[Photo of a pigeon with a long thin crest of dark feathers. It's perched on a wood post, and bent forward with its tail fanned, wings slightly spread, and crest down, perhaps displaying or perhaps about to take off. Its colour patterns are complex: most of its body is grey, with dull pink on the sides; the wings are brown with black stripes, with iridescent feathers in blue-green and purple. It has a bare pink eye ring, a grey beak, and pink feet.]
One of my favourite birds of semi-urban Melbourne. Ranges all over mainland Australia (but not Tasmania); not picky about habitat. I usually see them feeding in flocks on the ground, or chillin' out in pairs in trees. They sometimes flock with rock pigeons.
Males and females look similar. The crest is usually held up, which looks very punk.
Another interesting trait is the noise they make: it mixes a normal bird call with a specialised whistling wing sound.
