Second Chance | Chapter 5 - Deja vu
Series masterlist
It was only a few more weeks until exam season, and with the last few projects to be submitted, it was time to get started on your notes. So far, everything has been going well. Natasha left you alone, you went on more dates with Andrew, and he has been joining you, Camellia and Diana, in your studying sessions. Your friends love to tease him since he is the only guy in the group, and you have to reel them back before they scare him away. You started to feel a lot more comfortable in this life and feel like you have made actual changes to better yourself. Instead of focusing on your studies all the time, you made an effort to go out with your friends, indulge in what they like and explore the city a little. Despite being born and raised here, you felt like a tourist each time you went out with them, experiencing different things the city offers.
You’d hope you could say the same for your family, but there hasn’t been any noticeable difference despite your efforts. There were still as many complaints coming from them. In a positive light, at least their relationship didn’t deteriorate any further.
After all the studying that you have done, you’d hope you’ll at least improve your grades this time round. But then again, only perfect practice makes perfect, and yet it didn’t feel like you did something right. It felt like you were just memorising things and not learning how to apply them.
You can only hope for the best and see how it turns out.
After the exams, there is about one month's break for the students, and the Archery Club has decided to hold a sports camp at the beginning of the month. The camp is held for three days two nights, but they have the option to stay on longer if they want to.
You decided to stay longer since your parents weren’t planning any overseas trips this year, so why not spend time with friends instead? You invited your friends to join, but they were going overseas with their families, so only Andrew could attend. Even though it was a sports camp, it was more of a bonding session, and training was only done in the morning for 5 hours, starting at 7 am.
You must have missed the memo that the resort that everyone was staying at belonged to Tony’s family because when you arrived with Andrew, the entire group of his friends were also at the lobby checking in.
You pulled Clint aside when he was checking in for the Archery team with the president. “Why didn’t you tell me that your friends were going to be here?” You whispered while you glared at him.
“Why does it matter? We planned this months ago, Y/N! You knew Tony was able to do this for us for free, and he has the archery range. We have a limited budget as it is.” He explained. “Look, I don’t know what’s going on with you and Nat, but this is a shared space, just avoid her if you don’t want to see her.”
Easier said than done. You scoffed before heading back to join your other friends. Rooms were separated into boys and girls, and all of you went to your respective rooms to place your bags before coming out again.
“Alright!” Clint raised his voice to get everyone’s attention. “The first day here is free and easy, don’t do anything that will harm the school’s name, lights off at 11 pm. Is everyone clear?”
A chorus of ‘yes’ sounded, and everyone went their separate ways. Richard and his friends invited you to join them, but you turned them down, opting to spend some time with Andrew instead. “Maybe tomorrow!”
“Hey, I know the next few days you’re going to spend a lot of time with your teammates, so how about we spend the day at the beach? Just the two of us?” Andrew suggested. You nodded, liking his suggestion. After all, it wasn’t fair for him to come here when he hardly knew anyone.
When you were with Natasha, you always felt bad that you weren’t putting enough effort into the relationship. Natasha always planned the dates, asked you out, the proposal, and everything. You did tell her that you weren’t much of a planner, more of the person that goes along with the flow. You’d find time to spend with her, but you’d never be the one to plan a night out. You offered to put in more effort, but with a shake of her head, she always said she didn’t mind that she was the one who planned as long as you were able to be with her.
“Shall we have dinner at a taco place near the beach?” You spotted one not too far when Andrew was driving earlier, and you checked the review when you were putting away your bags.
“I don’t see why not.” Both of you walked down the street calmly, talking about the things that you all wished to do during the camp. Camps in college were different compared to high school, they were a lot less restrictive, and there weren’t any professors in charge. Directors were free to plan their itinerary as long as it was safe for the students.
Andrew talked about his club in Basketball, another sport you were interested in but never had the courage to enter due to it being male-dominant, the lack of sporty friends and your shy nature. His tournament was coming up, and you promised to go and cheer him on. You were excited to hear all the sounds that the sport makes.
