the music we were making, and this is very congruent with that interest. I feel like this song passes tests as it goes.
10. Shocking Blue - “Send Me a Postcard”
I first heard of this band when I was learning everything I could about Nirvana, and I’d heard both versions of “Love Buzz” and knew they were both great, but we only recently caught this track. It’s the bridge between “White Rabbit” and “Territorial Pissings.”
11. Metak - “Tetrapak”
Our favorite Croatian band! Everything about this song is delightful. I feel like if this song was in English I’d probably cringe at the lyrics, but in this format I can only hear how much fun the song is to play. I am one-quarter Croatian, which means I can’t understand any of the lyrics either but I do see little ghosts of myself in the pictures of the band somehow. It’s weird.
12. Katerine - “Louxor J’adore”
-Anything I could say about this song is eclipsed by this excerpt:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uD7QuV6f_MA
The performance to the cemetery knocks me out
13. Erkin Koray - “Seni Her Gördügümde”
Whenever we’re listening to Anatolian psych, the songs with the most creative ideas and satisfying riffs and great vocal passages are always Erkin Koray. The four-piece arrangements are so good, and then he doesn’t hesitate to step up with his guitar to narrate a passage. Also, I really like how Turkish rock sounds so Indian and also Arabic and also French.
14. WITCH - “Chifundo”
Zambian prog rock! I haven’t heard anything like this track anywhere else in Africa yet. The thing is, this version of prog includes the exact flavor that Yes totally lacks, and thus I really love listening to this track in a way most prog rock doesn’t hit me. The time switches and the lead part over the top are just so smooth!
15. Ezra Furman - “Psalm 151”
We’ve been listening to a lot of Ezra Furman’s music lately, and it’s only getting better and more engrossing with every listen. We toured with Ezra Furman’s band about 5 years ago and every night was a pleasure. Theyre finishing up a new album, which makes this a great time to listen to the others. This entire album, “Transangelic Exodus,” is a masterpiece as far as we’re concerned, and I find myself thinking the whole time too about Tim Sandusky’s production. Tim’s such a home town for us, and to hear his full attention on this album is just such a pleasure.
16. Ralph Stanley - “White Light, White Heat”
It was one of my favorite musical influence moments ever when my dad’s bluegrass band, The Prozac Mtn Boys, played VU’s “What Goes On.” Knowing that there is a recording of one of my dad’s true banjo heroes playing “White Light White Heat” is just an endless blessing. And actually hearing it is even better.
17. Kim Jung Mi - “Ganadaramabasa”
I know basically nothing about this track except that she’s Korean and this is from 1973. She’s got a real Diana Ross thing going on, and her band has a real Supremes vibe too… but it doesn’t sound like one of their songs.
18. Penny Penny - “Yogo Yogo”
We just got this record recently, and based on this track I wouldn’t’ve necessarily pictured the remarkable-looking guy who actually made this music. This is from the album “Shaka Bundu.” I’m sure it’s been cranked up and sent through some great house remixes — how could this not be? — but I like how this tempo operates at its own pace. It’s so truly and thoroughly ’80s, very 20th century. In the 21st century this tempo is practically cerebral.
19. Baris Manço - “Binboganin Kizi”
More Anatolian action. It’s really interesting to me how Turkish stuff was always associated with psych music but I didn’t really know how except for the opium thing, and I now understand that it’s in the chord relationships, well, and a lot of the vocal melody and delivery. In that way, Turkish rock pretty much defines what psych music sounds like. Wow. And check out that keyboard solo, so next level!
20. The Velvet Underground - “Countess from Hong Kong”
People are always asking Beatles or Stones and the answer is Velvet Underground. (And the Beatles, and the Stones.) They were just operating along a different balance beam than those other guys — performing different tricks for a different audience. While the Beatles were defining pop music, the VU were destroying it… but then later, they reveal their deep affinity for Western music, even as they never drop in to the blues-centric reading of it. It’s truly punk. I guess they are to punk what the Beatles are to pop — the definition of pop is whatever flows to or from the Beatles; punk is whatever flows to or from the Velvet Underground. Certainly more than any single band in 1976 or 7 or whatever.
