Apple Unveils Mac OS X

Next Generation OS Features New “Aqua” User Interface

MACWORLD EXPO, SAN FRANCISCO

January 5, 2000

Reasserting its leadership in personal computer operating systems, Apple® today unveiled Mac® OS X, the next generation Macintosh® operating system. Steve Jobs demonstrated Mac OS X to an audience of over 4,000 people during his Macworld Expo keynote today, and over 100 developers have pledged their support for the new operating system, including Adobe and Microsoft. Pre-release versions of Mac OS X will be delivered to Macintosh software developers by the end of this month, and will be commercially released this summer.

“Mac OS X will delight consumers with its simplicity and amaze professionals with its power,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s iCEO. “Apple’s innovation is leading the way in personal computer operating systems once again.”

The new technology Aqua, created by Apple, is a major advancement in personal computer user interfaces. Aqua features the “Dock” — a revolutionary new way to organize everything from applications and documents to web sites and streaming video. Aqua also features a completely new Finder which dramatically simplifies the storing, organizing and retrieving of files—and unifies these functions on the host computer and across local area networks and the Internet. Aqua offers a stunning new visual appearance, with luminous and semi-transparent elements such as buttons, scroll bars and windows, and features fluid animation to enhance the user’s experience. Aqua is a major advancement in personal computer user interfaces, from the same company that started it all in 1984 with the original Macintosh.

Aqua is made possible by Mac OS X’s new graphics system, which features all-new 2D, 3D and multimedia graphics. 2D graphics are performed by Apple’s new “Quartz” graphics system which is based on the PDF Internet standard and features on-the-fly PDF rendering, anti-aliasing and compositing—a first for any operating system. 3D graphics are based on OpenGL, the industry’s most-widely supported 3D graphics technology, and multimedia is based on the QuickTime™ industry standard for digital multimedia.

At the core of Mac OS X is Darwin, Apple’s advanced operating system kernel. Darwin is Linux-like, featuring the same Free BSD Unix support and open-source model. Darwin brings an entirely new foundation to the Mac OS, offering Mac users true memory protection for higher reliability, preemptive multitasking for smoother operation among multiple applications and fully Internet-standard TCP/IP networking. As a result, Mac OS X is the most reliable and robust Apple operating system ever.

Gentle Migration

Apple has designed Mac OS X to enable a gentle migration for its customers and developers from their current installed base of Macintosh operating systems. Mac OS X can run most of the over 13,000 existing Macintosh applications without modification. However, to take full advantage of Mac OS X’s new features, developers must “tune-up” their applications to use “Carbon”, the updated version of APIs (Application Program Interfaces) used to program Macintosh computers. Apple expects most of the popular Macintosh applications to be available in “Carbonized” versions this summer.

Developer Support

Apple today also announced that more than 100 leading developers have pledged their support for the new operating system, including Adobe, Agfa, Connectix, id, Macromedia, Metrowerks, Microsoft, Palm Computing, Quark, SPSS and Wolfram (see related supporting quote sheet).

Availability

Mac OS X will be rolled out over a 12 month period. Macintosh developers have already received two pre-releases of the software, and they will receive another pre-release later this month—the first to incorporate Aqua. Developers will receive the final “beta” pre-release this spring. Mac OS X will go on sale as a shrink-wrapped software product this summer, and will be pre-loaded as the standard operating system on all Macintosh computers beginning in early 2001. Mac OS X is designed to run on all Apple Macintosh computers using PowerPC G3 and G4 processor chips, and requires a minimum of 64 MB of memory.

Xcode is the tool developers use to build apps for the Apple ecosystem – MacOS, iOS, and all things Apple.

This guide will walk you through how to successfully install Xcode onto your Mac, from start to finish.

Here are some handy tips to know before you get started:

Xcode only runs on a mac. If you are on a PC, sadly you won't be able to use Xcode.

You'll need a good, stable internet connection. The latest version is around 8 gigabytes in size.

