A magnet for adventure tourists and nature lovers, Ohiopyle State Park sprawls across twenty thousand square acres of steeply-sloped wild lands on the flanks of the Youghiogheny River Gorge in Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands. The Great Allegheny Passage bike trail runs through the heart of the park, which also anchors a thriving whitewater rafting industry. I fortunately live within a short drive of the park, so a day hike is always in the cards. Especially on a beautiful Memorial Day holiday.
From top: black raspberry (Rubus occidentalis), an aggressive colonizer with delicious fruit coveted by humans and animals alike; longstyle sweetroot (Osmorhiza longistylis), also known as anise root, because its roots have a licorice-like flavor; Indian cucumber (Medeola virginiana), easily identified by its two tiers of whorled leaves and odd, pendulous flowers; and speckled wood lily (Clintonia umbellulata), also known as white Clintonia or black-bead lily, a close relative of yellow Clintonia (Clintonia borealis), which tends to occur at higher elevations in Central Appalachia.

top 5 hiking trails !
OKAY SO
I can't rank these!! But these are maybe 5 of my most beloved.
Queen's Garden/Navajo Loop in Bryce Canyon NP
Geology 10/10. You can actually wander through the hoodoos with this trail. I recommend taking the switchbacks at the end rather than starting there because at least your ascent will be slightly more gentle and predictable that way!
Deer Mountain, Rocky Mountain NP
Probably the most rewarding hike I've done. I'm really proud of myself for it. 1400 feet of elevation on a 90ºF day was no joke, but the views were so worth it. And now I can say I've climbed a mountain :)
Nymph/Dream/Emerald/Haiyaha lakes, RMNP
Okay I've done a few iterations of these trails now over the years and frankly the way up to Dream Lake is the best. Photo under the cut. Don't do this during spring melt because it SUCKSSSSSSS but when it's either solid snow or fully melted, well, I love you trail. Take crampons.
Meadow Run/Great Gorge/GAP, Ohiopyle State Park
I can't pick just one trail here but I'm lumping them because you can hike them all sequentially. Cascades and natural water slides and waterfalls and PA's loveliest whitewater. Even better in the winter when there are almost no people around, the mountain laurels are still green, everything is covered in thick ice, and crampons let you prance around like an elf.
Moraine and Glacier Loop, Moraine State Park
Another favorite state park back home. This trail especially in the late spring is just the best. You get lakeside, you get rocky switchbacks, you get ridgeline views, you get wildflowers. Plus I saw a really cool bone here once.
hi on the way up to dream lake
icy cucumber falls ohiopyle beloved
bryce canyon bucket list hike for real!!!! would love to go back here someday
deer mountain summit !

A Few Popular Hiking Destinations in Pennsylvania
More than 61 million Americans enjoy the physical and psychological benefits of hiking each year, ranging from improved heart health to reduced stress levels. The United States National Park Service reports additional benefits, including enhanced muscle and bone strength, a lower chance of respiratory complications, and decreased anxiety. Americans living in Pennsylvania have a range of quality hiking trails to choose from. These trails support several outdoor activities, such as birding and biking.
Bird-watching enthusiasts should consider a trip to Presque Isle State Park in Erie. The park has 11 miles of hiking trails that offer beautiful views of the state’s only seashore. The trails pass the National Natural Landmark, a frequent landing spot for migrating birds.
Hikers interested in a multi-day trek should research the Quehanna Trail in Penfield. This 72.6-mile loop connects the Moshannon and Elk State Forests and offers some of the state’s most remote nature experiences. The trail passes through multiple conservation areas, including Parker Dam and the Marion Brooks Natural Area.
Groups that do not have time for the Quehanna Trail but still desire a hiking challenge can take on the Falls Trail System at Ricketts Glen State Park. The park’s trail system consists of 26 miles covering a 13,193-acre region, most of which are more challenging. However, the rewards are worth it, with the Falls Trail System providing views of over 20 waterfalls, including the 94-foot Ganoga Falls.
For a simple day on the trail, hikers in Pennsylvania should consider trails at Pine Grove Furnace State Park in Gardners, part of the Michaux State Forest outside Chambersburg. Set against a mountainous backdrop, the park’s four miles of looping trails circle Laurel Lake and Fuller Lake. Although Pine Grove Furnace State Park is an ideal destination for hikers searching for a standard or easy day, more experienced outdoors enthusiasts can take on the Pole Steeple Trail. This steep hike culminates in a panoramic view of the entire park and surrounding forest.
Despite the region’s copious hiking trails, Pennsylvania is home to just one national forest: Allegheny National Forest. Located in Marienville, the forest received federal recognition in 1923. The North Country National Scenic Trail serves as the longest of the state’s three designated National Scenic Trails and, at 96.3 miles, accounts for nearly half of the forest’s hiking trails.
Cyclists can head to the Jake Rocks Epic Mountain Bike Trail System in Warren, a system of stack-loop mountain biking trails in the Allegheny National Forest. Riders at different experience levels can find appropriate trails.
Few views in the state rival those found at the heights of the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail in New Florence. The 70-mile Trail includes difficult sections, including challenging climbs and long, flat segments. Hikers at every skill level should schedule a day on the trail at Ohiopyle State Park, the site of countless waterfalls and scenic overlooks.
Hiking enthusiasts near Pittsburgh can find suburban hiking opportunities on the Montour Trail, a 63-mile, multi-use system spanning Coraopolis to Clairton. Other popular trails in Pennsylvania include the Great Allegheny Passage, the Heritage Rail Trail, and the D&H Trail at Lehigh Gorge State Park.

top 5 hiking spots
💚💚 Ok in no particular order
Moraine State Park - Glacier Ridge or Moraine/Glacier Loop. Love the switchbacks, and once you finish the climb, getting to walk along the top of a ridge 🥰
Rocky Mountain National Park - Nymph, Dream, Emerald, and Haiyaha Lakes; Deer Mountain. Hoping my ankles can make it at least to Emerald this year.
Bryce Canyon NP - Queen’s Garden/Navajo Loop. Unreal place
Ohiopyle State Park, any trail, but I’m partial to the Cascades and the Great Gorge loop. So many good rocks and waterfalls and fossils and plants. One of my favorite places on earth and I miss it so much
Arches NP - Delicate Arch trail. Hands down one of the most fun hikes ever. Leaving before sunrise and getting there as the sun peeks out. Also the rock hill that kicked my ass. But goddamn
