Rejoice! Ace is back! Ace is alive!

Luffy knows it since Marco announced it in chapter 1059 (episode 1087). Marco is saying : "I know Ace is proud of your progress too, yoi!", but it got lost in translation.

But now he is back in chapter 1121, right as Vegapunk is talking about those persecuted for their ancestry. The pictures give examples we know have been hunted for their bloodline : Kuma, Ace!, Marco, Whitebeard, Pudding and King.

Further evidence is the two millimeters of picture visible on the right of page 7 in the original version, which are absent from the translations, even the official ones. If you look closesly (and zoom in if you have an electronic version), Ace's tattoo is visible in that small section!

i’ve mentioned a few times before that coby is one of the most politely-spoken male characters in the whole manga and he’s honestly so proper that it’s instantly recognizable. i looked at this page and knew right away it was coby speaking because of the polite verb forms.

i think he’s the only marine we’ve ever seen to address pirates, even pirates he doesn’t know, with polite language- here he’s addressing hancock with the respectful honorific -san, and using the polite anata for her.

coby and garp have the same epithet even in japanese. they were both named 英雄 (eiyū) instead of ヒーロー (hīrō) even though i'm pretty sure hīrō is more commonly used than eiyū (although it might just be an oda thing

garp was a friend of the pirate king and coby's a friend of the future pirate king - not to mention, coby 'inherited' garp's skills and luffy inherited roger's hat

honestly, it doesn't seem like there are a lot of parallels right now, but it definitely seems like there are going to be a lot in the future - which makes me a bit worried about what's going to happen to them...

Hi! During Amazon Lily (ch522 and ch523) Gloriosa talks about the two other Empresses. In the translation it says "the previous empress died of this illness, as did the empress before her" and "(they) ruined themselves by suppressing those feelings". Since Shakky is very much alive, are there any nuances in the original Japanese text that didn't come through with the translation that suggests those two empresses didn't die for real? Thank you!

oooh, good question! i'd forgotten about this line!

so, if i'm reading it right, there is a small but important distinction here between the japanese and the english. gloriosa says 先代皇帝もこの病で死んだ/sendai koutei mo kono yamai de shinda, "the previous empress also died of this disease."

however, when talking about the empress two generations in the past (so, shakky) she says 先々代も同じだったそうじゃ/sensendai mo onaji datta sou ja. the important word here is sou, which is a pretty versatile word in japanese that can have several meanings- in contexts like this, it usually means 'seems'/confers a sort of uncertainty on the statement. so her statement about shakky is something like "it the empress before her seems to have been the same" or "it seems the same befell the empress before her." there's a few ways you could translate it.

given she seems (from the one panel we get) unsurprised that shakky is alive when we get the reveal in chapter 1059, my guess is that shakky faked her death or otherwise chose to suddenly disappear when she quit pirating, and that gloriosa was aware and may have helped her cover for it.

I miss the pre-timeskip art style so much! the animation back then was cheaper and the quality wasn't always the best, but just look at how much more personality shines through in just a single still shot. Zoro is making the same face in both but the pre-timeskip feels more expressive!
