Oerlikon Barmag at the UTECH Asia / PU China
Polyurethane has become an integral part of our daily lives, whether in the construction industry, in leisure activities, in the manufacture of furniture, or in numerous other applications. The precision gear pumps from Oerlikon Barmag, which will be presented at this year's UTECH Asia / PU China 2024 in Shanghai (booth 230), impress with customized solutions for demanding tasks in the chemical industry. They increase the productivity of the often complex manufacturing processes for this wide range of applications.
Components for all cases
Oerlikon Barmag pumps reliably handle demanding processes in PUR applications, in the chemical, plastics, or paint and lacquer industries. One of the greatest challenges lies in the highly accurate and reliable metering of toxic or low-viscosity media. With the GM and GA series and the associated components, Oerlikon Barmag presents the optimum equipment for these applications. "The magnetic couplings used specifically in the GM series fulfill the expectations of the manufacturing industry with their low maintenance requirements. In addition, they meet the high safety standards of the chemical industry, e.g. for compliance with clean air (“TA-Luft”) regulations," explains Andreas Heitzer, Sales Director of the Pumps business unit at Oerlikon Barmag. "If personal maintenance of a standard sealing is not possible or only possible to a limited extent due to a critical medium, magnetic couplings are the method of choice," he continues. If the product chamber of the pump must be sealed airtight to prevent undesirable reactions, magnetic couplings are used. Magnetic couplings are also used in vacuum processes. They also improve the suction behavior of the pump.
GM pump - a series for different operating conditions
Pumps in the GM series achieve precise dosing by feeding the flow with low pulsation. The multi-stage GM pump conveys low-viscosity media even under high pressure and the most difficult operating conditions (e.g. 250 bar, 100 mPas). The standard pump for many dosing tasks is the GM series in a square design. With the development of the multi-stage pump, the range of applications for the GM series has been significantly expanded. The round 2-stage GM pump has been specially developed for use in high-pressure technology. It fulfills the special challenge of pumping small flow rates with low viscosities. The pump serves flow rates from 0.05 to 20 ccm/rev and is therefore particularly suitable for the production of PUR molded parts, block foam, refrigeration unit insulation or sandwich panels.
GA series for higher viscosity media
Making products and processes more efficient is a constant challenge for manufacturing companies. This is why Oerlikon Barmag has added the GA series to the GM series, especially because of the demand for conveying high-viscosity media. The GA series is available in delivery volumes of 1.25 - 30 cm³/rev (0.6-144 l/h). It is designed for pressures up to 200 bar, for viscosities up to 1,500 Pas, and for temperatures up to a maximum of 225°C. With this pump series, Oerlikon Barmag offers customized solutions for process engineering processes where highly accurate and uniform metering is required.
For highly viscous media - the drum pump
The drum pump from Oerlikon Barmag is specially designed for conveying and dosing highly viscous materials such as adhesives, silicones and other highly viscous materials from drums and other large containers and for pressures of up to 250 bar. One of its special features is not only that it discharges highly viscous materials from the drum, but also that the medium can be dosed directly without an intermediate stop.
The gear pump and drum follower plate are synchronized so that the plate effortlessly reaches the bottom of the container, leaving behind only a very small residual quantity of < 1%. This reduces material costs and has a positive effect on the production process.

Recycled Cotton
“Recycled cotton can be generally defined as converting cotton fabric into cotton fiber that can be reused in textile products. Recycled cotton is also commonly referred to as regenerated cotton, reclaimed cotton, or shoddy. Recycled content includes recycled raw material, as well as used, reconditioned, and re-manufactured components.
Pre-consumer: includes scraps created by yarn and fabric by-products
Post-consumer: includes garments, upholstery, towels, household items to be repurposed
The largest volume of recycled cotton sources is produced through pre-consumer waste, such as cutting scraps. Post-consumer waste is more difficult to sort through due to various color shades, fabric blends, and it is generally a more labor-intensive process.” - https://cottonworks.com/en/topics/sustainability/cotton-sustainability/recycled-cotton/
Mylium: Mycelium-based leather
“At Mylium we treasure fungi that grow in a thread-like network, called mycelium. Mycelium grows by extending and branching its tips in search of nutrients. The threads hook strongly together and are pressed to form a uniform sheet.” -https://www.mylium.nl/technology/
Hemp fabric
“One of the most eco-friendly aspects of hemp is that it uses very little water, about 1/20th of the amount of water it takes to grow cotton and can often be rain-fed. Hemp can grow in almost all soil conditions, and unlike cotton (which depletes the soil of nutrients) hemp’s deep-reaching roots preserve the topsoil and subsoil. Hemp plants grow densely as well, leaving no room for weeds and competing plants and is less vulnerable to insects, which means little to no use of pesticides.” Hemp fabric is also biodegradable, and depending on where it is sourced from- largely produced by sustainable practices. - https://wearethefabricstore.com/au/sustainability/gots-organic-hemp
Lyocell and Modal: fibres made from sustainable wood
“TENCEL™ Lyocell and Modal fibers help to maintain the environmental balance by being integrated into nature’s cycle. The fibers originate from the renewable raw material wood, created by photosynthesis. The certified biobased fibers are manufactured using an environmentally responsible production process. The fibers are certified as [100%] compostable and biodegradable, and thus can fully revert back to nature.” - https://www.tencel.com/b2b/sustainability
An interesting article on the incredible role of mycelium and waste management...