21. Bella Bellow - “Denyigban”
The piano phrase that kicks this song off is surprisingly close to the opening of Bound Stems’ “Appreciation Night.” We got that phrase from the demo mode of Radz’s keyboard, and it’s surreal to hear a high-overlap version in a song from Togo. Her voice is so clean in tone and pitch, and what’s strangest to me is that I register the instrumentation in an almost Disney mode — but then realize that’s because Disney will draw on Caribbean and African elements at times as they establish characters and settings. Such an elegant song though!
22. Rail Band - “Mouodilo”
One of the first insights that got us into WBFF was the realization that James Brown had even more fundamental influence on the music of the world than the Beatles did — certainly in Africa. Hearing how his delivery interrelates with so many bands from all across Africa is such a revelation. This track just keeps winding around you til you can’t hardly live without it.
- Asha Bhosle - “Salma Jarir Jhalak”
All I know about this is that it’s in Bangla and it’s from a movie.
23. Unknown - “Chemirocha” - from “Love Is Love”
Several years ago, when African records looked interesting but we literally didn’t know anything about them, we bought a record called Love Is Love, in part because it was a beautiful cover and in part because the music seemed mysterious and full of possibility. Now, when I go to look for it online, I see no sign — I think it’s just a really small pressing from a… pirate group, I guess one could say? But really I think just hardcore music lovers. Anyway, it has this song “Chemirocha” on it, and there’s a story about this song that is really probably just best to link to because it’s so amazing. I guarantee you will find the information in this article worth your read:

24. Sparks - “Do-Re-Mi”
We’ve known about Sparks, but we’re late to a close listen. We’ve been listening a lot in anticipation of — not the band bio pic but “Annette,” the new film by Carax, one of our favorite directors ever. For that matter: make sure to watch “Holy Motors” by Carax. It’s probably best if you watch “Lovers on a Bridge” before that, but if you have to go straight to “Holy Motors,” dive right in. It’s amazing.
Meanwhile: This take on the Mary Poppins classic is TOO MUCH — I can’t stop smiling at the end, when the bells start tolling over the crashing drums and crescendoing vocal waves as their third finale fades away. How can anyone make this song, the very definition of not-rock, rock so fully?
- Mort Garson - “Ode to an African Violet”
25. Bob Reuter’s Alley Ghost - “She Brought Me to the Wire”
I will forever be glad that we not only landed in a city where we could find out about the person and the works of Bob Reuter, but that we got to know and work with him. Bob Reuter was one of the definitions of St. Louis to us, and when he passed, so did some of that city. But also, he left music and photos and stories in Eleven and chapbooks that I truly hope last forever. He was the hard-living romantic that you hope lives in the heart of every hard-luck case… and in his one instance, it was true. Bless your soul, Bob Reuter.

life lately
After months, I can finally say the famous line —hi, it's been a while! Well, I have been pretty busy and couldn't find time to write again (busy for me was laying all day haha). As you all know (or maybe not), I'm a second year accountancy student which have gone through qualifying examination for me to continue with the program. I only had a one week break after finals and decided to review right away for the eight major subjects I need to take. It's been a stressful month for me 'cause it's really hard to focus and just fight the urge to sleep. Given that there's so many distractions and all, I really had a hard time reviewing.
I used to wake up at 8 am, prepare our breakfast (sometimes, lol) and start at 9 am till 5 pm. But of course, schedule are just there and not followed most of the time hehe. During the entire month, I had this thought in my mind always —should I still continue?