“You should smile more often.” He suddenly said, which made you look at him confused. “I mean, you should smile more freely. You always seem to hide your smile behind your hand. You look great when you smile.”
“Ah really?” You felt your face heat up, and you went to cup your red cheeks. “I never liked the way I look when I smile or laugh. I always feel like it’s too boisterous. Pictures hardly turn out nice when I smile, more often when I pull a serious face.”
“We can’t let that happen, can we.” He reached over the table and grabbed your hand. “Let’s go. I think I saw a mini carnival that the town set up earlier. If we move fast enough, we should be able to get there before it closes. Come on!”
Both of you ran towards the town centre, where everything was on full display. The lights shone bright in the dimming sky. “Come on! I know this isn’t the best carnival there is, but there are still some rides and carnival games.” Both of you paid for the entrance fee and were given plastic tags before being allowed in.
Due to it being a temporary carnival and safety concerns, the rides were mostly catered to kids and didn’t require much height. But that didn’t stop any of you from having fun. It wasn’t popular as most people were more interested in the food stands, so you got to ride all the rollercoasters very quickly, returning for those you liked.
“See. That isn’t too bad. You can smile when you’re relaxed.” Andrew said when you decided it was time to stop with the rollercoasters.
“I’m just very self-conscious.” You picked on your nails.
“It’s time for the carnival games! We can’t leave without playing them.” Andrew dragged you along until he found the store with the ring toss. “What do you want? I’ll win it for you.”
“Are you sure?” You asked sceptically, not because you don’t trust him, but because most of the games are scams.
“Yes, I have won them a couple of times.” He said confidently before asking to try one game from the vendor. He waited for your answer, and you finally told him you would like the dolphin plushie. When he scored consecutively, you held your breath when he was about to toss the last ring. You watched as the ring circled around the mouth of the bottle a few times before landing in the right place.
“Oh my god. How many times have you done this?” You asked in disbelief, and he made it look easy.
“Just a couple of times for my younger cousins.” He waved it off before handing you the dolphin. You looked at the blue dolphin in all its glory, the length of your arm.
“Thank you.”
“It’s only the first day, and it has been exciting. Why don’t we wind down by the beach? It’s getting dark.” You nodded before making your way back. It’s a straight road down by the beach to get to the resort.
With the waves crashing, you and he walked down the beach holding your new toy. “Y/N.” He gained your attention, and you turned to face him. “Do you want to be my girlfriend?”
“What?”
“Do you want to be my girlfriend?” Nat asked when she took you to the beach. You had just finished a study session with her, and she brought you out to destress, or you’d be stuck in her dorm studying all night.
“Yeah!” You said excitedly; that’s all you were dreaming about once you laid eyes on her.
“Are you that excited to be my girlfriend?” She chuckled when you answered immediately. You nodded like a child winning the grand prize, “You have no idea how long I’ve waited.” And she gently kissed your forehead before taking your hand and placing another kiss there. That’s probably how your first school love felt. “Thank goodness. I was worried you were going to say no.”
“Never, Natty!” You hug her arm tighter, not wanting to let out.
“Do you want to be my girlfriend?” Andrew repeated. “But if you think that’s too fast, I’m willing to wait and continue to date a while longer before you feel comfortable answering.”
“Yes. I want to be your girlfriend.” You gave him a clear answer before he could start spiralling away. You saw him let out a breath before giving you a wide smile. “It’s a nice day to start being your girlfriend.” You said as you looked at the sunset.
“I have a feeling I’d either have a hard time sleeping because I’m smiling too much, or I’ll have the best sleep I’ve had in a while.” Andrew confessed.
“At least you can sleep in tomorrow.” You were jealous of him for not having to wake up so early for training.
“Then let’s get back soon so you get more sleep.” This time, he took your hand more confidently as you walked back to the resort.

Hi! May I request Kirari Momobami with a reader who disobey the rules of the School? Like not gambling or doesn't act like a pet, that stuff.