Oerlikon Barmag – focus on eccentric screw pumps and pumps for shear-sensitive materials
Oerlikon Barmag – focus on eccentric screw pumps and pumps for shear-sensitive materials
improved productivity and increased lifespan and tailored solutions also for the most demanding applications within the chemicals and plastics industries and in PUR applications – these are the convincing arguments with which Oerlikon Barmag is showcasing its precision metering pumps at this year’s ACHEMA between August 22 and 26, 2022 in Frankfurt (Hall 8.0, Stand E4). The focus is on the new pump for shear-sensitive conveying media and the new eccentric screw pump.To get more news about SEEPEX Pump Part, you can visit hw-screwpump.com official website. The requirements for pumps are considerable, as the demand for customized solutions for increasingly complex processes is rising. This is particularly true for Oerlikon Barmag’s new eccentric screw pump range. High wear-resistance, increased durability and robust operation – the new pump is tailor-made for conveying highly-filled, high-viscosity and abrasive media, such as filled adhesives, filled silicones and filled casting compounds, for example. The is the multi-stage seal system, which considerably increases the pump’s lifespan. The upstream shaft sealing ring protects the slide ring seal against excessively-fast wear caused by challenging media. In turn, the optimum alignment of the drive shaft – ball bearing-supported and centrally-guided through the shaft sealing ring – prevents any metal debris caused by friction and hence ensures considerably greater durability. Producers benefit from considerably greater productivity, as the pumps’ maintenance intervals and hence machine downtimes are significantly reduced. High-speed metering pump with sealed product space The high-speed metering pump has been especially developed for metering poorly-lubricating media. Here, the main benefit is the sealed product space, which extends the pump’s lifespan considerably. The space that comes into contact with the media is limited to the area around the gears. “As a result, the high-speed pump is particularly suited for applications in the chemicals industry, which frequently involve aggressive acids”, comments Thorsten Wagener. The pump’s external rolling bearings are externally lubricated, hence ensuring that the product being metered does not cause damage as a result of poor lubrication. In addition to its extended lifespan, a further benefit is the lower maintenance requirements.
GM series for low-viscosity media The pumps in the GM and GA series provide precision metering with low-pulsation feeding of the conveying medium. The multi-stage GM pump conveys low-viscosity media (i.e. 250 bar, 100 mPas) even under high pressure and in the most challenging conditions. The square design from the proven GM series is the standard pump for many metering tasks. The development of the multi-stage pump expands the applications range for the GM series considerably. The round 2-stage GM pump has been developed especially for use in high-pressure technology. It masters the particular challenge of conveying small throughputs with low viscosities. The pump is perfect for 0.05 through 20 cm³/rev feed sizes and is excellently suited for use in high-pressure machines for PUR molded parts, foam slab stock, refrigeration unit insulations and sandwich panels, for example. GA series pumps for high-viscosity media The Oerlikon Barmag GA range has been especially developed for the challenging conveying of media with higher viscosities. The GA series pumps are available for conveying volumes of between 1.25 and -30 cm³/rev (0.6-144 l/h). They have been designed for pressures of up to 200 bar, for viscosities of up to 1.500 Pas as well as for temperatures of up to max. 225 °C. With this range of pumps, Oerlikon Barmag offers its customers tailor-made solutions for many technical processes in which high-precision and even metering is of paramount importance.

