hello mr. haitch, hope youre doing well!
i am writing this because i am utterly frustrated with my physics teacher today
so i missed 3 weeks of school; for good reason, and i had sent an application for my leave which got approved (im in my last year of high school).
so within these 3 weeks, we had class tests that i missed so i had to take missed tests. now the day i returned, my teacher asked me to take the test and of course, i wasnt ready. a week passed and he hadnt given me a solid date for the test. today, i asked him again and he said i was supposed to take the test yesterday and since i hadnt reached out to him, he would simply give me a zero. i kept trying to tell him that he hadnt given me a date for the test (bcz theres no way i wouldve missed that), and he kept denying.
then, this other student came in and he said he was supposed to take the same missed test today. so my teacher asked me if i wanted to sit for it today. (mind you, i missed three weeks of classes which included the lectures for the topic this test was on and i had no idea as to what its about). but i knew it was a now or never thing so i had to sit for it today after studying for like 15 minutes. (alevel physics is hard!!!!)
im probably failing idek i wrote about stuff i learned back in my olevel days and i hate my physics teacher now.
Jesus, what a clown.
Sorry you've been landed with an impatient asshat. Is there anyone in your class whose notes you can borrow to catch up?
Fortunately, A-levels are mercifully short so you won't have to deal with them for much longer. If they continue to be a problem you can always speak to the department head or (and this was how I handled hating my lecturers) find out the topics you need to cover and hit the library hard until the end of term.
That second method might land you in trouble, though, as I often skipped classes. Sorry.

INTERVIEW - SCHOOL VS UNI
I interviewed my peer, hemansha, and had her give her point of view on the transition from school to uni.
How would you compare the projects/assignments that you had to do in school vs uni?
So it’s like completely different right?
Assignments in school, were homework, that we had to do everyday, and they didn’t really count at the end for our overall exam grades.
But in uni there’s obviously assignments which they grade, that do count towards the final grades which is also a contribution towards passing the modules.
Did school do a good job at preparing you for the adult life? (higher education/work life)
Oh no, definitely not! I had no idea what olevels were until i actually did olevels, until the final few grades, I had no idea what I was doing. School also put of much of pressure on you since middle school to do better, but none of that matters now. Like even currently, our grades dont really matter right? so yeah.
In terms of adult life in different aspects that’s a no either, the teachers kind of like teach you life skills while teaching but other than that no.
How would you compare the school syllabus to the Northumbria (AOD) syllabus?
School syllabus is a lil more studying and memorizing all that, it’s different for the London syllabus right?
Yes actually, I did the London syllabus for both olevels and alevels and I think I would’ve kind of preferred the more textbook based examinations actually but yes. For the london syllabus, we basically had questions that would test analytical and critical thinking skills, without just textbook knowledge but in a way it helped and kind of does come in handy right now too and i think that’s exactly what design uni is about.
Did you enjoy or feel to do your school assignments? how do you feel about doing your uni assignment?
There’s a huge difference there because you would think that if there’s a subject you like you would’ve enjoyed doing your homework right? so i generally did all my homework whether i liked it or not.
But in uni, I really like the assignments and i want to get them done because its basically my hobbies but in a more educational setting, so that was basically the difference for me.
How would you explain the freedom you had to learn in school vs uni?
Yeah I think uni has a lot more self studying and exploration while in school you get everything handed to you and you could just read the book and get the ideas.
Plus, the teachers would teach you exactly what to know and that packed with the fact that we don’t need anymore knowledge, you wouldn’t go exploring on your own, but for this if you cant do this then you’re expected to find a way and figure it out in your own, so yes.