Have a good day :)
Yeah sure! Thanks for the ask, shit got me thinking fr
Hope it wasn’t too long or anything
Kirari Momobami with a disobediant reader
as we all know, Kirari herself is a self centred narcissist parading herself as an honest and true member of the school. She fully believes in abiding by the rules (her rules) and doesn’t appreciate the disruption of the order
so when she notices you, of course you were an issue only she could resolve
She first is aware of your unregulated behavior when she sees you directly disobey someone despite your mittens/Fido status, and she’s intruiged. You wouldn’t be the first case she’s seen, but she finds a particular enjoyment in breaking people like you down
She has a need to make you conform for her, before her, below her
At first she’s unknown and unnoticeable to you, but you aren’t to her. She will quietly keep track of you, watch your failures and wins in the gambling halls, your participation within the school and your rebellion towards the system
She’s particularly interested in your reasoning behind the rejection, seeing if your background could impact it, or your family, or your wealth. She won’t admit it but she’s digging into your history In order to find something on you. Dirt. So when the time comes she can use it to keep you obedient
The chances are you’re likely to evade her, that stops when she directly challenges you. And you fail (because of course you do)
Kirari had planned this moment too, as she had waited until you had nearly paid off your debts from previous years just to plummet you back into it
As if that wasn’t bad enough, she had decided to relieve Sayaka of constantly being by her side, opting for you to be waiting on hand and foot for her at her order like the obedient pet she would train you to be
Due to this however, Sayaka feels a strong disgust towards you for being a wedge in their “relationship”
Seeing as she encourages the mistreatment of students, her punishments for you will be no different. In fact they’re probably crueler to properly ingrain the schools hierarchal importance into you
She says the cruelty is necessary to fix you : “I’m doing this for you.”
After a while it feels less subservient and more like a toxic relationship. One minute she will praise you, for your work as her personal Mittens/Fido. Then on the next she will practically disregard you and throw you into losing games for her pleasure
She forms a sort of grim interest in you, not quite love, but a near enough obsession to keep you around. She likes the feeling she gets off your suffering to which she gladly contributes to
Due to this interest it’s likely she’ll never leave you to go back to your normal place in the school, she’s going to control you for a long time
After some punishments shes uncharacteristically sweet to you, tending to you, and sympathising. Only to put you through it again and again
However she’s very strict on the fact that you’re her play thing, and she doesn’t like sharing you.
If at the beginning of your role as a pet you decided not to be obedient, then that isn’t an option for her, she would snuff that flame almost immediately
If she struggles to find weaknesses in you to manipulate in her goal to ensure your obedience, she’s not below threatening people you love. She knows everything about you and will use it.
“Be good for me, and you won’t need to see them suffer”
By the end you’ll be moulded into the perfect gambling student, by herself only. But she’ll never let you go <3

Having a variety of tools for a variety of approaches to training can be very beneficial for training historical fencing.
But also having enough money to start up training with full sparring gear and metal swords can be prohibitevely expensive for many people.
In such cases getting some foam swords and minimal protection (mask, gorget, cup, lighter gloves) can go a long way to help folks start out their fencing journey.
And if you're trying to start a club it's potentially a difference between 'tough but doable' and 'straight up impossible unless a big life change happens'.
Today there are many options for foam swords you can order online, but it can be great to be able to DIY some of it.
The above link is a finnish guide on how to do it that many high level hemaists there have used, and similar to how many larpers and sca etc. folks have made their own weapons for years back, but a bit optimized for hema purposes.
Google translate is imperfect but you should be able to understand all the general concepts and get better with follow up attempts.
Also keep in mind the first attempt once you have all the relevant materials(that are fairly cheap pretty much everywhere) it'll likely take you anywhere between 30min and 3h to finish a single foam sword.
But after a few tries you may need no more than 20min per foam sword.
These types of training tools are also great for any day where you don't want to put full regular gear on but still want to fence a bit in minimal gear. They're also great for instilling confidence in beginners to move freely, even if in full gear.
They're also more forgiving and safer if you know there's folks who struggle with control, at least a stepping stone before they're ready to fence freely with steel.