Oerlikon Barmag WINGS FDY Technology for a sustainable polyester yarn production at Garden Silk Mills in India
Remscheid (Germany) / Surat (India), February 12, 2024 – With the successful commissioning of the new polyester yarn production facility at Garden Silk Mills in Surat, India, Oerlikon Barmag once again proves that the company of the Swiss Oerlikon Industrial Group is rightly one of the world's leading suppliers of manmade fiber plants. The conversion and new construction of the polyester spinning mill, which now has a total of 216 WINGS FDY spinning units, was accompanied by extensive engineering work, which was conducted in close cooperation with experts from Germany and, above all, from India.
"We are particularly pleased to have equipped Garden Silk Mills, another successful customer, with our WINGS FDY technology," explained Oerlikon Polymer Processing Solutions CEO Georg Stausberg. "We are confident that the new, state-of-the-art spinning mill will be able to produce polyester yarns for the highest demands in an economically attractive way, so that they can be offered to the Indian market as well as the global market. We congratulate Garden Silk Mills on the successful commissioning and wish them all the best for the future," continued Stausberg.
The FDY yarn expansion project at Garden Silk Mills Private Limited (GSMPL) marks the beginning of a period of rapid progress in the textile sector by The Chatterjee Group (TCG) under the leadership of its visionary Chairman, Dr. Purnendu Chatterjee. With its state-of-the-art manufacturing plant at Jolwa, producing high quality polyester chips, POY, FDY and other specialty yarns, and the iconic Garden Vareli brand having a contemporary collection of sarees and dress materials, the Chatterjee Group, that has investments of USD 8 billion globally, is truly creating the Garden of Tomorrow. “We at MCPI and GSMPL are committed to realize the strong textile vision of Dr. Purnendu Chatterjee, Chairman, TCG”, said D.P.Patra, Whole Time Director and CEO, MCPI.
What is polyester yarn production with Oerlikon Barmag WINGS FDY all about?
The principle of producing a yarn is always the same: spinning pumps press the plastic melt under extremely high pressure through micro-fine nozzles, the resulting filaments are bundled into threads, stretched over godets, and wound up by a winding head. In order to master this principle reliably, high-precision and extremely stable technology is required. These machines are in use day and night, year in, year out. The slightest error during the spinning process cannot be corrected later.
Precise processes for textile and technical yarns
Oerlikon Barmag systems master almost all processes for the production of textile and technical yarns and spin the common polymers polyester, polyamide 6 and 6.6 or polypropylene. Garden Silk Mills focuses on so-called fully drawn yarns (FDY). They are processed into textile surfaces without further finishing. Fully drawn yarns are used wherever textiles need to fall smoothly or glide.
Sustainable solutions for FDY production
Oerlikon Barmag is the technology leader in this field. The WINGS concept breaks through the limits of conventional FDY spinning systems. WINGS stands for optimized production processes, low waste rates and energy consumption reduced by around 30 percent. High yarn quality is a must. This pioneering technology can be used in the FDY process for polyester and polyamide.
Oerlikon Barmag's WINGS technology now supports Garden Silk Mills in the production of FDY premium yarns – high-performance spinning components such as spinning pumps, spinning beams and spinn packs through to crossflow quenching and the 216 WINGS winders were installed in the direct spinning process downstream of an existing polycondensation system at Garden Silk Mills. This is because the quality of the yarn is determined in the spinning mill.
Competition on the yarn markets is currently also extraordinarily strong for Garden Silk Mills. The result: constantly increasing cost pressure. The solution: optimized production processes, economical systems, sustainable technologies. Oerlikon Barmag WINGS FDY technology provides all of this. Efficiency is the key feature of WINGS: The winder can be operated entirely from the floor. All operating elements are at eye level. As a consequence, this reduces the time required for feeding by 25-40%; time in which FDY yarn of the highest quality can be produced – and, above all, no waste.

Lightweight pump ensures precise paint application with robots
The GP451C paint metering pump is newly developed especially for increasingly compact robot arms deployed in paint and lacquer systems. This pump enables efficient, high-precision paint application in automobile production, in the aerospace industry and in the manufacture of components for generating renewable energy, for instance. Oerlikon Barmag has been producing gear metering pumps for metered surface coating and painting since 1985. The high-precision pumps allow the paint and lacquer system atomizers to carry out their task reliably. In this product portfolio, the GP451C – coming in at less than 1,000 g – excels as a result of its particularly low weight. This considerably reduces the wear on the arms of the painting robots used. “The GP451C’s already low weight can be additionally reduced if produced by means of additive manufacturing”, explains Thorsten Wagener, the Sales Manager responsible for pumps. “The innovative technology permits total design freedom when adapting the pump to the production system’s periphery”, he continues. The pump has a wide speed range (20 - 240 rpm), hence covering a large application area, which means that manufacturers do not have to deploy several pumps of varying sizes. The DLC wear-protection layer and the use of ball bearings considerably increase the pump’s service life. Furthermore, the pump is characterized by their flow-enhancing and dead spot-free construction, which shortens the required purging and product conversion times, hence helping to increase productivity. Oerlikon Barmag’s shows the newly developed GP451C paint metering pump at this year’s PaintExpo, taking place in Karlsruhe Germany (Hall 3, Stand 3235) between April 21 and 24. Read the full article

April stattfindet. Read the full article
