Day 22: a more defective creation

“That,” Dr. Voynich begins, after giving you a moment to catch your breath and soak in the wonder of her invention, “is the Spiritualizer.” You wipe moisture from your brow as she speaks, unsure if it’s sweat or condensation from the air. “The latest in communication with the afterlife. Long gone are the days of waiting for a spirit to come to you, or finding a pre-haunted locale. With the Spiritualizer, we can summon any ghost, anywhere, contacting the lingering dead on our own terms!”

She then stops dead silent, and holds a finger to her lips. No matter how many times you see her rapidly shift focus, you still have yet to become accustomed to it. You can only imagine how the people who live with her feel… maybe that’s part of why her lab is so removed from the rest of the house.

In the silence, you hear the clinking of metal, soft and slowly getting closer. There’s a slight metal creak, and the sound of sloshing. Then quiet again, followed by a soft plap plap on the window.

The scientist hurries to the window, hoisting it open, for an orange blob to slip through. It ambulates like a slug, sliding slowly and unconfidently across surfaces. It has no particular form, and unlike a mollusc it leaves no trail behind it. Just a mass of orange, somewhere between the consistency of tangerine jello and liquefied flesh. No odor, no features, just non-Newtonian fluid with a mind of its own.

It continues to the center of the room, meandering in its path like an old dog who has yet to make up their mind about just what they’re doing, before it simply stops and spreads out into more of a puddle. Dr. Voynich creeps up to the quivering mass and kneeling, her one obsidian prosthetic now quite apparent as she folds it beneath her next to her leg of flesh.

“Gamma,” she coos. When the puddle does not respond, she speaks in that same strange tongue again--or perhaps a different one, you have no way of knowing. The blob jiggles slightly, its edges shifting. “Show the nice people your trick.”

Dr. Voynich then steps back to give Gamma some space. After a moment’s consideration, the slime reconstitutes itself, using all its might to form itself into a three-dimensional shape. First it extends upward into a rough cube, holds this for a moment, and then extends these edges into a vague approximation of the Venus of Willendorf. At the prompting of Dr. Voynich, you and Cyran respond with a very loose applause, and Gamma falls apart once again.

A clap of thunder echoes outside. Lightning flashes in the window, and then you hear the clouds burst with a heavy shower of rain. You look back into the lab, where Dr. Voynich is coaxing her creation into a jar, labeled “Test Γ” in messy writing. “You did good sweetheart, getting inside before it started pouring, yes you did.”