Process of Researching
As we were about to begin our research, we separated ourselves into pairs where we focused on two seperate categories and created two subcategories for each,
the pairs were; Hemansha and I Alevels to University -A/L to abroad -A/L to local university Idusara and Semini Olevels to University -O/L to abroad -O/L to local university
Although all of us had agreed to use the same set of questions for both categories, to ensure there is reliability as well. Hemansha and I mainly focused people who were available readily at hand and also preferred to use participants who were not apart of AOD, so that it would be more generalizable.
the responses we received were different especially in terms of culture and syllabus, this is due to each individual's preference and personality.
the information to which i had received came from two classmates who had undergone the same London A/L process and had gone abroad (Australia, and New Zealand)
Australia
When u switched from als to Uni, what did you notice different in teachers? I noticed they didn't really care about students actually learning. Of course they are extremely strict when coming to meeting deadlines for assignments but hardly caring about how much students learn and if they understand the subject content. You just become a nameless face in a crowd of 50 to around 400 other students.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of the syllabus between uni and als? Advantages is university doesn't solely focus on a final exam, they structure their syllabus on a weekly basis, whereas A levels is dependent on 2 exams per subject which doesn't really help students in getting extra credit. Disadvantages would be that university syllabus is made in a way that you need to have prior knowledge or you'll easily fall behind whereas A levels goes more in depth for the foundation of each subject. How was the schl culture different to Uni culture? How did u grow accustomed to it and adapt (if u did) School has a sense of unity that university doesn't have, once you finish your lecture everyone is out the door while the lecturer is still talking whereas in school, everyone bounced off ideas with the lecturer and cleared their doubts. Best way to adapt is by making friends in your classes who you can talk about the syllabus and just general thoughts on that class.
What are some of the interesting shifts in class dynamics u see in Uni? Certain students will only interact with their own friends, it becomes difficult to approach people a week or 2 into classes because they stick to whoever they initially familiarised with again like I said there is no real sense of unity, its more of an individual task you finish and just head to your home, next lecture or meeting
New Zealand
When u switched from als to Uni, what did you notice different in teachers? All the HS teachers who said the uni teachers would care lied. They don't really mind most things like leaving to go to the bathroom or eating/drinking in class or even talking, as long as you don't disrupt the whole lesson. They're pretty informal and sometimes closer to students because of that (depends on class size) and most of them are a but more enthusiastic about lessons and teaching in general, possibly cause its semester 1 but idk. But actually the London A level teachers are pretty similar to uni lecturers, the real difference is from like middle/upper school to uni.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of the syllabus between uni and als? Honestly right now the content I'm studying is mostly the same as A levels for the subjects I have in common because I'm doing the core courses of my degree. It's a huge advantage that I'm familiar with it because lecturers don't actually teach this stuff much during class. You're expected to learn using the given materials and recordings at home and come prepared for class.
How was the schl culture different to Uni culture? How did u grow accustomed to it and adapt (if u did) Soo different omg. Particularly because I'm at uni in a different country as well, on top of going from a private, Christian, all-girls school. Uni is a lot more loose and relaxed like there's literally a bar on campus… that we're encouraged to go to?? It's a completely different atmosphere and it's weird not having your friends and the culture you grew up in. My suggestion and what's worked for me so far is literally just be nice and go to events a lot!!! And not just like clubbing (I didnt) or parties, tho you can do that, I mean like when clubs put on activities or are hosting launches at the start of the semester, go for them and talk to people. Making friends at uni is honestly not hard. That said, also don't worry if you miss one or two events u wanted to go for, I missed out on a whole bunch or skipped them (and subsequently, felt like i was missing out) but I've definitely still made friends. Figure out a schedule that works for you!! I organised my classes so I have a lot of free time to do the actual studying required and still have time to rest, socialize and cook. Try not to fall behind on little things like the quizes or weekly assessments, modules etc… if u do, be straight up with the lecturer and explain your situ and then get a concession! Cry! Like a lot! You're literally leaving everything you've ever known behind for a new environment, you're allowed to grieve. I cried so many times and probably will a lot more, but u have to get used to getting back up afterwards. U will definitely feel better after a good cry, some water and a nap.
What are some of the interesting shifts in class dynamics u see in Uni? Literally no one cares. Guaranteed. Do what you want just don't bother others. Most people are pretty nice and if not you can talk to people that are. But there's a lot of friends that you'll have ONLY in class, who u may stop being friends with the minute the sem is over or something. It happens, if u don't want it to, make an effort to be closer to those people before the sem ends. If they're interested yay! (Oh god group assignments with the dumbest reasons for grouping are a bit of a nightmare.)

i think it was really stupid when teachers used to tell you that because you're in the last month before some official exams (olevels, alevels, sat, uni entrance exams) you have to stop having fun and also remember you won't get much sleep ... actually no ? things go better when i read a book in a day a day before the exam and then spend 3 hours revising that's it

Home tutor in Islamabad
According to statistics 67% and 59% of students in urban and rural areas, respectively, take private coaching classes after school with either an academy, or a private online/home tutor. **Daniel is in desperate need of $50-60 (42-45,000 RWF) for food and housing!! He is running out of money at the end of this week and doesn’t know what to do!**
Friends, please help Daniel! He is currently at a different more expensive campus where his degree program sent him as part of the program and will again be moving soon - he is running out of money! Next week, he won’t be able to pay for his food or his housing and he doesn’t know what to do, donations are his only option at the moment, as he is moving between places and can’t have a job.
A little later in November, Daniel will also need to pay his tutition for the next semester which will be about $350 with his housing and other fees - please, we helped Daniel get to his third year, let’s help him through it! His other option is to drop out and he is not sure that he can find any kind of a job that will sustain him without a degee. Below is Daniel’s story and a link to the GoFundMe where his fundraiser was previously housed, but was moved due to high donation and withdrawal fees.
Daniel’s parents died in the Rwandan Genocide and he grew up on the streets going through trash for food scraps until humanitarian workers helped him get better and go to school He finished high school and his dream is to become a doctor, so he can give back to the comunity the way the humanitarian workers helped him. Donations helped him get through two years at college and he has been so happy with everything that he’s learning. He’s already had the chance to prove himself many times and even worked at a pharmacy last summer. But during the school year he doesn’t have the option to find a stable, well-paying job, so his only hope are donations! Under the cut is something he wrote for the GoFundMe.
PLEASE HELP BY DONATING AND REBLOGGING
"“My name is Daniel Niyonshuti. I am twenty years old and I am trying to pay for my university studies. I lost my parents during the Rwandan genocide of 1994. When I was very young I found myself on street and I grew on street but I am no longer a street kid. On street I lived in tough situation: I did not have food to eat sometimes, I carried loads and luggages for people, so that they may give a small money, but I also went to the gabagebin to pick the waste food. Because I did not have somewhere to sleep I slept under big bridge near round about but it was very hard to get sleep because I slept on sheets of old boxes and I was very afraid that one day the bridge will fall over me and it was very noisy. I did not have security. People found me on the street and beat me without reason, and sometimes they forced me to take drugs like marijuana and glue but all these made me unhappy and in pain. As time went on I saw children I growing up and going to school, and I wished to go school too, but It seemed to impossible to me. During 2003, I met volunteers through government who took me to school which was responsible for me then. The school provided me with food and a teacher gave me a room to sleep. At primary six, I did national examunation and I passed it. It allowed me to go to secondary school. For senior three, I did olevel examination and I passed it and was allowed to continue to A level where I did biology ,chemistry and physics. Last, I did A level examination and I was qualified to study General Nursing in University of Rwanda. I want to be a doctor. It is my dream, so that I may help others. Through this long journey I have seen the power of God and his mercy. He has been on my side - he is my confidence and my refuge. Please help me reach my dream.”