Be sure to have at least 30 gigabytes of free space on your computer. The latest .xip file (v11.4.1 at the time of writing) is ~8 gigabytes zipped. When you unzip it, that's another 17 gigabytes. Then you'll need the command line tool, which is yet another 1.5 gigabytes.

Here's an overview of the steps to install Xcode

Download Xcode

Install the command line tool

Open the new version

Delete files

Note that I have listed some Terminal commands in the steps below. These commands can be typed into your present working directory. This means that you don't need to navigate to any particular folder.

If you really want to, you can first type cd before typing the commands in the below steps. This will return you back to the home folder.

Step #1: Download Xcode

There are two ways to do this. For the latest version and a theoretically 'easy' installation, you can use the App Store. I don't recommend this option.

I prefer to use the developer site. This comes with the bonus option of being able to download any version you'd like.

Option #1: Download via the App Store for the latest version (not my preferred option)

In theory, this should be a seamless and pain-free process. But if the installation fails for any reason on the last step, it is very hard to troubleshoot.

There are a few reasons for failure, and no easy way to know which is the underlying cause. If you do encounter a failure, you will need to re-download the entire file again each time you try to fix the failure. As the latest version is 8 gigabytes, I didn't much enjoy this approach.

But if you're feeling brave, here are the steps:

Open the App Store on your mac

Search for Xcode

Click install or update

Option 2: Download via the Developer site for a specific version (my preferred option)

Head to the 'more' section of the Apple developer website

Type in the version that you'd like, and download the Xcode_x_x_x.xip file. Keep in mind that Xcode 11.4.1 is 8 gigabytes, so this will take awhile depending on your internet connection.

Once the file is downloaded, click on .xip to extract it. Your laptop will extract it to the same folder you downloaded it to. This extraction process is automatic. You don't need to do anything more after you click on the .xip file. This step will take a few minutes.

(Optional) Once extracted, rename the application to “Xcode11.x.x” if you are using multiple versions.

Drag application to the Applications folder

(Optional) Set the new Xcode version as the default. Open Terminal and type sudo xcode-select -switch /Applications/Xcodex.x.x.app . Replace x.x.x with the version number. For example: Xcode11.4.1.app. You will need to enter in your computer admin password. I'm pretty sure this will update the default Xcode version for all users on your computer, so best to check with other users first

Step #2: Install the command line tool (CLT)

If you have multiple users on your computer, you will need to update the CLT for each user.

Download .dmg

To update the CLT, go to app developer website and download the command line tool .dmg.

If you have never installed Xcode before, you may be able to update with your Terminal by typing in xcode-select --install instead of visiting the developer website.

But if you have an existing version of Xcode installed on your machine, you'll probably see this error:

This means you'll need to go to the developer website instead.

Installing the CLT

When the .dmg has finished downloaded, double click the file to open it. This will open a little window that looks like this:

Double click the box and follow the prompts to install the CLT. It will take a few minutes to complete.

It may ask you at the end of the installation whether you want to move this to the trash bin. When it does this, it's talking about moving the .dmg file to the trash bin. Since you should no longer need this file. I always say yes to this.

Step #3: Open Xcode

Open the Applications folder and open the new version of Xcode. If you renamed Xcode, make sure you open the correct application

Xcode may prompt you to install additional components. Click install. This will take a few minutes.

While it's installing, check that your default Xcode version is the one you just downloaded:

Open Terminal

Type brew config

You should see “CLT” and “Xcode” versions, as well as everything else. This should reflect the version that you have just downloaded. In my case, I downloaded Xcode 11.4.1.

Once the components are installed, Xcode will launch. You should be able to pick up your old projects and continue where you left off seamlessly*.

*Note that if you use any proxy tools, such as Charles, you will need to re-install those certificates in your simulator again.

If you encounter any errors while trying to build or run a project, check which device you are trying to launch. The new version may not remember the device you were using before. If so, click on the device and choose 'Add additional simulators' from the drop down menu to add the device you want.

Step #4. Delete the files

If you don't need the older versions of Xcode on your computer, you can uninstall them and get some hard drive space back.

You can also delete the .xip file of the version you just downloaded, as well as the CLT.dmg file.

