“On the evening of Aug. 11, 1973, DJ Kool Herc attended a block party in the South Bronx. Armed with two record players and a mixer, he created an extended percussive break while others rhymed over the beats. Hip-hop was born.”
Happy 50th Birthday, Hip Hop! To celebrate, I put together this @spotify playlist spanning the past 50 years of rap records. Old school. Modern. Whatever you like, you’ll probably find something to jam to on this playlist. Enjoy!

Know Your Hip-Hop Pioneers: Grandmaster Flash
A man whose radical skills in mixing reformed the turntable is, Grandmaster Flash. As the architect of the quick-mix theory, which is the extended play of the breakbeat, Flash's DJ sets are notorious for shaking crowds! His early days playing at house and block parties for big-time house rockers Kurtis Blow and Lovebug Starski led to his most famed act, Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five. Flash's impeccable technique for the art of djing has earned him a place in the holy triad of hip-hop.

Throwback: R.I.P. DJ Polo
Throwback: R.I.P. DJ Polo @LEGENDARYDJPOLO
I was saddened to learn of DJ Polo‘s death yesterday — especially in light of the fact that his former partner Kool G. Rap celebrated his 56th birthday last week.
DJ Polo’s work with Kool G. Rap is legendary and influential. And it’s worth checking out because it holds up in a way that a lot of old school hip-hop doesn’t always hold up.
Long live DJ Polo!
