"Japanese ogre" by Greg Bell from D&D Supplement I: Greyhawk, TSR, 1976. The Greyhawk supplement introduced rules for "ogre magi" or "Japanese ogres," clearly based on the oni of folklore, though the term oni was not used at this time.

My Theories / Thoughts on the new HtP audio log
Spoilers under the cut! Don't read unless you listened to the ghoul lore episode!! I will know!!!! (also massive post)
okay there is. so insanely much to talk about with this audio log. I have so many theories and thoughts, but I'll just share my main ones in no specific order.
Keep in mind that I'm no WoD scholar, so some info could be wrong or be interpreted by the Ogre Poppenang team differently. A lot of this info is coming from the White Wolf wiki.
The Lost Sons
I have a lot of theories on who the sons D lost were. My actual theory is that we'll never know so it remains mysterious. However, endlessly theorizing is fun so: 1.) D says that he lost a son and that it wasn't the first time. So we know at least two sons are gone. Assuming he has only lost two sons, they could be stand ins for the two lost Primarchs from 40k.
For those that don't know a lot about 40k, two of the emperor's sons are 'lost'. Thier names are never said and as far as I know their exact fates never confirmed (but assumedly killed). This goes with my actual theory of not actually knowing what happened.
2.) Anton. During the Australia story, D mentions Anton offhandly. I agree with @sensarna that Anton is a stand in for Angron. We don't know the exact details of that hunt so there is no way to be sure. Biggest point against this is that D gets very intense about saying "Markus' Brother's" name, so I doubt he would mention it offhandedly.
3.) I want to avoid using things not in the series but I'll be drawing on primarch fates from 40k for this. Fates are defiantly not one to one since Door is alive/has both hands, Horus is alive/a horse, and so on. But I immediately thought of Jaghatai Khan when hearing the Australia story.
Simplified for non-40k fans, Jaghatai is supposedly fighting space elf pirates in the space elf dimension, trapped in its endlessly twisting paths. In HtP, this could be interpreted as Jaghatai being trapped in a changeling freehold. Other primarchs are also trapped/lost in places (like Leman Russ and Vulkan) but Jaghatai is involved with the closest thing 40k has to cruel fae.
4.) The previous lost son(s) was not lost as in killed (necessarily) but lost as in changed. This has nothing to do with the Australia story but I'd be surprised if Markus was D's only supernatural(?) son. Leman is probably a werewolf or a gangrel, Lorgar could be possessed by a demon or a nephandi mage, Vulkan could be a wraith constantly possessing people, Roboute could be a changeling lost to banality, anything.
Markus and the Thing (1982)
We know a few things about Markus contacting the unknown force (which I will refer to as the Thing). The Thing is not a 'monster' or a 'demon'.
The Thing is described as or something from the Abyss (with a capital A, even). The Abyss is portrayed differently in every WoD game line, the descriptions conveyed by how that game's supernatural would interact with it. Its a cursed sea to Wraiths, a realm of sensory deprivation to Demons, and the realm of paradoxes and unreality to Magi just to name a few.
D himself says that he doesn't know exactly what it is or how exactly Markus contacted it, so he may be wrong in saying it is/from the Abyss. However, we do know from the Kevin audiolog that D was part of a hunt that killed a Lasombra Methuselah, whose clan has Abyss powers. I'm willing to give D the benefit of the doubt and assume that the Thing is related the the Abyss.
So, what the hell is it?
1.) While kind of a copout, we probably won't ever know its exact nature. The fifth edition Hunter book is full of creatures that don't fit into any neat classifications. It could be something totally unique to this story.
2.) While also unlikely, it could be a Neverborn. They are a major part of Wraith. Neverborn are forces of primordial destruction, endlessly slumbering while they wait for the end of everything. Their minds are the source of the Specters' hivemind, commands carried out through dreams. The 'million eyes' Markus caught a glimpse of could have been an endless hivemind trying to destroy the universe suddenly becoming aware of a lone child.
The big points against this is that getting into the world of the living is difficult for any single wraith/specter, more so for a whole group of them. Maybe whatever ritual Markus did made it easier, we don't know.
3.) According to D, Markus has had a 'sorcerous aptitude'. This immediately made me think of an Avatar. Avatars in mage are a kind of spiritual guide to Magi, always pushing them to realize their potential. Since Magi can have literally any paradigm (the way a mage understands magik), their Avatar can be literally anything.
I'm unsure if Avatars can manifest for anyone aside the mage, but during an Awakening anything could happen. From the picture of the Thing (assuming the photo is diegetic) we know it was visible. If not interrupted, maybe Markus could've even stopped the fae. Or he could've been consumed by overwhelming power and died.
I think this is best supported theory, especially since D has no idea how Markus did it. Markus didn't have to know how to do it. He just needed to believe that it'd work.
4.) Lastly is the most closely related to Changelings. Fomorians. The oldest nightmares of the Dreaming. They are too alien to describe properly. Whatever Markus was doing, he thought he was "channeling a rival power in the fae court". If we're assuming the main power of the court was Seelie, this would mean he was using Unseelie (or possibly Shadow Court) power. Fomorians are supposedly the predecessors to the Unseelie, so Markus might've tapped into something much older than intended.
So why isn't this my main theory? Fomorians fit the physical description (as in, indescribable), are related to the enemy the Family was hunting at the time, and are esoteric enough that D could possibly not know about them.
Because as far as I know, The Dreaming not associated with the Abyss in any way. Its quite the opposite, since its the place of dreams and nightmares. Where the Dreaming is overstimulation, the Abyss is deprivation. That is my interpretation at least. This theory would have to assume that D was just wrong when name dropping the capital A Abyss, which doesn't seem right to me.
The Funny Drink
So the whole Draught thing. This post is long and rambling enough as is, so my theories will be brief.
We know that the draught can bestow any of the following. Strength, Speed, Endurance, or (uniquely for Norfolk) Domination. D says that the Domination one could "give victims complex orders that can be carried out without question."
I think the two lines of thinking are the ones brought up by @possiblylando , mainly that the domination draught is a red herring or that it was used to make someone attack Occam.
The other draughts could also be in use instead, assuming the Ghoul only has one.
If the person that took out Occam wasn't very strong, the Strength draught could give them the edge to overpower him.
Whoever killed Fatigue could've used the Speed draught and cleaned up/fled quickly after making him suddenly explode.
More theory than example but Brok takes a punch from D in chapter 4. D says "Your papa could never take a punch like that.", which could be the Endurance draught at work.
Summary
What a good audio log. Can't wait for the next episode!