But if you find yourself in one of these categories, breathe easy; there are several free photo editing programs out there that can deliver close to the same results as Photoshop with none of the added cost.

You’ll probably end up upgrading to photo editing software with a little more power at some point in your career. However, if you need something to work with now and you can’t spend any money, using these free Photoshop alternatives as a substitute can be a lifesaver.

Cross-Platform, Open Source Alternatives to Photoshop

GIMP

You can’t have a list like this one without including GNU Image Manipulation Program, or GIMP to those who know it. There’s a lot to love about GIMP—it features Photoshop staples like layers, masks, gradients, text tools, plug-in support and more. Best of all, it’s open source software with a large community of users, so there are plenty of GIMP tutorials and add-ons out there to help you overcome any of the program’s limitations.

Be aware that GIMP cannot output CMYK files by default, so if you’re preparing a print-ready design in 4-color, you’ll need an additional GIMP plugin with CMYK support.

Gimphoto

If you really need to work in a Photoshop-like environment, Gimphoto is a version of GIMP that imitates Adobe’s layout while still keeping it open source. The menus, terminology, and basic interface have all been tweaked to give Photoshop veterans a more familiar working environment.

Unlike the similarly-interfaced Gimpshop, Gimphoto includes many extra features, such as new brush styles, layer styles, and support for standard Photoshop plug-ins.

CinePaint

CinePaint is deep image editing software that is primarily used in video editing, but it’s also a useful tool for retouching photos because it can work with images of higher color fidelity. A higher quality image produces better results in your print projects, so this might be a program worth looking into.

Inkscape

Inkscape uses a vector-based environment, so it’s a much better option for illustration than most other free alternatives to Photoshop; in fact, it’s almost more of an Illustrator alternative (though it can still be used for basic bitmap edits like photo retouching). The program’s native format is Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), so you don’t have to worry about your project looking fuzzy if you try to resize it. Overall, Inkscape is a great choice for any designer who wants to learn vector illustration on a tight budget.

Seashore

Seashore is open source Mac-only editing software based on GIMP, but with an interface designed to match the MAC OS X aesthetic. The result is a good-looking program that may not exactly be equivalent to Photoshop, but ultimately produces attractive results with ease.

ChocoFlop

The good news is that ChocoFlop is a formidable design tool made exclusively for the Mac OS, and there is a freeware beta version available. The bad news is, the designers decided not to continue forward with the project and will not be releasing any more versions or support for the program. However, it’s still a worthwhile tool, especially with its unique non-destructive image editing capabilities.

LiveQuartz

This simple photo editor for Mac offers multi-touch support and non-destructive filters as well as some essential drawing tools. The newest version of LiveQuartz does cost a few bucks on the App Store, but if you’re really strapped for cash, you can still download older freeware versions.

Photoshop Alternatives for Windows PCs

Paint.NET

Paint.NET might not be fancy, but it has an intuitive interface and plenty of the same features as Photoshop—though you might find yourself missing those features that it lacks. Despite the name, Paint.NET is really best used for photo editing since it doesn’t have many illustrative tools, though it’s also open source with an impressive support base.

Photo Pos Pro

Photo Pos Pro is a freeware program for Windows that’s great for beginners. The interface is easy-to-use, there’s a low learning curve and the software even provides helpful pop-up tips. These are the sort of things that might make a more experienced designer lose their mind, but can be a major boon for those who are just starting out.

Serif PhotoPlus

Many designers look at Serif PhotoPlus as a serious contender with Photoshop. Unfortunately, the advanced version does cost money (though not as much as the Adobe products will set you back.) However, there is a basic freeware version of PhotoPlus that might not have as many features, but still gives you the basics at a comparable quality to Photoshop, along with a simple, user-friendly interface.

PhotoFiltre

PhotoFiltre is an easy, intuitive program for photo editing and manipulation. True to its name, the program has a wide range of filters that make it easy for novices to jump right in and alter their images, but there’s plenty here for the seasoned pros to find appealing, too.