I believe some of you were on the same stage as mine — not knowing what to do in life. When I first thought of what to take up for college, I honestly don't have in my mind. I don't have the skills I can relied on to know where I'm good at or simply, I don't really know where I'm good at. It was this moment when my sister told me that she wants to take accountancy program during college that made me think eto na lang. Thank you so much ate, for opening my life to dream. So when the Philippine government implemented the k-12 program which adds another two years of studying after highschool, I took up Accountacy, Business and Management strand knowing that I will really take up accountancy for college plus, my friends are there (number one reasons of some who can't decide, aminin na natin). So it all went well, I've graduated on time. But here's the major decision I need to do, choosing three programs to put on my application for college. Since I made up my mind few years ago (or so I thought), I put Bachelor of Science in Accountancy as my first choice and voila! I already finish two years of it. But the process wasn't easy —everyone knows that. I had a hard time during the first year. As an introvert, it wasn't easy to move to city to study all of a sudden. I'm used to going home to my family for my whole life and then suddenly, I need to be independent and live alone (not merely alone 'cause I'm with my friends but, you know? it's still different). I honestly think of it during high school, like there was a time me and my friends would talk about living in the same house when we got to college and all the fun things we will do —But it wasn't that easy. I need to prepare my own food, do grocery and laundry plus the struggle of studying.
I feel overwhelmed. During the first weeks, I barely passed my exams, I had so much in my mind, I'm not ready with the pressure alongside my program. It's as if we're used to hearing ay accountancy yan, matalino mga yan, but in reality, I'm not. I'm an overthinker, like a lot. And it didn't do good on me. After the first semester, I decided to moved back to my parents house, even if it meant to travel 4 hours everyday, back and forth. Luckily, my schedule wasn't that tight. I feel like a little burden was off of my shoulder when I decided to but of course, the struggle to get to pass my subjects was still there. Not a long time since second semester started, the virus came making all of our lives turn around all of a sudden. Schools were shut down for a moment expecting that after the first implemented lockdown, we will all go back to normal but that didn't happen. Online schooling was the new normal —which I've never expected to be this hard. Learning and studying things on your own wasn't that hard to think right? but it shaken the hell of me. I find it really difficult to study and learn, especially when 'home' for me was my resting place, where I'm running whenever I used to find a hard time from school and all of a sudden, it turns around! And with all the events going around, it made me overthink so much. Will I survive? Will I pass? Will I still going to get that three letters after my name? The entire time, I still have this thought in my mind, even if I'm doing all of I can to get through the program, I still think if this is really what I want, if this is where I really belong. Maybe because I still didn't get enough answers? or I'm just trying to find an excuse whenever I feel like I'm losing it? or maybe I just really didn't know if this is where the Lord wants me to be.
It's easy to say, especially those in older generations, that you'll get through it, that mental health issues was just an excuse. I know, we do have different take on life, especially with our generation, our thoughts and the way we see the world seems different from their's. And that's exactly because we actually lived in different time, it's not the same circumstances anymore. So it's not fine to say that arte lang yan. There's a bigger reason behind.
During those times before qualifying examination, especially when the rules were laid down, I was sure I will not make it, that I will not make it to the cut-off even if I pass. Who would have thought of passing if I barely passed my subjects right? So from that moment, I didn't get my hopes up that I will (less expectation, less pain). Even though I have doubts if this is still what I want, I still reviewed, I still hold on to the thought that maybe this is where I'm meant to be. I used to pray, Lord ikaw na po bahala sa'kin, if hindi para sa akin, sige lang po pero sana makapasa pa rin. Confusing right? Maybe it's because I still don't know where would I go if I didn't pass? How will I explain to my family and to those who knew and expecting that I can that I didn't make it? How will I make them understand? What will going to happen to me? What will I do with my life? What would my future will be? Saan ako pupunta pagkatapos? Those questions were lingering inside my head that I couldn't get enough sleep for weeks. I was so scared. Scared of disappointing those who believes in me. Scared of disappointing myself, 'cause I couldn't give my best to what I've decided. Disappointed that it is still not for me no matter what I did. Growing up, I've always been seeking for validation. I've always think that I need to do good for them to notice me 'cause if not, I will always just be left in the corner. I will always just be left behind. So I'm scared, takot na takot ako. Given also that I'm the youngest in the family, I have given this feeling that I'm the last resort of my parents that will give them a good life. I feel like I needed to do good 'cause they're expecting so much from me. But what if I got stumble? What will I do?
So tonight (days after the exam and days after I first started this entry), results are finally posted. I didn't make it. I did not pass the qualifying exam.
