Olympic 2020 Tickets: World Taekwondo toasts Para Taekwondo Day ahead of Tokyo Olympic debut
Para-taekwondo will be like nothing that has ever previously been seen at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. That’s the view of Olof Hansson, director of Para-taekwondo, as the sport celebrates Para-Taekwondo Day today.
Fans from all over the world are called to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms Olympic Tickets. Olympic Boxing fans can book Olympic Taekwondo Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively at reduced prices.
Today also marks the sixth anniversary since taekwondo was added to the Paralympic programmed for the first time. The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) announced Para-taekwondo would become the Paralympic Games’ first full-contact sport at a Governing Board meeting on January 31 in 2015. It was a historic moment for the sport which was created just 15 years ago and now stands on the brink of making its Paralympic debut.
It’s extremely exciting, Hansson told. It’s the biggest event that has ever happened to Para-taekwondo. Now we are just hoping to make a good showing and I am certain we will do because I believe this is a sport that is like nothing that has ever previously been seen on the Paralympic Games program.
It will play a major factor in the growth of Para-taekwondo in the coming years and we will see a lot more interest from National Paralympic Committees. The sport was already big before the inclusion in the Paralympic Games, but I believe that thanks to the work of our committees this has been further increased.
Para-taekwondo was poised to make its first appearance at a Paralympics last year only for Tokyo 2020 to be postponed to 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. But Hansson praised the response of World Taekwondo.
This is a project that I have been working on for quite a long time so it did take a few days to let it sink in that the Games weren’t happening in 2020, supposed Hansson. But that very quickly went away once we had contact from the IPC and started to find out more information.
Of course, it was a big hit to any sports organization involved in the Paralympic and Olympic 2020 Games. You are set for an event to happen at a certain date and it gets delayed by a year. But World Taekwondo has a very good leadership that has been able to restart and refocus the organization.
We have two wonderful committees connected to Para-taekwondo in the Para-Taekwondo Committee and the Classification Committee. They have been working very hard during 2020 to develop education programmers, to review rules and put us in the best possible position for the upcoming Games and the next Paralympic cycle.
The 2019 Para-Taekwondo World Championships nearly doubled in size from the event in 2017 and World Taekwondo expect that trend to continue at the ninth edition in Wuxi in China later this year.
World Taekwondo said fighters including Denmark’s Lisa Guessing and Britain’s Amy Truesdale had lined up lucrative endorsements, while world champions Viki Marchuk of Ukraine and Juan Diego Garcia Lopez of Mexico had won their country’s highest sporting awards. Last April also saw World Taekwondo launching its Kicking It at Home social media campaign which saw more than 725,000 people watch over 2,000 hours of Para athletes training at home.
"Throughout the whole COVID-19 period we have noticed that athletes have continued to post their training videos and stay active on social media," added Hansson.

Olympic Tickets: US Olympic swimming team trials split into two due to COVID-19
USA Swimming, in partnership with the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC), has announced a revised schedule to split the 2020 US Olympic Team Trials into two competitions, with these acting as qualifiers for the Tokyo Olympics.
Olympic fans from all over the world are called to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms Summer Games Tickets. Olympic Gymnastics admirers can book Olympic Swimming Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively at reduced prices.
These trials will be divided into two waves, respectively from June 4 to 7 and June 13 to 20. The second wave will be the sole qualifier for swimmers to make the US Olympic team. USA Swimming and USOPC decided in cooperation with the Omaha Sports Commission.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the trials have been split to reduce numbers and the risk of spreading the virus. A total of 1,305 athletes have qualified for the trials to date since the qualifying window opened on November 28 2018.
"Given the current environment, and the need to address concerns related to over-crowding in the athlete areas, warm-up pool and athlete seating areas, the decision was made to divide the event into two," said a USA Swimming statement.
USA Swimming chief executive Mike Unger added that the decision was taken based on the continuous spread of the virus.
"We undertook a thorough and methodical evaluation of the trials over the last several months and factored in several critical considerations in our decision," said Unger.
Our number one priority was to find a way to host trials in the safest possible environment while also giving the athletes the best opportunity to succeed.
"While selecting the Olympic team for Tokyo is a critical goal for the trials, it is important to note that the experience gained at trials by some of the lower-seeded athletes has historically provided a great experience for future Olympic trials (and Games), which fueled our desire to host two events."
To keep numbers down, USA Swimming has adjusted the trials time standard to the current 41st seeded time, with athletes who have met or bettered those times automatically advancing to the second wave, meaning there will be a final field of approximately 750 athletes.
This qualifying window is set to stay open until May 30, with athletes already with the standard not being required to requalify. The Tokyo Olympics is scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 8 2021. To date, there have been more than 26 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the United States, resulting in the deaths of over 436,000 people.

Nyika is already assured of his place at the Games, having advanced through from the Asia-Oceania Olympic qualifier last year.
"It’s kind of made sense to take this opportunity and get more competition here in New Zealand," Nyika told Radio New Zealand.
The chances are the travel restrictions are going to cripple us, so getting a bit more variety is key for me and just getting as much experience as I can leading up to the Olympics. I've had 94 fights to date and I'd like to get to 100 before the Olympics, but that's unlikely unless I make it through to a gold medal match, which would be nice.
I've finished my apprenticeship in boxing and now it's time to start cashing-in. I've been a full-time amateur boxer for the last six years now and it hasn't got me anywhere financially, so I need to start making some moves and maybe looking abroad to see what opportunities there are overseas as well.
Nyika will make his professional debut in the cruiserweight division. He is due to contest the men’s heavyweight division at Tokyo Olympic, where he would become the first male New Zealand boxer to compete at the Olympics since Athens 2004.
Nyika has enjoyed success at the Commonwealth Games, winning light-heavyweight gold at Glasgow 2014. He secured gold four years later in the heavyweight division at Gold Coast 2018.