Kieran from Pokemon Scarlet and Violet would turn into a witch in Puella Magi Madoka Magica!
Cause of Witchification: Was already regarded as an outcast by most of the peers around him, he initially latched on to the player and the fabled "ogre", who was often depicted as the villain in the tale of the Loyal Three, as a beacon of hope. Unfortunately, after overhearing his grandfather revealing the truth behind the Loyal Three and the so-called "monstrous" ogre- and him begging both his sister and the player not to tell him, he believed that the reason why they left him out of this is due to the fact that he was nothing more than a beast- just like how the rest of Kitakami saw Ogerpon, especially with the reveal that it had revealed itself to both Carmine and the player, and not Kieran.
In a desperate attempt at befriending the ogre, he had acquired the teal mask that Ogerpon had dropped during its intial encounter with Carmine and the player; holding on to it and refusing to let go until the player had to defeat him in a pokemon battle. The shock of betrayal and jealousy had turned into an aura of resentment so powerful and toxic that it was akin to that of the poisonous Pecharunt; reviving the Loyal Three from their slumber and allowing them to cause havoc amongst the village once more.
While Ogerpon and the player chased them out, Kieran stayed behind to fix its reputation amongst the people of Kitakami and reveal the truth behind the Lousy Three they had revered for generations. Despite that, Ogerpon had chosen the player to be its trainer; shattering his heart once more by this sense of betrayal and filling its cracks with envy towards the person he believed had ruined his life, the player. After their final battle and watching the player catch Ogerpon, he locked himself in his room and vowed to get stronger- he vowed to take the player down to the depths with him, even if it took every fiber of his being...
Over time, he had turned into an exhausted, bitter, angry shell of his own self; the champion of the Blueberry Academy possessing a crown of thorns and a venomous tongue. Not a hint of hope were behind those eyes- only the hollow pit of bitterness and despair were reflected within them-
At least, that way, nobody could hurt him ever again- he was strong enough to defeat that wretch once and for all and take back his life... until the player waltzed into his line of sight once more, this time for the title of champion...