I honestly expected it already, I know it will be a miracle if my name would be included. But still, there's a little hope, I still have despite of how the exam happened. My friends checked on me upon knowing that the result was posted but all my replies are the same, that I'm okay and I will not cry. But still, I shed a tear, I'm still crying —cause finally the burden was finally lifted off.
I can now breathe.
I dreamt of becoming a CPA, and I still do...just in a different way, just in a new path. Congrats to those who made it! Padayon, CPA's!
I'm still scared...but I know God has better plans.
Onto the next one! 🥂
ciao⚘

1st of February, 2021
Monday nanaman. Yeah, it’s a mood always kapag monday talaga because class again but no choice, we must learn also right. Still, yes still, I have my cough and cold but it’s not that worse okay chill people baka sa makabasa nito kung ano isipin haha. I just really hope na maging okay na ako because my sister is really mad at me and she’s avoiding me lagi kami nagaaway because she hates my voice, she hates everytime I cough, she just hates everytime I’m sick because I’m really hardheaded and I understand she was traumatized when I got hospital before because of my sick and she doesn’t want again to happend that. Well for this day, we had our synchronous classes earlier in the morning and after our teacher discussed, I did our PT the letter. our homeroom activity and after I finished I took a rest and took a bath around 12 and because we don’t have our classes in afternoon, I just watched forensic files again as usual. Oh and I was excited a little everytime it’s monday or week days because inaabangan ko yung Ang Probinsyano yeah right, nakasanayan ko manood because my auntie is watching it and nasanay narin ako manood. I was excited for this day because Cardo will be awake na but it turns out tomorrow pa pala, very cliff-hanging nakakainis. Anyways, our teacher gave us another activity and the question is “Which situation do you consider as positive stress? As negative stress?” I consider my positive stress situation as every time I fangirl sa mga favorite groups ko and every time I watch forensic files or k-dramas etc. because everytime na naadik ako or nagugustuhan ko mas namo-motivate ako and they are my happy pill. My negative stress as every time we have a lot of school works to do. I really hate that every time we have a lot of school works dadagdagan pa ng mga utos dito sa bahay. I want to be productive like I love doing school works IF I’m not being interrupted like walang distorbo. And it really stress me there is this one time that we had so many activities and PTs, and nasaktuhan pa na may problema sa bahay, I was so so furious to the point that it made my cry. Yes mental breakdown lang malakas. Every time this happens to me I just have to cry dahil feel ko mababaliw ako but kinaya naman sa huli. Kakayanin dapat. Next question is “Are you afraid of tipping point when it comes to stress?“ My answer for that is, yes. It is really my weakness and I am really scared of it. Because I know, alam ko sa sarili ko na every time I got so stress feel ko mababaliw ako, feel ko punong puno ako and mental breakdown is no joke. Ang hirap umiyak lang ng umiyak. I have so so many problems now like literal na dinadamdam, this quarantine talaga ang laki ng nabago saakin. Dati I’m very known as go-lucky person like I love spreading happiness to anyone etc. even though I have a lot of problems because that’s my only way to overcome and forget it, just pretend that I don’t have problem, like I really love distracting myself by hanging out with my friends and eating outside etc. but how do I do it now? You know chatting with my friends are not enough hindi nakakagaan ng loob. And I didn’t really  expect na sasabog ng maraming problema ang 2020 mula sa family problems plus grabe yung adjustments ko sa online class. I was so so stressed, before kaya ko pa magkacrush like masasabi mo talaga na andami kong oras sa ibang bagay, but now? I don’t have anymore. I just want to be with my mom someday and be with my siblings and be with my friends at enough na yun. Like andami ko ng problema this is not about heartbroken I don’t really care anymore about crush or love, enough na saakin pagfa-fangirl. That’s why I’m so scared everytime I’m so stressed. Well, nagaadjust naman ako, I’m trying to be productive sometimes etc. I really want to know how to balance my emotions I’m still learning it how. And, I know the Almight is always there for me. That’s the only thing that gives me strength and keeps me positive. Anyways, I hope you all have a great day!

