happy WBW!! so, Nadia's a tarot reader, right?? does tarot reading in their world work the same as in ours? do the readings end up with more literal presentations than they sometimes do irl? and have you made any extra/setting-specific cards for their deck??

(apologies if any of this is weirdly phrased - im not super familiar with tarot to begin with, and im excited to see how it's incorporated into Nadia's world/story!!)

Now that I've had my golden retriever moment. The answer. Thanks for joining me once again @magic-is-something-we-create I always love your questions.

I haven't actually used tarot in ASMLP yet tbh but of any of my characters, save for Dakota, Nadia is the one that makes the most sense tbh. Should add a scene of it maybe 🤔 Anyway.

Tarot in this universe is... similar? The Invention and origins aren't quite the same (was a card game that got ascribed meaning irl,,, haven't thought about the origins much in this universe). As this is a magical world the decks are actually magical tools and are used as such...they tend to be anchored to deities post-Ascension.

In Nadia's case, this is about as religious as she gets. Do I know what deity she aligns with? No, still have to explore that. But in her case--and in most cases post-Ascension, really--it is their means of communing with and getting answers from the divine. I relate it heavily to my own tarot use, which while CAN be public (hence why I did the Follower event and even offer readings if people throw me a couple bucks), is more often used for my own communication with the gods I worship.

Pre-Ascension/during Godsfall/after Orasion they weren't TOO popular and rarely used because magic of all sorts was still incredibly nebulous and often meant persecution (because it most often meant you were Luricae OR contracted to one). That said, it does get SOME use. Dakota in TWEfA even uses a deck and actually HAS scenes where she uses it to help decide her next steps.

The actual construction is mildly different from the real life counterpart. The decks can be made by one artistically inclined and attuned to their deitiy's voice, but is more often commissioned or passed down, though as the number of gods increase and the number of prophets in turn, tarot is getting more widespread use. A lot of the artwork, in turn, is based on personal discretion, aesthetic, and divine insight.

In terms of format, there's still a split between major and minor Arcana, but I did combine the kings and queens of court cards and renamed a lot of the Majors so they're more archetype based to me. The renamed list of majors is as follows:

The Sage (combines High Priestess and elements of Hierophant)

The Regent (combined Emperor and Empress)

The Master (reworked Hierophant)

The Twins (replaces the Lovers, puts less stock in the "love" part of this card and more on the "choices" element)

The Charioteer (basically The Chariot)

The Conqueror (renamed Strength)

The Hermit (same)

The Fate (renamed Wheel of Fortune)

The Arbiter (renamed Justice)

The Hanged One (renamed Hanged Man)

The Revolutionist (renamed Death)

The Scales (renamed Temperance)

The Monster (renamed Devil)

The Destroyer (renamed Tower)*

The Star (same)*

The Illusionist (renamed Moon)

The Sun (same)*

The Harbinger (renamed Judgement)

The World (same)*

idk if this is an unpopular opinion but while I love Nadia’s masquerade costume a lot for aesthetic alone, it really doesn’t fit her character, familiar, and or Patron and it. Bugs me ? lmao

To further elaborate:

excluding her hunting outfit (which I personally think is meant to mirror Lucio as she was literally hunting him) and her. Naked sprite, Nadia’s color-scheme is pretty light, the main colors being light purples, jade greens, and gold. This is reflected in both Chandra and the High Priestess’s designs:

The red and black primarily appear in the HP’s face and talons, but her main colors (especially in her clothes) are also similar lavenders —> pink gradients like Chandra.

Unlike with her hunting outfit, I don’t really see the reasoning why the devs would want her colors for the masquerade to mimic Lucio’s so much. The whole point is her severing herself from her ties to him. In all honesty, her outfit, feathers included, work much better for Julian, and the outfits weirdly look like they’re meant to go together:

Julian really isn’t present for most of her route, so again, I don’t see the reason why to really pair them like that together in such a way.