Warhammer Gaslamp: Peoples of the Old World
Tumblr media
(For Introduction, see here; for Imperial Society, see here; for Geopolitics, see here.)
While the Old World of 2725 IC is dominated by the nations of Men, the non-human species of the world are by no means vanished - although all have seen enormous amounts of change over the last two hundred years.
Although they still maintain their traditional alliance with the Empire of Man, the Dawi of the Old World suffered badly from their pyrrhic victories in the Skaven and Greenskin Wars, to the point where they have begun a slow, inexorable demographic decline - not helped by increasing assimilation into the Empire. Increasingly, the Dawi have begun to coalesce around the master plan of the Great Reckoning, an effort to avenge every single Grudge in the Dammaz Kron in one fell swoop through the creation of an army of 100,000 Slayers. When the last of the Grudges has been satisfied, the sages of Dwarfkind believe that the Ancestor Gods will return and restore their people to their former glory.
Proving that it is truly an ill wind that blows no one any good, the shift in the Aethyr mentioned earlier had a profound influence on the Asur. With the increase in the concentration of Aethyric energy around, Asur born since 2594 have universally developed psykic abilities seemingly independent of their access to the Winds of Khaos, such that the younger generation now primarily speak mind-to-mind, can move themselves and objects with a thought, and much more that was once the exclusive ability of magi. Among many of the Asur, this is seen as a sign of the gods' continual favor, but these new abilities will need to be pressed into service sooner rather than later, as the blessed isle of Ulthuan is gradually sliding beneath the waves....
While their territories in Laurelorn have shrunken dramatically, the territories of the Asrai in Athel Loren remain quite strong in Bretonnia thanks in no small part to their political influence on Forest Law in L'Ancien Régime. As part of an increased level of caution (or paranoia), the Spellsingers embarked in a campaign of educating the entirety of their population in how to magically transport themselves between the remaining forests of the Old World and the spiritual dimension of Underhill, where magic remains strong and the verdant world untouched by hands of men, and to use the Glamour to move undetected in the human world.
[From the 9th Edition Imperial Encyclopedia]: Halflings (noun). A malevolent subspecies of mutant, destroyed in the Great Gene-Purge of 2614.
Life for the Vampire Counts has become increasingly more dangerous and complex. Driven from their seat of power in a vicious war that left much of Sylvania a faintly glowing wasteland of bomb craters and barbed wire, the survivors live on the run from the Imperial Plasmic Survey and the Schwarzmänner, although some vampires and thralls alike can manage to stay one step ahead via falsified blood samples and living in masquerade in the teeming throngs of urban society. Many of the surviving vampires have developed wealthy clients from among the nobility and the haut bourgeoisie, who are willing to risk the attentions of the state in exchange for infusions that extend their lifespans by decades. At the same time, the Vampire Counts are learning how to play politics by Imperial rules...
The Old World has changed, but the Greenskins have not. Although banished beyond the World's Edge Mountains, they still practice their traditional ways of WAAAGH! and generally making a mess of things. However, they have adapted to the age of gunpowder by trading with the Ogres of the East for the 'splody stuff, from the Orkish love of really big shootas and the Goblin fascination with bombs. The Greenskins might wear top hats and call their warleaders Nobz now, but they are still the mad, anarchic bastards who refuse to die.
Despite their defeat in the wars with the dwarfs and the mysterious explosion that engulfed Skavenblight in 2573 IC, the Underempire of the Skaven has adapted to their new circumstances in new and strange ways. While increasing urbanization has allowed the Skaven to spread through the sewers and subway systems of the Empire, they face new competition from the "Untervolk" and the increasingly impressive efforts of the human Technomancers. So instead the Skaven have allied with the Slaaneshi to sell warpstone dust drugs to the stupid stupid man-things, using the financial proceeds and the insidious long-term effects of warpstone dust to weaken humanity from within.

