Read the full scene under the cut!
Shaun’s hands trembled and his leg bounced underneath the table.  He always felt anxious when he took point on missions.  They had been waiting for their target to arrive for an hour with nothing.  His coffee was sitting, half drank and cold.
At least I have good company, Shaun thought, seeing Matt sitting across the table from him.
Matt took the straw out of his water glass and carefully slid it in front of Shaun.
“Go ahead,” Matt nodded, “do it.”
Shaun shook his head, “There’s no point.”
“I wanna see.  Please.”
Shaun sighed, but it didn’t erase the smile on his face.  He had a hard time saying ‘no’ when Matt said ‘please.’
Shaun lifted his hand, his movements subtle and steady.  The water from the glass floated out of its container, flowing and snaking through the air, following the slow, careful movements of his fingers.  He swirled his finger in the air, the water spiraling down until it trickled back into the glass, letting it come to rest in its natural form.
Matt laughed.
A waitress appeared to top off Shaun’s coffee for the third time.
“I’m sorry, sir,” she said hesitantly, “would you mind not doing that here?  It’s making some of the patrons uncomfortable.”
Matt didn’t hide his disdain for the request.  He looked around and found a group that was clearly staring at them, talking in hushed voices as they watched their waitress deliver their message.
Shaun conceded, “Yeah, sure.  My bad.”
The waitress offered a pained smile in condolences as she walked away.
“Fuck them,” Matt spat, “you can practice wherever you want.”
“It’s not worth making a scene.”
“Oh yeah?” Matt smirked, “Watch this.”
With a flick of his wrist, Matt knocked over a glass on the other side of the diner- a small but powerful gust of wind sending water spilling all over the “uncomfortable patrons.”
“Matt!”  Shaun tried to chastise him, but he was laughing with him.
He knew they deserved it.
“What?” Matt teased.  “They’ll never even know.  They’re too busy being stuck up their own asses.”
Shaun snickered.  He was always jealous of the confidence Matt carried himself with.
The door hinges creaked, demanding Shaun’s attention.  A group of young girls walked into the restaurant, waiting to be seated.
Shaun sighed, “None of them look like our girl.”
“No they do not.”  Matt leaned on his elbows and huffed, “Why do you think Kennedy wants us to recruit her so bad?”
“Why does Kennedy do anything?”
Matt laughed without humor.  For an informant, Kennedy wasn’t always very informative.  They tended to pick and choose the information they provided very carefully - sometimes leaving out crucial details, to their leader’s chagrin.
“Do you trust them?”  Matt asked.
Shaun answered this question a lot.
“I trust Nate,” was his answer today like every other.
Matt nodded, his agreement clear.  Despite the fact that Matt was the newest member of the faction, he learned that lesson fast.
Shaun had known Nate for over a decade.  He was the strongest paragon that Shaun had ever met- only one person Shaun knew came even close to his skill and power- but Nate had a tactical mind and caring heart that no one could match.
If Nate thought that following Kennedy’s lead on this recruitment was a good idea, then he was willing to give it a try.
The door hinges creaked again, but this time Shaun was caught off guard by the look on Matt’s face.  It was as if he had seen a ghost.
Shaun raised an eyebrow.  “What?  You see our girl?”
“No, no- I just- we need to go.”
“What?” Shaun looked around, scanning the diner for threats.  Nothing seemed out of the ordinary.  “What’s wrong, man, what’s got you so spooked?”
“No, it’s nothing, I just- God, I can’t do this.”
“Can’t do what?”
“I need us to leave.  Now.”  Matt was breathing heavily, his fingers twitching with energy he was holding back with all of his might.  “Please, Shaun.”
Son of a bitch, Shaun cursed himself as he stood up.  He gestured for Matt to go ahead, letting him lead the way.
Shaun took one last look around, hoping he could identify the problem before he left.
Nothing.
Now he had to report back to Nate that the mission was a failure and he didn’t even know why.
Feels like this is how my missions always end.  With failure.

Song #148
Is this rock? I'm not good enough at genres to know this. It has a lot of guitar, but if that makes it rock music I don't know...