They're also slightly lighter than the steel versions so also more appropriate for beginners if you want more class time to be devoted to training skill, whether through drills, games etc. than to building physical capacity.
However even an experienced student may find them a great tool for improving timing and distance management.
Good luck and hope you all find this useful.

I just want my dad- pt1
Info: Y/n tries to deal with the loss of her father, but Andreas and Rosalind seem to have different ideas on how she can do that.
Series masterlist
Two months after her father was taken from her, y/n lay on the bed, scrolling through her phone as she looked at the pictures she had of her and her father. Many were from holidays they spent together, with one being a picture Sky had taken while Silva and her fake fought. Since the incident, y/n had tried to visit her father but any time she requested visitation hours, she was denied.
Andreas had taken to training her as a specialist, claiming that her abilities of a fairy were wasted if she wasn't willing to help the queen. Many times he placed her and Sky together, the two fighting till one was pinned to the ground, or an injury caused them to call quits. Majority of the time it was her, and as a result she was left with bruises scattered around her boy and stiff movement became her daily walking pattern. Y/n wasn't made to be a specialist and knew that she shouldn't really be training, more so focusing on her magic.
Since the changes happened in the school, y/n now stayed in the winx suite, Bloom having had convinced Rosalind that it would be best to have her around friends so she wasn't alone. It helped when the fire fairy pointed out that being around friends would mean that her fellow fire fairy wouldn't lose control if she felt like she belonged somewhere. Y/n's thoughts were disrupted when there was a knock on the door, and she hummed as she looked up as the door opened.
"We have magic practice in the circle in an hour." Aisha stated as she peeped her head through the crack of the open door. "Okay, I'll be there in a minute." Y/n nodded before sighing when door closed and turning off phone before getting up and heading to the circle.
"Your emotions are a barrier. Nothing more, nothing less. They're a power source. You've been told to control them." Rosalind explained, glancing at y/n as she stared ahead at the ground. "That isn't always the best option. In combat, you'll need to rely on instinct." She moved and stood in front of y/n, tapping her foot on the students causing y/n to look up "That's when you find true power. Bloom, y/n. Fire on fire, who wins against Marco, an air fairy."
Y/n looked at Rosalind from the side of her eye only to see the new headmistresses eye brow raised in a way that told her not to attempt anything stupid. She looked ahead to see Marco standing in front of the two fire fairies, getting ready to use his magic. Y/n glanced at Bloom who nodded at her in encouragement before they summoned a ball of fire each, throwing it at Marco only for him to shoot electric balls at them, distinguishing the fire as the two groaned. Y/n flicked her wrist and went to make a fire again only for Marco to shoot another ball of electric at her, hitting her shoulder causing her to gasp and fall to the ground in pain, feeling it travel to the metal object embedded in her back. Bloom sees her friend in pain so takes control of the situation, throwing ball of fire at the older fairy, only for Marco to distinguish that ball too. Bloom screams in frustration and allows her magic to get the better of her, and screamed in frustration, fire flowing over her arms.
"Good work Bloom." Rosalind praised as y/n watched Bloom calm down with wide eyes. "You okay?" Marco asked, helping y/n up off the ground. "Fine." Y/n sighed, accepting his help before moving to go sit down only for Rosalind to walk over to her. "Remember I have control over you." Rosalind whispered into y/ns ear before turning to the class, "Class dismissed."
Y/n eyes Rosalind before sighing and grabbing her back, opting to go watch Sky training for a bit. On her way she glanced towards Rosalind, seeing Bloom and her talking quietly. She just sighed and headed towards the specialist area, knowing Sky would need her with Andreas.
-----------------------------
Y/n walked towards the training area to see Sky and Dane walking towards a platform where Andreas was watching a group of specialists training together. She groans and rolls her eyes in annoyance when he glanced her way, tilting his head to side in a cocky way. Seeing his father watching something in the distance, Sky turns to see y/n and smiles at her slightly before getting into place opposite side of Dane.