"I'm pretty strong- but there are a few things that are even difficult for me to lift-I usually don't pull them out unless I need to."
"C'mon, Papa!" Aya begged. "Can't you please show them??? PLEEEAAASEEEE???"
Kenji chuckled. "Alright, alright, sure! Why not!"

Tomo said in a low whisper. "All you need to know is that most people who live here wouldn't think twice about killing my daughter. I'm sure you can put the rest of the puzzle pieces together yourself."

Miu snapped his fan shut with a sigh. "Honestly, it might be preferred if you stay, rather than leave- but I suppose you can go, as long as you don't tell anyone about us, especially any of the residents on the island."

Elf: It's an ogre! Wizard: How big? Elf: Average, I'd say. Wizard: Say 18 hits. Does an average of 5.5 hits per melee round Cleric: But what if it's an Ogre Magi? Dwarf: ON THE SECOND LEVEL? Don't be a twit!!! Wizard: Lessee, Muriel does about 4.5 points damage per round. Elf: Right! Wizard: Gromel has 17 strength and . . . Dwarf: 18! Wizard: has a +3 Warhammer, so he does 10 hits per round. Marius only has a mace, and does but 3.5 hits . . . Cleric: But I'm only AC 4, and I've only got 7 hits! Dwarf: You go in, or I bust your head! Wizard: and I'll throw Magic Missile, doing an average of 4.5 hits. That's 22.5 per round, and he averages only a quarter of that! Elf: All set? Cleric: But he's on a better table!