I would say all the others (excluding Lucio’s, I also feel like his outfit didn’t really reflect him much at all too) really represent themself and or their patron in some sort of way. Looking @ Nadia’s outfit, you would assume her familiar is a raven or another black bird like Julian, but it’s a white owl and so is her patron ? lmao

Idk! Food for thought. Again, I love the outfit as a stand-alone, but I think it doesn’t really. Reflect Nadia as much as it is just very hot LMAO it could work very well for her reverse ending, but not in the neutral state of the route tbh

Alright, since I’ve only seen some people touch on this, I thought I’d upload a little explanation of Nadia’s sisters. This diagram is a pretty simple diagram of the seven main chakra--or energy points--in the body. (There’s a lot more than seven and I’m willing to bet Nadia’s mother and father are based off the two more common out-of-body chakra, the Soul Star and the Earth Star. We’ll see, though.

Nazali -- Root Chakra

Physical needs, our connection to our physical bodies and environment, practicality, being grounded. Nazali is probably the most practical of all of Nadia’s sisters so far. Them being a doctor and having that fanny pack because of how convenient it is rather than the aesthetic of it makes a lot of sense. 

Navra -- Sacral Chakra

Creative expression, sensuality, sexuality, pleasure, sexual pleasure, and even more than all that-- expressing your creative and sexual self without guilt or judgement. Navra is the most expressionate of Nadia’s sisters and by far the most sensual. 

Nahara -- Solar Plexus Chakra

Motivation, will power, control, determination, personal strength. Nahara has the most discipline of all of Nadia’s sisters and from appearances I’d say she’s the strongest physically of all of them, along with having an unwavering amount of personal strength to push through any situation. 

Nasmira -- Heart Chakra

Love, patience, kindness, how you view yourself, how you view others. Nasmira is a very kind and loving sister who always takes a compassionate approach to dealing with Nadia or really anyone else in the game. When something bad is happening, she’s the one that’s concerned and worried, that’s wishing everything well, that’s treating everyone with unconditional love. 

Natiqa -- Throat Chakra

Truth, verbal expression, speaking honestly and openly, speaking your mind in a way that other people understand in the way you intend for it to come across. I really love what they did with Natiqa, because sometimes speaking your truth doesn’t always have to be truthful, per se, as long as you point gets across. There’s one point where she doesn’t want to engage in a specific topic so she says she sees Nadia across the hall and just leaves, and everyone else is like, “...Nadia wasn’t over there??” Nope, but Natiqa didn’t want to deal with it and she was being honest with herself in not wanting to talk about it so she left the situation. It’s also hinted that she’s a diplomat or ambassador of some kind.

Nadia -- Third Eye Chakra

Perception, intuition, seeing the unseen, possibility. C’mon, her mark is even ON her third eye and her patron is the High Priestess. All throughout the story she’s had a keen perception. She’s learning to trust her intuition more and open that back up. She sees the possibility in what Vesuvia could become under her rule even if no one else can. 

Nafizah -- Crown Chakra

Connection to higher divinity, connection to high self, connection to source, the way we receive information from the divine, recognition in our own inner divinity, wisdom, and importance. Her turtle sits right on her crown and gives her information. People with a very open crown chakra often seem very spaced out and lost in their own world, and when they tune back in to their physical surroundings, they do with a startling amount of intensity and a strange bit of knowledge that seems to come from nowhere. They usually don’t notice how odd their behavior is and if they do, they’re so high up in the clouds they don’t care how other people perceive them.

the reason i have a lot of screencaps of shit julian says but not a lot of shit nadia says is cause nadia constantly blows me the fuck away so much i forget to take caps. the whole scene in the tower was peak lance pandering I absolutely fuckin loved it. nadia arrived at the apprentice’s door that night cause they asked her to. she met them before they met her and they met her before she met them. she breaks out of the tower cause she doesn’t have to do it alone. the ‘false reality shatters under the force of a steeled resolve’ trope. the constant falling just for the aesthetic symbolism of it all. washing up on the shore of the high priestess’ temple to immediately rush into the arms of the present nadia.
