Ireland’s Natalya Coyle books her place at Olympics 2020 Games
Natalya Coyle is heading to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic after accomplishing her mission at the European Modern Pentathlon Championships in Bath, England. With eight Olympic 2020 places on offer in the women’s final, the 28-year-old from Meath secured hers with something to spare to give herself a full 12 months to prepare for her third Games. Olympic Modern Pentathlon followers from all over the world can buy Olympic Modern Pentathlon tickets online.
Coyle finished eighth on the day and fourth among those eligible for Olympic qualification, crossing the line 14 seconds ahead of the top-ranked unsuccessful qualifier in 14th. Ireland’s Sive Brassil also performed with distinction, finishing 16th.
After a solid day, Coyle had started the decisive Laser-Run the event in fourth place, only 11 seconds behind the leader and effectively third in the race for Tokyo 2020 Olympic as there were two Belarus athletes ahead of her, only one of whom could qualify.
At the end of a skillful presentation, she over behind fellow qualifiers Kate French, Iryna Prasiantsova and Annika Schley and ahead of Gintare Venckauskaite, Marie Oteiza, Adelina Ibatullina, and Sarolta Kovacs.
“I’m over the moon,” said Coyle. “The day went so well even though I was really nervous about the qualification. I was a little rocky at the start of fencing but pulled it back in the middle. Then the horse riding went really well and I just gave it everything in the Laser-Run. I knew I needed a solid run/shoot to finish it over. I can’t describe how happy I am.”
Given the caliber of the field in the nonappearance of injured Olympic champion Chloe Esposito of Australia, European women have totally conquered the 2019 UIPM season – today’s recital will go down as one of the highlights of Coyle’s career.
The London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympian recorded the 12th-fastest swimming time, 2min 16.99sec for her 200m freestyle, while Brassil ranked seven places higher after a swim of 2:13.66.
Coyle made her move up the leaderboard during the fencing, where she achieved 21 wins from her 35 bouts for a ranking of eighth that elevated her to sixth overall. Brassil’s prospects suffered a blow as she achieved the opposite score of 14 wins and 21 defeats.
When it came to the riding, Brassil escaped some of the major damage others were suffering but a score of 269 wasn’t quite the boost she would have been looking for in terms of the Tokyo Olympic Games qualification.
Coyle knew that even a respectable score would keep her in contention for that coveted Olympic 2020 place. She responded with one of the best rides of the day, dislodging only one obstacle for a score of 291 that briefly gave her the overall lead.
Only one athlete, Adelina Ibatullina of Russia, achieved a perfect score of 300 and there was a major upset when the final rider, Rio 2016 silver medallist Elodie Clouvel of France, suffered elimination, throwing open the race for gold and moving Coyle one place closer to the dream outcome.
Paddy Boyd, Pentathlon Ireland chief executive, said: “We are delighted that one of the automatic qualification slots for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games have been secured at an early opportunity. “We commend Natalya and her support side on this fine achievement, and we would also like to highlight a good performance by a promising young athlete, Sive Brassil.”
Twenty-one of the 36 berths in the women’s pentathlon in Tokyo is still up for grabs and the next opportunity for Brassil and team-mate Eilidh Prise will be the 2019 Pentathlon World Championships in Budapest, where three more places will be at stake. However, Arthur Lanigan-O’Keeffe has announced that his season is overdue to an Achilles injury.
The 27-year-old from Kilkenny finished 25th in the men’s final in Bath on Saturday and revealed on Twitter that he had been unable to train fully for some time due to the Achilles problem.
Tweeted: “I am heartbroken, to say the least, that I didn’t get an automatic Olympic 2020 qualification slot or even come close to replicating my winning performance from 4 years ago. Though, that being said I am still incredibly proud of what I achieved today. Not because I am content with mediocrity but because the real truth is I have been hiding an injury.”
Lanigan-O’Keeffe will still be able to qualify for the Olympics 2020 Games next year with ranking points on offer at a number of competitions in 2020.