"The little prince and the upstart. This should be good. Blood first." Andreas spoke with authority. Y/n looked at him with wide eyes as Sky gave him a look. "Worried about staining your new outfit? Maybe home economics is more your speed? Is that what Saul thought. Did he wear an apron?" Andreas looked at y/n with a smirk as she looked down with sadness, taunting Sky. "Come on, let's just do it. We're not going to hurt each other." Dane spoke, wanting it to be finished.
Y/n watched as Sky got his sword ready, Dane following suit. The two stood for a minute before yelling and grunting, charging for each other. Her eyes widened as the two began to fight rough, glancing o the side as she hears footsteps walking towards her. Her eyes meet Rivens who nods at her before watching the two specialists fighting. Seeing Riven and y/n close, Andreas walks over to her, standing between them as they watch.
"Odds?" He asks Riven, y/n eyeing them from the side. "First glance, it's Sky's to lose. Danes got shit to prove. A lot of pressure." Riven spoke and y/n flinched as the swords clashed together. "Yeah Sky will, uh, give him space, let him think he's winning, then find his opportunity. I give it three, two.. nah, thing is this isn't a first glance fight. Sky won't draw blood. Dane on the other hand."
Y/n gasped as Dane nipped Sky with his sword after Sky managed to get him on the ground, drawing blood. Sky moved back in shock, stumbling onto one knee as y/n watched Dane walk off the platform before making her way over to Sky. She stands beside him as he gets up before allowing her to look at the gash on his side. He flinches as she hits against the open wound, and y/n apologized, moving her hand away. The two look at Andreas as he sees' the specialist and fairy together, opting to walk towards them.
"Perhaps we should have y/n have a go at fighting with swords." Andreas stated, stopping in front of the two. "Leave it." Sky stated through gritted teeth. "Why your father never taught you fighting is beyond me, I actually think you'd make a good specialist, better than a fairy anyway." Andreas taunted before leaving.
Sky and y/n walk over to Riven who was watching the interaction. "He's a prick." Sky stated, watching his biological father walk away. "Yeah, and he's your dad. This mean you'll give me a run for my money one day?" Riven asked, smiling slightly. "Come on, let's get you checked out." Y/n sighed before leading Sky to the greenhouse, Riven and Dane following.
--------------------------------------------
After bringing Sky to the greenhouse and seeing Terra and other earth fairies begin the mend the specialist, y/n opted to leave the school building and sit under a tree for awhile. Taking out a book, y/n leaned back against the bark of the oak tree, before starting to revise over today's lesson. However, due to voices behind her she struggled to concentrate.
Since Silva had been arrested for the attempted murder of Andreas, everyone had heard the news and it was now currently the hot topic of choice for student conversations. They particularly liked to talk about how y/n was likely to struggle with control without her father, which also wasn't too far off it sometimes, if it wasn't for the diamond embedded in her back. What it was she still didn't know, and she refused to tell any of her suite mates about it.
Leaning her head back and sighing, y/n opts to close her eyes and take deep breaths before frowning, feeling eyes on her. Moving her vision forward, she sees Rosalind walking into the greenhouse with Harvey talking to her, however the headmistress wasn't listening as she watched the young fairy in the distance. The headmistress narrows her eyes and y/n flinches forward in pain, feeling the diamond on her back burning. Realizing she wasn't getting anywhere anytime soon, y/n sighed and gathered her stuff, deciding to go back to the suite and try to get some rest, unknown of the news she would soon receive.
-----------------------------
Silva sat in the prison cell he had been placed in since his arrest, thinking about his daughter and wondering how she was. He knew how y/n was when things were hard, how vulnerable she became without him. The last time he had been gone for awhile was back during the hunting of the burned ones, and he never forgot the fear he had when she thought he she was going to lose him. And the look she gave him when he was arrested was one he would never forget, her screaming for him forever embedded in his mind, haunting him. Silva throws his head back in frustration but looks back up when the door was heard opening, Andreas walking in.
