What has really happened to the American economy?

Last week, former President Obama claimed credit for today’s great economy, saying that it started under him and that Trump just carried it on.  How he could do this and maintain any credibility is beyond me.  For 8 years after he was elected, the American economy bumped along, hampered by high taxes, stricter regulation and offshoring of our industries.  It just shows you how resilient Americans are even when facing difficulties and government resistance.

Then, yesterday, there was a story in the Wall Street Journal about how millennials were actually staying with employers longer rather than job hopping. This prompted a friend of mine, a former President of several companies which did business all over the world, to write about how he saw the American economy.  What he says makes a lot of sense, and I summarize it here:

“Tech companies need a far greater quantity of workers as the economy increased demand.  There are less lay-offs, and less part time (previously used because Obamacare encouraged part-time workers).  There is a surge from employers to provide retirement plans, 401k’s, ESOPs and the like and these plans are soaring because the stock market is going up and workers are seeing them increase.”

“Romper rooms in tech companies are decreasing because they need the space for more offices.  They are starting to look like companies rather than day care.”

“Millennials have never had to work in a strong economy, so they don’t know how it works. They never cared about long term jobs because there were not many of them to find.  They lived in slow economies with incentives to only hire part time people.  A glut of foreign workers were brought into the country to take their jobs for lower pay.  No wonder they are Sanders supporters.”

“Now that corporate taxes are competitive to other countries, businesses can and are hiring Americans and saving shipping costs of sending over raw materials and shipping back finished product.  Those savings are equal to the savings from the cheap labor available overseas. The reason companies moved operations overseas was because of our high taxes.  Instead of paying 35-40%, they now pay 21-25%, a hell of a difference. The politicians and news media lied to the American people and told us it was because of cheap labor.  That was BS. “

“Try to teach people who never saw electricity to put the right color wires in the right spot.  Try to explain the beauty of American home furniture to people who never saw beauty in furniture and decor of a single family home.  They have never seen a single family home or took pride in a home.”

This is a new twist on the outsourcing argument and one that I think has a lot of merit.  Look around you and see if this is not true. 

One other thing that I know from my experience at the Department of Energy.  When I was there in the early 90′s we imported about 55% of our oil products.  Now we are a net exporter of oil and gas.  Just think about how much of our money then went to other countries and their ��leaders”.  Just go to Dubai or Saudia Arabia to see what they spent it on, while our infrastructure is crumbling.  Iran spent it on oursourcing terrorism in the name of Islam. Now that money is staying here and is going into the pockets of our people and our government.  Trillions of dollars per year.  That alone is a huge boost to our economy.
