Some Award-Winning Paint Jobs have Come Out of this Home Garage

During his youth, Jim Mayer of Omaha, Nebraska aspired to be a professional body man. He was so committed to the trade that he studied it for four years while attending Omaha’s Technical High School. “I was always into cars and was driven toward fixing my own,” he says. “I received my body shop education and immediately began looking for a job when I graduated. I quickly learned that shops expected you to bring your own tools in and as someone just out of high school, I couldn’t afford anything like that. I became discouraged and looked outside the industry for a job.”

Jim took a warehouse job with a family-owned electrical company. He eventually learned the electric trade and went on to become a partner when the family sold the business. Jim recently retired from that company after 50 years of service, but remains employed on a part-time basis to stay busy.

Despite the initial discouragement, Jim was determined to use his formal education as a hobbyist even back then. “I began by working on my own projects until I felt comfortable enough to work on others. Once my modified 1968 Camaro became an ISCA national-class champion, I was confident enough to do that. Over the years I worked on everything from rust repair to collision work to modified show cars. Today, I cherry pick the jobs I take on and usually limit that to fun projects.”

When Jim built his ranch-type custom home in 2007, he included an oversized attached garage to continue his hobby. As an electrical-industry professional, it should come as no surprise that his home boasts 200-amp service to supply enough power for such equipment as his Millermatic 211 welder, a good ventilation system, and a Berko 5000-watt electric heater, which maintains a suitable working environment during the Nebraska winters. Here’s a look at the finer details of Jim’s garage.

1. A pair of 16-foot doors allows entry into Jim’s 1,200 sq/ft attached garage.

2. Jim purchased this 1955 Chevy during the mid ‘90s. Up to that point it had spent its entire life in Southern California and as a result, was very solid and rust-free and retains all its original sheet metal. Originally black, Jim repainted it Subaru’s Burnished Bronze in 2015, but not before performing any needed body panel straightening. It’s powered by a small-block 350-ci, which is backed by a TH700R4 automatic transmission.

3. This 1964 Chevy Nova was the latest addition to Jim’s stable. Beyond minor touchup work, the Toyota red exterior remains just as purchased. Under hood is a 454-inch Chevy backed by a 700R4 automatic transmission and Ford 9-inch rear end. The back end was mini-tubbed to accommodate tires large enough to harness the big block torque.

4. Jim uses a pulldown tarp as a barrier to prevent sanding dust and overspray from reaching the forward portion of the garage when working on projects.

5. The wall-of-fame contains photos of the many beautiful cars that Jim has built over the years. Included among them is his modified 1968 Camaro, which was awarded three ISCA national-class championships.

6. Jim painted this 1972 Camaro for owner, Rick Lett in 2016. The Chevrolet F-car was little more than a shell when Rick purchased it. Jim installed new quarter panels and a complete front clip including fenders, hood, and grill shell. Jim then applied the Dark Pine Metallic exterior and complemented it with black stripes.

7. A 60-gallon Speedaire compressor provides the supply of the high-volume air required for professional-quality finishes.

8. Jim uses Dupont and Nason products exclusively. These days he prefers base/clear for its overall ease of usability when compared to lacquer and single-stage. He also likes to 3M sandpapers and fast-cut compounds for initial surface finishing and Meguiar’s products for polishing.

9. A Motor Guard water trap separates moisture from the compressed air when painting. Jim has found that a typical roll of household toilet paper provides the best filtration media for hot and humid Nebraska summers.

10. Jim prefers Chicago Pneumatic air tools. His assortment includes a dual-action sander, straight-line sander, and high-speed buffer. Sata paint guns are used for larger surfaces and a Paasche air brush is kept on hand for smaller details.

11. A decades-old Columbian metal sheer makes sheet metal trimming quick and easy task for Jim.

12. Several Craftsman chests house Jim’s various hand tools.