"How's it going soldier." Andreas said teasingly, moving closer to the cell his old friend sat. "Always the comedian Andreas." Silva stated jokingly, leaning back against the wall. "Yes well, just thought you would like to know how your precious daughter is getting on." Andreas stated, watching in amusement as Silva sat up straight at the mention of his only child. "Y/n, how is she, is she okay?" Silva asked, desperate to know how she was. "Oh she's fine, her fighting skills are coming along. Some specialist you could of had if you wanted." "Andreas don't do that to her, you said you'd watch over her for me. Just leave her be, she's enough going on already, she doesn't want to be that." Silva begged, not wanting his daughter to feel pressured into anything. "Oh I am watching her, we have her under control." Andreas stated before leaving Silva alone. "What's that meant to mean? What have you done to her, please just leave her be." Silva begged to know, only for his pleas to fall on deaf ears. "I'd hold onto the memories you have of your precious daughter Saul, I doubt you'll see her again." Andreas taunted the ex headmaster of Alfea before closing the door behind him.
Silva allowed tears fall silently as he realized his faith was all but sealed, when all he wanted was to see his daughter.

The next step is successfully passing all required USMLE exams. These are challenging, marathon tests covering a wide range of topics. Thorough preparation through dedicated study time and practice questions is a must.
The USMLE step structure is:

Step 2 CS - Evaluates clinical and communication skills through interactions with standardized patients.

3) Get Valuable Clinical Experience in the USA
In addition to tests, US residencies want applicants exposed to the American healthcare system and culture.
Gaining clinical experience in the US through observerships and clinical electives are a big advantage. These allow you hands-on learning of workflows, systems, treatments, technologies, patient populations, documentation, communication norms and more in American hospitals and clinics.
Observership organizations like Prasad Medical Center (+1 718-774-6060) assist IMGs in securing observership positions across the country. Be sure to research and understand program eligibility terms before applying.
Even a few weeks of US clinical experience can give that important edge among competitive applicants.
US clinical experience highlights adaptability to American medical norms.
4) Register with the AAMC
The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) has two key systems you must access during your application process:
MSPE (Medical Student Performance Evaluation) – Official record of medical education including grades, rankings and assessment.
ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service) – Centralized online application portal distributing all materials to selected residency programs.
Register with AAMC early to get your credentials verified, understand each platform and have ERAS documentation ready when application season starts.
Connecting with the AAMC is essential throughout the residency hunt.
5) Pick your Residency Programs
When deciding which residency programs to apply for, start broad. Identify specialties matching your interests, strengths and USMLE scores. Use online directories to make a list of reach, reasonable match and safety options across several states or regions.
Factors like location competitiveness, program size, IMG match history and curriculum emphasis can help you categorize options. Have a few safety choices with higher IMG acceptance rates.
Research programs thoroughly to have residency options at each level.
6) Get your ECFMG Token and Register with ERAS
Once programs are selected, activate your ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates) token. This allows ERAS to verify your test scores, credentials and identity when applying.
Next, access your MyERAS applicant profile. Add your exam history, experiences, publications and other credentials that programs will review.
Double and triple check all entries for accuracy before submitting to avoid costly mistakes or delays.
MyERAS is your central application hub throughout the residency process.
7) Finalize Documentation and Submit ERAS Application
With your MyERAS profile complete, finalize all required documentation:
Personal statement
Medical school transcripts
MSPE Dean’s letter
Letters of recommendation (3+)
School catalogues
Proofread all materials thoroughly before uploading to ERAS by the deadlines. Activate program selections and assign supporting documents for each.
Carefully prepare all pieces of your ERAS application package.
8) Medical Residency Interview
With a strong application submitted early, interview offers should follow!
Interview formats vary widely across residencies. Common options include one-on-one, panel interviews, multiple mini interviews (MMIs) and virtual interviews.
Careful preparation is key. Research programs, polish answers to common questions, hone your communication style, dress professionally and send prompt thank you notes.
Treat travel associated interviews as 24/7 assessments of fit. Be gracious, avoid complaining and share your passion for medicine and interest in the program.
Interviews are critical to sealing a residency position – make the most of them!