Technology & The Classroom: A blog for our class about technology By Katherine Vitale
I recently read a case about Amazon in one of my other marketing classes, and found myself amazed by how many products Amazon has that I have never even heard of.  In keeping with my last blog post about Alexa, I decided to look into Amazon’s services a little bit more and found what seems like one of Amazon’s passion projects— Amazon Inspire.
Amazon Inspire is the self-proclaimed “destination for K-12 educational resources.” It operates like an ideas marketplace, although all of the content is free to download. Essentially, teachers, administrators, or anyone with high-quality, relevant K-12 resources can upload and publish to Amazon Inspire. Teachers are then able to easily discover and gather quality educational content, and engage in a community of educators and people who are passionate about K-12 education. The site functions similarly to Amazon’s site that we are all familiar with. Users can search by features (ex: grade level, resource type, subject), and pick which resource is best suited for their needs by relying on the reviews of their peers. Amazon Inspire uses a rating system, so users can easily find the best content.
Tumblr media
Furthermore, Amazon has engaged large corporations to share content as well. For example, BioBuilder has the goal of “bringing tomorrow’s science into today’s classrooms.” Therefore, they published content focused on current questions and experiments in the field of synthetic biology. This initiative aims to support teachers as they try to encourage STEM careers in the classroom, largely by providing resources that are more up-to-date and applicable than a biology textbook. The Newseum, located in Washington DC, also decided to publish content, specifically focused on explaining and defending the First Amendment. In a time where the trustworthiness of “the media” is often questioned, the Newseum aims to teach students about the First Amendment and increase their media literacy. By using history and providing teachers with access to the Newseum’s primary sources, the Newseum aims to create educated students who are able to analyze and synthesize information and media by themselves. Both of these companies have nothing to gain from publishing content on Amazon Inspire, but use this platform as a way to give teachers access to exclusive content that will enhance their lesson plans. Amazon Inspire will help educators discover digital resources published by their peers and invested companies, and will hopefully improve the quality of education across the country.
After exploring this service specifically, I was inclined to learn about other ways that the “digital classroom” is becoming a reality. While I wasn’t expecting this to be a literal digital classroom, I discovered one school in Central California where kids are attending virtual school. Connections Academy is a high-quality, tuition-free online public school for grades K-12. Although this concept seems foreign, 93% of parents agree that the school’s technology tools improve their child’s learning experience. A study shows that online schools can provide students with the same level of achievement as traditional brick-and-mortar schools serving similar students. Although these schools are likely largely beneficial for people that struggle to go to a physical school (ex: for social or physical reasons), it is not difficult to imagine these schools becoming increasingly commonplace. Especially as many public schools do not receive adequate funding, digital schools could be explored as a way to “level the playing field” and allow students in low-income areas to access better education.
Lastly, I discovered that many school districts are experimenting with virtual reality in the classroom, specifically in middle and high schools. Schools are actually a good place to experiment with VR, even though the tech background is often not there. Since teachers are so open to learning and willing to take risks and experiment for their students, adaptation is often successful. Kris Hupp, the director of technology and instructional innovation at a small school district in PA, says that VR in the classroom is powerful because of how closely it can be linked with what students are learning on a day-to-day basis. For example, in an Environmental Science class, students are able to use VR to actually explore different biomes, or in a Social Studies class, students can attend presidential inaugurations as if they were actually there. Furthermore, the interest in pursuing STEM careers peaks in middle school and then sharply declines, especially among girls. In middle school, 74% of girls express an interest in engineering, science, and math, but only 0.3% choose computer science as their college major. By incorporating innovative technology into the classroom from a young age, students may discover a deeper passion for technology and continue to pursue this interest in higher education.
Tumblr media
Technology is becoming a larger and larger part of classrooms, if not becoming the classroom itself. As computers become a larger part of society, the integration of this technology into the classroom will hopefully develop an educational passion for these disciplines. At the very least, technology provides the opportunity for teachers to connect and figure out how to better their teaching, whether incorporating new tech or not.

