Giant Pacific Octopus (Enteroctopus dofleini)

The Giant Pacific Octopus is the largest of all species of octopus. The largest ever specimen weighed over 600 pounds and measured 30 metres in length.

They are highly intelligent organisms – in lab tests, pacific octopuses have learned how to open jars, mimic other octopuses and even solve mazes!

Giant Pacific octopuses use pigments in their skin to change their appearance, allowing them to mimic the appearance of rocks and highly patterned coral.

These octopuses are nocturnal predators, feasting mainly on clams, lobsters and fish. However, they have also been known to attack and eat birds and even sharks. They use their sharp mandibles to tear flesh.

They live to be roughly four years old. Both males and females die soon after breeding, though the females live slightly longer so they can tend to their eggs.