Pixia

Pixia is a Japanese program which has found popularity in the west and has since been translated into English. Pixia was created mainly for digital illustrations (specifically for manga and anime artists), but it has plenty of useful features for design and photo manipulation as well. The biggest downside to Pixia would be the outdated-looking interface, but if you don’t mind your editing software looking a bit “retro,” this may be the right tool for you.

Picasa

Google’s Picasa software might not have the full capacity of Photoshop, but it’s a good program for making last-minute edits. Picasa does have a few unique tricks up its sleeve such as batch editing and photo-management tools, not to mention easy integration and sharing on Google platforms.

Pixlr

Pixlr is a great online Photoshop alternative, especially if you need to do work when you’re nowhere near your home computer. It has an impressive amount of clout for a program that works in your web browser, and it stands out for having three different levels of editing power to choose from: playful, efficient or advanced. There’s even a mobile app version for designers who are on the go and need to make quick fixes.

Splashup

Splashup is an online image editing program with a clean design interface that’s highly reminiscent of Photoshop. It doesn’t have a ton of features, but it does support layers and pixel-level control. Splashup is a good tool for beginners, especially since it allows for easy sharing on the web’s top photo sharing sites like Flickr and Facebook.

SumoPaint

SumoPaint is another web-based favorite of many professional designers, since it features an interface similar to Photoshop with plenty of the same features. There’s also an inexpensive desktop version available if you don’t want to use it in your browser, and a mobile app for illustration on the go.

Photoshop Express Editor

If you absolutely have to use Photoshop but don’t have access to it, there’s always the browser version, Photoshop Express Editor. Of course, it would be silly for Adobe to give away their product for free, so the online application has limited tools, but it’s a good option for editing essentials from a name that you trust.

They say a poor workman blames his tools, and the same must hold true for designers. Yes, we admit, no freeware program can serve as a complete replacement for a high-end program like Adobe Photoshop. Hey everyone, I know it's been a common issue for mac players being unable to play the game for whatever reason, and while I may not know all the details I wanted to share my workaround for the time being. Following all the steps below should allow you to run the game client and have it working as intended. (Without having to download any programs you have to pay $$$ for, instead spend that money on donations for the server now that you can play it!)

I'm sorry this guide is so long, but I've tested it and know it works 100%.

Edit: Before we get started I just wanted to add that I did a bit of research and supposedly there's an easier solution. There's a program called 'Wine' that's used to run windows programs on Mac and Linux, however I don't know if the program is free or if it even works. You can try and download it but I have no clue if it'll work or not.

Step 1:

Fairly simple, you'll need to download a VM (Virtual Machine) of your choice, my personal favorite is VirtualBox. The download link can be found here. https://www.virtualb.../wiki/Downloads

If you're on a Mac operating system, then you'll want to click the download link titled 'OS X hosts'

Step 2:

Download and install the VirtualBox (Or another VM) software onto your computer, unfortunately I can't show a step by step guide using the OS X download but fingers crossed it looks something like the Windows download version, as shown below.

Make sure you download the full version of the VM client and continue.

Make sure when you're prompted to make a start menu shortcut, make one, it'll save us a lot of time.

Step 3:

Now that you have a VM downloaded, you'll want to download a Windows ISO file so that your VM can run. Honestly I'd prefer a Windows 7 ISO, but on this guide I'll show you how to get a Windows 10 ISO running, since It's available for free in Microsoft's website.

On the link you'll be sent to a page with a download link shown here:

Click the link and download the Windows Media Creation Tool file, and open it. Once you've done that you'll be prompted to read the license terms, just click accept.

HERE'S THE IMPORTANT PART:

Now that you've downloaded the MediaCreationTool for Windows (10) You need to click the circle I have below, and click 'Next'.

You'll then be prompted to the next page, I recommend using the recommended options. If you need to change something about it, such as the language or the 64/32-bit settings, then do so. However please make sure you install the normal 'Windows 10' version.

Make sure you then download Windows 10 media as an ISO file, shown below.

Download and save Windows.iso onto your DESKTOP for easy access, this makes the guide easier for both of us.