Tumblr media

'There's no red tornadoes and blue tornadoes': Biden surveys damage in Kentucky | Daily Mail Online
You know what is sad? Kentucky was VERY MUCH A DEMOCRATIC STRONGHOLD for years! That changed when the brave, desperately poor people in rural Kentucky decided they had enough of outsiders raping their natural resources, tearing down the hills, destroying trees lakes and rivers, and TAKING EVERY SINGLE CENT OUT OF THE STATE!! They are tired of people making fun of them, how they live, how they speak, and DESTROYING the natural beauty of this state. We first took their trees, next we took their coal, and then we took the MOUNTAINS THEMSELVES, turning the natural beauty into a stark desert leaving behind coal sludge and chemicals to pollute the water that is not only killing wildlife but the people themselves through cancer, leukemia, and tumors.
This is a topic that affects me deeply. My family is from Appalachia, setting roots down on the Tug River which is the boundary between West Virginia and Eastern Kentucky. This was the home of King Coal, home of the Hatfields and McCoys, the Matewan massacre, and the roots for The Battle of Blair Mountain. My people struggled but survived. My Gran-Gran and Pa-Pa raised six kids who NEVER missed a day of school from K-12 on a coal miner's salary. They both knew that education was the key to giving their children a better life. All six left the mountains taking the Reading, 'Riting, and Route 23 to a better life. However, it was a rare Friday evening that those six children would not bring their own families back from Ohio and Michigan every weekend to those same mountains.
I spent most weekends and my blissful summers there. Arriving back each time to see my little family town change. First by watching my Pa-Pa die from Black Lung Disease. Then watching my Gran die from kidney disease, refusing to leave those hills. I watched a prideful town become a ghost land. Shops boarded up, mines closed, schools shut because any family that could leave did, and people starving because the run off from the mines killed fish and game life. I have watched my Gran's house and her neighbors burnt down from meth labs. I have seen it all. During this WHOLE time those mountain people had pride, never losing their love for those hills. Every single one of them just doing what they could to survive year after year. Silently watching as one more Democrat came through their town promising wealth, promising jobs, promising them hope. Watching as each and EVERY Democrat raping Kentucky's resources and taking all the profits out of state. Leaving only a once beautiful landscape looking like the moon. Destroying the natural beauty so thoroughly that Kentucky cannot have a tourism rebirth as a number of southern states have been able to.
So can you blame these brave, proud people for wanting to change? For wanting to turn their backs on the Democrat Party who turned their backs on them so many years ago?? I think not. So along comes 2016. We have a Democrat presidential candidate that literally called these beautiful people deplorable, low life's, and idiots. Then we have the other candidate who was a Republican who told them I see your hardship. I see your plight and want to help. So which one would you choose?
Unfortunately, their desperate choice to change allegiance made no difference. Nothing changed. They are still poor. Still hungry and still desperate for change. Then a huge natural disaster occurs and takes every last thing they owned and once again a politician comes to their town promising all those things they said they would do YEARS ago. Would you be opening your arms to welcome that politician? Would you believe him.?
If there is anyone still reading this rant please, please, please try to help. The Red Cross, The Humane Society, and churches are trying desperately to feed, clothe, shelter, and comfort as many as they can. They have lost EVERYTHING. Anything is appreciated, especially water and warm clothes. Pet supplies are needed as well, as many pets were blown miles away from their homes. These people are prideful but would give you the clothes on their back if you needed it. I know many of us are struggling financially ourselves and money is tight. That is okay. All I ask is that you please pray for them. If you got this far reading, thank you. I really mean that. Forgive my rantings. I love Kentucky and it's people. Those hills still mean home to me and I want others to see it's beauty and show those wonderful people that live there the love and respect they deserve after a lifetime of insults and promises that were never kept. Thank you. -SMG🤍🖤🤎💜💙💚💛🧡❤
Here is a song called Reading, Writing, and Route 23 by Dwight Yoakum. It tells the story of my family and many others who left their homes in the hills hoping to give their children a chance to have a better life. Yet returning as often as possible because those hills still calls us as it did for our parents and as it does now for our own children. I hope you like it.
