This very saturday December 17th from Noon to Midnight PST @sufficientowls and myself will be doing our annual charity stream, Stream of the Sugar Plum Fairies!

We’ll have plenty of friends on and the ability for the audience to participate in our Minecraft Winter Wonderland Village and battle against us in Fall Guys! But that’s not all! We’ll be battling with our companions in Golf with your Friends, testing our knowledge in Holiday Themed Jeopardy!, doing everyones favorite holiday activity - deceiving each other in One Night Ultimate Werewolf, and solving our way through escape room type puzzles in Escape Academy!!

Additionally, every year we do this stream for charities in both Portland and Minneapolis. This year we’ll be splitting all donations between The Bridge for Youth in Minneapolis, and Outside In from Portland. Both of these charities help out the unhoused in their respective cities. On stream donation incentives will be announced day of, so keep an eye out for that!

One final piece of info for you about this stream: It’ll be happening over on twitch.tv/infinitybreakgaming. We’re super close to our goal of 250 followers, which will unlock the Warathon - a streaming marathon of Wario Land and Wario Ware games. So there's this game i like called One Night Ultimate Werewolf, and I am gonna tell you about my favorite combination of roles, which i like to call either the chaos version or night more version (if you don't know the game i would recommend looking it up, i would explain it myself but whenever i do that i usually end up making the other person even more confused, so you'd probably understand it more with no explanation than mine)

So in this role combo you basically make it as difficult as possible to definitively know what role you are, and so depending on how many people are playing you add some to all of these roles (with 2 werewolves by default)

Troublemaker - switches 2 other players cards without looking at them

Robber - switches their cars with another plays card (they do look at the card they took)

Drunk - switches their card with one of the 3 center cards without looking at their new card

Doppelgänger - looks at another players card and becomes that role (also the card stays that new role, meaning if for example the robber steals the doppelgänger card they have no clue what they are and whose side they're on)

if you need more roles after this, then you add one or both of these depending on the number of players

Tanner - wants to die, villagers and werewolves both lose if the tanner dies but the tanner wins if they die

Insomniac - looks at their card at the end of the night to see what they now are

if you still need more cards then you add the villager roles

So in this monstrosity of a role combo at the end of the night the only person who knows who they are is the insomniac (as long as they don't have the doppelgänger roles) and everyone else now has no idea if they are still the role they started with or if they are now on the opposite team and so most of the talking portion of the game is just figuring out what the hell happened and it's my favorite way to play

Dad of 3 earns all my accolades. Dude realized his kids were seriously into something and instead of dismissing it as kid stuff, he got genuinely curious and probably came out of this ordeal with some understanding of what was going on.

Personally, my money's always been on finding a board game equivalent to serve as an explanation vector, in case one of my Boomer colleagues get curious about something. As for Among Us, I'd compare it to One Night Ultimate Werewolf, with some extra tasks thrown on to keep the players busy.

As, honestly, the entire design doc for Among Us reads like the dude went "I just played Werewolves at a party and it was awesome! Damn, I sure wish Werewolves were a viral hit on Steam..."

One Night Ultimate Werewolf

Yesterday we played One Night Ultimate Werewolf. It was so fun! The game changes each time and keeps you guessing and strategizing and laughing out loud!! I laughed until I cried more than once. We downloaded the app that goes with it so there’s a voice that tells you when to wake up and stuff. It is so much fun!! We want to get all the expansion packs now! Sky baked another pastry from scratch…

While I appreciate hearing about this solution, anyone wanting to play a Mafia-like game without player elimination should check out One Night Ultimate Werewolf! It has only one night where things change and players are given information, one day where players can share information and deduce who's who, and a single voting round. It sounds like it really shouldn't work, but it absolutely does! The main rule change needed to make it work is that just because you started the night as a werewolf doesn't have to mean you are on the werewolf team when the night ends.

Everyone can get a special role that either does something during the night or has some other advantage. This removes the issue of not having any info but still having to figure out how to get someone else killed so you're not the one removed early on in the game. That issue is the one that I've felt the most problematic with playing normal Mafia/Werewolf in a camp setting, as it's typically easier to get a player who's less liked by the player group to be killed early; this can be/feel a bit too close to bullying if it means everyone's not on equal footing even before the game starts. But in ONUW, since the game's over after the only round of voting, you're no longer voting for player elimination. There are also several ways to win even if you get the most votes in the end. So it's a bad strategy to not vote based on the info you're given, and more importantly, the info you figure out by listening during the day. The game's played with an app that does the job of the narrator/storyteller, so everyone can actively play. Plus there's a bunch of different roles you can swap in and out between games to stop the meta from becoming stale, especially if you get an expansion. A single game can be played in under 15 minutes, so we typically play a bunch of games in a single session. (Otherwise the rules explanation can take longer than the first game if someone's playing for the first time.)

The box says 3-10 players, and while that's technically true, with 3-4 players you get a lot of non-games where everyone has either too much or too little information to make the game work. But it really does work as a social deduction game with only 5 players. With an expansion it's also possible to go above 10 players. I highly recommend One Night Ultimate Werewolf and its first expansion Daybreak. There are also a few stand alone games in the series that can also be combined with the base game for more chaos. Of them I don't really recommend One Night Ultimate Vampires due to adding extra components that overly complicates things. One Night Ultimate Aliens also adds complexity, but in a much better way, as you can chose to include however many or few roles from it as is appropriate for your play group without also having to add any other components. One Night Ultimate Super Villains is more of a re-implementation and re-theme of the roles from the base game and Daybreak. So it has a few new mechanically new things, but not enough to be worth buying if you own the base game.

So Mafia is easily like, camp game of all time, but the bummer is that in most variations the “ghosts” can’t do much once their character is killed.

My campers have remedied this by making sure that every “night,” when the town “sleeps” they find the largest and most outrageous object they can move silently into the center of the circle so everyone will laugh when they wake up.

Even now with a leash attached to his pretty collar and the muzzle fit snuggly on his face, he still pulls and tugs on the leash, growling lowly as other hybrids pass by on your daily walks around the park. But at least now you nor anyone else has to worry about things getting out of hand.