9) Register with the NRMP
After interviewing, register with the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) by late January. Creating your NRMP account starts the matching process based on how you rank programs and how they rank applicants.
The yearly Match Day in mid-March reveals results simultaneously to applicants across the country. This coordinated effort fills nearly 40,000 residency roles each spring.
Understand match statistics for given specialties and programs to set realistic expectations before this nerve-wracking day!
Learning match nuances helps ease the anticipation leading up to Match Day!
10) Residency Post-Match Focus
If matched, congratulations on achieving that coveted US residency program spot! Notify all relevant parties, celebrate thoroughly and handle any needed visa application processes.
Review program details to address required paperwork, licensing, preparations or moving requirements before start dates. Share excitements and ask graduated residents for advice as you transition to this intense but rewarding new chapter!
For those not matched, don’t be discouraged! Strategize about strengthening certain areas of your application and discuss options with mentors. Often success comes with perseverance and giving yourself the best opportunities the following year.
We hope this overview gives international medical graduates more clarity on the pathway to getting a US medical residency. While challenging, thousands achieve this goal annually through careful planning, dedication to preparation, and showing your passion for serving US patient populations.
If you still need assistance securing clinical experience or have any other questions along your journey, don’t hesitate to contact the knowledgeable team at Prasad Medical Center at (+1 718-774-6060) or visit https://www.prasadmedicalcenter.com/ We wish you the best of luck in achieving your American medical career dreams!

Internships, Work-Studies, OPT, and Job Hunting: Advice from a Peer Mentor
THE IMPORTANCE OF INTENTIONALITY
At the age of 16, Giulia Lins enrolled in a program called The Rotary Youth Exchange. This program allowed young, aspiring students to visit a new country for a period of time — but there was a catch. Students were placed randomly in one of three countries. Through a bit of luck, the U.S. chose Giulia, and she got to spend a year living in the state of Vermont.
So was it luck that landed Giulia in the U.S.? Maybe. Throughout her journey, Giulia has, time and time again, “stumbled” into fortunate circumstances, including her youth exchange program, peer mentorship opportunities, and even an OPT (Optional Practical Training) internship. Giulia actively seeks out new opportunities — it’s not so much a coincidence when you create your own luck. She says:
“My main advice is — be proactive about what you’re trying to do. Be intentional. Don’t just expect it to happen. Don’t just say, ‘I want to study in the United States,’ and then wait for help from your parents or somebody else — you need to be constantly active and proactive; you need to go after it because otherwise, it’s not going to happen.”
Giulia controls what she can control — when you do that, the world has a way of rewarding you for your hard work.
Here are other articles that can help you:
What is the Difference Between OPT and CPT?
Applying for an OPT
Optional Practical Training and Internships
The importance of experience
After her youth exchange stay in Vermont, during which she fell in love with American culture, Giulia knew that she wanted to study abroad in the U.S. after finishing high school. Rather than jump straight to a four-year college, Giulia decided to complete her general requirements through Lane Community College (LCC) in Eugene, Oregon. After a bit of exploration during her first term, Giulia changed her major to business and continued working toward her associate degree.
In her last term at Lane, through the college’s International Student Peer Mentor Program, she had the opportunity to start an OPT internship in the international office that eventually led to a year-long staff position as admission and staff-recruitment assistant. The OPT internship gave Giulia an opportunity to take a break before pursuing her bachelor’s degree to gain some real-world work experience (including some marketing work, which appealed to her because it combines aspects of business and creativity). The OPT provided a chance for Giulia to determine if this type of work was the right career path for her.
“OPT can bring everyone great benefits. It helped me understand who I am as a professional and as a person. It helped me understand my professional environment, my chosen market of business concentration. It helped me understand what my life would be like eventually. It helped me understand: how can I use the next two years of college to help me become a better professional? Because right now in the market, I know what they’re looking for. I’m in the market.”
Thanks to her OPT internship, Giulia gained the experience to embark on her next journey at the University of Oregon studying marketing. Best of luck, Giulia! Not that you’ll need it. :)
