Making Your Own Website

To follow up on the last reblog... for those HTML/CSS curious:

Free site hosting, community-based (if you want it), and a great place to start out and play around with coding your own site. I have a Supporter account there (very reasonable hosting cost) and host all of my HTML sites/blogs with them.

However, I keep backups of all my HTML files/images on my own computer - and backups of my backups!

In fact, I was able to recreate a FFIV fan website I last updated in 2004 (not a typo) because I still had my backup files from those days. All I had to do was upload the files to a host, do a little clean up, and there you go! Site restored from almost 20 years ago!

The tools, techniques and conclusions of diskmag archeology

Not exactly a text post, but here's a video recording from my talk from Evoke about how we turned age-old diskmags into something web-readable. Best enjoyed if you're into byte-level hackery, reverse-engineering, oldskool DOS culture, and self-indulgent projects no-one understands.

Sorry about the visual, I'm aware I look like someone left a kiwi in a bucket of drain cleaner for a week.

I also hope to get a post about my DOS demo up at some point, because it was a project I had a ton of fun with, and it was super-cathartic to work on.

Hell, just maintaining a media server on my local network that can stream to both the Roku and outside friends doing watchalongs is a headache and a half, even with software like Plex that does most of it out of the box. But it's a *really valuble* headache, because even point-and-click server administration skills are *vital* to any vision of fandom that starts with "host your own shit," which precedes owning the servers, even.

Like, there's "build your own shit" which is its own entire software-development Thing. But once the code's stable, someone still has to *host* it. And that's its own enormously broad range of possibilities and difficulty levels, from AO3 on through smaller custom apps, out-of-the-box software, highly moddable out-of-the-box software like Wordpress, custom plugins, etc. Shared hosting, VPS hosting, owning the servers, owning *a* dinky server that sits on your bookshelf.

I guess what I wanna say is that Coding The Platform Of The Future is a daunting undertaking, but oldskool fandom didn't run on an army of coders. It ran on a tiny number of coders and an army of self-taught cPanel sysadmins. Learning how to do that stuff is a *much* more approachable undertaking, and you can get results (in the form of Sites & Services That You Motherfucking Set Up) right away. Local media server. phpBB forum. Small fic archive. Self-hosted groupchat.

All valuable in themselves, and all building valuable skills--skills that any indie vision of the web will *need* one person per Midsize Gathering of People to be willing to acquire. (Bonus curmudgeon opinion: The crucial thing fandom needs is not a perfect platform tailored to all our needs, it's a 2020s equivalent of phpBB on shared hosting: a fit-for-purpose foundation that's highly moddable AND can be set up & maintained by a reasonably intelligent 15-year-old.)

Pulling this out of the replies because I agree and it’s good info.

Fandom still contains some people who know how to build things or how to organize things.

The latter does matter also, though only if you actually know how to organize in a way other people don’t. I’m talking looking at a fic archive you want to save (to pick an example that happens to me a lot) and breaking down the task into exactly what needs to be done so you can give a tech person highly specific and useful instructions. I’m talking actual organizational skills, not being the Idea Person with a pie-in-the-sky wishlist for a new social media site. (Fanexus, I’m looking at you.)

Anyway, we do have tech-y people in “our” kind of fandom, and if you hang around with infrastructure builders, you tend to run into them. They comment on posts like this.

What we don’t have, currently, is that one person per Midsize Gathering of People who’s willing to learn some low-level hosting skills.

What we also often lack is a sense that said midsize gathering is a community, not a public service where anyone who ever liked fanfic one time can instantly show up and make use of a public utility. To make oldschool internet shit work, people must be willing to venture out of their holes, make social contact at least a little, and kick out bad actors.

You gotta step up, whether to be a discord mod who actually moderates or to learn how to host and run a forum or whatever.

We don’t need huge numbers of people with astronomical tech skills, but we do need a better ratio of people who Do Stuff to people who want to be completely passive and only show up once the Stuff is already made.

I feel like part of the problem with building own infrastructure is also that even if someone wants to, people really don’t know how. It’s a big undertaking, and I feel like if I were to try I wouldn’t even be sure where to gather the knowledge and resources needed. I feel like less people these days just have the know-how to go into it with confidence.

Fewer people who like fanfic, proportionally, sure. That's because fanfic has become mainstream enough to have far more people interested and able to find it now instead of having huge barriers to entry, and we don't happen to overlap heavily with the tech industry.

Furries build new infrastructure all the time.

@bobaboard is new infrastructure.

I'm with you so far as it being a big undertaking, and it has gotten worse as our expectations have skyrocketed, but even so, it was always hard.

It was hard when we started OTW. It was hard when FFN was founded. It was hard when all the future oligarchs started Facebook and Amazon and every other inescapable feature of the modern internet.

All those things were founded by people. People have not fundamentally changed from ten or twenty years ago. No one is born knowing how to code.

Tech bros all have amazing—and horrifically unwarranted—confidence. Our community lacks confidence because we're a bunch of women and trans people who have been taught not to have it. It's a separate issue from tech skills.

The technical knowledge will depend on what you're hoping to build. AO3 links collections to waybacked copies of defunct archives are still infrastructure.

But yes, a whole new Home Of Fandom is tough. You have to worry about security practices and not leaking everyone's password.

If it's tech skills you want, talk to ms. boba, @essential-randomness. Go find current fandom coders and see what they're doing. Or pursue education in tech in general: the web is full of info.

Learning python will let you scrape websites. For some preservation projects, that's enough. Building the next big social media will take more.