The duo of Arthur Lanigan-O'Keeffe and Natalya Coyle put in an excellent presentation to defend the title they claimed last year in Sarasota in the United States.
Hungary's Sarolta Kovacs and Gergely Demeter completed the opening 200 meters swim in the fastest time of 1min 56.8sec to sit ahead of Russia's Gulnaz Gubaydullina and Alexander Savkin and the Irish pair.
In the fencing, Lanigan-O'Keeffe and Coyle claimed 19 victories to top the pile and although they lost a bonus round bout to Egypt, they were able to take control of the competition once more in the riding.
A clear round confirmed they entered the laser-run with a strong lead of 23 seconds and they protected their benefit. The Irish ended as winners with 1,499 points as France's Valentin Prades and Julie Belhamri took silver on 1,478. The Russian couple came home for bronze on 1,459.
"We were strong from start to finish and it was one of those days that you don't get very often in the pentathlon" said Lanigan-O'Keeffe.
It was a seriously good field and we performed well in all events so we are delighted. We had a great swim and then won the fencing, and the riding and laser-run went well so it was a perfect day - fantastic. It is a great feeling to be able to stand on top of the podium and hear the national anthem of Ireland.

Halfway to Heaven for the Olympic Gladiators of Olympic Modern pentathlon
With nine months to go until the 25th Olympic Modern Pentathlon, 17 females and 17 male pentathletes have secured an Olympic 2020 qualification place on behalf of their nations. Pending selection* by their National Olympic Committees, each of these athletes can start to live the dream, to plan their course to the podium that will be erected in Tokyo Stadium, where the ultimate prize in sport awaits.
In some countries, there will be tough conversations about which two athletes of each gender to select. In Belarus, qualification places have been earned by the 2019 women’s individual world champion, Volha Silkina, and Iryna Prasiantsova. Nonetheless the 2018 world champion, Anastasiya Prokopenko could also earn qualification next year. All three stood atop the podium as team world champions in Budapest (HUN), but only two can go to Tokyo Olympic.
Similarly, Lithuania’s women athletes have already earned two quota places, while the men of Great Britain and France have done the same. Internal rivalries are sure to come into play in the coming months.
For the majority of the 34 qualified athletes who will have a sense of assurance about their position, the relief will be immense. With the primary pressure of qualification out of the way, they can start to tackle the secondary pressure – performing to their best in Tokyo 2020.
So who else will be among the 72 gladiators competing in the capital city of Japan next August, and how will they get there?
The next qualification opportunity comes in November (11-21), when the Asia/Oceania Championships and Olympic 2020 Qualifier will take place in Wuhan (CHN). Ten athletes from Asia (five women and five men) will earn qualification places here, along with one female and one male from Oceania. The reigning women’s Olympic champion, Chloe Esposito (AUS), is aiming to overcome injury in time to compete.
After that, 26 places will remain up for grabs, with a range of pathways in 2020 promising to lead the world’s most versatile athletes to their coveted destination.
Six automatic places (three each for women and men) will be on offer in Xiamen (CHN) during the UIPM 2020 Pentathlon and Laser-Run World Championships in May.
Japan, as host nation, will be guaranteed at least one place per gender, and two places per gender will be reserved for the Tripartite Commission, which has the right to allocate berths by invitation to NOCs that apply before 17 January 2020.
That leaves about 12 places to be earned by right, and this will be where the key battleground takes place next year. The UIPM Olympic World Ranking List will be closely monitored throughout the Pentathlon World Cup season as athletes vie for position, hoping to secure one of 12 places (six females, six male) when the final list is published on 1 June – one day after the end of the World Championships.
In June 2020, the process of selection will be formalized as NOCs and National Federations are officially informed of the number of quotas places they have earned, with the option of handing any or all of them back, leading to a reallocation according to the ranking list. July 6 is the deadline for all entries to Tokyo Olympic the day when we will know for sure the identity of those 72 gladiators.