Durotar's quiet was like no other, Orizhki thought. Neither night nor morning, but the starry, early moment when the sky opened wide and the wind swept the heat from the ground. When you could dig your toes into the dirt and hear the land north of Sen'jin awaken, begin to sing: the snuffling of boars, the breeze through the silverleaf, and, far away, the slow wash of ocean water across the beach.
When she had been small, her sister had taken her up onto these hills and turned her chin up to the sky. Long years and distance lay between them now, but out here now Orizhki thought she could all but feel her sister's calloused fingers on her cheek, smell her furs and leathers and peacebloom tea.
It was sobering, really. As a child, her sister had stood so tall in Orizhki's eyes that she had served as her north star. Nowadays Orizhki had to wonder what it was that made grown-ups shine like giants in children's eyes, if there was perhaps some magic that the rest had forgot to teach her. She felt lost and unequal to each task that passed between her hands, and she lay awake at night wondering if she was still a child herself underneath it all, understanding nothing.
"Mom?"
Orizhki stirred from her thoughts and looked down. Garrlok had come over to her knee, his one eye turned up to her.
He, too, slept little. A year ago he had come to Orizhki as a foundling from Brackenwall, and none from the Stonemaul clan knew who had left him in the marsh. Matron Battlewail had sent a missive to her about the boy, knowing then — as did most of the tribe, the busybodies — that Orizhki was childless.
"He cannot sleep at night and sneaks out to read, much like someone I used to know," she had written, underlining someone in a long, dark slant that ticked up towards the end. "It has been some time since you took a wife. Krog and Draz'Zilb remember your brave deeds and have asked for you by name. Come and meet the boy."
They had sent the Brackenwall flightmaster, Shardi, up with the child by wind rider, and she had lingered in Orgrimmar to speak with Orizhki and the matron. It was Shardi who had sewn Garrlok his little book, a colorful replica of a mage's tome with a quilted cover and a handful of embroidered linen pages. Garrlok had been using it as a pillow when Orizhki had first arrived at the orphanage.
"I would take him in myself, if I had the means," Shardi had said regretfully over a steaming cup of tea; she and Orizhki had walked to Miwana's Longhouse that day to talk out of earshot of the little ones. "He likes magic, Orizhki. He keeps insisting that poor Tosamina read him the same story about the ogre magi and the magic wolf night after night."
"I know that one," Orizhki had told her. "My sister told me it many a time herself."
Shardi had given her a knowing look. "Maybe it's faaaaate."
"You just want a lok'amon to sing."
"Faaaaaate, Orizhki!"
"But maybe it's not fate," Orizhki had said. "Surely Ekinka and I are too young to be mothers — too young, too stupid. Are there no ready women in the Marsh?"
"You know the plight of the Stonemaul," Shardi had said, and her earlier playfulness had faded with a shake of her head. "And with all those spiders near, well, you've seen them."
"Mm."
"Zanara swears she's seen them make a meal out of a grown orc. Garrlok would be just a snack."
Orizhki had still not forgotten those marsh spiders. She had faced demons, the dead, and dragons all in battle, yet it was those stupid darkmist spiders that woke her in the night. She wondered from time to time if Garrlok had seen them, too; if they crept into his dreams, too. It had been a year since she and Ekinka had taken the boy in, and he still struggled to sleep.
It was why she had thought to take him up on the hills just outside Razor Hill at this hour to see the stars. The two had flown out on her magic carpet, Garrlok still with his plush book, oft-mended and faded by use, but Orizhki had to hold him by the hand until they had touched down safely to the ground. Once he had clung to her leg everywhere they had gone, his face buried in the fur of her boots. Now he had already scampered up the rocks.
"I can get all the way up this rock!" he called back to her now, waving. "And this one, Hand-Mom! And this one!"
"Be careful, kiddo," Orizhki said. She sent her staff up ahead and closed the distance between Garrlok and her with a few moments of careful climbing.
"And this one!"
He was bouncing in place when she gained the topmost rock and drew level with him, more slowly now. For all the knowledge and wisdom of age, her knees had nothing on his.
"Everyone's asleep!" he told her excitedly, pointing at the roofs visible below them. "They're all beddy-bye. Like Song-Mom."
They had first taught Garrlok to tell them apart when he needed to by their clans; Ekinka with the Warsong and Orizhki herself with the Shattered Hand.
"They are indeed all in bed, Song-Mom included." Orizhki said. She knelt to rub a smudge from his cheek with her thumb. "She's been very sleepy lately. You've been very good to not wake her up to play with you while she's resting."
"She's sad sometimes," Garrlok said. He looked down at his feet, raised a chubby little hand to touch Orizhki's own. "It makes me sad too."
"I know, peanut. Sometimes grown-ups are sad," Orizhki said quietly. She moved her hand from his cheek to his chin, and gently turned his face back up again. "But it's okay to be sad. Look, all of the stars are out tonight."
"Wow ..."
She let him slip out of her hands and look up, up, up to the violet stretch of stars.-
"You know," she said, settling a bit more on the hill, "I once fell down one of these hills when I was small myself. Tore up my leggings and both my knees. Gave my sister a right scare."
"Your sister Takta?"
"Mhm."
He was still looking around. "Was she mad?"
"No. No, she was proud. Takta said that I could only fall down that far because I made it up the rock further than I had ever done before."
"Like me!"
"Yes. Like you." Orizhki smiled, though it still brought her a measure of pain. "Okay, well, maybe she was a bit mad about the leggings. But you can't let leggings stand between you and adventure, Garrlok."
"Was Song-Mom mad?"
"No, I didn't know your other mom then."
She watched him walk a few steps with his head bent back, gazing at the peaks and clouds about them.
"We're up so high, Mom," he said in wonder.
"You bet we are," she said. "This is the best place in the world."
He beamed at her, all sorrows quite forgotten. "We can see everything from up here!"
"Oh, kiddo," she said. "Yeah. You bet we can."

Note
is krogurr jealous that:
1. ogres are bigger, prettier, and have fatter asses than orcs?
2. ogre-magi can cast spells but orcs never figured this out?
3. an ogre’s smell is far more enchanting than orc stink?
krogurr respects his orge brethren and understands that their aesthetic is equally appealing to orcs, not in opposition to it but instead they compliment each other. like oysters and pearls. he's also beating you to death with a fucking hammer.