Step 4:

I'm not sure why I'm putting the steps so loosely onto the guide, forgive me, but now that you have both Windows.iso and a VM, you can finally run Windows (10) on your Mac.

Open up Oracle VM VirtualBox, and Click 'New' and we'll start to create our Windows VM, this might get a little tricky so follow closely.

After you click 'New' you'll be shown this pop-up window, just fill out the name with anything you want, just make sure the type is 'Microsoft Windows' and the version is Windows 10 (64-bit or 32-bit depending on your OS).

For the next few images, you'll want to follow the exact settings I have, you can add more GB and memory to your VM to make it run faster (which to run YGO TDOANE you might need more memory) but if you make the settings any lower than what I have you'll more than likely not have enough room to download Windows.iso, so be sure to clear up space on your computer if you don't have it.

Here are the settings I have for each section:

Memory Size: 3000 MB

Hard Disk: Select 'Create a virtual hard disk now' and make sure it is 32.00 GB

Hard disk file type: VDI

Storage: Dynamically Allocated

File location: Anywhere you want, 32.00 GB

Alright! Now that you've completed creating the actual VM, you'll want to double click it on your VM list to power it on.

Once powered on you'll be prompted with another pop-up window. You'll want to click the circle labeled 'Create a virtual hard disk now' and click 'Create'.

Once opened, it'll ask you to select a start-up disk, this is when you'll want to click the small folder with a green '^' arrow on it. Once you do that it'll open your file menu where you'll search for your 'Windows.iso' file. If you've followed my instructions it should be on your desktop, if not look for it and select it, and press 'Open'.

Here's where it can get really tricky. Now that you've successfully mounted the Window.iso file and started the VM, it'll begin to run, and as you're now using a completely new Windows OS, you'll need to install it for the first time. Choose the settings you want and click 'Next' and then 'Install'

The next step is a little annoying, You'll be shown a window where you have to put in a product key, simply click 'I don't have a product key' and continue.

Now that you've done that, you'll be given a window with different selections as to which version of Windows you want to install, just install Windows 10 Pro for this guide.

Accept the license terms and when prompted pick the custom installation (advanced) option. You'll then be asked to install this into a drive, which there should only be one, and obviously, click that one and press 'Next'

Installing Windows 10 Pro will take a while, for me it took around 20 minutes, so make sure that when you're done using your VM client you NEVER delete the VM file, unless you're done using the VM completely and want to uninstall it. Once successfully installed the VM will need to restart, however we're going to be exiting out of the VM, so click the X at the top right and select 'Power off the machine' option when prompted.

We can't continue until we get rid of the Windows.iso from our VM, this is because if we don't we'll be stuck in an endless loop of booting up into the installation section of Windows 10. To remove the Windows.iso file all we need to do is right click our VM on the main page, and click 'Settings'. Gonna show you where to right click below:

Once your settings are opened you'll want to proceed to the 'Storage' tab, there you'll see two files, one named 'whatever you named your VM'.vdi and 'Windows.iso'. Just right click Windows.iso and delete it. Close your Settings window and now you're ready to boot up Windows 10 without any problems!

Now here's the easy part. You'll load up Windows 10 and after a short wait you'll see this screen below:

Follow the basic installation guide all the way through and you should have Windows 10 successfully running on your Virtual Machine!

Now that we're finally on Windows 10 in our VM (Hopefully the setup and account creation didn't take too long for you) we can begin to get onto YGO TDOANE!

Simply, just open your browser (The only browser you should have right now is Internet Explorer, and for that I'm sorry), and click the link here: https://drive.google...mxBeHcwTjA/edit This link is the mirror download for the Windows version of the TDOANE client. If you can't copy/paste this link simply just Google 'YGO TDOANE download', click the first link, and subsequently download either of the Windows mirrors on the page.

Follow the installation for TDOANE as you normally would and you should now be able to run and play the game without any issues. Here's a screenshot of me in the client using VM:

P.S. If the game is running too slow on the VM then you need to increase the amount of memory you have on the VM, you can do so from the 'Settings' section, the same area we deleted the 'Windows.iso' file.
